Keyboard - Wear and Tear

Hi all
Have a small problem with my keyboard.
Because my fingers and thumbs are on the large side, I tend to use my fingernails to press the keys - I much prefer the actual keyboard to the virtual one.
Anyhow the other day when the keyboard light came on, I noticed a rather large whight light in the centre of the space-bar.
Basically some of the surface paint on the key has been scratched off by my fingernail
I could perhaps "paint" it matt black with a tiny brush but wonder whether the purchase of another keyboard would be possible?  If so how would I replace it? - I presume replacement keys are not possible?
I love my N900 but the keyboard is not so nice with this white blotch on it every time the keyboard is open with the light on.
Anyone else with this "scratch problem"?  I've searched but so far it seems there has been no thread on the subject.  For now I'm reverting to the virtual keyboard, so I don't have to look at it lol!
Would appreciate some practical help
TIA

depends on what country you are in.
if you are in the US,  then scratch the warranty and sending it to them.   you will be without a phone for two-four weeks.
i would do one of these two things.
get a permenant black marker and touch it up periodically
or
get a kb on ebay....you would have to purchasem a full kit most likely, then do a seach for the disassembly guide for nokia n900.
dissasembly is not that difficult.
personnally i would lean toward just using a marker, because while you can pucharse housings, the screws are known to breack off at the head....which would be a worse problem.
hope that helps.

  • Mini-DVI port not working: wear and tear?

I had been happily using the mini-DVI port to play content on TV, using a DVI to Video adapter : plugging and unplugging probably twice a week.
Now it seems to have stopped, abruptly: no signal at all is reaching the TV. (Adapter still works fine on my MacBook.)
What are the chances of wear and tear damaging the DVI port? Is this a complicated fix? Any other thoughts? No recent upgrades or updates.
"About this Mac" reckons it's mirroring fine, so it feels like a hardware thing. Many thanks in advance.

    Hello ewfelton
It is very possible that the DVI port on the iMac has been damaged from wear and tear, as it's harder to get at than the MacBook.
I would disconnect everything from the iMac, grab a clean towel and turn it face down on the desk. Then with a magnifying glass and light inspect the DVI port for a broken or bent pin. In the process of inspecting the port your SMC will also be reset, follow the instruction for "How to reset the System Management Controller" when your done.
If the port seems OK and the SMC reset doesn't get it going use Disk Utility to Repair Disk Premissions and try it again.
Your local Apple Store or local Apple Service Provider can replace a bad or damaged DVI port.

  • Mini DVI Broken (Wear and Tear?)

I've been pushing my mid-2007 Mac around for a while and I think its startting to sputter out. Whereas I have other computers I'd like to make my Mac run as long as possible before it goes kaput completely. For instance, its monitor screen is completely broken and unusable. To keep it going, I've been attaching it through a Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter to a AOC 23" LCD screen for a while. This has been a suitable replacement until recently. I plug in the adapter, the screen powers up normally, working perfectly for about a second, the computer eminates a high pitched ringing noise, and then the screen goes out as if unconnected unable to read the adapter at all. I'm near certain this problem is with the computer's Mini DVI port and not the adapter or screen. I've tried two adapters and connected the screen to other things. Same problem with other adapters and the screen works with other things. Can it be fixed? Overly costly? Is it possible that the problem is something else? I have literally no screen here so I have only the hardware availible to me at the moment, making things difficult.

downgrading is not supported by Apple and doing so has the potential to brick your device. so, you can't. if you have feed back for the new iOS you can provide that here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

  • Is there an on-screen touch feature that can be purchased to save wear and tear on the home/escape button?

Is there an on-screen touch feature for iPad 2 that will save wear and tear on the home/escape button?  If so, what's it called and where can I buy it?

And if you are running iOS 5, you can enable Multitasking Gestures in the General settings. This enables you to quit out of an app by just pinching with four or five fingers. That saves a lot of use of the Home button.

  • What is normal does wear and tear look like on a mac book charger

My childs school is charging us $80 to replace her charger that stopped working and stated it was her fault it stopped working.  It was a bit frayed at the top but that's it.   The charger was 2 years old when she received it.

    have a picture?
80% of wear and tear you cant see ,which is twisting the cable up on the charger and bending it over and over and ruining the copper feeds running thru the rubber coating over the PVC coated sheaths of the copper wire
So, looking at it often doesnt tell a whole lot.
if the wires under the rubber look very coiled and twisted, that would be abuse

  • Bootcamp rebooting...wear and tear

    Hi all,
I'm now 2 weeks into my new macbook pro (i am a PC switcher), and still lovin it. I just wanted to get people's opinions on something.
I have installed XP using bootcamp for the sole purpose of playing a few games and using 1 online app that requires IE. Other than that, I'm strictly OS X Leopard.
What are your opinions of the wear and tear on the computer from having to reboot from one OS to another constantly. Constantly being like once a day or once every 2 days. My profession is in electronics, more specifically single board computers used in wireless telecom infrastructure. So i am fairly knowledgeable in this area. I know that "soft" boots are no big deal. As no power is removed from the board. It's just a reset signal to every part on the board. However the stuff i work on doesn't have a harddrive or any mechanical parts like a "computer" does.
Everytime you reboot the harddrive stops spinning and then restarts along with the optical drive possibly right?
So chime in please. What's your opinion?

