Keyboard shortcuts on drop down save menus

i have a question about the little drop down menulet that appears when i try to quit a document i have been working on, either in Textedit or Pages and sometimes Preview. the 'Save' option is highlighted in blue and is thus the default, so pressing enter selects it. I remember reading somewhere that if you want to select one of the other options, ie 'Dont save', or 'Cancel', there is some kind of shortcut for that involving the first letter of the of the menu item; for example Command-C for 'Cancel'. At the moment i am just using the trackpad for this. thanks for your help!

hi- thank you to both of you. the question is answered but i dont know what the etiquette of awarding the 'question solved' points is here. Because the question had two parts, Malcolm Rayfield answered both parts, but A.Carlo also kindly answered the second part, so i don't know how to give the points without excluding A.Carlo. but i guess if i can only give the points to one person, it should be Malcolm, since he answered both?

  • How to disable keyboard shortcut "Control Shift Down"

    Hi,
I'm mildly surprised that I couldn't find the answer to this little problem I have.
I'm running a PC version of Excel through VMWare under Mac OS X 10.7, and it works perfectly fine except that the keyboard shortcut for selecting continguous cells in a column - Control-Shift-Down - produces a weird "slow-mo" version of F10, which is showing all windows in the current application.
First of all, I hardly see this "feature" to be of any practical use as you can accomplish the same (without the slow-mo effect) by hitting F10 by default.
Secondly, this prevents me from doing something actually useful in Excel which is selecting continguous cells in a column.
Can someone please give a tip to disable this useless shortcut? I've looked everywhere in Keyboard settings in Preferences without success.
Can't believe no one else has the same issue.
    TIA
    -Wk

Thanks a lot for your post. I tried your suggestion and indeed got the Excel short-cut back. It wasn't obvious as "Mission Control" and "Application Windows" are mapped to F9 and F10 (rather than the ctrl-shift-down" combo).
It's ok since I don't really have any use for shortcut launching "Mission Control" or "Application windows".

  • Drop down "save" screen too large

I frequently save web pages as PDFs.  When I select "save" or "save as" from the file menu, a drop down page opens to allow me to select the location in which to save the data.  The bottom of this new page extends beyond the screen so that I am unable to see or select the "Save" button to commit to the location.  The original screen is sized correctly , it's only this "save" screen that is too large.  How can I resize this drop down page?

    Hi
    quitting Safari then trashing
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist
should reset that & anything else customisable... but if you'd rather keep other changes, try the following command in Terminal, after quitting Safari
I'm assuming that you do mean the Save window created when say on this page, you choose File - Save as...
    defaults delete com.apple.safari NSNavPanelExpandedSizeForSaveMode
you could also likely click the expand/contract arrow next to the 'export as' name box - which will make the window smaller & thus hopefully usable - but remove some of its features, including the corner drag to alter its size.

  • Keyboard Shortcut for 'Don't Save'?

I prefer keyboard shortcuts to the mouse for many things and when I close an unneeded file (in TextEdit for example) I used to type cmd-d for don't save.  That is no long an option and it also seems impossible to create a short cut in software like Keyboard Maestro because the dialog location depends on the window size. Any ideas on how to make cmd-d work again?

  • Contribute and drop down CSS menus

Is it possible to edit drop down horizonal CSS menus with
Contribute? I'd like to recommend this product to a client but
their site (which I'm building in Dreamweaver) will have drop downs
and the client will need to be able to change, add, or delete them
    later.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you could use serverside (php, asp, ssi) -includes in
combination with a CSS based menu with hyperlinks en provide your
client with the url to the included files, so they can update the
content. For ideas you could take a look at this site

Am i missing something, i can't seem to create sub menus.Should these not automatically drop from menu button when i have a sibling page extending from that page.
    Eugene

I have juist learned how do to this, so I can help.
In Design Mode, click in your menu bar and then right to it on the blue option arrow. Onder Options/Menu Type choose All Pages. Then you will get a drop down list showing your sub menus.

  • Drop Down List Menus

I am trialing LiveCycle ES2.  When using a drop down list as a menu and the user selects an item from the menu, can a "populated" field show information on the selection made?  I am not skilled in the XML type language and am solely using the drag and drop features of ES2.  Thanks in advance for any replies.

Yes. You could do either of the following (but not both).
    // form1.page1.dropDown::exit - (JavaScript, client)
    form1.page1.textField.rawValue = this.rawValue;
The second option has the advantage of making the field 'textField' read-only (which may or may not be desirable).
    // form1.page1.textField::calculate - (JavaScript, client)
    this.rawValue = form1.page1.dropDown.rawValue;

  • Photoshop elements 11 drop down & side menus parts invisible

My photoshop elements 11 seems to be completly screwed up.  The brush tools and/or healing tools that normally bring up a tool menu at the bottom of the screen have only half of the box visible.  I cannot change the options because only half the box is shown or none of the options are visible.  Its like only part of the code loaded what is spposed to appear.
The side menu is also missing parts in the very bottom left corner.
It seems like it has something to do with the screen resolution on my macbook.   But this is the only program that has the problem.
    I have a retna display macbook 11.
I am so frustrated with PE 11, and do not understand why everyone thinks itis so fantastic.
If there is another adobe program someone could suggest, I will listen.

