Keyboard Shorcut - Swap Sound Output

I swap from "Line Out" to "Headphones" all day long, and every time I do so I have to go to System Preferences>Audio and change the setting. Does anyone know how I can do this from the keyboard?
Thanks!

there are no keyboard shortcuts for this and you can't make one. but I highly recommend Soundsource for this task.

it lets you do it from the menu bar and has headphone autodetection.

  • Sound output channel keeps switching by itself every few seconds

Hey guys, I have this sound output issue with my Macbook pro 2010 September version that every once in a while, the audio output would keep swapping between headphone, digital output and the speakers when NO headphone or digital output or what so ever is actually plugged in. During this time i am unable to adjust sounds, and my menu bar would become very slow to respond (the sound icon and Soundsource application would stop responding during this time). After a while (could be less than 10 minutes or last to about an hour, it varies), it returns back to normal by itself.
I've read many posts on Apple forum about this issue, but i haven't found a suitable solution. Also, I read that for most, when the audio output doesn't work it would usually be a output socket issue that there is a RED light in the socket. But for me, at times it has a RED light, at times, it doesn't, and sometimes the RED light would switch on and off by itself for a couple of times, depending on how long this issue lasts until it returns to its normal state by itself.
    I have tried:
    1. plugging the headphone into the socket and take it out quickly
    2. Downloading Soundsource: i heard that Soundsource has an option of manually adjusting the sound output channel instead of letting the computer switch automatically, but unfortunately I downloaded the latest (2.5) version of the software and it doesn't have that option on my macbook pro.
    3. I also tried Cmd + Opt + P + R
The result however is that none of this worked.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have both and haven't experienced this at all. Very strange. I do get a lot of random channel changes however when I put my iPad on the remote, the cat walks over it or the dog sits on it.
That being said, I don't use the Samsung remote at all for the TV and never have done. I dislike it and find it unresponsive. I use a different remote to change through the available outputs and the Vision remote for Vision and for switching the TV on and off.

  • Sound output device

    Hello,
Recently I have been experiencing problems with my sound in my iMac with OS X 10.6.2
In my sound output device list, I have the following:
    - Headphones (Should be selected)
    - Soundflower (2ch)
    - Soundflower (12ch)
To hear sound from my iMac speaker or headphone, the Headphone option should be selected. However, everytime I reboot the OS, it go to the soundflower and I have to manually go to system preferences and select the Headphones. I don't even know what the Soundflower is and why it is there. How do I make the "Headphones" as the default selection?
This has been an issue for the past month or so.

Soundflower is an audio routing program that emulates an output. It comes in very handy for people like me who use studio monitors through an audio interface as Apple doesn't allow you to adjust the volume on such setups with a keyboard (no idea why, since it works PERFECTLY under Windows 7 on Bootcamp, but I digress). I'm not sure how you installed it by accident, but you can delete it if you don't need it.
To fix your issue you need to delete the audio preferences file (I forget where it is, hopefully someone can help me out), then select the headphone output again and it should remember your setting.

  • Sound output stuck on Airplay on OLD Macbook Pro

This should not even be possible, since AirPlay is not even available on my late-2008 Macbook Pro...but my system preferences show that sound is being routed to my AppleTV via AirPlay!!
I have zero sound coming from my Macbook.  None with speakers attached, and none with nothing attached at all.  I go into System Preferences>Sound>Output, and AppleTV is somehow, impossibly, selected.  I can not unselect it.
I have rebooted my laptop, and rebooted AppleTV, and nothing works.
    Help!

Have you tried SMC or PRAM reset?
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Keyboard Shortcut for Sound System Preferences

    Hi everyone -
One of my favorite keyboard shortcuts on the Mac is "option + volume up" (or volume down) keys. This automatically opens system preferences and takes you to the sound preferences. I must use this at least a dozen times a day.
I recently got a new (non Apple) keyboard, and while it does have option and volume keys, the above shortcut does not work. Does anyone know what key commands the computer receives to cause the sound preferences to open?
I like to maybe use one of the softkeys on the keyboard to recreate this shortcut. Thanks! I've called Logitech and opened a case with a product specialist at Apple, but I figured I'd try here too.
    Thanks!

never knew about this shortcut. pretty useful. I also have to access this pane very often to switch between sound output devices. this got very annoying and I found this freeware
    [Sound Source|http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies>
try it out. it's even quicker than using your shortcut.