If it were a problem, Apple would have never made Boot Camp.
It is not a problem at all.
I have been doing it for months without any issues.

  • Define wear and tear

  • Screensaver wear and tear

Yes sorry i know this is my second screensaver post today.
I love screensavers, I think they are great to look at. But, do you all think it causes undue wear and tear on the computer running a graphically advanced screensaver as opposed to one that just shows pictures? I'm currently using Fenetres Volantes (http://objective-cocoa.org/fenetresvolantes/en/index_en.html) which I definitely recommend you all check out. But sometimes when it is running I hear the fans speed up. What do you all think?
    Brett

No big deal, it's just using more processor power and it gets warm. Not to worry.

  • Wear and tear

    hi
is there any function module to calculate wear and tear for particular asset?

    Hi,
this is one of the central functions in the Fixed Asset module ... depreciation calculation. Please regard the SAP Help Portal, there is lots of documentation on this issue.
To your question: yes, there is of course a function to calculate depreciation, but I would recommend to first try standard reporting as well as standard functions to calculate/display depreciation.

  • Wear and tear around where the screen is connected to the body

I have a mac book pro,, and recently I noticed some wear and tear in the area where the screen is connected to the body,, represented by discoloration in the material on both sides at the exact location where the screen plastic connects inside the almunim body. I was wondering whether I should be worried,, and if it is something to worry about would my appeal care cover it?

If it is just at the bottom of the screen surround on the rubber part, I would not be concerend. You can remove it with a damp Qtip, turn your MBP off and be gentle and you can get the dirt off.  If you have concerns, take to Apple you have Applecare.

  • WILL USE MY COMPUTER EVERYDAY CAUSE A FASTER WEAR AND TEAR?

Hello, i have a MBP and use it a lot everyday. I work at home with my blog site but also take my laptop to work to use it during lunch. I use it a lot everyday. Like i have heard some everyday used PC's wear out the DVD/CD drive and the mouse pad becomes unresponsibe due to time and useage. I heard many original macbook pro's having dead pixels.

Yes, using the machine more will wear it out.
1: The keyboard is weak bubble membrane like technology, use a external USB "clicky clack" DAS Mac Keyboard with it's 6 foot cord for most of your typing.
2: Although Apple is trying to get rid of it, the cheap two button scroll wheel mouse is still supreme compared to trackpads which do wear out.
3: The case can get scratched by jewelry and chemical reactions with your body
4: The Ethenet port can get worn out fast, use Wifi. The USB ports usually last, unless you abuse them.
5: Open/close the lid from the center.
6: Cover the keyboard area, but allow air underneath, to prevent spills and dirt/dust from getting inside.
7: Use the optical drive sparringly, not for DVD playback or large burnings, use a external optical drive or send it out to cd/dvd duplication service.
8: Use a MacTruck or heavily padded case.
9: The power cable can get worn, keep it off the floor.
10: Use screensaver, display sleep etc to prevent the screen from wearing out prematurely.
My 1.75 year old machine still looks and smells like brand new, but a MBP with daily use will last about 4-5 years, less with abuse.
However if you use the onboard keyboard and tpye everyday, it will start to look sorry in about 3+ years, just when your AppleCare expires and Apple will doom your machine to forever slowness with a bloated OS X upgrade or two.

  • Wear and tear on S10e touchpad - Is a replacement available anywhere?

    Hi Guys,
I've been following several threads here but never felt the need to contribute (shy lol) but I have noticed that the touchpad on me beloved S10e is becoming "shiney". All laptops suffer from this but the rate at which my S10e is wearing is becoming a concern! Maybe I'm just too fussy - with my workhorse T42  I've gone through 2 new keyboards and a new touch pad!
I've removed the front lower panel and seeing as it's one piece I was wondering if there are replacements available for the user to replace?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
my S10e touchpad gets more and more shiny since 4 month of nearly daily use... not often use the touchpad because i use at home a mice instead the touchpad...never the less it becomes shiny ...
i think the only way to get a new palmrest within includes the touchpad is from the lenovo customer service...
but i am waiting a bit more to get a new one in under warranty service... ...
because it is not a normal abrasive  ... i think...

  • Trackpad wear and tear?

My macbook is in use almost 40-50% of the day. I work the most with Illustrator, Logic, Garageband, Word, Safari, iChat, iTunes.. I really go to town with this laptop.
I'm starting to notice some wear in the center of my trackpad, it's a whole lot shinier than it used to be.. and it's got a lot more traction (not as smooth anymore) than the edges.
Do your guys' trackpads look/feel worn? Is this normal? I've had my macbook for about 6 or 7 months now.
    Thanks very much

It is effects of grease caused by the friction between your finger and trackpad. Better using a mouse. If u prefer to use trackpad, try some protection shield.
