Keyboard shortcuts are gone

Not sure if this was due to a recent upgrade or what - All I have in my System Preferences > Keyboard > Text are my own personally-created keyboard shortcuts. All the system-installed ones (like for smart fractions and replacing (c) with the copyright symbol) are gone. Tried calling Apple Support but it wasn't a familiar problem to them and they figured it might have been a recent Yosemite upgrade that did it. Anybody out there have this same issue? If it was my personal ones that were gone, I could at least recreate them, but how do you type a smart fraction for one-half without just typing the shortcut phrase, "1/2"?

  • My keyboard shortcuts are gone after installing IOS 7...

Updated to IOS 7 yesterday and today noticed I had no keyboard shortcuts stored anymore... I looked online and apparently others have had problems with their keyboard shortcuts stopping working with IOS 6 in the past, but I didn't see anything about keyboards shortcuts having disappeared before. Apparently the shortcuts are stored/backed up in var/mobile/library/keyboard, but I can't access this directory because I haven't rooted my phone, so I have no way that I can think of to restore them.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    I have the same problem.
It seems to be linkend to the synchronisation of Documents and data with Icloud : I found this explanation in several forums for IOS 6 a(for example http://forums.macg.co/iphone/raccourcis-clavier-hs-ios-6-a-1201194.html, in french) and it seems to be the same thing in IOS 7.
If you inactivate the synchronisation for Documents and data to Icloud, you will recover your shortcuts, but it doesn' seem to be a stable solution.

  • Keyboard shortcuts are gone since Yosemite upgrade

I use a large number of keyboard shortcuts (the ones accessed in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Text).
Since the upgrade to Yosemite, the personal ones I've created (and which are still visible in the menu) do not work any longer.
The default ones from Apple, however, still function properly.
What do I have to do to get these working again?
I've tried obvious things like re-creating the personal ones. No go.
Thanks for any help on this.

I just installed ios7 on my iPhone 4s.  It seems to be working fine but all of the apps I had previously installed are gone.  They show up in my app store as purchased, but the shortcuts are gone.  Does anyone know how to get the shortcuts back?  Thanks!

I updated via my iPhone 4s.  The apps were on my iPhone 4s.  That's all the information that I have.  The update to ios7 seems to have gone smoothly - everything else is working, phone texting, email, internet, etc.  But all of the apps I had installed over the past year are no longer showing up as shortcuts.  No facebook, no twitter, no espn, etc.  They are all still listed in my app store as purchased, but the shortcuts and my folders are gone.  Thanks.

  • Upgraded to I OS8 and all my shortcuts are gone!

After upgrading to iOS 8 on my iPad air, I am in disbelief to see that my hundreds and hundreds of shortcuts are gone! How could this happen? Apparently, according to Apple support, there is no way to get them back! How can this be possible!?
I use these shortcuts for everything I do.  This is very inconvenient.

Did you lose all your bookmarks, e.g., Bookmarks menu is empty or has basic default bookmarks?
Could you check whether you still have your bookmarkbackups folder?
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
This should open a Finder window to your personal settings folder (AKA your Firefox profile folder)
If there is a bookmarkbackups folder in there, check inside for dated daily backup files. Can you find them? If so, you can use the Restore feature described in this article: [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]. This process completely replaces whatever partial or default bookmarks you might have.
By the way, did you lose your history, too, or just bookmarks?

  • My "go to in point" and "go to out point" keyboard shortcuts are not working, and the default keys arnt either? any help would be amazing!

my "go to in point" and "go to out point" keyboard shortcuts are not working, and the default keys aren't either? any help would be amazing!  I use these keys a million times a hour and since I have switched to cc I cant get them to work. track selection makes no difference or if there are markers on the timeline or not.
Anyone else feel me on this?
    any help?

Well that still didn't make any kind of difference.  I would just do without it but I've becomes really use to it with Avid for so long.  I have to admit there are a lot of small moments like this that makes me miss Avid.  Any other suggestions? I have checked the keyboard shortcuts a few times and maybe I'm just missing something here...

  • Keyboard shortcuts are not showing, but still exist!?

