Keyboard Shortcuts In Mail Without Preview Pane

Greetings, I like using any mail client (Mac or Windows or Linux) without the preview pane being open. This means the email in the Inbox is shown in list form, and opening an email means double clicking it to view it in a new window. However, on Mac there seems to be no keyboard shortcut to move to the previous or next email, which means I have to close the email, then double click the next email and becomes somewhat tedious.
If the preview pane is open the up and down arrows (or the three finger swipe) moves to the previous or next message, but this doesn't work if the email is open in a new window.
Does anyone know a keyboard shortcut that will work when an email is open in a new window?
Thanks in advance.

Yeah just want to agree that this is big flaw in Mac Mail.  Reading mail in preview pane is flawed to me for two reasons... one is that if you single click a message in your list (let's say to file it or flag it), it instantly gets marked as unread.  A lot of times this is NOT my intention.  So i accidentally mark stuff I haven't read thoroughly as unread.  Even more dramatic is that if you are clicked on a message in your message list (in the inbox, for example) and you press the delete key, it deletes the message (as it should) and then instantly highlights the previous message in your inbox... thus marking it READ!  ugh.. certainly not my intention, and caused me to mistakenly think messages were read (when they weren't) so often, I switched to having messages open in their own window.  I actually really have come to like this... i keep the mailboxes and message list in one monitor and then open the individual mail message mostly full screen in a 2nd monitor.  But now that leaves me without the ability to quickly go to a previous or next message from that individual mail message.  WHY???  As others have mentioned... just about every other mail client (including MAIL on iPhone!!) has buttons in the toolbar of the message window for NEXT or PREVIOUS message!!

  • How do I create a Keyboard Shortcut in Mail 3.1?

I use a CRM software call Daylite that has a plug-in (DMI) for Mail so they can transfer information between the two programs.
In order to connect to the program you must go to "File>Connect to Daylite" in Mail. The problem is there's no keyboard shortcut to make this connection.
Is there a way to create a keyboard shortcut in Mail to achieve this?
    Any assistance would be great.

Hey, If this helps... <post edited by Host>
Go to System Preferences > Mouse & Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts
Scroll all the way down in the list - you should see some thing like "Application Keyboard Shortcuts" and a submenu of "All Applications"
Right beneath that, there is a plus button to add a keyboard shortcut, Click That Button
Select Mail from the application menu
Menu Title "Connect To Daylite" - make sure it's typed EXACTLY as it shows up in the menu, even punctuation...
Enter your shortcut and press the "add" button

  • Moving Mail Message Preview Pane to Right of Screen Like in Entourage

    Hello,
Would anyone be able to tell me if I can move my Mail Message Preview Pane to the right side of the screen like I can do in Entourage? I prefer the message preview screen on the right side instead of at the bottom as is the default in mail.
    Thanks,
    Ppsychling

    Ppsychling,
Unfortunately, that is not an option. The only choice that the user has regarding the Preview Pane is to show or hide.
Your valid feature request should be made through Mac OS X Feedback.

  • What's up with the Command-9 keyboard shortcut in Mail?

I’m using Apple Mail 4.2 (1077). If you look up “Keyboard Shortcuts” in Mail’s help, there’s a keyboard shortcut “Command-9” by the entry “Open RSS mailbox”. It doesn’t do anything though. I’m just wondering—was this a feature in the past that was removed, and whose entry in Mail’s help didn’t get edited? Or can I enable it somehow?

The fix was: Turn off Junk Mail filter
    quit mail
    turn on junk mail filter
(and reset database for good measure)

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Mail won't stick

Hi. I've created a keyboard shortcut for Mail--Command-K to Get All New Mail--and changed the conflicting command (Command-K normally will Erase Deleted Messages in All Accounts). It worked well when I set it up, but only once. As soon as I quit out, my Keyboard Shortcut for Get All New Mail disappeared. Meanwhile, my new keyboard shortcut for Erase Deleted Messages in All Accounts still works.
And there's more: if I reset the "Command-K to Get All New Mail" shortcut, it will work only until I quit. And that's the case with no matter what shortcut I set up for "Get All New Mail." What gives? Any suggestions?

