Keyboard shortcut to rename files in Finder

Hi,
How can I create a keyboard shortcut to rename files in Finder, preferrably "F2"?
I know I can click on the filename twice in Finder with a short delay and then I can rename it - but that's a drag if you have to rename a lot of files....
I'm also aware of the possibility to create shortcuts in
System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts
...just can't figure out how to create the shortcut I need
Thanks,
Koinseb

Select a file and press return to edit the name without the delay.
You might look at A Better Finder Rename if you have many files to rename:

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to delete files without the need to use the mouse? In OS X Mavericks.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to delete files without the need to use the mouse in OS X Mavericks?

    my question is precise
    Not exactly........
Cmd-Delete deletes a selected file without a mouse.
What you want, I think, is a way to select the file (presumably in Finder) without a mouse so that it can be deleted.
If you open a new Finder window - Cmd-N you can navigate with the up/down arrow keys as you navigate a file is selected , once selected it can be deleted with cmd-delete.
If while navigateing with the up/dpwn arrow keys you encounter a folder you can delete the folder with cmd-delete or open the folder with the right arrow and proceed to naviagte and delete.

  • Assigning keyboard shortcuts to imported files?

Is there a way to assign keyboard shortcuts to audio files imported into the Waveform editor? (the files that appear in the "Files" frame)
Because I notice this is possible with, say, workspaces, and was hoping I could assign certain shortcuts to imported file 1, imported file 2, imported file 3 etc.

There is no way to do this currently -- no one knows if it it will be in the next release, but judging from comments here is it a much-requested feature.

  • Renaming files in finder - keyboard freezes

I have been renaming some picture files in Finder, and lately when I have been renaming them it will do a few fine, but then when I go to rename the next file I suddenly am not able enter any text in Finder and can rename no more files. It will open the files fine, but I cannot rename them. This may be related to renaming them with a ".tif" from a ".jpg"--I am not sure. I know that Num Lock is not on, and I can type in other applications such as word processing so the keyboard is not locked up in other places--just in Finder.
How can I solve this without restarting the computer?

I cannot offer a solution to this problem, although I can add the details of a similar situation that seems to happen to me: when I am creating new folders in Finder, after I create and name the first one, Finder no longer responds to keystrokes. Restarting Finder seems to help, but is an ugly solution to the symptom. What is the cause of this unresponsiveness?

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to move from a Finder search bar to results?

Is there a keyboard shortcut to move from a search bar in the top right of a Finder window, to the results below?

In OS X 10.5.8's Finder, if I hit the "tab" key while the window's search bar is selected, it just cycles through the toolbar (back button, forward button, etc.).
In 10.6.2's Finder, if I hit the "tab" key while the window's search bar is selected, it will eventually get to highlighting the files in the results list. But this only happens if I search from the universal Spotlight menu bar, and then "Show All" to launch those results in Finder.
If I open a new Finder window, and then search from that window's search bar, the "tab" key will only get me as far as Search "This Mac" in the search filtering bar.
I can confirm that i see exact same behavior as you in all these situations. I was going to suggest tabbing too but decided to check if it actually works first and ran into the same issues. I don't believe there is any other method to do what you want as this one does not work.

  • Monitor Dead - Keyboard shortcuts to Share Files

    Hello,
I'm a new member to the forums, but I have had my Ibook for almost 4 years now. 3 days ago the screen began flickering and finally is completely dead. I tried using an external monitor but that doesn't work either. I have a small network at home and I'd like to get my files off of the Ibook before taking it in for repairs but I didn't have the "Window Sharing" option turned on in System Prefferences. Does anyone know if there are keyboard shortcuts I could enter (since I can't see the screen) to get to system prefferences, select "sharing" and turn on the Windows file sharing or the remote login options?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Aside:
I knew for a while that older Ibooks had these problems but mine performed well for the longest time. I guess it's just it's time to die, although 4 years seems awefully short to me. I only took it on trips, outside of the office very infrequently. (My old compaq laptop from 1996 still works well!)

