Keyboard shortcuts to assign star ratings

Is there a way to specify hot-keys for assigning star ratings to the currently playing track? For example in system preferences would there be a way to hit [cmd]+1 for one star, [cmd]+2 for two stars, etc? I know there are some apps for doing this in the menu bar as well - any specific recommendations on simple, clean and effective ones?
Thanks!

I always like Synergy. I don't know if it does or will work with Leopard. I've had it for a long time but haven't used it in a while so I haven't kept up with it. However, it didn't generally cause any problems and did the job.

  • Why doesn't the "Command Number" keyboard shortcut apply the colored label to the selected image?

Why doesn't the "Command Number" keyboard shortcut apply the colored label to the selected image?  The similar keyboard shortcut to assign stars works, but the shortcut to assign a label color doesn't?

Just to be sure they haven;t been reassigned in your Aperture go to Aperture->Commands->Customize then in the search box in the upper right hand corner enter color.
You should see the keyboard shortcuts and the corresponding add label commands.
If they are set then quit Aperture move you preference file to the desktop and restart Aperture. The instructions for moving the preference file can be found at Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics

  • Can I create a keyboard shortcut for changing text colors in Mail?

When composing an email in Mail (v5.2), I often have the need to change the text of a few words to red to highlight them (e.g. names of people assigned to an action item) but want to do it via keyboard shortcut.  I know I can do the following:
Press Command-Shift-C brings up to Colors panel
Choose the color (e.g. Red) with my mouse
    Type the text
Choose the color (e.g. back to Black) with my mouse
    Continue typing text
And that's if I want the color panel to stay visible (add at least 3 more steps all together if I close it in the interim).
I've tried using keyboard shortcuts to assign a color (couldn't find the right menu path) and Automator to create a script (the color panel always has to be in the right location which it may not be). None of those techniques work.
It's an annoyance more than anything else but I imagine it should be possible.
    Thanks for any assistance!
    John

Not only is this very possible, it's also very easy. You can do this not just for Quark but for any application in OS X. To accomplish what you want, do the following:
    * Firstly, quit QuarkXPress completely. The rest of the steps won't work if it is still running.
    * Go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences.
    * Click the Keyboard & Mouse System Preference Pane
    * Click Keyboard Shortcuts
    * Click the + button to add a new shortcut.
    * Select QuarkXPress as the application.
    * In the Menu Title field type "Place Name" exactly like that but without the quotes.
    * Click inside the Shortcut field and type the key combination you want to use for this shortcut. I suggest using Command + one of the F keys, like Command+F1.
    * Click Add.
    * Close System Preferences
    * Run Quark, open a document, and try it out!

  • Keyboard shortcut for services not working

I'm using a service called Quickfiles (it lets me create a new file in the selected folder without having to open the corresponding app first). The service works great when accessed through the services menu, and I have gone into my keyboard preferences (keyboard shortcuts) and assigned a keyboard shortcut to the service (command-control-N) but nothing happens when I use the shortcut. I have tried making a couple alternative shortcuts for that service but nothing ever happens when I hit the key combo, even though the service always works perfectly when accessed from the services menu. Any ideas?

Yes, testing with a "test" account is always a good idea.
(First look shows that it's related to problems associating Documents with Applications, which this isn't).
I wouldn't be too certain on that stance, Menu items associate with something to do their work!

  • 1.1: No more star ratings on thumbnails?

    Hello all,
As most of you did, I upgraded Aperture to 1.1. I'm now having a very annoying problem that I was hoping someone may be able to give some insight into.
When I'm going through the images (either fullscreen or windowed), when I would assign star-ratings or keywords, a little star icon and a "keyword" icon would show up on the thumbnail. Now, however, those icons do not show up, and I have no idea if I've rated the picture (or, for that matter, what I rated it). Is this a bug? A feature of 1.1? A problem with my Aperture 1.1.
I checked preferences, but that did not have anything to indicate that this is a feature that needs (re-)enabling.
I welcome any thoughts. Thanks in advance!
    Doug

Hi Doug - check your view options: Cmd-J, or View menu>View Options...
In the options pane, is the heading "Grid View" selected/checked?

  • PrEl 9. Do star ratings affect Instant movie results?

    Hi everybody.
Do the star ratings that you assign to your videos in the Elements Organizer have any weigh or effect on the clips that are chosen by Adobe when you do an Instant Movie project?
I fist did a (rather typical) zoo movie, where the elefant turned out to be the main subject of the instant movie rather than my family. I guess the elefant clip was better iluminated, steady, etc and had the right smart tags so that it was shown a lot of times.
In another project for one of my kid's birthday I assigned star ratings to the clips that I liked before I ran the auto analyzer and created an instant movie. In the end I had more of the clips I liked in my instant movie.
I don't know if this was mere coincidence or if star rating had anything to do with it. I couldn't find any reference to star ratings in the premiere elements help where it talks about instant movie projects.
What has been your experience on this?
    Thanks,
    Asdrubal.

