Keyboard seems to trap modifier key after sleep

Hello there,
Wondering if anyone else has this issue. When my iMac sleeps, or even if enough time elapses for the monitor to shut off, oftentimes upon waking it with the mouse the system seems to be sending a modifier key.
I left-click the mouse to wake. The next thing I click on will either show a contextual menu (as if the control key is held down) or if the item is on the dock do a "Show in Finder" (as if the Command key is held down).
If I press the control key on the keyboard the system seems to sort itself out and the problem does not persist.
Find it odd though. Any others out there with this issue? Any suggestions?

Unfortunately didn't work When I paired it to another device (my iPhone in this case) it just messed about with the ringer volume, same as it does with the iMac volume. Maybe the volume key is stuck and whatever key does zooming in and out (though it's not doing any zooming on the phone). I guess it IS 5 years old now, could it just be well and truly buggered?

  • Modify login after sleep screen

I have 10.6.4 running on my MacBook Pro. I have the computer set to require a password when it wakes from sleep. I'd like to modify the graphic on the login screen (its a padlock image) to something else. Anyone know the name of the image file and where its located?

i would remove the com.apple.loginwindow.plist and the /library/preferences/systemconfiguration folder. just trash them. but you will have to reintroduce your network settings, as they are wiped out with removing that second file. hope that is helpful. [ 8 ) ]

  • Changing keyboard modifier keys

I use an editor (EMACS) which makes major use of the 'ctrl' key so I swap it with the 'caps lock' key so my little finger can hit it without getting a cramp. It works just fine about 90% of the time but the other 10%, when I hit the 'caps lock' key instead of getting the 'ctrl' function I get the 'caps lock' function and my editing screws up terribly. It is really frustrating because if I don't notice, and if I hit what I think is <ctrl>k to kill a line I get a 'K' in the text instead.

I solved this problem by finding and altering an applescript that will change the keyboard modifier keys. I wish I could still find the web page so I could post it, but here's the applescript I used to change to PC layout:
    tell application "System Preferences"
    activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.keyboard"
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "System Preferences"
click radio button "Keyboard" of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "Modifier Keys…" of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click pop up button 3 of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click menu item 4 of menu 1 of pop up button 3 of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
    delay 1
click pop up button 4 of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click menu item 3 of menu 1 of pop up button 4 of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "OK" of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
    end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Preferences"
    quit
    end tell
    (end of script)
And here's the script I used to change it back to Mac layout:
    tell application "System Preferences"
    activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.keyboard"
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "System Preferences"
click radio button "Keyboard" of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "Modifier Keys…" of tab group 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "Restore Defaults" of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
click button "OK" of sheet 1 of window "Keyboard & Mouse"
    end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Preferences"
    quit
    end tell
    (end of script)
I saved the scripts as executibles with neat Apple and XP custom icons and put them in the Dock. Pretty slick.

  • Changing modifier keys in keyboard preference pane has no effect

I use a standard "windows" usb external keyboard. In 10.5 you could remap the "Command" and "Option" keys to match the "Mac" layout. In 10.6 the preference pane is still available, but no matter how you change the pop-up menus the keyboard layout is not changed. See http://iamwa.de/45
I have verified this to be the case with three different USB keyboards.

@mtrichardson: THANK YOU!!! I've been having problems my modifier keys for months, and was using the section of the modifiers that affected ALL keyboards to swap the modifier keys. That section was apparently removed in snow leopard which left me high and dry until I saw your post. I tried unplugging the mouse and THEN configuring the USB keyboard, and that did the trick!