If you have access to another Mac with FireWire, you may be able to get the iBook to remain responsive in FireWire Target Disk Mode long enough to retrieve your data by this method:
If the iBook is on, shut it down and wait 30 seconds (or longer). Pick it up in your left palm to the left of the trackpad and squeeze the case there between your palm and left thumb as you push the power button and key combination to start up in FireWire Target Disk Mode. Do not let up the pressure on the case. Continue applying this pressure as you save your data to the other Mac. If you let up and the iBook dies or freezes, you will have to start over, allowing it to rest several hours or overnight before beginning again.
It took me three days of starts and stops to get my backup before sending my iBook in for its first logic board replacement.
    Good luck!
(Did you ever think that maybe the Compaq still works because you haven't used it as much as the iBook? I know I don't use a Windows computer as often as a Mac. I have my son's hand-me-down Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, and I've only turned it on about twice in nearly a year. In my opinion, NO Windows laptop "works well," no matter how "good" it is.)

  • Keyboard shortcut for exporting files is inop.

Using 5.5 and a programmable mouse.  All of a sudden I'm getting a tiny sound when I hit the mouse button to export out of the export window...that's it.  Tried the keyboard shortcut and same problem.  Shut down and restarted..all of that...went thru the settings for the mouse and they are OK...sheesh...

...to clarify: the file will not export unless I hit the "export" button in the export window.  Only the "tink" sound happens if I try to use my dedicated mouse button OR the proper keyboard shortcut.

  • Shortcut for renaming files?

    Hey all,
I wasn't sure where to post this but since I am a newbie ....
I made the move about a year ago to Linux with Ubuntu and then about 2 months ago to Arch Linux. The only one thing that I miss about Windows is the ability to rename files by simply highlighting them and clicking on them once more (as opposed to right clicking on the file and going through the menu to find the rename command). Is there a way to modify Gnome to be able to do this?
    Thanks!

    Aah !! My bad !
should have read it more carefully. Yup, in that case, F2 is the way to go.

  • Renaming Files In Finder Makes Cover Flow Move!

    Hi,
In Finder in Tiger, you used to be able to rename a file by selecting it, pushing return, then using the left and right cursor keys on the keyboard to move left and right through the file name. However, in Leopard this doesn't work. Instead of moving the text entry point through the file name, the cursor keys make cover flow move from left to right. So, my question is, how are you supposed to edit your file names?

This works fine for me. Open Finder window. Switch to Coverflow view. Click on a filename at the bottom. Press Return (filename is selected). Press left and right arrow keys ... cursor moves through filename allowing editing.
Not sure what your issue could be. Keyboard issue? Do the arrow keys work correcly in other windows/applications?

  • A crash of Acrobat X Professional when saving a renamed file in Finder?

Crashes every time.  Create a file.  Change the name in finder.  Make a change to that file and try to save.  Says you can't.  That's ok.  Close the file.  It will ask you to save.  Click Don't Save.  Acrobat falls over every time!  Not cool.  This was never a problem with Acrobat 9 Prof is now.  Actually it was one of the great reasons to use my Mac version rather than my Windows version.  This bug needs to be fixed or it is back to Acrobat 9 Prof for me.  OS 10.6.6

This is a self-answering question.  I took Cocktail and cleared the Adobe caches from Pilot.  Seems to be working so far.  Fingers crossed.  But if it happened to you, then this could be one solution.

  • How can I find and disable Page Down in the Keyboard Shortcuts menu?

I often accidentally hit Page Down because it's right beside my arrow keys. It seems to switch to the next symbol in the library which is something I never under any circumstances would want to do. How do I disable this incredibly annoying keyboard shortcut? I can't find it anywhere in the unsearchable rat's nest that is the Keyboard Shortcut menu.

Aha, thank you for drawing my attention to the export html button, it does make it possible to search those keyboard shortcuts.
In my case, View -> Go to -> Next was set to nothing. More oddly, the words "Page Down" don't appear anywhere at all in the generated file, and when I set another random command (Zoom In) to use Page Down it didn't warn of a conflict. Hitting page down zoomed in instead of switching me to another symbol, and when I cleared the shortcut from zoom in it went back to swapping between symbols. I guess I'll have to set something benign to use the page down key.
Bizarre. I guess this must be a bug in CS6?

