Keyboard typing icorrect characters

Hi there,
I have a 2005 PowerPC G5 and I'm having an issue with the keyboard. Whenever I type a p it comes onto the screen as an e, ; as a d, and the spacebar doesn't work, along with a few other incorrect keys. It happened suddenly.
Any ideas?

Hi Joe,
Some things to check are your system preference settings under International and Universal Access (sticky keys). See if anything unusual set under those settings. From you description it is difficult to tell if it might be a preference setting problem. System Preferences can be accessed from the blue apple menu or by following the path HD>Applications>System Preferences.
post back with any further questions or comments,

  • Intermittent Keyboard Typing

That's not a good subject description but I have been experiencing a situation in which the keyboard stops entering characters. The cursor keys function but no characters are displayed on the screen even though they are entered on the keyboard. It is an intermittent problem and seems to happen more with Excel and Word. I have tried plugging the keyboard into different USB ports but that doesn't seem to help. This is on a new Mac Mini with OS 10.5.8 and the keyboard is the new Apple aluminum one.
BTW, The Mac mini has 5 USB ports but when I use the System Profiler, it only shows 4 USB ports; 2 USB Bus ports and two USB High-Speed Bus ports. Does it matter which port the keyboard uses? I would think it best to save the High-Speed ports for a printer, etc. and plug the keyboard into one of the other. Could this be a clue to the problem?

I have been living with this intermittent keyboard problem since last fall but recently I have experienced a worse problem where Excel just quits and the Mac does a fast restart (ie, the screen goes blue, then returns to the normal screen with no applications loaded). The spreadsheet I was in comes back as "Recovered". This occurs with the same spreadsheet so perhaps it was corrupted somehow.
What I have done is de-install MS Office 2004 and re-install from the original CDs then do all the updates up to 11.5.5. So far this "crashing" problem has not re-occurred even with the problem spreadsheet.
However, I have still experienced the intermittent typing issue so I'm becoming convinced it it an Apple problem perhaps with Rosetta. Other posts on other Forums (eg., this MS one: www.officeformac.com/ms/ProductForums/Excel/2772/0 ) seem to support that.
SO, I APPEAL TO APPLE AND MICROSOFT TO GET TOGETHER AND SOLVE THIS ISSUE. COOPERATE AND MAKE A LOT OF CUSTOMERS HAPPY.

  • IBook starts typing strange characters

For seemingly no reason my iBook G4 switches over to typing nonsense characters at random times. I'll be midsentence and all of a sudden it types gibberish. Sometimes if I wait a bit it'll go back, but sometimes it lasts hours. Occasionally it switches back and forth, typing some normal letters and some weird characters. This seems to be going along with an issue when I startup of an unusual menu coming up that has a picture of the HD and a Refresh arrow on the left underneath and a right-pointing arrow (--->) on the right.
Obviously not being able to type is a huge problem and I can't seem to find any info on similar problems. Any ideas?

Wow -- this is really weird, and the problem must be relatively common for lots of Tiger users!
The DEFAULT Keyboard shortcuts for BOTH the SPOTLIGHT Window AND to move from one kind of keyboard to another is Command-Option-Space. I had selected three optional keyboards in the INTERNATIONAL LIST because I sometimes type Spanish or Portuguese documents.
Sometimes (who knows when) when I thought I was summoning SPOTLIGHT window, I was shifting to another keyboard configuration.
For the time being, I have disabled the keyboard shortcut (which you can get to from either the Keyboard or the International panes of the System Preferences. But I'm wondering now how to change the key assignment for the OS shortcuts (I know how to do it inside some appllications, of course, but not how to CHANGE OS-level shortcuts.
Anyway, thanks Neil for solving the big problem.

  • Wireless keyboard typing gibberish

Some keys ok, some typing multiple characters, some typing nothing. Key strokes are repeatable (e.g. - typing "a" yields "agl" every time). Tried replacing with older style keyboad (with number pad) with same result, although different nonsense.  This is a sudden problem, with no obvious change in operation.