I've tried to look for this issue, but I can't seem to find anyone else experiencing this... it's a strange one. Here is the situation:
First, I'm speaking of iOS 5.0.1, and the keyboard shortcuts located under General->Keyboard->Shortcuts.
Upon upgrading to iOS 5, I was pretty stoked about this massive time-saver that was previously only possible through (already forgot the $5 app's name!) and was further restricted in the fact that the only apps it could be used in were those specifically coded to use its API. Anyway, thankful it's now native!
Was... thankful. When they were all showing up in the listing as they are supposed to. Something happened... maybe the upgrade from 5.0->5.0.1, I can't pinpoint a specific time when they all decided to turn to ghosts! Every last one of them, looks like they were erased... the list is totally bare. That's misleading, though, because the shortcuts that I had created still work fine! They just fail to show up in the list. Odd... There have been a couple of rare occassions that I cannot find a way to reproduce where I could just put something in the Search box, (any letter, or a space) and they would all show up again as if they never left!
Until you try and start editing or messing with any of them... any edits will crash the Settings app upon hitting Save. Additionally, you obviously cannot add a shortcut term that already exists then save it "overwriting" an old one as a trick... it just says it already exists and you can't use that shortcut term.
I did take some screenshots of when I got it to actually show up (and still have no idea what I did to cause them to briefly appear as search results -- I can try the same thing now and I get no results found. Anyone have any idea what in the world could be going on, or how I can fix this? It's a real pain, considering any new ones I add also disappear... so many of them that I created months ago, I can't recall what the exact shorthand was, and I'm out of
My only thought for a hopefully "sure fix" would be to do a RESET on keyboard settings. I'd like to avoid it if at all possible, as that's going to erase not only the mass of shortcuts that already exist, but will also reset my custom words/anything it has "learned" from my input.
As far as troubleshooting to see if anything made a difference-- I have added extra keyboards, removed all keyboards, changed the default keyboard to another language, you name it as far as adding or subtracting (or even changing software/hardware keyboard layouts out) -- all to no avail.
Here are the few screenshots I was able to get during the "fluke" time that I "sort of" got them to reappear:
    Did a search on "s"--
I believe this was a freshly added one? Or it alone, showed up:
This one I simply searched on a single (space):
At no other point have I been able to recreate this temporary resurrection since then, but as proof that they still are in effect:
I'd really like to go in and change some of them, for instance, I defined "nm" as "not much" and instead, I find myself using that regularly as shorthand for nevermind (which I originally defined as n/m or nvm)... but any action on them... editing, deleting, etc... results in the Settings crash, as mentioned, immediately upon hitting Save... *boop* gone.
Do any of you brilliant minds have any suggestions to try that don't involve resetting the keyboard settings (wiping it out and redoing the OS is not an option for something that is really mostly an annoyance and inconvenience. Too much time, effort and trouble for me to have to do that, unfortunately... Has anyone seen or heard of this happening to anyone else? In closing, I can't tie the disappearance to any specific event, other than "possibly the 5.0.1 upgrade" (and that's just a guess).
What's not a guess was that my iPhone 4 was running super fast and battery worked great at 5.0! Was very happy! 5.0.1 destroyed this thing. It's now slow, constantly crashing, and my batttery (which unlike 4S owners) was working great... now I am having to charge it 3-4 times per day! That's not even with heavy usage! That's another story and has its own (very long and irate) thread. My thought: should've just stayed with 5.0; what possessed me to apply a patch for an issue that I wasn't even experiencing!
Oh, one last probably important bit of info -- firmware is clean, it's not JB or anything. Upgrade to 5.0 went smooth as can be, and I was very pleased with 5.0 -- now I'm considering downgrading back to 5.0 (thankfully saved my SHSH's) though I don't know the implications of what FURTHER havoc that could cause, so I'm patiently waiting for 5.1 to not fix everyone's issues! I never said I was an optimist, but I do consider myself a realist! *nods*
Crap. After posting this, I was able to find these other few users experiencing the same thing. Didn't mean to dupe post but at least here's the cross reference which I'll post there too:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16707743#16707743

I lost all my keyboard shortcuts on my iPhone 5s after upgrading to iOS 8. They still showed up on my iPad Air (iOS 8) and iMac (10.9.5). There were, however, massive sync problems, sometimes they would only flow from one device to all the others, sometimes from one device to only one of the other two, sometimes not at all.
I deleted all my shortcuts and started from scratch, deleting “~/Library/Application Support/Ubiquity”, ~/Library/Dictionaries” and “~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~TextInput” from the iMac and KeyboardDomain from my iOS devices.
    Rebooted everything a dozen times.
Toggled Documents & Data Sync off and on a dozen times too in all kinds of combination with rebooting and deleting the aforementioned files.
Everything always starts working and syncing fine for a very short while, but sooner or later one of my devices stops receiving new shortcuts as I re-add them.
I reboot that device and it catches up. I enter new shortcuts, and that device doesn’t get any new shortcuts. This time, a reboot doesn’t fix anything.
After using my devices for a while, I notice shortcuts are entirely gone from both the iPhone and iPad, but not from the iMac.
I even upgraded my iPhone 5s to a 6, and right off the bat it had issues with keyboard shortcut sync. I also setup my iPad as new, and same thing: right off the bat, sync issues with keyboard shortcuts.

