Keyboard Viewer - Palette Size

Is there a way to increase the size of the 'keyboard viewer' palette? With a number of languages(aside from English) the characters are pretty small and are not easily readable with such a small viewer. There's no handle in the corner to drag or resize - is there a way?
tia.

Open the Terminal app, copy and paste in this command, and hit the return key:
*defaults write com.apple.KeyboardViewerServer KeyboardViewerWindowIsZoomed 1*
Now open the Keyboard Viewer.

You can resize the keyboard window, positioning the mouse pointer at the edge of the window, clicking and dragging to the desired size.

  • No character palette, no keyboard viewer

In System Preferences >International > Input Menu, character palette and keyboard viewer seem to be totally missing! I cannot check them, and cannot make them appear in the menu bar. Has anyone else encountered this? Does anyone have a solution?

  • Keyboard Viewer+ Character Palette = madness

    I am going crazy!!
I turned on the keyboard viewer and the character palette.
Then I closed their windows. I turned them off in System Preferences.
They return every time I wake from sleep or screensaver.
I tried to delete all kinds of preferences. (Any that would change when I enabled
these two windows I would trash.) No good so far.
    Advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    charlie

Update: I was using "Require password when waking from sleep..."
I stopped using that. No more character palette.
    I re-enabled the password thing.
The character palette from H*ll returns.
Weird how it is coupled to the password thing.
Next I am trying logging out, restart etc.

  • Font Selection in Keyboard Viewer

In previous versions of the OS the Keyboard Viewer let me choose what font I wanted to view. Now all I see are "Standard" and a few odd fonts. Am I missing some preference setting that will allow me to view ANY font? I have, for instance, Koch Signs which I can't view at all any more.

for most special characters you must use the Character Palette and not the keyboard for input. The Favorites section of that is designed to provide easier access to special characters that are frequently used. Or a custom keyboard layout can sometimes easily be created to include characters you need all the time.
If you tell us exactly which ones you need, we can probably tell you whether and how a keyboard combo can be used.
In my workflow, the special characters I need to use generally do have a keyboard combination to activate them -- my frustration is over the seemingly increasing hassle it requires to see what that key combination is. And the difficulty with setting "Favorites" is that there aren't really any specific ones I frequently need on a regular basis.
Here's a typical example: I was recently using the Hoefler Text font to generate captions and special titles for some montages I was creating in Photoshop. Hoefler has an "Ornaments" style, which had some decorative glyphs I wanted to use to bookend some of the text entries. Using Font Book (with Preview set to Repertoire) I could easily see all the available glyphs in that Ornaments style, at whatever size I wanted to view them.
So far so good. And each of these characters had its own keyboard combination. The trouble is, Font Book (unless I'm missing something) won't tell me what that keyboard combination is for any given character. And Keyboard Viewer now won't let me select the font and at least see to which keys (and with which modifiers) all of the characters for that font have been mapped. (In fact, Keyboard Viewer should automatically open with whatever font you're currently using already selected.)
So I end up having to run my finger along every key in every row, and then do the same with Shift, Option, and Shift-Option held down, just to figure out which key combo generates the little left-facing squiggly thing in this particular font.
With Character Palette (which I've re-discovered thanks to this and other threads), I can at least use the Insert option to pop a selected character into whatever file I was working on -- but how do I first try out a special "string" of these characters to see how they'll look together? I seem to recall the old Key Caps utility would let you do that.
I guess my main point is that all of these kinds of functions and options need to be integrated into Font Book in an easy-to-use way.
PS The best place to tell Apple how you feel about this issue is here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Believe me, I have. For many, many apps. Many, many times.
I sometimes wonder how seriously the Feedback is actually monitored, however, since very often the options offered in the questions you need to fill out (what version of the app are you currently using; which version of the OS; etc.) are several months out of date. One can only hope that even though the pages themselves are not being actively maintained, at least some of the user input sent via those pages does get looked at.
(And while Apple would never say this publicly, IMHO if they're smart they've also got a staff of people whose only job is to monitor the Apple Discussions Forums, and track what's working and what's causing frustrations in the OS, its hardware, and all of the apps.)
In any case, thanks Tom for the reply and the offer of assistance.

  • Keyboard Viewer does not appear in menu bar input menu...help with 10.4.9

When I click on the flag in my menu bar, I have two options (Show/Hide Input Source Name and Open International Preferences). Is there any way to test the special characters on my keyboard if there is no keyboard viewer or keycaps application? Thanks very much.