  • Changing modifier keys on only  external keyboad

There was a similar post that was labelled as solved, but in fact did not address the greater problem.
I have the same problem as the original poster in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=778597&tstart=0
but the solution posted won't work for me–my external IBM keyboard does not have any software of its own (for os x) to manually remap the keys.
Might there be a way to fiddle around with the Apple USB kernel extensions to solve the issue?
In any even I sincerely hope Apple adds this simple setting to its keyboard preferences in the new os, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Modifier Keys Not Restoring to Default

I changed my modifier key mapping so that I could use a Windows keyboard with my MacBook Pro (late 2008). I set the Control key to function as the Command key and vice versa. Now it won't change back.
I've changed the key selections. Restored Defaults under Keyboard & Mouse. I've performed a Disk Utility. I've confirmed nothing is selected under Speech.
At a loss and kind of miffed. Makes using my laptop quite inconvenient when not at my desk.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

OK, I've solved the problem. Here's how you fix it:
    1. Plug in the external keyboard and set the modifier keys to work correctly with the external keyboard.
    2. Change the modifier keys back to default settings. Try the laptop keyboard to insure the modifier keys work correctly.
    3. Go back to the modifier keys section and in the "Select keyboard:" drop down pick the external keyboard.
    4. Change the modifier keys to work with the external keyboard.
    5. Test both keyboards, they should now work.
You might not have to do all these steps, but that's what I did and it worked. Good luck.

  • Yosemite upgrade: function keys no longer work, no keyboard lights and have to sign in twice after sleep mode.  Anybody else having these problems?

    Hi,
Since I did the Yosemite 'upgrade' last week I have been having problems with my MacBook Pro that never happened before.  The most frustrating problems involve my keyboard which doesn't light up (checked my settings and they are correct) and the top row of function keys don't do anything so I can't adjust the volume, brightness, etc.  Then if my screen goes into sleep mode, when I wake it back up I have to sign back in twice - I never had to sign in at all after sleep mode before.
I'm finding that in order to get it working properly I am having to completely shut down and start up again but when the keyboard problems are happening I can't get anything on the apple dropdown to work either (i.e. shut down, restart, etc) so I can only shut down by pressing and holding the on/off button.
I've never had problems with my Macbook before and feel like Apple have completely ruined it in one update!  I've had a look through other posts on here but can't find anybody else having these problems so I would be really grateful if anyone could help me and offer me some advice on how to sort it out.
    Thanks!

  • TS4080 apple thunderbolt display image on display intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys. Rebooting by pressing the power button resolves issue.

My apple thunderbolt display (which I purchased 1.5 years ago; OS 10.7.5 Mac Mini) intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys, so am thinking it is a hardware problem with the display. Rebooting by pressing the power button turns the screen back on, but the same phenomenon has occurred several times. Could this be a software issue, or do I need to have my display repaired? Your feedback would be appreciated.

Hi ED, tough to tell, but it does sound like it's waking with the bonk, just not displaying.
    Long shot but...
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
        1.    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
        2.    Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

  • Mac mini loses mouse and keyboard after sleep.

    Hi Everyone:
I recently bought my Mom one of the new Mac mini (I'm a PowerBook user myself), and she's running into some puzzling problems which, while minor, are sufficiently annoying as to confuse poor old Mom.
The system egnrally runs fine after you turn it on, until it goes to sleep. After some undefined period in sleep mode, the Mac mini appears to "lose" the USB keyboard and mouse which is plugged into it. If you press a mouse button or a keyboard key a few minutes within the system going to sleep, the system will wake up and both will work. If you wait a longer period of time (say, 20 minutes or longer, although I haven't sat and timed it at all), pressing any key or mouse button does nothing, and you have to wake it from sleep by using the power button. Once awake, the keyboard and mouse do nothing. The only way to get them back is to unplug both of them (the mouse is chained through the keyboard as the other Mac mini USB slot is used by Mom's UPS), and plug them back in so the Mac mini can re-detect them on the bus, after which everything is happy again until the system has been asleep for too long.
Has anyone experienced this? Both the mouse and keyboard are genuine IBM (as in: made by International Business Machines), although are several years old (I bought them when I worked for IBM, and IIRC they were amongst the first models of USB keyboards and mice that IBM offered, if not the first).
In the interm, I've lent Mom my Apple Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, which has (as you would expect) worked flawlessly. This problem may "solve" itself -- I'm hoping to take Mom out later this week to buy her own Apple Bluetooth mouse and keyboard at the Apple Store.
The other problem, however, isn't as easy (or necessarily as cheap) to fix. Again after the system has been asleep for some time, it often (but not always) changing the resolution of the monitor when it wakes up. I have the mini set to use a reasonable 1024*768, but sometimes when it awakes it will suddenly be set to 800*600 or 832*624. Sure, you can change it back, but that's major surgury for Mom (and I'm moving cross-country next week, and won't be able to just "drop by" to fix system problems). The monitor is an Ambra SVGA model (Ambra was a brand-name of inexpensive PCs that IBM sold some years ago), and never had any such problems on her last (Intel-based) system the mini is replacing.
The whole purpose of the Mac mini is to "bring your own" Keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor -- but in our case the keyboard and mouse don't work at all after sleep, and the monitors resolution gets dynamically changed after sleep. Has anyone else encountered this situations, or any solutions? TIA!
    Brad BARCLAY