    Thank you Steve.
I know the star rating doesn't affect the clips, I just wondered if they had any effect on the Instant Movie algorithms.
Like you say they must be only for personal reference, as there is no mention of them in the instant movie help files.

  • Extra keypad to make keyboard shortcuts easier?   Shuttle Pro v.2?

    Hi all,
I like the white keyboard that came with my Mac Pro except for the fact the F keys are all squished together. I like how PC keyboards group the F keys in groups of 4. Even with the F keys grouped are not that easy for me to use. I also have a Logitech Internet Navigator keyboard that has media keys along the top. I am visually impaired so I do touch typing and don't look at the keyboard. In fact, I keep the keyboard tray recessed under the desk while I am typing. I am currently using the Mac Pro keyboard with my Mac Pro. I haven't tried using the Logitech keyboard with the Mac Pro.
I'm trying to make it easier to access shortcut keys. I don't really like redefining keyboard keystrokes because I don't know if I am overriding an existing keyboard shutcut. So, a better keyboard shortcut manager would be nice that showed me applications use which shortcut keys. Does such software exist for the mac? Could such programs learn the shortcuts used by newly installed applications?
Also, I think it would be handy to have an external keypad that I can assign shortcuts to. I would want some shortcuts to be global and some to be local to certain apps. Also, I want to be able to use the main keyboard's modifier keys. At least one jog wheel would be nice too. The Shuttle Pro V.2 looks like a possibility but I can find very many articles about it for general use. Most of the articles refer to it being used with pro apps. Anyone care to share their experience with this?
BTW, I use a Logitech TrackMan Marble+ trackball instead of the Mighty Mouse.
I'd appreciate any other suggestions such as keyboards or extra keypads.
    Thanks!
    Steven

I would expect one to be able to add a shortcut to this specific command in FCP X's command editor, but like you I can't seem to find it there.
    I can offer two suggestions:
    1) If you use Save Current Frame more than any other export option, you can easily attach to it the default Cmd-E.
Open Preferences->Destinations, control-click on "Save Current Frame" in the left pane and choose "make default".
    2) You can use the system keyboard shortcuts to assign an appropriate shortcut to "Save Current Frame...".
Open System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts. Click on "App Shortcuts", then click the "+" button to add a new one. Select Final Cut Pro as the application, enter the text of the menu command *exactly* - "Save Current Frame..." without the quotes - then click the box for the shortcut and enter the desired one. I tested this with Cmd-Control-Option-Shift S and it worked immediately (not even needed to quit FCP X).

  • Spaces doesn't recognize keyboard shortcuts!!

    hey everyone.
I had my spaces setup to use F11 keyboard shortcut and dashboard is F12.
then yesterday.. spaces just stoped working.. dashboard still works. i have
disabled and enabled spaces again.. switched to F12.. still nothing. has anyone
had a similar problem that got figured out? dashboard works with F11 so it's
not a dead key.. I'm going to restart now..
    rob

I have a similar problem on my PPC G5 only, my MBP (intel) works fine.
None of my F8 - F12 keys work, spaces is enabled, all keyboard shortcuts are assigned. I was on the phone to apple for a while working with a slightly confused (the reason may become apparent) tech who eventually solved my problem by resetting the PRAM, although, this only worked for about 2 hours.
The only thing we found was that in my preferences for keyboard shortcuts for expose, dashboard and spaces i have two options that i can set. One is for example F8, the other I can select any mouse button from Secondary through to Button 34. Which he didn't have on his computer. He could only select the F8 option...
Although i have discovered that the mouse options come from having a logitech wireless mouse (either MX revolution to the PPC or the Nano to my MBP..although the MBP keyboard short cuts still work).
So in summary, my keyboard shortcuts don't work on ONLY my PPC..rather annoying.

  • Assigning a new keyboard shortcut that isn't default

In CS4, I'd like to to assign a keyboard shortcut to the
"Smooth" tool (which comes up when you click pointer.) How can I do
this? When I click on Tools Panel in the Keyboard Shortcut menu, it
isn't an option and it also isn't listed in the Customize Tools
menu. I figuring, if I replace one of the available tools with the
smooth tool (again, not the one associated with pencil, but the one
that appears when you click pointer), I can do it. But how can I
replace or add to the available tools?
    I'm using a mac, tiger 10.11.4
    Thanks

Sorry for such a slow response.  I've been up to my eyeballs in work recently! (not a bad thing).  Thanks Ronin for your help.  I did have a look at that link and there is some useful stuff there.
As it turns out I solved the problem another way.  All I had to do was clear my synced settings and then re-sync!! can you believe that!  Now when I select keyboard shortcuts from the menu the window pops up and I can customize away.  Before, nothing happened when I selected keyboard shortcuts from the drop down menu!
Maybe it's a weird solo bug that only happened to me, I hope no one else suffers this infuriating thing!
    Cheers

  • Assign keyboard shortcut to applescript

I have setup custom keyboard shortcuts before (Finder > Secure Empty Trash) but I can't seem to get a shortcut setup for an applescript in the applescript menu. The appropriate shortcut is displayed in the menu but when I press the shortcut the script isn't invoked. Has anyone been able to get this setup for an applescript? Any ideas on what could be wrong?
    -brad
MacBook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You get a copy of FastScripts from Red Sweater software. (last I checked, App store doesn't carry it)
It'll let you assign keyboard shortcuts to scripts or Apps through i's Preferences Menu item,
There are other Apps, such as Quicksilver, that'll allow similar assignments.
Apple's own 'Script Menu' does not allow them.
FastScripts is what I use. It's cheap, or free, and gets the job done.

