Keyboard volume bottons not responding

I have a Mac Pro, I have it connected via cable to my sterio speakers, the sound plays out of the speakers, however the volume buttons on my keyboard will only control the Mac Pro speaker on the computer, sometimes just with clicking all sorts of random buttons on the audio preference screen, it will switch the keyboard response to my external speakers, but more often than not, that doesn't work. Another thing i've noticed is that my computer no longer chimes on startup. Could this be related?
Thanks in Advance,
-Jules

I am having the same problems. There is no sound chime coming out of my external speakers when I start up my mac. The sound chime comes out of the internal speakers, which sounds like a tin can.... Why does the startup chime not come out of my external speakers like my Powermac G5 did? I noticed that if I plug the speakers through the front of the machine the startup chime will work out of my external speakers; but I don't like to have cables coming out of the front for esthetic reasons and also I like to leave the front speaker jack free for my headphones when I don't want to disturb anyone from my loud music. Also when I plug in headphones through the front they do not work automatically like my PowerMac G5 did, I have to manually go to sound options and change the sound output controls from external speaker to internal speakers(headphones). This is a real nuisance and don't know why Apple didn't leave the settings the same as the G5. Besides installing SOUNDSOURCE which I have noticed didn't really correct the problem...basically just made it easier to access the sound options whenever I wanted to use headphones or toslink cables for my stereo...so confusing and a hassel. Is there anything I can do?

I suppose that you can demand all you want. It would have to be proven that the iOS update broke this particular function but it could also be said that it was just a matter of time that the broken thing manifested itself. Since the phone is out of warranty, it could also be said that it is your risk to update software. I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but we are not Apple. We are users like you and just try and provide support to other users. What you decide to do from here is your decision. I've given you all I know to do.

  • Volume Keys Not Responding

I purchased a new wireless keyboard just recently.  I have attempted to increase/decrease volume with the function keys at the very top of the keyboard.  They have not responded.  After thoroughly searching the communities and repeating steps others have followed, I am still not able to use the volume keys.  I need help.

you need to reset your SMC... heres the link

  • Apple Bluetooth Keyboard : ESC Key not responding

I'm using an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard with many Apple products (MBA, MBP, iPad) and i have a big problem : The ESC key is not responding. Everything else is working on my keyboard except the ESC Key. Do you know how to fix it ?

    Hello:
It is, of course, possible that the KB has failed....
Try resetting the PRAM.  If that does not help, I think it is time for a new one.

  • Volume button not responding (F10-12)

It was rare problem with Maverics 10.9, but after I updated it to Yosemite beta 5, now this problem appears everytime I make computer to sleep and open it. F10-F12 does not respond. It makes somekind of sound, but can't control volume. (Sound is OK), I am not using in System Preferences option to use volume button with FN, and it helps only after I restart my macbook in safe mode. First question, is there anyone now with this problem? And second, if this is not the MacBook Air (mid-2013) problem? I checked older topics - some people with Air had this problem, what about others? Is there any solution to it?

Since you are running beta software, you need to go to the developers forum, not here.

  • Mac Book Pro Keyboard, Track pad not responding at login page

URGENT! URGENT! I´m currently in the middle of the amazon shooting a documentary and my Macbook Pro boots up to the login page but I cannot nothing appears on the login line when I type, and my track pad in not responding. Keyboard and track pad dead. However, I can hit the control-apple-power button and get the shutdown-restart-sleep sceen. I plugged in my usb mouse and that works--track pad does not.
I have rebooted, with power supply, without power supply; removed-replaced battery; still the same problem, boot to login screen--now keyboard, not track pad.
    Any suggestions?

I also have this problem. After closing my MBP to put it into sleep mode, I opened it a few hours later to resume work and the machine was locked up. I shut the machine down by holding the power key for 5 seconds. Now, every time I try to restart, the login screen appears (after a very long boot time) but the trackpad and keyboard do not respond.

  • Volume Keys not responding after installing service pack 1.

Okay, I've scoured the internet, and I can't find anyone else with a similar problem or a way to fix it, hopefully ya'll will have an answer:
I recently just updated my Vista Ultimate Operating System (using Bootcamp) to service pack 1. Prior to installing service pack 1, when I pressed F3-F5 on the keyboard, they would respond in the same manner that they would on OS X where F3 would mute, F4 would make the sound lower, and F5 would increase the sound.
However, after Service Pack 1, the buttons do nothing more than mute and turn on the sound. I reinstalled the Boot Camp drivers, ran all the software updates (found no updates on both apple and windows), and tried to repair Vista from the original install disk. Nothing helped.
However, here's the thing: When I press the buttons the same little overlay comes up displaying the sound volume, but there's a big 'denied' circle on the bottom of it. To describe it slightly better, there's a circle with the line through it(looks like a no smoking sign), placed over the squares representing the volume on the overlay to show volume control.
I'm lost as to what to do since all the other keys work, including the brightness control, and they worked before I installed Service Pack 1. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it?

i just uninstalled SP1 and it went back to normal,
go to Control Panel and on the left side theres something called "view installed updates" go there and just uninstall SP1 and your fine. but if you need sp1, i don't know how to help you there.