PSE11 runs fine on my Macbook Pro. Are you able to drag out the bottom right corner to fill the screen?
What is your screen size e.g. 11, 13 or 15 inch and resolution?
You could try rebuilding the prefs by clicking the menu in Expert Mode and choosing:
Preferences >> General (under the Adobe PSE menu)
Then click the button to reset prefs on next launch. Close the app and launch again.

  • How do I add "Save As" to the Pages drop down menu?

How do I add "Save As" to the Pages drop down menu?

It took me awhile but I found what I was looking for. This is posted at http://www.tuaw.com/2012/07/29/get-save-as-back-on-mountain-lions-file-menu-easi ly-and-without/
Option 1. Terminal.app If you are comfortable using Terminal.app, you can add a different keyboard shortcut this with one simple line. First, quit all your apps except Finder and Terminal. Then paste this command (as one line) into Terminal.app (and press Return):
    1
defaults write -globalDomain NSUserKeyEquivalents -dict-add 'Save As...' '@$S'
view rawdwrite-global-saveas.sh hosted with ❤ by GitHub
    That's it!
Launch TextEdit and open the 'File' menu and you should see "Save As..." back in its rightful spot with its original Command + Shift + S shortcut, as shown in the image above.
Aside: After you enter the 'defaults write' command, you will not see any confirmation that it was entered correctly. Terminal.app is a little terse sometimes. If you want to verify it from the command-line, enter this:
    defaults read -globalDomain NSUserKeyEquivalents
and look for "Save As..." = "@$s"; in the output.
Option 2. System Preferences.app If you would rather not use Terminal, it's still very easy to add the keyboard shortcut.
Launch the System Preferences.app, then open the "Keyboard" preference pane.
At the top you will see "Keyboard" and "Keyboard Shortcuts" – click "Keyboard Shortcuts" (labeled '1' below). Then in the list on the left side, click "Application Shortcuts" (labeled '2' below). Then click the "+" button (labeled '3' below):
Once you press that "+" button, a small window will appear asking you to enter the title of the menu item and the keyboard shortcut that you want to use.
Enter "Save As..." in the "Menu Title:" field, and then press the keyboard shortcut that you want to use. In the example below I pressed Command + Shift + S:
Note: It used to be true that you had to enter an actual ellipsis (which you can get by pressing Option+ ; on a US-English keyboard). However, when I tested this in Mac OS X 10.8.2, it worked with three consecutive periods.
Bonus Tip: Hide the "Duplicate" menu item.
In my original article I suggested that you also enter a keyboard shortcut for "Duplicate" and while youcan do that if you wish, you do not need to do that.
However, if you would like to hide the Duplicate menu item, you can do that. There are two steps: first, remap "Save As..." to Command + Shift + S (as shown above). Then the 'trick' is to remap "Duplicate" to Command + Shift + Option + S.
What you will have done is swap the keyboard shortcuts for "Duplicate" and "Save As..." which means that OS X will make "Duplicate" the optional command. If you open the "File" menu and hold down "Option" the "Save As..." command will change to "Duplicate"
(Thanks to TUAW reader 'rbascuas' for pointing this out in response to the original article!)
Important Addendum: "Keep changes in original document"
As we reported in August 2012, the "Save As..." command in early versions of 10.8 had an unexpected and likely unwanted side effect in Mountain Lion: it would save the changes in the new document (created by "Save As...") but would also save the changes to the original document.
However, Apple realized that users might not want that behavior, so in Mac OS X 10.8.2 they added an option "Keep changes in original document" which you can see here:
Option A: If you want to save the changes you've made in the document and then save the document with a different name, then make sure that the box is checked.
Option B: If you want your original document to stay as it was when you last saved it and create a new document based on the modified content of that document, then make sure that box is not checked.
If you do not see the 'Keep changes in original document' box, then the application is probablygoing to give you the "Option B" behavior, but if you are not sure, I would suggest choosing Cancel in the "Save" dialog, then copy and paste the contents of the document into a new file, and save the new file. I know that's several extra-and-less-convenient steps, but if you are worried about preserving the original document, better safe than sorry.
You could also save the file, duplicate it in Finder, and rename the new instance. Open old file and revert to previous save using 'Versions'.
Frankly,I wish that Apple had just left the "Save As..." command alone, but for some reason they didn't ask my opinion. That said, I'm glad that they brought it back in Mountain Lion. I would have paid $20 for that feature alone.
Note: This article was re-written and republished on 2013–02–21. The original process still works, but I wanted to update it to reflect some additional information.

  • Drop down menus on iPad, the first selection in the drop down will not load as a selection when using safari, what can I do?