I'm surprised there hasn't been a reply to this, since this discussion board is one of the best around. Is there a more appropriate board in this forum for me to you post this?
    Thx!

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Mail Message

I switched to Mail from MozillaThunderbird. In Thunderbird, one can move through OPEN mail messages via Keyboard Shortcut; a simple "F" for next message or "B" for previous message. In Mail, the only thing I've figured out is that one can arrow through one's LIST of messages, then use "Return" to open only the selected e-mail. From there, I must return to the list again (Cmmd+W)to open the next or previous message. This seems cumbersome an un-Maclike. Is there any way, from an already open message, to move to the next or previous message via Keyboard Shortcut? thanks

No. Mail lacks this functionality. The closer you can get is to have the preview pane visible below the message list and move from one message to another using the arrow keys.

  • How can I (re-)enable keyboard shortcuts in Mail?

    Hi there,
In Mail v 4.5, the "command-6" key combination has somehow become disabled (greyed out).  I use this quite often to check the contents of the junk folder (Mailbox - Go To - Junk).  Any idea(s) how get it back?
    Thanks a lot,
    Jacobo

I don't know if Cubase lets you reassign keyboard shortcuts within the program, but that is the first place to look. Many pro apps like Ableton Live and Photoshop have a keyboard shortcut editor that only changes shortcuts within that one application.
If Cubase won't let you do that, then here's another possibility. Go into System Preferences/Keyboard and Mouse, click Keyboard Shortcuts tab, scroll all the way down to the bottom where it says Application Keyboard Shortcuts, click the plus button to add an application, and start editing shortcuts for Cubase only.
If that does not let you override the function keys, try downloading FunctionFlip and use it to toggle the function key just for the specific function keys you want to override. This has been a very useful utility in overriding just some function keys. FunctionFlip is a way to apply the OS X Keyboard preference "Use all F1, F2 keys as standard function keys" at a key level, instead of toggling the whole row.

  • Some keyboard shortcuts in Mail OS 10.9 don't work

Some keyboard shortcuts no longer work. Such as [option page-down] for moving down a page at a time of email subjects. Control Page Down doesn't work either. Others are wacky and give different results such as Function right arrow does the same thing as End and Function left arrow does the same thing as Home which is a bit redundant.
Did they change to a different combination of keystrokes are were they left out? Thanks to anyone that can find out.   -Derryl

  • Attaching Word and PDF files in Mail without preview in the middle of a message

I am using Mail but often attaching Word docs and PDFs. Word attachments appear as small icons, but PDFs as preview and usually in the middle of the message. Can I attach PDFs as small icons and not in the middle  of a message? Having just moved to Mac from PC I am missing the tidyness of Outlook, but if you can help me I'll persist.

I found this solution in a previous thread:
    1. Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
    2. copy and paste this line after the $:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
    3. hit return
    4. you may need to restart Mail for the change to take effect, it worked for me without restarting Mail.
    5. to change it back you would do
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool false

  • Quick keyboard shortcut to show Overprint Preview

The old Command+Shift+7 to toggle Overprint Preview doesn't seem to work in Acrobat Pro 9. Is there another way of quickly toggling this function without having to enter Advanced>Print Production>Output Preview?

Wow, guess I need to reinstall Acrobat 8 because it makes for a faster production tool. I thought I was upgrading. Guess I'll never see the logic or reason in the things Adobe does when producing new versions.

  • Are there Keyboard shortcuts for Mail? How to quickly move items?

I just came from Entourage, which I was happy to leave. However I have a ton of folders where I organize my emails after I read them in my inbox. I really miss the "Move" button in the Entourage toolbar, which allowed me to start typing the name of folder I wanted to move an email to.
With Mail I have to go and find the destination folder, which is sometimes 5 levels deeps. Yikes! It does seem quicker to do it in the Message menu, but still it's clumsy.
Any tips? Any keystrokes? New to Mail and loving it!
    Jon

You can bypass the Message menu and Control-click on a message or group of messages, then select the Move To item from the contextual menu and select the folder from there.

