Keyboard shortcut to reply to Message in alert

I'd like to be able to choose "reply" on a Message alert without using the mouse. I can type and send a message using only the keyboard, which is nice, but I'd like to be able to do the whole thing from the keyboard. I know I can tab through applications to go to Messages, but I like using the alert itself to keep as much of the rest of my screen as visible as possible.
Is there a preference or anything for this that I could use?
Thanks for any tips!

I know that "option tab" will move between the tables but I cant edit any cells from there. Its not that my tables are far apart or even that big, its more the movement between keyboard and mouse that I'm trying to circumvent.

I can't stand that Mail always goes to the next newest message after deleting.
Every other email program I've ever seen (including Entourage - see below) can do this.  Why can't Apple?  I don't want to touch the mouse most of the time because it really slows down work to move ones hands back and forth.   I did a quick web search and found these shortcuts for all the major programs.  If you know of any other program besides Apple Mail that doesn't have this, let me know.
Until then, if Outlook, Outlook Express, Entourage, Sparrow, Postbox, and Thunderbird have had this, what's Apple's problem adding it?

  • Keyboard shortcut for opening mail messages

i'd like to be able to open email messages using a keyboard shortcut. i suspect i'm being thick, but I can't seem to find a way to do that. (i tried the keyboard shortcut function in system preferences, but because there is no "open" menu command, I couldn't create a shortcut.) Much obliged for any help.

I too would be interested in a keyboard shortcut to open new email messages. Do any of you Mail pros have an idea to help us out with this?
    Thanks!

  • Disable Reply All button via Group Policy without disabling keyboard shortcut

At my organization, we've used Group Policy to disable the Reply to All button in Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010. When you use the setting in the ADM files for the respective versions of Office to disable a Command bar ID, the Reply to All button is disabled,
however they keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Shift + R) is still active. This forces our users to think a bit more before using the Reply All function.
The keyboard shortcut continues to work, because there's a separate setting to disable the keyboard shortcuts. The same is true for Office 2013's GP templates, however, it does not function as expected.
When I use the Office 2013 admin templates and disable command bar ID 355 (Reply All), it disables the button as expected, however it also disables the keyboard shortcut for Reply All without actually setting it as disabled in the disable shortcut keys.
Has anyone had success disabling a command bar ID without disabling the associated shortcut keys? If so, how did you do it?

  • Apple Mail Close Message Keyboard Shortcut

I am used to pressing "Esc" to close out of a mail message in Outlook and Thunderbird.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to closing a message in Mail? Is there a way to assign the the Esc key to do it?

If you want to close a message that you've read, just use Command-W, which is in the File menu. But if you see a dialogue box (which is what I thought you were referring to), you can't close those in that way and you can't create a shortcut for those, either.

  • Mail keyboard shortcuts scroll down message list

Anyone know any good keyboard shortcuts for navigating the message list in Mac Mail?

Use a TAB button to jump between different sections in Mail app. When messages list is highlighted, use UP and DOWN ARROWS to go up and down. If you want to go quickly to the bottom of your list, use FN+RIGHT ARROW, if you want to go quickly to the top of the list use FN+LEFT ARROW.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Mail won't stick

Hi. I've created a keyboard shortcut for Mail--Command-K to Get All New Mail--and changed the conflicting command (Command-K normally will Erase Deleted Messages in All Accounts). It worked well when I set it up, but only once. As soon as I quit out, my Keyboard Shortcut for Get All New Mail disappeared. Meanwhile, my new keyboard shortcut for Erase Deleted Messages in All Accounts still works.
And there's more: if I reset the "Command-K to Get All New Mail" shortcut, it will work only until I quit. And that's the case with no matter what shortcut I set up for "Get All New Mail." What gives? Any suggestions?

I'm surprised there hasn't been a reply to this, since this discussion board is one of the best around. Is there a more appropriate board in this forum for me to you post this?
    Thx!

  • Mark as Junk keyboard shortcut

I would like an easier keyboard shortcut to mark a message as junk.
I've tried using the keyboard shortcuts in system tools, but it's not working.
I believe the menu item I am trying to assign to a short cut is "As Junk Mail". However, the key I assign to this menu item doesn't work. only shift-command-j works.
    Thanks for any pointers.

If anyone else has the problem here is how I solved it.
Closed all apps. Restarted. Did repair permissions. Launched Mail. Turned Off Junk Filtering. Quit. Launched. Turned On Junk Filtering.
It appears to be working now.

  • Keyboard shortcut alerts?