  • Upgrade to 10.9.4 Sound Output Gone

I upgraded to 10.9.4 today.  After doing so the internal speakers output option is not available in the Sound control panel.  My only selections are the Soundflower output choices from my previous install of Soundflower.
Can anyone advise how I could restore normal sound output to the speakers?  Thanks

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    3. If you've installed a software equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and restart.
    4. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    5. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    6. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    7. Reset the NVRAM.
    8. Reset the SMC.
    9. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    10. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • MuVo V100 suddenly distorts sound output, hates vocalists

9MuVo V00 suddenly distorts sound output, hates vocalists Greetings. I have a MuVo V00, which until quite recently has worked according to specifications as desired. After a period of nonuse, upon reinstatement it showed a global distortion in sound output, resulting in--impressi'vely--vocal frequency-range portions of files to be suppressed. Never mind that some music was improved in this way--it is an error that needs rectification, and unfortunately MuVo V00 models are past the End of Service Life.
I have downloaded the firmware patcher, and reapplied the latest firmware (which I had already had on the device, but consensus in various problem threads here leads one to believe that refreshing the firmware is a borderline panacea). No good. Swapped batteries on a hunch, no good. Swapped headphones, no good. Checked the files that are actually on the disk, they sound like they ought when played through the computer's means. I'm low on ideas, and the last person who asked this question here did not receive a reply. Anything spring to mind?

  • Troubleshoot Sound output for Macbook Pro 2009

macbook pro 2009 Sound output choice does not drop down anything but "internal speakers" choice. HDMI cable streams video and no sound. Have swapped out HDMI and it recognizes no sound for either. I think it could be a faulty adaptor for HDMI cable connection? It used to work fine then it stopped working and gave me a planet screen on TV when video was playing fine on computer. I tried again after software updates and a new hard drive and now it streams the video but sound only comes out of internal speakers. Wondering if I could be missing something on my mac before I buy another adaptor.

Another option, if you need a multi-channel sound support is to use a Optical cable like -

From MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) - Technical Specifications (all the other Macs from 2009 also support optical digital audio).
    Audio
    Built-in stereo speakers
    Built-in omnidirectional microphone
Combined optical digital output/headphone out (user-selectable analog audio line in)
Supports Apple Stereo Headset with microphone

  • Mac Mini Singel Core Sound Output problem

Mac Mini is connected to a amplifier, the sound-output is put on 100% this works perfect, but after shutdown the soound-output is set to 50% is it possible to set this always on 100 % ?
    thanks

Is the mini connected via the standard analog 1/8" audio jack or via a digital cable?
You could try resetting PRAM from this Apple doco:
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

  • USB (Mega stick), sound output and PS2 problems

    ==USB problem==
The MSI MEGA STICK do not work with the MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR.
When you plug it, its recognized, you can write on the MEGA STICK, delete files but cannot READ from MEGA STICK. It freezes while display "reading". I have tried on lots of PCs. Only my MSI motherboard do not work properly. The same problem with my 2 MEGA STICK. And i had tried Windows XP and Linux. Same problem. Others USB devices works fine. Even card readers...
    ==PS2==
My optical wireless mouse do not works properly. When i turns on the computer, it works ok. If i restart, do not work. Restart again, works. And go on... Only this mouse. Others MB works fine.
    ==Sound Output==
And also with my sound output. The eletrical one (coaxial).
It do not work with my 5.1 home system. It works fine with my old SB Live. It gets worse when i use my tv output from my Radeon 9100. It only works SOMETIMES when the tv output is not plugged in.
Thanks to all that could help me.

    Mega stick.
have you updated the firmware ?
No. It Freezes before being able to update. Also the update do not tell about solving this problem
    "Firmware version: 2.05
    Update items
    1. Improve delete MP3 and voice files function.
    2. Fix device will restart while forward/backward Voice file."
you do know that windows xp does not come with usb2 drivers.
sp1 does and you have to install them yourself.
go to device manager and delete all usb entries and reboot and windows will install the usb2 drivers next time you boot.
if you get a slipstreamed version of xp you dont need to do this as it installed usb2 drivers rightaway.
slipstream means a xp disc with sp1 on it.
My XP cd is already SP1. Also tried on BIOS to use only USB 1.1V
    PS2.
tried to use the other ps2 contact ?
No. Could i use the keyboard PS2 to plug the mouse?
    SOUND.
this is not my area but it could be a good idea to post what the equipment is.
have you tried the latest drivers from http://www.nvidia.com ?[/quote]
Its a brazilian brend. You wont know. CCE. Its works fine with DVDs, my old SB Live! and others. Only with my K7N2 do not work properly. Its an AC3 decoder. The problem gets worse when i use the Radeon 9100 tv out.

  • Automator - Toggle Sound Output Device

    Hi.
I have an audio interface with headphone output, and the internal imac speakers. I like to toggle between them very often Right now I have to open system prefs, click on sound, and select the sound output. This is a pain. Ideally, I would like a keyboard shortcut t do this for me, but I can't find a way to do it. I had a play with automator and thought I'd solved it by getting it to record me changing sound output - but it didn't work.
Can anyone give me some relatively simple instructions on how to make this task feasible?

    edit: (i know it's a 3 year old thread)
not sure why you would say that automator can't do it. if you can do it with a gui, there is almost certainly a way to do it using automator.  this is what i use for os x to switch to bluetooth (using ifttt to trigger a certain playlist when i'm almost home).
tell application "System Preferences" to set current pane to pane id "com.apple.preference.sound"
    tell application "System Events"
        tell process "System Preferences"
            tell window "Sound"
click (radio button 2 of tab group 1)
                delay 0.0
select row 2 of first table of first scroll area of first tab group
                delay 0.0
            end tell
        end tell
    end tell
tell application "System Preferences" to quit

  • I cannot change sound output to line out

I have a first gen 8-core Mac Pro 3GHZ. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, the machine wont let me change the sound output so that the sound comes out my external speakers. Have tried binning all sound prefs files, re-booting, PRAM and rebuild permissions. I know the speakers work and have tried using sound preferences panel, and Audo/Midi panel
    Help!
    Thanks in advance

Same here. Every time I reboot the sound defaults back to internal speakers. But it gets worse from there.
If it goes to the screen saver and log back in the sound is still set to line out but the output volume no longer works. By that I mean I can press the up and down volume on the keyboard and the volume control picture appears on the screen. However, the output volume under preferences>sound>output does nothing and the sound remains at the same volume. If I take the keyboard down to mute it will mute the system and cause the check box to activate. In order to fix the problem I have to click on internal speakers and back again to line out. At that point my volume controls work again.
Yippie Snow Leopard. Between that and taking away Quicktime's ability to make movies with picture files I wish I had waited on the upgrade.

  • External Keyboard-Separation of Sound

I have an external keyboard/synth that works well with MS. My one concern is that I am unable to isolate the sound from the keyboard and the patches in MS. I have a fader that mixes the sourced of Keys and MS. But it does not do a complete fade out, of the keybord while picking up the signal from MS. I can deal with it, but would rather have the option of having keyboard and MS isolated as well as mixed.
    Thanks

Why can't you just have one track for your external keyboard that sends its output to one bus? Then have your other mainstage tracks on a separate bus. You could control the levels of both things by adjusting their respective busses and either send them to the same output from there or to separate outputs.

  • IMac sound output changes

As I'm trying to watch tv shows I've bought from iTunes the sounds keep turning on and off.
I opened the sound preferences and found the output was switched to digital out- I cant even remember the last time I put headphones in!
Then, as I put my show on, right before my eyes the sound output changed from digital out to internal speakers (at which point I could hear my show once again) before it just as quickly changed to digital out without me doing anything at all!
    How can I stop this?

I don't think there is a real fix to the problem, there was a thread about this a while back and no one came up with anything, but to just get it to go back to built-in output, try plugging an 1/8th inch cable into the audio out jack, then either a) jiggle the plug in the jack (seems to have worked for other people) or b) adjust the computer volume (worked for me - I used the keyboard buttons rather than the sound preferences to do it, not sure if it makes a difference), then unplug it, and your sound output SHOULD change back to your internal speakers. Hopefully. Try both methods a couple of times if it doesn't.

  • Sound output unresponsive

For the last few day, whenever I press the keys on the keyboard that change the output volume of my computer, they will show the same box on the screen that they always have, however they do not change the volume, any suggestions?

    1. If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone into and out of the port
to flip the microswitch inside. Sound may be stuck in the digital mode.
    2. System Preference > Sound > Output
Make sure that Mute is not selected.
    3. Reset PRAM.   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
Hope anyone of these steps help.