  • Mavericks & Mail Preview Pane

I just downloaded OS X Mavericks and now in Mail the preview pane is on the right side not the bottom like how it previously was. Is there anyway to put it back at the bottom without changing it to Classic layout?

Hi jrdalvi, did you ever figure out how to get it back? I just did, I used your trick to get back the classic preview on the bottom by clicking classic layout. Then I unclicked classic layout and you'll see a small bar on the right hand side, place your cursor on it and you'll see a small arrow, simply drag it to the left and the preview will appear.

  • Mail and Keyboard Shortcut Preferences

Ever since the last system update, I haven't been able to set keyboard shortcuts for Mail in the Keyboard preferences. I'm not sure if it was the firmware update or the system one, but it just boinks at me.
I was able to set one default in the terminal, but it erased all my other preferences, which I can't get back.
So, if I do it from Terminal, so I have to do a whole list at once? Or will you guys get the application keyboard shortcut preferences fixed some time soon?

Now  Keyboard Preferences is accepting changes for no apparent reason - I haven't restarted the computer or anything. Anyway, I need to figure out what's the magic word for "junk this message." I have Junk, Junk Mail, and Mark As Junk Mail all as command - J, but it's still not working. Maybe there is no keyboard shortcut? Do I have to script it or something? I have having to switch between the keyboard and clicking all the time.

  • Email is viewable only in Preview pane.

My install of Snow Leopard last Monday went fine and I never experienced any of the Mail issues folks seem to be having. I was able to send and receive fine, my mailboxes and settings were all imported properly and all has been great until yesterday.
I usually just view my emails in the Preview pane, but yesterday I wanted to print one out so I double-clicked to open it in its own window and nothing happened. In the Message Viewer, the email in question went from a blue highlight to a gray highlight. And in the top Window menu, that email has a check mark next to it, but it is nowhere to be seen. I tried to print it, just to see if it would print something (it didn't). It's still showing up in my list of open windows, but without the check mark, and I can't remove it from the list. And I still can't see it anywhere.
I've Repaired Permissions, restarted, and rebuilt all my mailboxes, but now I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

    Don G. wrote:
No luck with Expose, either. Strange.
Also, I should mention that when this first started yesterday, I figured I'd just quit everything and restart. Well, I was unable to quit Mail. I had to Force Quit, Same thing happened after the restart. I got sidetracked for a while and was getting ready to leave the house, so I figured I'd try again and this time it quit without any problem. But this missing email window problem persists.
*Here's a little update*. I just tried to print an email again, even though it didn't appear in its own window. It took a good 30 seconds for the print window to display, and then I used Preview from the Print window and the mail showed up in the print preview. I was able to print it that way, but that was the only way I could see that email (other than Mail's preview pane).
Back in Mail, under the Window menu, the suspect mail still shows in the list. But it shows up without the checkmark, so Mail doesn't think it's open. This is confirmed by the fact that the "Close" menu item is grayed out and cmd-Q does nothing. Other emails I try to open don't show up, but at least I can get them out of the list in the Window menu.
I'm tempted to try dragging over the old preferences from the clone, unless you think that will really screw things up even more.
I would not do that. if you had a snow leopard backup then you could try that. as it is I suggest you try the following. copy the folder /users/username/library/mail AND the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to the desktop. then delete /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. then start Mail. you'll have to recreate your email accounts. once you do they should recognize their existing mailboxes. see if it works ok after that.

  • Not having a preview pane

I do not want the preview pane when I open Mail. I can get rid of it after I open it but it comes back after I close Mail and then reopen Mail. Any way to not have the preview pane when I open Mail, other than leaving Mail open.

preview pane should not come back like that if it was collapsed when you quit Mail. your Mail preferences are probably corrupt. you can reset them but you'll have to re-enter all your email accounts info. quit mail and delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. start mail and recreate your accounts. they will recognize their existing mailboxes once recreated. try collapsing the preview pane again and it should stay that way on mail restarts.
