Keyboard wonky.... delete/backspace key not working

I have the flat Ali keyboard. Got it about a month ago. It was working OK until yesterday. Went to System Preferences and set the F9 key to show "All windows". After doing this, the Delete key began working in forward-space manner instead of backspace.
The ARROW keys no longer work. Left arrow goes all the way to the top of the page, rather than one space back. Other three arrows do nothing.
Went back to System Preferences. Selected reset defaults. Did not fix the problem.
What do I try next?

Eventually found the answer myself. I deselected the button for "Use F1 and F2 keys as standard....."
It has been a good reminder to only change one thing at a time when "messing" with the System Preferences panel.

  • Backspace Key not working since update to 10.5.8

    Hi,
    I recently updated to 10.5.8 (or which ever update it was where the iDisk icon turned blue) and now my backspace key doesn't seem to be working. I am using a white Apple USB keyboard. The backspace key now functions like the forward delete key and if I want to backspace I have to press Shift + Backspace. This is very frustrating and not something I have had to do before or need to do on my Powerbook.
    At first I thought the keyboard was broken, but I am running a Power Mac G4 on a switch cable with the same keyboard and monitor. I have updated the Power Mac to 10.5.8 and the backspace key works fine.
    If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    Yours
    Dominic

    I think you wanted to say Mail 4.6, or is Mail 3.6 right? There's a bug in OS X 10.6.8 that may make Mail stop working after updating to 10.6.8. Apple has got the steps to fix that > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4424?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Backspace key not working

    Approx. a week ago my backspace key stopped working.  Haven't a clue as to why or what might have triggered this.  All other keys appear to work.  No other issues detected on my system.  Have tried reseating the key, air dusting the area, etc.

    Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

    Hi,
    In my experience with Maple I have noticed that some versions do not accept backspace and will only register shift-backspace as a valid combination.
    Try using shift-backspace and let me know if that works.

  • Macintosh 128k backspace key not working

    I just bought an operational 1984 Macintosh 128k. All of the keys work, but backspace. Since this is a key I use a lot, I want to have it work. There is something wrong with the key, not the software. If I go to Key Caps, the backspace button on the screen will work if I press it. The key on the computer, for some reason, will not backspace when using macwrite. What should I do?

    Try E-Bay. Any keyboard for the 128k, 512k, or the Macintosh Plus will work for you. The later versions of the keyboard include a number pad while the earlier ones did not. Any Mac after the Plus, such as the SE or Classic, will not work since they use ADB.
    It's not likely you can repair it. I'd recommend gently popping off the button (be careful not to force it off) and see if cleaning it helps. You mentioned that it works only with the caps-lock, which is unusual, which may mean it could be electrical. Most likely you can't repair it.
    While I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem, you can try to boot off another disk just to double-check.

  • Backspace key not working - Macbook Pro using Mavericks

    I've got a Macbook Pro (early 2011 model) which I upgraded to Mavericks earlier this year and all has been working fine. Over the past few days I noticed my backspace key was playing up (sometimes it worked, other times I had to press hard a few times before it would work at all) until today when it decided it would not work at all. I have already checked in System Preferences and restored defaults as well as resetting the PRAM but to no avail so far. Is there anything else I can try or will I need to take it back to the store and get it looked at?

    Since you reset the PRAM, I would take it in for diagnosis.

  • New Apple Keyboard - Dashboard and Exposé Keys not working

    I have the new Apple Keyboard connected to my PowerMac G5 and i have installed the lasted Keyboard Software Update (1.1) from the Apple website. All new function keys are working (the media keys, brightness, etc.) except for the dashboard and exposé keys. I cannot get them to work, not even asign them in the preferences. Anyone else have this problem? Solutions?

    I bought the new aluminum keyboard the other day, but didn't notice there was a software update required. Last night a keyboard software package appeared in Software Update, so I downloaded and installed it. Now virtually nothing works in the function keys except brightness and volume. No dashboard where it's supposed to be, no Exposé, and worryingly no F12 Preview In Browser, which I use a lot for Dreamweaver and web design. Dashboard now appears in F13.
    I then went and downloaded the 1.1 Update I should have done in the first place, but this has changed nothing. And yes, I think the PowerPC users are being forgotten when this new stuff is made. But...just how many million of us are there?

  • G,H,Backspace Keys Not Working- G7 Series Notebook

    Product name: HP Pavilion G7-B5Z48UA
    Operating system: Windows 8 64 bit
    I purchased this computer about a month ago, and it was fine. A few days ago, I noticed that several of the keys (g,h,',backspace, 8) were not working. After the computer has been on for a few minutes, they start to work. This lasts for about a minute or two, then they stop working again.

    Hello Lorelly,
    Take a look at this page and follow the troubleshooting steps to update your BIOS.  The latest version (F.23) was released less than 25 days ago.
    Please let me know if this helps resolve your issue.
    Good luck!

  • Backspace key not working on SQL Developer 3.2.20.09 on Mac OS X 10.7.4

    Hi,
    I've searched around and found that the backspace and arrow key problem has been a known issue on 1.x versions of SQL Developer. In that version the fix was to reload the keyboard Accellerator bindings in Tools->Preferences->Accellerators. However, the Accellerator dialog isn't available on 3.2.2 version. Is there any other way to fix it? I know on some Macs, the keys work fine.
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
    The Accelerator feature was renamed. Rather than
    Tools->Preferences->Accelerators -> Load Presettry instead
    Tools->Preferences-> Shortcut Keys -> More Actions -> Load Keyboard SchemeHopefully reloading in 3.2.2 will have the same impact as in the 1.x releases for your issue.

  • JMaskField mask input : delete and backspace do not work

    I am using this package for formatted input.
    Delete and backspace do not work if the field is created with a default text as in the code snippet I attach. Did somebody managed this to work? How? delete and backspace work badly in everycase anyway.
    best regards

    MaskMacros macros = new MaskMacros();
    macros.addMacro('*',"[a-zA-Z0-9]");
    macros.addMacro('#', "[0-9]");
    macros.addMacro('@', "[a-zA-Z]");
    macros.addMacro('%',"[A-Z]");
    macros.addMacro('*',"[a-zA-Z0-9]");
    MaskField2 k = new MaskField2("CODE******",macros);

    Nope, I don't think those keys are even "firing" as another person worded it. I can push the buttons down, so they aren't stuck but it doesn't seem to be sending any signal.

  • My Keyboard and the Delete/Backspace Key

    So last night I was looking through my system settings and making small tweaks here and there where I wanted them. It was a nice little experience. However, I somehow disabled my delete(backspace) key completely. Also other keys like my shift key are suddenly sticking. I have gone back in and tried to restore everything back to factory settings on my keyboard and still nothing. Am I missing something or is there somewhere else I should be looking to fix this besides going into System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>???? I am so confused I do not know what I did.

    Yes. "Shift key sticking" sounds like 'Sticky Keys' - check in System Preferences > Universal Access > Keyboard.

    Do you have "Automatically Adjust Brightness" check box ticked in System Preferences > Displays > Display ? If so, you can't manually adjust brightness.