    Hi.
Go to System Preferences/International/Input Menu and tick On Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer.
Next time you click on the menu bar flag, you'll see "Show Character Palette" and "Show Keyboard Viewer"

  • Why is the Keyboard Viewer so small??

Does anyone know of a way to make the Keyboard Viewer larger?
I have looked in the Prefs > International pane fields, but see nothing that will allow me to enlarge this valuable feature. I must be going blind because its difficult to make out the keys. It seems to me that this used to be larger before I upgraded to Leopard, but I cannot be certain of this.
    Thanks,

    Hi den.thed!
I'm looking at my minuscule keyboard going, "Green button? Green button with a + on it? I don't see ANY green button ... hm..mmmmm ... "
Then my mouse cursor - on its own, mind you - magically slid over the fruit-flavored window control jelly beans at the top left of the keyboard palette and they faintly lit up from their dull grayed out state. As I peered at them with squinted eyes, I thought I saw a very faint black character embedded in each ..
    ... green button, huh ...
As I was mulling this over, my mouse cursor just snapped over the green orb and clicked it.
VOILA! The keyboard sprung to life startling me in the process.
"I can see, I can see! I yelled."
My wife came rushing in, "Are you alright? Are you OK?"
Me: "Oh, I'm fine, honey ... er, I mean Honey. I just discovered that my Mac is Magical. That's all."
She just shook her head and walked out.
    Thanks den.thed.

  • Keyboard viewer and font choice

    Hello...
I seem to remember pre 10.5 being able to choose different fonts to display in the keyboard viewer. With 10.5 that ability seems to have disappeared. Is there a way to bring it back? This is important to me because, e.g. different versions of unicode Hebrew font will be more or less accurate in portraying the characters on the keyboard viewer.
    Thanks.

    Tom Gewecke wrote:
Keyboard Viewer is pretty much useless without the ability to select the font.
It certainly isn't useless for me. Could you explain why you think that in more detail? Do you often need to use fonts with non-standard mappings?
Sure... and I frequently use Keyboard viewer to easily find, view and/or insert characters from a specific font. Particularly for glyphs, dingbats, ornaments, etc.
    Here's an example:
    I'm working in Fireworks.
I have a font called "Type Embellishments One"
I know there is a flower but have no clue which key.
    Pre-Leopard:
Open Keyboard Viewer choose "Type Embellishments One" from the drop-down
Toggle modifier keys to find glyph.
Click picture of flower on the keyboard (which happens to be shift-y)
    Character is inserted.
    Leopard:
    Open Keyboard Viewer
See that there is no way to choose "Type Embellishments One" from the drop-down =/
    Open Character Palette
View: Glyphs > Click Glyph Catalog tab
Choose "Type Embellishments One" from font drop-down
Scroll through list til I find the flower I'm looking for and double-click it.
Get error: "Couldn't set application font" (which is already set, btw)
Try dragging and dropping from char palette to Fireworks text editor
Question mark gets input, not shift-y.
Character Palette doesn't show which key invokes Unicode F059, so I end up just going back to Fireworks and hitting every key until I find the glyph I'm looking for.
In Tiger, (and +*every other version of Mac OS since KeyCaps was introduced*+ ) you used to be able to just pop open keyboard viewer, choose any active font from the drop-down, hold your modifier keys to find the character you want, and click the key with your mouse to insert the character. Simple. Elegant. Exactly what KeyCaps was designed for.
Leopard removed this functionality. I don't understand why.

  • Can't find Keyboard Viewer

    Hi,
I can't figure out how to make a simple copyright symbol. I looked and looked for the Keyboard Viewer in the Preferences>International, but couldn't find it, or anything like it.
I just want something like Key Caps.
    Thanks,
    Allan
PS BTW I'm again having that problem of the message posting when I press Return. I've edited this post 4 times.

    Hi Allan
I have not experienced a loss of keyboard Viewer myself, but the following link to the subject by Giorgio Piras, may allow you to recover it.
Missing character palette or keyboard viewer
The path given applies to 10.3 as well, so it may work for you too.
The behaviour of "Show Input mode palette" seems normal. That is what is does on my machine as well, which as you have noticed does not do anything. It seems to be merely an alternative to going to the menu bar if you have more than one language to choose to run.

  • Keyboard viewer too small

Does anyone know how to increase the font size, or just the size in general, of Keyboard Viewer?