  • Keyboard shortcuts - are they supposed to be an enigma?

Is there a comprehensive guide to keyboard short cuts for Apple keyboards, anywhere, and presumably written by Apple?
It bothered me when I bought my iMac 6 years ago, but I've tolerated it, and found what I needed bit by bit, via forums like this one and countless other consumer blogs. But now I have just bought a MacBook Air, with less 'direct' keys, and once again I'm finding myself googling for answers (e.g. deleting forward).
Surely, surely, Apple produces documentation on all the shortcuts they have purposely built...... haven't they?
Also, with Microsoft products they put those handy underscores under the toolbar options (e.g. F for File), so you can open it up and see what's underneath. With Apple, that doesn't seem possible; i.e. can I open the File menu, using the keyboard?
I know we have the mouse, trackpad, etc... but I like using the keyboard! And if Apple have gone to the trouble of creating all these shortcuts....why can't we have one complete source of truth on what they are? Hopefully I'm wrong and there's a magical document that someone will enlightmen me about.....

AFAIK, there isn't a keyboard shortcut to open the menu...
    You're welcome.

  • Secret dragging tricks and keyboard shortcuts - are these published anywhere?

I have searched for some and stumbled upon others. But I have not seen any of these published or posted anywhere. If so, can you tell me? Either way, you may find some useful ones here. Enjoy! (I think most of these work in Lion. Any keyboard shortcuts you know for Time Machine would be most welcome.)
    *** THE DOCK ***
Press ^F3 to move to the dock. Use the arrow keys to select an icon. You can also use autocomplete (type the first few letters of the icon's name). Then press Opt-arrow_key to move the *icon* among the other icons on the Dock. Thus you can change the order of the icons on the Dock using only the keyboard.
    *** DRAGGING TRICKS ***
    o SAVE-AS SHEET TRICK
Open an app's Save As sheet. Drag a folder or its proxy icon to anywhere in the Save As sheet except the sidebar and that updates the directory (folder) field with that folder. Drag a file or its proxy icon to the Save As sheet (anywhere except the sidebar) and that updates both the directory (folder) and file fields accordingly.
Why do I do this? I find it easier to use the actual Finder, or I may already have a Finder window in the right directory.
You can also click on a directory or file in the Save As sheet to populate the directory or file fields, respectively. Then edit the filename to a slightly different name.
o COPY A FOLDER TREE TO A TEXT DOCUMENT
Open a true text-only editor session using an app like TextWrangler (not TextEdit!). Drag a folder (or its proxy icon) from the Finder into the editor window. Viola`! The names of the folder and all its subfolders and files are pasted into the text buffer in a properly indented form.
o COPY A FILE TO A TEXT DOCUMENT
Drag a file from the Finder into a text-only editor like TextWrangler or similar (not TextEdit!) and the _contents_ of the file (not its icon) are inserted into the document.
o MAKE A NEW FILE THAT CONTAINS SELECTED TEXT
Select some text. Drag it to a folder. This creates a "textClipping" file which contains the selected text. Opens as a "Finder document".
o COPY A PHOTO FROM IPHOTO TO A FOLDER
Open iPhoto. Drag (to copy) a photo to a folder. Makes a jpeg file of the photo in that folder.
    *** KEYBOARD TRICKS ***
    o MENUS AND LISTS
Opt-U/D: Move highlight bar to top or bottom of most menus and lists. Does not work in Spotlight drop-down menu. Works in Snow Leopard Mac Mail (v 4.5, anyway) if you hold it down for a second: you get an error signal, but it works anyway.
PgUp/PgDn | Home/End: Moves highlight bar to top or bottom of menus. Moves only the view for lists.
Opt-Spacebar: Move highlight to the alphabetically first item in a menu (except in the Spotlight drop-down menu).
    o SPOTLIGHT DROP-DOWN MENU
After selecting an item on the drop-down menu via the arrow keys:
    Cmd-Return: Open enclosing folder.
    o SPOTLIGHT WINDOW
If ^F7 is set to "all controls", press ^F7 four times if it's the first search in a particular Spotlight window; two, otherwise. This moves you to the list of results.
If ^F7 is set to "text boxes and lists only", just Tab.
    o CALENDAR WIDGET
Home: go to the current year and month.
Up, down, left, right arrows: go one year back, one year forward, one month back, one month forward. Hold a L or R arrow down to autorepeat through the years. (You can't do _that_ with the mouse!) Also works with U and D for the months.
    o SPELL CHECK
Cmd-Shift-; - Open spelling pane. But you knew that one. Press ^F6 to get to the pane. Tab around to everything except Define and Guess. With the focus on the replacements list, use the arrow keys to select a replacement word from the list. (Press the spacebar to run the control with the highlight perimiter and press Return to run the control with the solid highlighting.)
    o MAIL
Cmd-I - Open Account Info window
    o NAVIGATING HELP PANES
    - Old-style help panes :
Open the menu pane in the usual way. The Highlight perimeter will be on the search window.
Tab: Move among the Search field, the page, and the controls on top. Add Shift to reverse.
    When on the page:
Use the usual navigation keys -- Up, Down, Home, End, Page up, and Page Down, Spacebar, Shift-Spacebar -- to scroll through the page.
Opt-Tab: move among the links on the page or items in a "Help Topics" list. The highlight perimeter will be rectangular. Press Return or Enter to click the selected link or item. Add Shift to reverse direction.
Cmd-F: Open the Find bar. Move about with Tab. Move among the arrows with L or R arrow keys. To find a string: Type your search string in the Find field. Press Return or Enter. Press again to find the next occurrence, etc.
To go to the page from the Find bar: Shift-Tab to the left or right arrow. Then press Shift-Tab two more times.
To close the Find bar: Tab to Done and press the spacebar or just press Escape.
You can return to the app via ^F6, but the help pane stays open.
When the highlight perimeter is on one of the arrow controls, press Spacebar to click it. If the left arrow control is selected press the down arrow to see places going backward. If the right arrow control is selected press the Down arrow to see a list of places going forward. Either way, use the usual menu navigational shortcuts.
When the highlight perimeter is on the Home control, press the down arrow to get a menu of apps. (The mouse way for this is to click and hold and "drag" and release as above.) The usual menu navigational shortcuts are valid. Also, you can press the spacebar to go Home.
When the highlight perimeter is on the Gear button, press the spacebar or down arrow to get the drop-down menu. The usual menu navigational shortcuts are in effect.
(To do any of the above three with the mouse, click on the control and hold the mouse button down, then without releasing the mouse button, move the pointer to highlight the desired item on the menu and release the mouse button.)
    - New-style help panes:
Open the menu pane in the usual way. The Highlight perimeter will be on the search window.
Tab to move around to most things. The table of contents becomes keyboard-active one Tab-press past the Search field, at which point use the L and R arrow keys to navigate the Contents panel, and the U and D arrow keys to move the down and up the page.
To be able to use PageUp and PageDn, Tab to the back/forward button, then press Shift-Opt-Tab.
Cmd-F: Opens the Find bar. Navigate with Tab and L/R arrow keys. When you are on this bar, press Shift-Tab repeatedly until the highlight perimeter moves out. Then press Shift-Tab once more to go back to the page, where the L and R arrow keys move you around the TOC sidebar and the U and D arrow keys scroll the page.
AFAIK, you can choose Get Started or Browse Help only with the mouse.
You can return to the app via ^F6, but the help pane stays open.