  • Script works in Word 2008 but can't assign keyboard shortcut

Since I must have emacs keystrokes on those fortunately rare occasions when I have to use Word 2008, and because there is no explicit "delete character" command in Word (since there's already a built in keystroke for it, presumably) I've written a simple script that activates the delete key:
    tell application "System Events"
tell application "Microsoft Word" to activate
    key code 117
    end tell
I have put this in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Word Script Menu Items so that it shows up in the script menu in Word. If I select the script from the menu via the mouse, it works just fine and deletes the character to the right of the cursor. However, if I try to assign a Word-specific keyboard shortcut (the usual emacs keystroke Ctrl-d, of course) using the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane to this macro it simply doesn't work. "^D" shows up next to the name of the script in the Word script menu, so the shortcut appears to be registering, and the little script menubar icon even flashes blue when I hit Ctrl-d, but nothing happens; the script just does not seem to run.
Any help appreciated. I really need to have this keystroke to be able to use Word and remain reasonably happy about it.

Follow up: My Word-specific shortcut seems to work the *first time* I use it after bringing up a document. Thereafter it fails. Thanks.

  • Keyboard shortcut for star shape does not work - arrow keys

I need to use the star shape to make a sort of badge with many points.
In the past, I've used the star shape and held up arrow or down arrow to change the number of points on the star. This no longer works for me in Adobe Illustrator CS4 (on a Windows Vista). Did this shortcut change? All my other keyboard shortcuts work. I tried resetting the preference file for Illustrator just in case, but it didn't fix it.

I have found a work-around for this problem, although it's a bit annoying.
I have a Wacom Bamboo tablet and encountered the same problem with establishing the number of points on a star. I tried everything and noticed it worked sometimes. Well, turns out that it will work only once after changing the settings for your pen.  I just moved the tip feel setting leaving the pen tablet properties window open, went to illustrator and the arrow keys worked. If you try drawing the shape again, it won't work. You have to go back to the pen tablet properties window and move or change something, go back to illustrator and it works again. It's a little annoying, but if you're used to using the arrow keys to create shapes, it's handy to know it's there.

  • Can star ratings assigned in Photoshop Elements 11 be viewed in Bridge? [was:Noreen needs help]

Can star ratings assigned in Photo Shop Elements 11 be seen when viewed in Bridge or visa versa, if assigned in Bridge, will they show up in Elements? If so, how is it done?

Addressing your second question, you are confusing two different things.
tiff is an image file format, as is jpeg, as is psd, as is png, as are dozens (if not hundreds, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_file_formats) of other formats.
A colour profile represents the colour characteristics of devices so that, for example, displays know how to display the colours, printers know how to print them.
Image files MAY, but do not have to, contain colour profiles.

  • Is it possible to assign a keyboard shortcut to a Master Slide?

    Hello,
I have been looking into an approach for assigning a keyboard shortcut to the application of a master slide ("Bullets" for example). I tried the keyboard shortcut assignment in System Preferences, but that did not work. I did a quick Google search to see if Master slides can get applied via apple script and then maybe assign a keyboard shortcut to execute the apple script, but that was not too fruitful.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I too have gone through the Premiere Elements 13 keyboard shortcut and cannot find what you seek for the command Applied Effect and a corresponding keyboard shortcut.
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2014/10/pe-13-keyboard-shortcuts.html
Until proven other, I do not believe what you seek is possible in Premiere Elements with the Project Assets/Edit area monitor/Applied Effect Tab/Applied Effects Palette.
However, there is a possibility for command = Project Assets and a keyboard shortcut to be assigned. Would that work for you? If so, please see Edit Menu/Keyboard Customization/Application/Window and its Project Assets command awaiting a keyboard shortcut.
    Have you considered...
    a. dual monitor system
    b. shrinking Project Assets
Please review and consider and then we can discuss this further if you want.
    Thank you.

  • Assigning keyboard shortcuts to volume controls

Hi, I have a new MacBook, with the default that F4 brings up Dashboard. I don't like Dashboard, and would rather have F4 show the desktop, next to F3, which shows all windows as the default. Moreover, I'd like to reclaim F7, F8, and F9, which are taken over by audio/video play controls. So I thought I'd tick the box under Keyboard preferences to use F1 etc. keys as standard function keys. Under the Keyboard shortcuts preference pane, I can assign F1 and F2 to brightness controls, F3 to show all windows, and F4 to show desktop. So far so good.
BUT, I can't figure out how to assign my volume controls to F keys. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ken