If you click the Maximize button (the button in the top left with the + sign) it enlarges. Click again to shrink. AFAIK there are only the sizes of small and gigantic.

  • More Keyboard Viewer problems ...

Hi - I'm trying to see the Keyboard Viewer. According to help,
    1) Choose Apple > System Preferences and click International.
    2) Click Input Menu, then select the checkbox next to Keyboard Viewer.
    3) Choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu on the right side of the menu bar (the one that looks like a flag or alphabetical symbol).
#3 is where I'm having problems. I click the checkbox next to Keyboard viewer but am unable to find the 'Show Keyboard Viewer' command. I am assuming something will pop up when I do this? (Or perhaps I've already done it and nothing happens. If this is the case - then what? How do I see the selected keyboard layout?)
I'm assuming this is the way I'll be writing french words (with accents) into my document?
    Julie

    HI JCanlis,
Ok.. number 3. When you click the "flag" and see the check mark, just below that the pop up menu doesn't say: Show Character Palette and Show Keyboard Viewer? Make sure when you click on the flag to allow the pop up menu to appear and scroll down to Show Keyboard Viewer.
If you still can't prompt the Keyboard Viewer try this. Locate this file:
    com.apple.HIToolbox.plist It's here: MacinoshHD/Library/Preferences.
Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash. Reboot. It's ok to Trash a preference file, your Mac will create a new one for you.
Post back if you still need help...

  • Where is keyboard viewer gone?

    Hi there,
I am trying to display the keyboard viewer but it is nowhere to be found... Looking at the help it says:
    <quote>
    To access Keyboard Viewer:
    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click International.
    2. Click Input Menu, then select the checkbox next to Keyboard Viewer
    </quote>
Well I know it must be me but I can't see any checkbox or any reference to Keyboard Viewer. Am I think or is it really not there?...
    Em

Under the "Input Menu" tab in "International" the first three items in the list should be "Character Palette", "Japanese Kana Palette", and "Keyboard Viewer", then a bunch of regional input methods depending on your OS localization.

  • Missing keyboard viewer from international pane

Was following the tutorial from apple for their "Quick Tip of the Week: Keyboard Viewer"
.However when i open the international section from system preferences and select input menu, there is no keyboard viewer..I only see the various language formats and nothing else..
Any ida how to find the keyboard viewer menu??
    Thanks in advance

I have just realised that I am suffering from exactly the same thing. All the diffent languages are listed under Input Menu but none of the palettes (i.e. keyboard viewer, character palette, etc.).
I wonder if it can have anything to do with the keyboard firmware update 1.0 for the MacBook.
Unless someone can come up with a solution I consider formatting and starting anew.

  • Keyboard viewer display preferences

I am using the onscreen keyboard viewer on some kiosks and they all look different. One just has the alpha keys, one has the alpha and number keys and one has the alpha keys, numbers and arrow keys. I have no idea why they are different or how to change them. Dragging their size does not affect the layout. Can someone please tell me how to change the display on the keyboard viewer.
    Thanks!
    T

    Hi Paopaperino,
ok, this means you are missing some system files.
There are two things you can do:
    1. Do an Archive and Install. This will resolve the problem for sure. All your personal stuff will stay intact, but you will have to apply all software updates again, as this will set you back to 10.4. The best way to update your installation back to 10.4.3 is to download the Combo Updater.
    2. Try Pacifist. This will allow you to extract the missing files from your Tiger DVD/CD. However, you do not know exactly which files are missing. Luckily, Pacifist now includes a feature that allows you to check for missing files. You just have to select the right package to check (I would guess that it is MacOSX10.4.pkg, but again I am not sure).

  • CUstomise the Keyboard Viewer

    Hi.
I discovered keyboard viewer which is really useful.
Is there a way to map additional keys on to a specific language version?
For example I activated the czech language keyboard but it actually lacks a few of the specific accented letters I need. They are available in the character palette and I wondered if i could somehow create a custom keyboard based around the czech one but which mapped a few of the additional characters to some keys?
Does that make sense? If so please help!

    Hi mikemarks,
Yes, it is possible to make any custom keyboard layout you'd wish to use and install it in your ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts folder.
Tom Gewecke has a quite a few special layouts for pretty much every language, look especially at the "Extra Keyboards" section HERE.
In case you don't find exactly the one you need, hopefully you get a reply by Tom himself later today in this very thread?