    FYI: on a Mac, OS X 10.10.1, Acrobat 11.0.10
I added several global keyboard shortcuts on my Mac but each one so far either does not operate when I'm in Acrobat or gives an alert sound.
Two questions.... but maybe I should pursue this differently.
    1. Is there a list of all Acrobat shortcuts so I can determine if I have conflicts?
    2. Is there something inherent about Acrobat that interferes with one's created shortcuts?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Mail Message

I switched to Mail from MozillaThunderbird. In Thunderbird, one can move through OPEN mail messages via Keyboard Shortcut; a simple "F" for next message or "B" for previous message. In Mail, the only thing I've figured out is that one can arrow through one's LIST of messages, then use "Return" to open only the selected e-mail. From there, I must return to the list again (Cmmd+W)to open the next or previous message. This seems cumbersome an un-Maclike. Is there any way, from an already open message, to move to the next or previous message via Keyboard Shortcut? thanks

No. Mail lacks this functionality. The closer you can get is to have the preview pane visible below the message list and move from one message to another using the arrow keys.

  • Create keyboard shortcut to flag messages colors other than read

I'm trying to create a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to flag messages in Apple Mail a color other than red. (I've created smart folders associated with different color flags; I want to create a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to quickly flag an item so that it moves to the right smart folder.)
I've gone to system preferences/keyboard/keyboard shortcuts/application shorts and created new shortcuts for Apple Mail. )Control-option-command-o is one.) The 'All Controls' tab is clicked at the bottom. However, the commands don't work.
The instructions above suggest that it should be adding a new command to the menu. I don't see anything new though. Should there be something somwhere?
Thank you in advance for your help with this question. Any suggestions you have would be great appreciated.

    Hello,
When adding a keyboard shortcut for Mail :
    Type in "Menu Title" the menu item exactly as it appears in the application menu, for example "Orange";
In the "Keyboard Shortcut" press the key combination you want to associate.
You'll perhaps have to restart application for the new shortcut to have effect.
    Regards.

  • Message Send Keyboard Shortcut

Sometimes the Message->Send keyboard shortcut works and other times it doesn't. I can't really pinpoint why or under what circumstances this occurs. Does anyone else experience this?
    Cheers
    Joe

That thread did not help. There does not seem to be another app hijacking my shortcut. I did change the default shortcut from cmd-S to cmd-return. I did make it specific to Mail.app
When I Quit and reopen Mail, it seems to work. When is does eventually stops working and I press the shortcut, I get the dung sound. This is the same sound as if you were to hit a shortcut thats invalid.
This is getting rather annoying. I actually forgot I posted this because I was planning on posting the same question today :o)

  • Messages. Keyboard shortcuts not synchronised.

Since upgrading my Mac Pro to Yosemite 10.10 I don't have any keyboard shortcuts in Messages.  I have tried removing and adding my iCloud account, rebooting.  The shortcuts have re-appeared on Yosemite on my MacBook Messages, just not on the Mac Pro.  Was all okay on Mavericks.  I thought it might take a while...but it's been three days now...
I'm not talking about keyboard shortcuts to menu items, but shortcuts to phrases as in iOS, eg. 'omw' shortcut to 'On my way!' which is one of the default ones - even that doesn't work!
There doesn't seem to be a plist file for Messages?

I have this same issue in combination with some random text area that is selected (not visually!!). So every tool I want to access via the keyboard adds a letter to a random text area. (again not visually)
This is only visible after I select the text field or export it to an image. If I deselect the textarea it returns to its normal content. If I select the text field again its again.. the wrong text.
IE:  I have a label "home" if I select it it transforms to "hobevmme" if i deselect it it transforms back to "home"
How do i trigger this bug?:
So lets say I'm editing a textarea I press cmd+return to release the textarea then i want to brush something on a new layer so I press b that doesn't work so i press it again a couple of times (out of frustration). then i realize omg it's that bug again: then i have to select/check every text area to check if the labels have changed.
    Please fix this bug.

  • Keyboard shortcut for sending messages on Mail suddenly stops working

I've created a keyboard shortcut (Command + Return) specifically for sending manssages on Mail. When I open Mail, this keyboard shortcut works perfectly but suddenly it stops working.
If I close and reopen Mail, the keyboard shortcut starts to work again, but for a while.
    I'm using OS X 10.9.1 and Mail 7.1 (1827).

Give this a try if you haven't already.
    System Preferences
    Keyboard
    Shortcuts
At the bottom of the left panel go to:
    App Shortcuts
If Mail.app isn't there, add it.
    Under it add Send.
Now choose your key combo i.e.
    ⌘↵
Worked for me mail Version 7.1 (1827) running OS X 10.9.1.