    Hey Jan:
I've seen quite a few posts in this regard with non-Apple mice and keyboard.
Well, the mouse and keyboard are quite old -- it could be that they're having a problem dealing with identifying themselves on the USB bus during sleep, or aren't identifying themselves fast enough at wake time. I'll just have to replace them I guess.
I've never seen a sleep resolution switching problem except on a VGA adapter to DVI connection to an old tube monitor.
Well, this is a pretty vanilla CRT monitor circa about 1999, so yeah -- it could once again be an age issue, and the fact that there is a DVI -> VGA adapter involved in the middle.
For worrying about fixing Mom's Mac, setup her remote VNC software (Apple Remote Desktop Client) and use the free Chicken of the VNC admin program.
I am quite familiar with VNC. As much admin as possible will be done by SSH, but I will have VNC in place before I leave. The big problem is going to be the fact that I'm going to be several timezones (and over 4000 km) away, so I won't necessarily be available at a moments notice to help her with this sort of thing.
The CRT issue we might just have to deal with by having her always run it at 800*600 (I don't think she'd really notice the difference, and as her eyes aren't what they once used to be, the slight size increase may be more confortable for her in the long run) until such time they she can afford to buy a nicer display (I did my duty as a son buying her the Mac mini and an iSight camera -- she has to take care of the rest ).
    Yaz.

  • Unable to change modifier keys on exernal keyboard.

Running a unibody MBP with 10.8.5.  Trying to change the modifier keys (swap Option and Command) on an external USB keyboard (daskeyboard ultimate stealth).  Using Preferences -> Keyboard/Mouse -> Modifier Keys, I select my external keyboard (listed as daskeyboard) and make the switch.  This has no effect.  I am able to change the modifiers on the built in keyboard, but that doesn't help me.
I am not running the KB through a hub, direct connect to USB port.
I have tried all possible combinations of adjust settings, reboot, retry, unplug, re-plug, move plug - no joy.
From other posts here and elsewhere it seems this bug/glitch has been in Apple's side for a lot of years.  Does anyone have a FIX for this that does not involve some hacky workaround where a chicken needs to die?
I run a linux VM on this Mac and it would be really nice if CTRL and ALT were where CTRL and ALT have been for decades.

    Hello
I have a new Toshiba Satellite A75-S209 laptop. Now the keyboard was working perfectly, until i plugged in a external logitech usb keyboard. Now when i try to use the laptop keyboard alone all the characters are messed up.
i have tried to reinstall the keyboard by removing it, but i was not successful .
is there any way of re mapping all the keys?
    or even like keyboard software?!
    thanks

