Why is my keyboard randomly switching and typing symbols?

The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great, in-depth steps for troubleshooting issues with keys not working as expected on your keyboard:

Particularly:
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working. If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly. Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.

Keyboard not typing or typing wrong symbol

I have a black macbook, the model which came out late 2007. After updating the system to os 10.6.2 today my keys aren't working as they should. the y will not type and neither will the number six. the delete doesn't do anthing and neither does the question mark, and rather than changing the volume the up volume key types "-" and the down types "[". any ideas or help? it seems new keys stop working or switch symbols as time goes on..

I would boot off of my external drive that still has a clone of my entire disk prior to installing the software update. That would tell me immediately if it was software or if the hardware had failed. If the computer works that way then clone the external drive back to the internal, test it of course, then redo the update and hope for better results the second time around.

Keyboard produces wrong symbols in vista

I have partitioned my had drive and installed Windows Vista
only when using windows side of partition the key board produces wrong symbo;s when using four of the keys and shift.
press shift and the first key in the number row gets a horizontal line with bent down end should be ~
press shift and number 2 gets " should be @
press shift and number 3 gets English pound sign should be #
press shift and quotation commas key gets @ should be "
I have tried re installing drivers and updated relevant software

This is what happens to windows, and that is why Apple is much better, the only problem with apple is that their computers are pricey, and most programs in the world is for windows. But Windows is just problem after problem, for example, my Windows XP Pro (In the bottom in green ) died from scandisk, now I am using my friend's 8 year old laptop because of this reason. Windows ME is slow, and cant do anything. So the main point I guess is that, why install Windows leaving your Mac prone to virises, spyware, and other problems, just stick to Mac, and your life is as simple as can be. No crashes, no problems such as this is in a Apple created environment such as OSX.

While typing keyboard starts typing wrong letters

I have checked my settings for my keyboard and have changed keyboards. I can open Pagemaker 7 & start typing, all's well. Then after a while it starts typing wrong letters & I can't use my short cuts. I also tryed reloading Pagemaker 7. I have run Malwarebytes, AVG, & Spybot. I can't find anything. It is also doing the same thing In Photoshop. It doesn't do it in any other programs besides Adobe.

I thought it was setup Default input language as English (United States).I checked and there was 2 other settings under keyboard besides US. United states-Dvorak and United States international. So I removed them. Also under Advanced Key Settings and Hot keys for imput languages - Switch between input languages was set up to work. I changed this to none. So far it has worked fine. Today is my long day at work so we'll see. Do you think that was it? How would that have gotten changed? I have done some windows updates recently that caused me problems with my display.

Thanks for the question. The following article outlines how to restore a previous iTunes library should there be no content after updating. While the article does not speak specifically to your symptoms, attempting the steps by utilizing the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder may resolve your issue.

What is the keyboard shortcut for symbols?

Somehow when wiping off my keyboard the buttons got pushed into a particular sequence that has changed my English keyboard into all symbols. Going to system preference/keyboard doesn't work because that says my keyboard is English. The other interesting thing is that the screen does a slow fade now when transitioning between say launch pad and then desktop.
Any one have a clue what I am talking about?

The symbols by be tied to the option key being stuck down, and the slow transition may be tied to the Shift key being stuck down.
If you open Language & Text System prefs, select Input source, and add the keyboard viewer to the input sources, you can select that from the Input menu and see if it shows the option and shift keys stuck down.

You may have to do this several times.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Someone wants to reset his apple ID password but he keeps on typing wrongly the email address (I think). It is very annoying to keep on receiving the emails. Also, I am afraid that someone may try to hack into my account. Is there any ways to stop that? How can I remove the credit card information? Thanks.

Your email address isn't a Gmail account by chance is it? The reason that I ask is because if I Gmail address includes up. In it it will also send an email to the same account that does not have a period in it. It's really stupid IMO.