I guess you meant that unfortunately these don't have them.
    (1) I meant that, unfortunately for your impressive work, there's nothing in it that hasn't already been documented elsewhere. The two items I mentioned contain your shortcuts, and many more besides.
I don't see any of them in either. I have Pogue's book and they're not there. In fact, I emailed these tricks to him and he was impressed with some of them. And of course there are more. I never claimed to have an exhaustive list. In fact, I doubt anyone has such a list.
    (2) Mac OS X v10.6 has been out for, what is it, 3 years? If you think that there are any 'secret' shortcuts left, then you seriously underestimate the average Mac user. Some of that stuff is even older. For instance, the "Save-As Sheet Trick" dates back to Jaguar, or even before that. "Make a New File That Contains Selected Text" is older than Mac OS X itself!
Well, first of all there's no need to get hostile.
I don't underestimate the average Mac user. But I would venture to guess that most are heavily mouse oriented and would not even be interested in the keyboard tricks I posted. And I only said that I haven't seen them on any website, not that no one else in the world knows about them.
Additionally, there have been things missed by the smartest of people. Stereo vision was missed even by Issac Newton, one of the biggest geniuses to grace the planet! It was Wheatstone who first picked up on it. And it used to be thought that a cube flying by at relatvisitic speed would appear foreshortened in the direction of motion. In fact, as was noted decades after relativity was published, it in fact appears rotated. If super smart people could miss this, then perhaps those few who publish these tricks may not know about them.
Re the save-as trick and the new-file-contains-your-text tricks: fine, they're old, but so are many of the tricks that are posted on websites. So why some old ones but not others? How about cut and paste? I bet they're pretty old but that doesn't prevent people from posting them, as in your first reference!
    (3) Also unfortunately, your listing mixes up shortcuts and 'tricks' of different categories. For instance, "Copy a File to a Text Document" is not secret, it is not a trick, and it is not relevant. What an app does with a file dropped onto an open document of its own does not depend on the system, but on the app and how it was programmed. TextEdit inserts a text file's path while TextWrangler inserts the text file's contents not because the former is not a text editor, but because that's how each was designed to work. And TextWrangler's behaviour is documented in the accompanying manual.
So one of my tricks is lame. I don't see that as that big a deal.
Bottom line: I don't see any of them in the docs you referenced.