  • Feature Suggestion for Keyboard System Preferences - Modifier Keys

I recently picked up an iMac and it came with the new low-profile aluminum small keyboard -- without the keypad.
I really like the small keyboard except for one thing -- the placement of the fn and control keys. The larger keyboard has three modifier keys on the left side: Control, Option, Command. The small keyboard has four: fn, Control, Option, Command.
It is annoying to switch between keyboards where the control key is in a different spot on each one. Retraining my finger on a per-keyboard basis is hard.
Apple thoughtfully provided in System Preferences a Keyboard control panel and it thoughtfully provided a "Modifier Keys..." popup to allow you to reassign the modifer keys. A great feature.
The problem is: you can't use this to modify the behavior of the 'fn' key. It is apparently hardcoded.
If I could use the modifier keys dialog to change the 'fn' into a 'Control', then I could use this keyboard without swearing everytime I miss the control key.
Another feature that would be great would be if I could also have different bindings for the modifers on the left side versus the modifiers on the right. That would allow me to reassign one of the right side modifier keys (that I never use) to be an 'fn' key.

I'm in the exact same boat as you...that Fn key is driving me nuts. I tried DoubleCommand and some other things as well, but the only thing that's coming close to what I want is a free download called "KeyRemap4MacBook."
Just go under the "Remap Fn Key" section and you can basically have it act as the Command key. (I actually always had my Command and Control keys swapped, so now both the Fn and Control keys now essentially act as the Command key.)
There are a few quirks I haven't figured out -- I can't seem to do Forward Delete -- but again, it's the only thing I've found so far that works.

  • Keyboard modifier keys

I have a new MacbookPro that I sometimes use with a bluetooth keyboard (Logitech DiNovo Edge). Because the bluetooth keyboard is set for Windows, I used the keyboard Preference Pane to switch the modifier keys for option and command (or Apple) keys. (That is, on the bluetooth keyboard I made the Option key work as the Command key and vice versa.)
My problem is that now I cannot switch the preference setting back. When I use the MBP without the bluetooth keyboard, I want the keys to work as designed. So I go to the Preference Pane and manually change the modifier keys settings, or click "Restore Default" but it continues to still be stuck at the setting that I had set for the bluetooth keyboard.
I have tried restarting the computer after restoring default. I have also removed the keyboard preferences (plist file) from the ~/Library folder. None of this makes a difference. I cannot restore the default key behavior.
Since I use the Command key a lot (to cut, paste, copy etc.) this is seriously affecting my work productivity. I will appreciate any help.

VK, That terminal command did not work for me.
However, I found the solution on another post and it worked. The solution is here:

  • Customized keyboard layouts - modifier keys

    Hi,
I have a question relating to the modifier keys in a customized keyboard layouts.
One can modify existing layouts or create new ones in the form of a .keylayout XML file in /Library/keyboard Layouts or ~/Library/keyboard Layouts.
According to "Technical Note TN2056" of Apple's online reference, http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2002/tn2056.html, it is possible to discriminate between the "left" and "right" versions of the modifier keys (e.g. option - "left Option" and rightOption - "right Option"). However, on my mbp 13" all modifier keys seem to be recognized as their "left" versions by the system.
Is this a known problem? Does anybody know a way to obtain a keyboard layout which can discriminate between left/ and right-modifiers?
    Jan

This is from the document you cited.
Note that many hardware keyboards do not have both left and right versions of a modifier key. It is usually safest to specify modifers in terms of the "any" variants (anyShift, anyOption, anyControl).

  • Modifier key's keyboard won't save

When I select my keyboard it reverts back to 'Apple Internal Keyboard' the second I close the window. Screen for clarity http://screencast.com/t/iTqbMg3m
The goal is to get the cntrl key to replace the windows key, and this seems to be the correct way to go about it...
I hope this is something easy! Thank you.

I don't think that dialog indicates which keyboard you are using. It lets you select the keyboard, and then set the modifier keys for that selected keyboard.
Are the adjustments not sticking for the keyboard you choose?
You might try resetting the attached keyboard type: http://www.raneri.it/blog/eng/2009/01/17/how-to-reset-the-mac-keyboard/
