Keyboard skin & cooling

does a silicon keyboard skin interfere with cooling?
And, what is the path that the cooling air takes, where is the intake and exhaust?
I've been monitoring the temp w/ iStat lately, <90F. But what is an acceptable temp anyway?

Do cases that stay attached to the exterior interfere with cooling ie: silicone, neoprene or hardcases
TIA

There is nothing newer than the July 2011 model. The model released in July 2011 is the current model.

  • IBook keyboard skins?

    Hi,
Does anybody know where I can buy a keyboard skin for an 12" iBook G4?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Most online sources I've just checked (about 20 min via search) appear to say they no longer stock them; yet there are a few with conflicting information, in part perhaps due to how they are listed. An example of a conflict exists in the instance of a link via a yahoo search (I don't usually rely on them) that says I could get an iBook/PowerBook keyboard cover at 'welovemacs.com' yet if I go direct to their own site, they say they don't have them. But I see one here...
This page says they do. The company has an 800# so maybe you could call and ask: http://www.welovemacs.com/xibpbwhtblk.html Some of the resellers online that offer older repaired Macs and parts may have old-stock new from that time frame; ones that specialize in portable Mac repair & parts may be a source.
Back when my iBook G4 12" 1.33GHz mid-2005 model was new, I bought a silicone keyboard protector, a nice soft neo RadTech case that stays on the Book when it is open or closed, a 1G RAM upgrade, and AppleCare. I still have that, it is still in fine shape, but seldom turn it on and it needs a replacement battery to be run very long. The two Apple batteries were hardly used at all (were warranty replacements) and super low cycle counts. If I had money to burn, I'd get a SSD installed and a new cell from OWC. An iBook is hardly worth it, though. I have a few G4 Macs and one first-edition MacBook coreduo... And losing interest in most electronic products... including smartphones, tablets, smart watches, RFID implants, drones...!
You may be able to find a failed computer with the protector included on craigslist or maybe in a pawn shop, etc. Most times the computer may be hardly worth the asking price.
    Good luck & happy computing!

Hi, could anyone please suggest me a good Logic keyboard skin for MacBook Pro Early 2008 (the latest model before unibody).

  • Keyboard skin for iMac keyboard with 'L' shaped Return keys -do they exist?

Hi people. Can someone PLEASE tell me where I can find a silicon cover for my European G5 iMac's keyboard. It has a large 'L' shaped Return key and all of the places I've tried (zcover etc) only stock skins for keyboards with thin, American stle Return keys.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I use this cover, the iSkin. The area that covers the return key and the key above is molded L-shaped. It will accommodate a US or Int'l Apple keyboard.

The CSA keyboard layout is not one I'm familiar with (and at 61 yrs old, I don't really want to learn how to type again ) How can that be converted to a .keylayout ?
I would probably use Ukelele to modify the CSA version:

What in CSA needs to be changed? I've done lots of these and could probably make what you need without much work.

  • X250 Keyboard Skin: How to similar to other keyboards?

    Hello all,
I'm just after purchasing my first Lenovo, the ThinkPad x250. I'd really like ot get a keyboard cover for it, and I haven't seen too many options while browsing around.
In the perfect world, the cover would be red, as that's my favourite colour.
I've noticed that the ones that do say they fit the x250 also claim to fit the x230, x240 and some of the Yogas.
Can anyone verify or refute this?
Is the x250 keyboard the same as these and will a keyboard cover fit all?
Or, can anyone recommend a good keyboard cover?
    Thanks!

    Hi Japib
    Alternative solution with an iPad?
Do you know if it's possible to connect (by USB or BLUETOOTH?) 2 keyboards to an iPad, running "MainStage" application
Becose during a live performance :
    - multitouch control is much more comfortable than a mouse
    - it's easy to place the iPad on the keyboard
I understand that an iPad can be used as an instrument or as a multitrack recorder, but professional musicians say that physical connectors (câbles) are better than bluetooth ones
    Thank you again and best:)

  • Is there an alternative to the black unibody keyboard?