    I have similar problem.
MAC MINI LATE 2012 , Operating System : OSX 10.8.3 + Windows 8(bootcamp 5.0) 。the G6 bluetooth keyboard works fine in both OS. But some day in Windows 8, it typing nothing some time ,Or type a letter repeatable(e.g. - typing "a" yields "aaaaaaaaaaaaa" some time. This problem is only take place in Windows 8. OSX is OK.  I think apple should update the G6's firmware or bluetooth driver.

  • Keyboard printing wrong characters

My keyboard on my Macbook recently started typing strange characters, speciƒically ƒ,o which sometimes comes out with a slash thru it, the u is sometimes just a apostrophe, and the capitol ƒ is some other kind oƒ strange character Ï.  Neither the Alt, Control, or Commant keys are stuck.  The special characters is set to Roman, ƒont is Apple casual.  This happens in all soƒtware programs.  What is wrong?????  It's driving me crazy.  Google won't recognize any word I type which shows up with one oƒ these characters in it.
    Thanks

For those characters, your keyboard is typing as if the alt/option key was depressed, or the alt/option + shift keys.  It sounds like a hardware problem to me.

  • Keyboard types two characters at once

When I try to type in a password for a printer the keyboard types two characters at once.  i.e. 11 when I typed 1.  This only happens when I'm typing the printer password.  Why is this happening and how do I make it stop?

Hello kiddk66 and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
" This only happens when I'm typing the printer password."
So that's got to be a software incompatibility issue. Can you use another computer and eliminate the password or is this part of a shared workgroup of something like that?
Otherwise it would help to know which computer, size, year and OS you're running.

  • Typing the characters "oun" launches "Save As" window

    Product: HP ProBook 4530s
    O/S: Windows 7, 2009, SP1, 32 bit
Error message - nope, no error message, just frustrating!
Any changes - nope, still stock
Okay, here's what happens... typing the characters "oun" in any word in any program is kicking me out of what I was doing to some other command window, as if the combination of the letters O U N is acting like some kind of shortcut command.
In MS Word, Excel, or Powerpoint, if I type "oun" in any word, the "Save As" window jumps up in front of me.
In MS Outlook, same thing.  If I type any word with "oun" in it, like "around" "found" etc... it immediately jumps me out of the document, spreadsheet, presentation, or email, and brings up the "Save As" window.
Even in IE, it happens.  Just in trying to type this post, it has already happened every time I have typed these three characters in succession.  This odd window pops up at the bottom third of the IE screen with the main menu options "File Find Disable View Images Cache Tools Validate | Browser Mode: IE9 Compat View   Document Mode: IE7 standards" and a submenu with the options "HTML CSS Console Script Profiler Network"
I never realized how often I type this letter combination.  I find myself actually trying to think ahead and avoiding any word that might have "oun" in it.  This only happens on this HP Probook, and not any of the other machines here with the same release of MS Office.
Any clues as to what is going on, and how I can fix it, make it stop or go away?
    Thanks!

Well, thanks for the suggestion.  I have tried what you suggested.  I used Control Panel to uninstall HP Power Management, then downloaded and installed the version behind your link.  But... it still does it.  I thought is was only happening in MS Office products, where any word with the characters "oun" will bring up the "Save As" window.  But, even, here, in IE, if I type a word like counted or found, up pops a weird window on the bottom third of the screed that shows me HTML or CSS tabs, and let me choose style or document views... I never realized how many words have the characters o u n in succession in them until I hit this wall.  I have also learned that if I type them slow enough, I am not kicked out... I'd REALLY love to know what program is the root of this redirect and just uninstall or remove it.  But it appears that HP Power Management is not the solution, unless by manually uninstall, you could point me to the files I need to manually delete that Control Panel uninstall did not grab.
    With hope...

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.