Drop down menus on iPad, the first selection in the drop down will not load as a selection when using safari, what can I do?  I use this for my mobile, on-site auto repair business and not being able to call up repair and diagnostic info and reference for some cars is troublesome for sure. It works fine on the computer and I have installed a remote desktop app as a workaround but it is unreliable because the desktop is not business dedicated and may be off or in use at the time. So is there a known fix for this?
Let me paint a more descriptive picture, visualize 4 drop down selection menus, first one is for year, next one is for make, 3rd one is model and the last one is for engine size/type. If I wanted to choose a 2012 vehicle it wont work because it is the top selection on the list. This can be forced by selecting any other year and then coming back to 2012. Ok fine, but then let's say I wanted to choose Acura as the make, well it won't take it because again it's the top selection. Again you work around it be selecting any other make and coming back to Acura. Ok now select the model, same trend follows. But now since most Acura vehicles come with dedicated engines and no optional engines I have only 1 selection in that final drop down menu and it will not take my selection and therefore never let me proceed to the info I need.
This is also true when ordering parts from my wholesaler's website, they use drop downs and I can only get to that last drop down and then I'm stuck. This is blindingly frustrating, what options do I have. I'm not opposed to any avenue at this point.

Did you ever figure this out? I bought my iPad last week to use in my business as well. I assume you are trying to use alldata? That is where I noticed this same issue. I had problems with identifix working with safari but downloaded a different browser and that works fine. Alldata does not work with either browser. The main difference is that on identifix if there is only one engine selection, it automatically selects the only option and continues to the home page. With alldata you have to make the selection manually even if there is only one option. Honestly if I can't get this to work I am going to return the iPad as it looses a significant amount of usefulness to men

  • IMac freezing on drop down menus

Hey all, odd behavior from my generally-solid iMac. It's a 2007 aluminum and still chugging along nicely, only it's started behaving oddly over say the past week.
On 3 occassions, drop down menus have siezed it completely, forcing a hard restart:
    • Once when control-clicking a file on the desktop to try to select "move to trash."
    • Once (today actually) in an email message when clicking the attachment icon (froze as the finder/select menu started to come down)
    • Once when control-clicking a file for "open with"
I've run repair disk. There were issues there, but completed the repair. Not sure what's causing this or how to alleviate it. It is odd that it's happened 3 times in a week having never exhibited this problem before. Any ideas for why, or better, a solution? Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem but within the Adobe Suite CS6. Everything works fine except for the small drop-down panel menus - no problems with menus in any other programs.
Like Cory mentioned, perhaps there is a .plist or something we need to trash - any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Buttons - making a drop down menu

    Hello,
I only know very basic flash. Right now, I am attempting to revamp a website. The buttons that are currently being used are only gifs that are hyperlinked and there are almost 12 buttons... I think that this is a ridiculous amount of buttons to have. It looks very cluttered.
So, I figured I should make 6 buttons and just fit the rest of the buttons into subcategorized buttons. And the way to do this is to create flash buttons with drop down menus. To see what I mean, go to this link and look at their buttons:
    http://ca.msn.com/
Their buttons drop down into menus with sub-categories. I want to do this.
So far, I have gone into flash, created buttons and made graphics for the "Up" "Over" "Down" and "Hit". I have also added the menu buttons and graphics for the "Over" of each drop-down button-menu.
I have even provided the action script to link each button to where I need it to go.
HOWEVER, here is where the problem is. When I roll the mouse over the button, and then move the mouse down to click on one of the buttons in the drop down menu, the menu disappears, OF COURSE, because the mouse goes off the hit. I can't make the hit bigger, because the menu shouldn't open unless it's on the main button. But without the hit being bigger, the menu will always disappear.
IN ADDITION, I've never used flash buttons on a website before. I'm just using HTML. How do I link the button to the page? Do I save the file as a .swf flash file? And link to 6 different files? Or do I save the buttons in a line, and just use one link?
I'm on a bit of a deadline so any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    -Michelle

While I can't help you with your deadline, I can offer a little bit of input.  To take a Flash approach you should find a Flash drop down menu tutorial thru Google and follow thru that to gain an understanding of how to construct one.  The problem you are having with the rollover stems from needing to extend the rollover such that each element of the dropdown also carries that rollover command.  Each button needs to be assigned code to process interacting with it and linking to some other web page.  The swf file that you publish would need to be sized for holding the buttons and then must be placed on the web page.
The example you pointed to uses a CSS drop down menu, which you will likely find easier to create and manage if you have no familiarity with how to make Flash work in a web site.  I suggest going to the Dreamweaver forum and looking there for information about that approach.

    OS X keyboard shortcuts
One of the best things about Mac OS X is that it is very approachable for the casual user and is consistent across Applications.
A casual user does not need to know keyboard Shortcuts, but can look in Menus to find all the options and choose the one that seems best. Once you are close to becoming an expert, or find the mouse is slowing you down, committing a few of these to memory and using the keyboard can speed up your work substantially.