I'm just about to try to swap my faulty unibody Macbook Pro and I'm wondering if there's any official or third-party alternative to the existing keys.
The machine I currently have needs a new screen (bad light bleed, blue staggered tint across the bottom, and dust under the glass), new logic board (black screen of death and very high temperatures), new DVD drive (fails to recognize any brand or type of blank DVD media), and a new keyboard (the Fn and left alt keys are both loose and pop off frequently). All-told, it's been something of a poor first experience with Apple quality control, but the support staff are understanding and helpful.
Well, at least over the phone ... the hard drive failed and required a complete reinstall in-store and the genius staff didn't exactly live up to their name, leaving me to troubleshoot and save what little data I could in target disk mode from a display model.
In the two months I've had this computer the black keys have worn out very fast. The keys appear greasy, but after repeated cleanings it's clear that the protective coating on the black paint has worn off, making a section of the spacebar and several frequently-used keys "shiny."
Thanks to those two keys that like to pop off frequently, I know that the new keys are simply frosted white plastic that's been painted black on one side. Eventually, with the coating now gone, the black paint will wear off as well.
Unless Apple switches to a different coating, which I doubt they'll do any time soon, I expect the same wear problem to manifest on whichever replacement Macbook Pro is sent back to me.
So I've been looking for replacement keys. Does anyone know if the white Macbook keyboard would fit into a Macbook Pro chassis? I've used the white models before and though they can eventually yellow, the keys tend to hide their wear much better than the black ones have. I'm going to ask the authorized repair shop in San Francisco about the possibility, but I doubt they'll do the swap under warrantee.
Or is there a third-party company that produces a more rugged key than the ones that Apple uses? Thinking a textured grey one or something. The current keys feel very plastic and cheap, much less comfortable than the older silver keys on the many Powerbooks and Macbook Pros I've been given for work.
Just curious. These models are still fairly new and it will probably take some time for third-parties to offer alternatives, but I'd love to hear if someone's found a company stepping up with plans for a solution to the problem. Or even if there's one that offers pre-cut plastic stickers to protect the keys from such early wear.

Hi, nbuubu. I'm using a clear silicone keyboard "skin" on my new MBP. I don't like the way it looks, and the feel of it takes some getting used to. But it's certainly protecting my keycaps, and no crud is getting into the computer through the crevices around them.
Actually, I'm not sure how much of the getting-used-to is necessitated by the "skin" and how much of it is because of the keycaps' very flat surfaces, compared to any other KB I've ever used. I'm accustomed to "dished" keycaps that help keep my fingertips properly positioned. I guess it's possible that there just isn't room for 3D keycap surfaces in the thickness of the MBP. And as I say, I'm getting used to these.

  • Do i need the plastic cover for my keyboard?

Just wondering about how necessary it is to get one of those plastic/rubber keyboard covers for my macbook pro... I kind of like the way it types without it, so wondering on how much I really need it... does it really protect from dust, etc. that much? I dont really eat or drink around my comp so I'm not really concerned about spills... does apple recommend it?

OP wrote:I dont really eat or drink around my comp so I'm not really concerned about spills...
Then I would not get one. They hinder cooling, because air is drawn in through keyboard to cool unit.

Hi, Peter. There is nothing wrong with posting links here to products or sites, including commercial sites, that might solve another poster's problem or answer his or her question. Hundreds of such links are posted in Apple Discussions every day. I probably post five or ten a day myself. In the present case, you can certainly post a link to the Moshi keyboard skin if you wish.
It is not permissible to post a link to your own web site or to a product or vendor if the link doesn't have any direct bearing on a previous poster's question or add pertinent information to the ensuing discussion. And if you will receive any kind of compensation as a result of others visiting a site you've linked, you must disclose that.

  • How are you keeping your Apple keyboards clean in student labs?

I might be able to manage the software with ARD - but how do you clean out the keyboards? It's like they were built as dirt collectors.
And - Can ARD be used to admin. Macs on different vlans within a Win 2000 & 2003 server env.? Any tips, tricks re: this?
    Thanks!

I might be able to manage the software with ARD - but how do you clean out the keyboards? It's like they were built as dirt collectors.
It's pretty much impossible to keep computer lab keyboards clean unless you use a keyboard skin. Otherwise, you just have to wipe them down and blow them out every now and then and hope for the best.
Can ARD be used to admin. Macs on different vlans within a Win 2000 & 2003 server env.?
Yes. No special "tricks" are necessary; just set the ARD scanner to scan the appropriate range in the VLAN so you can see and add the computers and it should work without problems (we have multiple VLANs here and ARD works just fine).

  • Dv7 / Dv6 keyboard layout and accessories

Hello, I have a new dv7-6c95dx and I am having the hardest time finding accessories for it. I was wondering if you could tell me if the Dv7 and the Dv6 have the same keyboard layout. I can't seem to find a keyboard cover for my Dv7 however, I have found several for the Dv6. I just wanted to know if the keyboards were the same before i made the purchase. Also, if you advise against purchasing the Dv6 cover for my Dv7, could you possibly tell me where I could go to find a cover suitable for my Dv7? Thanks

    dv6 keyboard part nos:

    dv7 part nos
    519004-001  519265-001
Not the same. Does yours have an enbedded numeric keypad to the right of the main keyboard? All dv7s have the numeric keypad but the pictures I am seeing of the dv6 are mixed. The pictures I am seeing of dv6 keyboards with numeric keypad show the same key layout as the dv7 keyboard so I would say that if the dv6 keyboard cover has a numeric keypad area you are likely OK, but these things have to be an identical fit. I am not seeing a cover for your model on ebay. You might contactt his seller:
