Keyboard Stops/starts/sticks

Have had my macbook since Dec. 22. From the beginning, there have been issues with the keyboard not working at all, a key "locking in" and typing the same character for an eternity, the delete button getting stuck and deleting all messages in my e-mail inbox, etc. When it does not respond to typing, I have to close it and open it several times, or, shut down and restart. It is getting SO ANNOYING. I haven't called for support, as I thought perhaps I was just new to the macbook, and may be hitting some shortcut key by mistake.
I am very computer savvy, and started with Macs early on, with a Classic, then an early powerbook, and so on. I switched to PC in early 2000 due to work, and hadn't been on a Mac for a long, long time. I was ready for a switch, but this is such an annoying issue that I am starting to question my decision. It is incredibly frustrating and really cuts into productivity.
Anyone else have this issue?

Nice help here. Going back to Microsoft Office because it works better, which is incredibly sad. Shame on you apple. I spent a long time looking through old posts and nothing there worked. This update screwed me up.  The new iPhone udate messed up my email and replaced Google maps with an unfininshed product. Beta test? You are starting to **** me off. I see no reason to ever update any more of your products. Why bother? They make things worse and you can't be bothered to fix it, tell users what they might do, or apparently even test anything.

My remote iPad  keyboard stopped working

    Any update?
Apple Support always say reboot your computer, unplug the keyboard, the keys are broken, ... But I bought 2 of these keyboards and they have the same frustrating problem. When you unplug them and plug them back they STOP working sometimes for long time or sometimes you have to hit the keys for a while to get the keyboard back.
Since about a year I just let my mb air powered on with my keyboard because I need my keyboard to work. (and it's hugely frustrating to start your day trying to get your keyboard working)
I just bough a mb pro late 2013 and the keyboard do not work at all.
    All the best,
    Sam

  • Help! Keyboard stops responding and then works after reboot

My computer will start running really slowly and then the keyboard stops working, then after 30 seconds or so I lose the ability to click but the mouse still moves. Command-option-esc for force quit still works some of the time though but refreshing everything from there doesn't help. After I reboot everything goes back to normal. This has happened every other day or so for about a week. Help me please!

See if you get this behavior using another account.
See what happens when you safe boot.

  • Swing app keyboard stops working, mystery ESCAPE keystrokes appear in EDT

Java 6 Swing app. In our development environment, works great. In QA, they use it for a bit, type in a text field, click out to a Windows XP/7 app, click back in the text field, and the keyboard stops accepting keystrokes. The mouse continues to work, and the Swing app continues to paint to the screen.
I hooked up a KeyEventDispatcher to listen to what is going on. I'll post a more verbose log at the end of this post, but the short version is this. When the keyboard hangs, the log shows that 'escape' keys are being sent, though we do not do any keystroke injection in our app, ESCAPE or otherwise. Nothing on the Swing app can be determined visually to have focus.
Just before the app starts hanging, it has a side effect of not being able to be brought into the foreground by clicking on it, if, for example, one was working with Excel or Notepad, then try to click on the JFrame title of the app, or anywhere else on the app frame/internals. Once this condition happens, moving away to another Windows app, then going back to the Swing app, causes the keyboard to stop working and the KeyEventDispatcher to see 'escape' keystrokes being sent out.
Connecting remotely to the app via JVisualVM/JConsole does not show any of the threads hanging/blocked.
Sometimes you can work for hours before seeing this problem, and other times, you can start the app up and it happens right away. Once it happens, sometimes you can't recover, and sometimes you can click on a button on a navigator panel on the left side that displays an info panel on the right side, and you can start typing again in text fields.
Once this problem happens, you can start (or have already running) a completely different Swing app (ex.: StackTrace), and the keyboard will stop working for that app too, even though its running in its own separate VM.
This problem (ALMOST!) always happen when typing in a Swing text field (JTextField, JTextArea, etc.), clicking on and then typing in a Windows text area (Excel cell, Notepad), then clicking back into the Swing app's text field. A few times, we've gotten this to happen by typing in a text field, tabbing to a button, pressing a button, then tabbing/clicking back into the text field, all without leaving the Swing app. But this latter scenario is rare, usually going to/from Swing/Windows XP/7 apps cause the problem to occur more readily.
The QA computers normally use Citrix to connect and run the app, but this also happens if we run the app completely locally. But again, this only happens to some computers, all of the ones in the QA department; the development computers (the app has not been released into production yet) does not see this problem.
I had thought that our problem was this problem (Wrong characters in KeyEvents generated from input of barcode scanner but purposely slowing down the acceptance of KEY_PRESSED and KEY_RELEASED events before allowing them to go on to the Swing app (via a KeyDispatcher) did not solve the problem.
Also, we had thought it might be a Citrix problem and how it (or does it?) hook into the Windows keyboard. The fact that once one Swing app gets into this keyboard doesn't work and escape keys are being sent out by the EDT can affect another Swing app makes me wonder. We're not seeing any VM exceptions either like this (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION - JRE 6.0_23 - Citrix, windows 2003
Been trying to get this one solved for over a week, but with no luck. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

<discaimer>Don't put too much hope in my reply</disclaimer>
The only real difference is QA has the Citrix client installed on them, and development does not. You don't need to run our Swing app through a Citrix client though to cause the bug/freezing, just running it on a PC with the Citrix client seems to be enough (in theory). We've been working down a checklist of possible problems/solutions, and we've gotten to the "Install Citrix to the dev PC" item now, so I'll post back if that makes a difference or not in reproducing the problem.
I've also had QA people actually come over to a dev PC, without the Citrix client, and try to reproduce the problem, and they have not been able to. There's 'something' about their environment vs. ours, but not sure how that would manifest itself as a AWT/Swing keyboard event of mysterious escape keystrokes followed by the locking up on the keyboard, but not the whole Swing app. My personal guess is the Citirix client installing funky Windows-level keyboard driver(s), but I may be totally off on that. /shrugI read your initial post twice and couldn't find out whether you reproduce that on several different machines, so one "environmental" difference comes to mind: have you tried using another keyboard on the defective QA configuration?
Of course that doesn't explain in itself how the problem would manifest only after switching back and forth to a native Windows app, but then, with the hint that Citrix may make a difference, maybe one driver filters out repeated "Esc" keystrokes, while another doesn't, and that manifests only after a few app switches, and the system event queue, or whatever it's called in Windows, redirects the events to the target app/window?
Other than that, I wish you had investigated Jeanette's pacemaker hypothesis more... ;)
Otherwise, yeah. I have a hook in to see all AWTEvent's, but I still need to see/find what's posting the mysterious escape keys to the event queue.I assume it's what you mean, but I'll try to make that clear: you have to investigate, at the OS level, what is posting escape key events to the OS queue.
I am not a Windows developper, but I seem to understand that the following programs claims to capture keystrokes on the whole screen (not limited to a single window), with some limitations: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/winsdk/WIN_RECORDER.aspx
More generally, you should search for a Windows way to peek at the Windows' (keyboard?) event queue.
I'm not sure this could identify which DLL (if it's not originated by the material, see the defective keyboard hypothesis) is posting the events, but that's worth a try (Java for example, would enables to stuff a custom event queue that would trace info about a Java-poster).
Even if you can't identify the posting DLL, running the "key captuyre" on both the Windows host that has the Citrix window, and the Windows host that you are accessing via Citrix, may give you hints as to where the heck the key strokes originate...
Good luck, and keep us informed,
    J.

My space bar suddenly started sticking, how do i fix it?

I don't recommend tampering with the keyboard or you might make it worse. A friend of mine had this problem so he took it to the genius bar and they replaced the key for free. Do you eat at your computer? That could have caused it too.

  • My keyboard stop working

I own lenovo g505 laptop and my keyboard stop working again the first time I fix it by restarting my laptop but now it has start doing it again and restarting/shutdown not helping any fix? and no I did not spill any liquids on it.

That could be a loose ribbon cable or hardware fault, I assume your laptop is still under warranty, If so you should return your laptop to the place of purchase for replacement or repair.
Edit: Before returning, Backup all your data to external drive using onekey recovery, Power off your laptop, Press onekey recovery (Small button to the right of power button), This will list some options scroll down to recovery & tap return key. This will re-install windows on your laptop, Once installed open wordpad or something smililar & test your keyboard. If your keyboard works after the fresh install restore your backed up files using onekey restore.
    Hope that helps

  • Macbook Pro freezes after attempting sleep mode -trackpad and keyboard stop

I bought this computer on April 2008. It has the latest OS X 10.5.6 and it did not accept the trackpad firmware. I tried to install and the software said "this computer does not need this update".
This has been happening a lot when I am using Skype while talking to someone with video and sound. The computer tries to go on sleep mode because I am not typing or touching it - it thinks I am away because I am just talking and watching the person on the other side.
I have to keep touching the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode. If it attempts to sleep, it freezes and stops the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person on Skype with no problems, and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse"/trackpad cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard. But that interrupts the Skype call and the video and the internet connection. It is a very frustrating interruption.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and my website usability study I am conducting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it go on sleep mode ever, but I forget sometimes when I focused on the study.
I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware. I am also concerned that if I never let it sleep it will shorten the battery's life span.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (beginning of March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.
What can I do to make the trackpad and keyboard stop freezing when the computer tries to sleep?

"...No, I haven't. I am assuming it will take too long, they might not have the answer, and I don't have the time for a long phone call now.
The Apple store in Arlington is always too busy and you I waited over an hour to be helped a few times before."
    1. The phone call will at the very least get you a case number and they can advise you if this is a current issue.
    2. Making an appointment with the genius will at the very least cut down your wait time.

  • Wireless keyboard stops working when some keys adobe photoshop is open and being used.

My apple wireless keyboard stops working some keys when using adobe photoshop. The lestras not work. Stop when I start using the stamp program for example. Is there any solution to this problem. For other macs minis did not have the same problem.

    Hello, what are lestras?

  • Letters on keyboard stopped working

I have an ipod touch and some of the letters on my keyboard stopped responding. Is there a way I can fix this without taking my ipod to an apple store?

I have the same problem. Function keys work, but none of the letters or numbers work, so I can't log in in hte appropriate field. I can move the icon with the mouse, (bluetooth or USB) I've tried 2 keyboards, one USB the other Bluetooth, but I can't get past the log in screen cos the letters & numbers don't respond. I can adjust the brightness using F1 & F2, and I can adjust the volume with F11 & F12.
Luckily I have this MacBook Air!
It started off as a hardware issue where I couldn't even start up. Also I can't get a hardware test to run to completion (you know, switch on whilst pressing D). Strange that the D key works for this!
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Why does my keyboard stop working when I get a new Facebook message?

Whenever I get a new message on Facebook chat, my keyboard stops working on all Firefox tabs. If I switch tabs or close and open the chat it starts working again. It's definitely not a problem with the keyboard, I've had no problems typing in Notepad while messages come in on the chat.

iTunes is not fully functional when operating in Safe Mode, so its possible that the component that supports Audible content is not running.  If iTunes will only run in Safe Mode then there's an issue with your installation - see Turingtest2's tutorial Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates, in particular the section on removing all components of iTunes before installing the latest version.
I have Audible .aa files on a 2nd gen iPod Nano so there shouldn't be an issue with age ...

  • Snow Leopard hangs after LDAP login, mouse works, keyboard stops working

    Afternoon,
It was suggested that I post my question below in a server forum rather than a client form.
    Mike
    Morning,
Earlier I posted a question about 10.5 brightness and 10.6. The user will deal with the brightness issue, so that's moot at the moment. I still have an issue with 10.6 hanging.
I have configured 10.6 to authenticate using OpenLDAP from a Red Hat box. The authentication works fine. I have added /home from the same linux box to the list of NFS mounts (Disk Utility->File->NFS Mounts?, I'm not in front of the mac box at this moment to verify). The /home filesystem does get mounted.
Very quickly after logging into a non-local, LDAP account, the mac box becomes useless in that I cannot start any programs, I can't logout, I can't do anything. If I double click on Terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal) I get the brief flash like Terminal is starting, but the application never appears on the desktop.
I can still ssh into the mac box. When I ssh in and run top, to see what's consuming the CPU, the machine is idle. My guess right now is every application is timing out or failing to start. I see nothing hogging the CPU nor the network.
When I log in using a local, non-LDAP account the mac box acts as I expect it to when launching applications, looking at NFS, surfing the web, etc.
Any ideas what's going on, what to check for, and how to fix this?
This is an iMac 27". I may need to contact Apple support on this one.
    Mike
Additionally, the mouse continues to work, the keyboard stops working (wifi both), and the finder starts reporting -10810 on every application open attempt. I can select the Apple->Logout or Restart options, but nothing happens. I must ssh into the iMac and 'shutdown -r now' to get back to a login so I can login as root to make further changes.
    Mike

I was able to grab a crash log if that helps.