  • FIND BIN KEYBOARD SHORTCUT FOR SEQUENCES

    Hi,
Is there a keyboard shortcut that allows you to find the bin in which your sequence lives? (There is one in Avid, is there not a comparable on for FCP?)
    Thanks!

I´m afraid there is no keyboard shortcut for that.
    Avid has it, FCP not...
But don´t say it too load, or this thread will be censored and erased, as it´s happened in the past when talking about comparisions between Avid and FCP.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts - Bridge CS3

    Hello,
I am trying to figure out what my keyboard shortcuts are for Bridge CS3 on a Windows machine.  That is the set up I am working on currently for a contract job.
Primarily, I am trying to find a quick way to navigate and modify multiple file names (I basically need to remove the first 3 to 5 characeters of the filename) with out having to right-click and choose rename on all of them. I found the keyboard shortcut for Rename to be space bar, however, that doesn't seem to do anything for me.  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or need to enable a preference, etc.  I run Bridge CS4 on my own Mac machines so I'm not familiar with the variations on the Windows version.
    Any info would be great!!
    Thanks!
    Stef

This is not something I am familar with, but guess no one else is either.
On your Mac do you have a shortcut to do what you want?  If so then a Win machine can do the same thing I would suspect.
If you are looking for some auto process to scrub the first characters then you may have to employ a script.  Here again I know nothing of scripts.  But visit the Bridge Script froum and they can probably fix you right up.

  • "Tab" as Keyboard Shortcut.

I would like to assign "tab" as a keyboard shortcut in Flash CC, when I try to do it in the "Keyboard Shortcut Window" it tabs me out of that frame so I am unable to assign it. Please Help.
I looked at the Keyboard Shortcut XML file in my preferences but I couldn't make sense of it.
In Flash CS 6 you can just push tab during the "press keyboard shortcut" part of setting it up, painless.

I have determined that "Tab" is key #9.
However, in the Keyboard Shortcut file for Flash CC it does not seem to use this system but more so "spells out" the keys. I am trying to run a script command that is visible in the "Keyboard Shortcut" window but unable to find it in the keyboard shortcut file even if I set it to another key and look for it.

  • Need keyboard shortcuts for an old Power Macintosh please

    Hi all
I’m try to copy 2 folders from the desktop of an old Apple Power Macintosh to a ZIP drive.
The mouse on the Power Mac doesn't work, so I’ve to use keyboard shortcuts to move the folders.
My problem is that I can’t find the right keyboard map on the web for a computer about 15 years old, and the OSX keyboard shortcuts don’t work on this computer.
As far as I can work out the Power mac is before G3 and is a 6000 to 8000 model. If anyone knows the shortcut to find the exact software version, that will be great.
So could anybody please suggest to me the keyboard shortcuts for the following commands:
    Open ZIP dive folder
    Move back to desktop
    Copy folder on the desktop
    Select ZIP drive folder
Past the folder from desktop to ZIP drive.
I can’t find any info on the web, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Under Mac OS 8 or later, you can select a file or folder in the current window (or on the desktop if no windows are open) by typing the first few letters of its name. You can also use the arrow keys. I don't remember whether these work in System 7.
Apple-O opens a selected file or folder. Apple-W closes the current window.
Apple-C and Apple-V are copy and paste, respectively, but I'm not sure if they'll work for copying files and folders. I'm not sure if there's a keyboard shortcut for moving files and folders.
If you can find "Script Editor" (it might be in a folder named "Applescript"), you could use it to write a script that will move the folders. Follow these instructions:
Find and open Script Editor. Apple-F opens the "Find" window.
In Script Editor, enter the following:
(Instead of XYZ and ABC, enter the names of the folders you want to copy. And instead of MyZIP, enter the name of the Zip disk.)
    tell application "Finder"
duplicate folder "XYZ" of desktop to disk "MyZIP"
duplicate folder "ABC" of desktop to disk "MyZIP"
    end tell
Press Apple-R. That should copy the folders to the Zip disk.