  • Mac Aluminum keyboard VOLUME KEYS not remapping

So I bought a new full size aluminum keyboard from apple. Totally great design, except that the volume keys are perplexing me. Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has moved the volume keys to F10, F11 and F12, instead of above the keypad where they used to be.
There's apparently no way I can figure out how to move these volume keys back to the old places which are easier to use.
But even if they couldn't move, the big problem I'm having is when I use Final Cut Pro. I map the function keys F1 through F9. However, I CANNOT map any of these keys unless I check the keyboard control panel box to use the function keys as "standard function keys". This is great except that when I check this, I can no longer adjust the volume with the volume keys without holding down the "FN" key. I adjust the volume a LOT while working with video. So holding the FN key each time to adjust or mute the volume is VERY VERY ANNOYING.
So here's the question, is there a solution to this or are the Apple Engineers giving their users the middle finger? I've called Apple and they have no answers. Awesome.
    Thanks,
    Frustrated

I had another unrelated keyboard problem that gave me a tiny bit of information.
(QPI would not connect to keyboard on start and restart, Apple updated the SMC to fix this problem but only on the new Ash Can Mac Pros, older Mac Pros are simply out of luck)
In this process I was shipped a replacement keyboard for free as a troubleshooting test.
I was sent the wrong keyboard as luck would have it.
In this case the wrong keyboard was the "A" model and my Mac Pro uses the "B" model.
The tiny bit of information I received is that Apple defines the "A" model as "Keyboard, Extended, Wired (2007)" and the "B" model as "Keyboard, Extended, Wired (2011)".
    This can be helpful.
You can contact Apple and request the 2007 model as a replacement part.... OR.... use the serial number from an older Mac and request a replacement keyboard.
This will allow you to purchase a spare "A" model. ($50-$60)
(it also helps to know the model number of the keyboard but not much because Apple does not seem to have that as a reference)
How long the 2007 model will be available requires a crystal ball but we can bet that it won't be around forever.
The writing is on the wall.
    DID YOU KNOW?
You can no longer purchase a compatible Apple Monitor for ANY Mac Pro previous to 2013.
Since the new model keyboard is incompatible (or nearly) with older machines and there is no Apple monitor compatible with older machines, the writing on the wall says.... you MUST purchase a new Mac if ANY peripheral fails.
(management calls this.... "doing good business")
    To answer your question.
If a peripheral fails and your computer is still fully functional, you are out of luck IF.... you did not buy compatible spares when they were available.
I certainly did. (I bought both original keyboard and aluminum "A" model spares as well as three 27" DisplayPort monitors.... Displayport monitors work with Thunderbolt machines -  Thunderbolt monitors do Not work with DisplayPort machines.... its One-Way Street)

  • Dropped mid 2013 macbook air keyboard and trackpad not responding

My laptop slid off of my desk and onto the floor earlier this week. After checking to see if everything was okay- it was not!
My trackpad and keyboard are now unresponsive.
Macbook keeps searching for an external keyboard/ mouse.
Some reviews say to remove the back case of the laptop and make sure everything is plugged in. Other reviews say to reset SMC and NVRAM. I am currently backing everything up , but which route is best for a dropped laptop?
    thanks in advance!

Take it to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center to see if it is salvageable.  Sounds like it's very likely not salvageable.
Hopefully you have a good backup, created before this catastrophe.

  • Hi! i recently got a macbook pro 15" retina display, and i tried to play assassin's creed 2 and other games on it, but the thing is, the keyboard keys will not respond except the trackpad, and the keyboard keys work fine outside of gaming.

Hi! so like i said in the title, i tried to play any game like assassin's creed and minecraft, but the keyboard wont respond but the trackpad does, also i tried restarting reinstalling checking if mouse key is on or off and all that, and it still wont fix this problem.  Outside of gaming though, the keyboard works with no problem. Please help me!

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Keyboard volume controls not working after 10.5.7 combo update

Actually, editing my original post, I now have to use the fn key aswell as F3, F4 and F5. Previously didn't need to use finger aerobics to change the volume, it wa done with one finger.
Is there a way of changing it back ?

I have unchecked "Use all F1 etc keys as standard function keys" in keyboard prefs and we are back to normal.
    This has worked.

  • Keyboard volume keys not working with win7

I installed Win7 yesterday and have lost the use of the volume control keys, as well as the display brightness keys. I come from XP where they were working.
Any suggestions on how to get them back. I'm using the thin aluminum keyboard.

Thank you for your reply. I thought I was running BC 3.2 32-bit  but took a look and it's 3.1.10.
Downloaded the 3.2 32-bit BC update but it wouldn't install because of 2- errors:
Service KeyAgent (KeyAgent) failed to start.
I then pressed "ignore" and got:
Service MacHAL (MacHALDriver) failed to start.
Any advice on correcting these errors?