  • Macbook Pro Keyboard shortcuts are not working

    Hi there,
In the last week or so my keyboard shortcuts for volume control are no longer working - even the mute button has no effect. when I press the shortcuts the volume adjustment image pops up and the computer makes the clicking noise, but the volume doesn't change. I can change it by going into system preferences>audio but it's fairly annoying. Would really appreciate some help on how to solve this! Thanks

This solution worked for me! I have a MacBook Pro OS X Yosemite 10.10.1; after new software download I had to rely on earbuds or external speakers. Weird solution, but it worked, so thanks for sharing!

  • Basic keyboard shortcuts are not working!

So I am freelancing at a new machine and all shortcuts using the "space bar" are not functioning (hand, zoom, etc). I've dumped the preferences and restarted indesign but same result. The "space bar" shortcuts are fine in PSD and AI, just not in INDD.
    INDD v. 5.02
    Mac OSX v. 10.5.2
Please help! I'm a gimp without my shortcuts!!!!

I was able to get my space bar and zoom tool working again, by changing a preference in Entourage. Go to Preference, General and deselect
Use Microsoft Office keyboard shortcuts for editing text
I found this answer on another site, and it didn't work at first but after restarting both Entourage and InDesign I had my hotkeys back.
I still don't have my bullet lists though :(
If anyone knows an answer I'd really appreciate it.

  • Some keyboard shortcuts are not working

I have found a few keyboard shortcuts that don't work, no matter what you set the shortcut to. I only found two, and they are "Show Desktop", and "Show Launchpad". I have set them to many different combinations, none of which seem to work. every once in a while, it will work, but after my computer goes to sleep, it doesn't work again. It only works some of the times after I restart or shutdown. When I open the shortcut tab under the keyboard settings menu, it always defaults to the screenshots tab, and I don't know if this is a bug or not.

there may be a conflict with some system-level shortcuts, for instance the shortcuts in the System Prefs for Dashboard and Expose default to F9, F10, F11, which will supersede the default FCP shortcuts for insert, overwrite, and replace edits.
Check your keyboard layouts in FCP - if the shortcuts are assigned, then check those two System Prefs panes (keyboard, Dashboard & Expose) for system-level shortcuts that might be conflicting.

  • Nautilus keyboard shortcuts are unreliable

I have a bad bug in GNOME 2.30 - keyboard shortcuts aren't 100% reliable, like "Delete" key doesn't always delete files, "Ctrl+C" shortcuts doesn't always copy files, and so on. It's mostly reproducable when selecting items with the mouse or moving mouse while pressing the keys. I think it's somehow related to these old bugs: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/538982 and https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137455. I have exacly same behaviour as in these bug reports. I had this bug in GNOME 2.28 and still have it in GNOME 2.30

I have exactly the same bug and it is probably the most annoying bug I have ever had with GNOME. Obviously, this is also very old since the first report is six years old. Hopefully it will get fixed for 3.0.
There is also this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/465284 and this https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=517639 which, in addition to the links you posted, are essentially describing the very same problem.

  • All keyboard shortcuts are disabled, and I can't enable them - resetting firefox or safe mode not helping

For example, Ctrl-T is grayed out / disabled so I can't open a new tab using the keyboard.
Ditto for ALL other keyboard shortcuts - they're all disabled / grayed out.
PS - I've used Firefox for years, this happened about a month or so ago, and it's been that way ever since, even after rebooting computer.

*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on ''Help'' (or click on ''Help'' in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled''.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

  • Keyboard shortcuts are broke in iOS6

Ever since I downloaded iOS 6 the evening it was released, my keyboard shortcuts have simply not worked or have to be retyped several times before it's recognized. I did a hard restart (home + power) twice now, and it seems to improve for a day or two, afterwhich it goes back to not working. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the syncing of the shortcuts? Or if it's just a glitch.
