Keychain and password

Hi,
I changed the password because a family member passed away, now the key chains are all messed up and so now I would like to change the administrator to.
What do I do next?

The family member passed away. I'd changed the main password using the original cd but now there are passwords associated with all kinds of things, like removing the old administrator so my boy doesn't have to see his mom's name come up all the time now that I've messed things up. The key chain passwords with the old admin aren't even necessary but some of them are locked and I can't change admin or the name of the computer, etc.
As near as I can tell, I couldn't go back to zeros and ones at this point, nor can I update software. It wasn't so bad until I changed the password using the original cd.

KeyChain and Password Security

Could someone please explain to me the answer to this conundrum? If I secure a file with a password, I am asked whether I want to add it to my KeyChain. If I do so, the file can be opened in the ordinary way by double-clicking on it. So what is the point of the password?
A related question is that I am also asked (and even recommended) to provide a password hint. What is the purpose of that?

You are right. I should be the only who has access to the passwords. But I am not. I am the only person in my house who uses my computer, so I do not log out when I shut it down. The consequence is that if a burglar were to break in, or a dinner-guest were to bring along a friend with criminal tendencies, that person would only have to start my computer up and s/he would have access to my keychain.
Even if I were always to log out when shutting down, logging back in only requires a single password, which may or may not be easily guessed.
It is quite clear that, as dwbrecovery said earlier in this string, I should not add the passwords of password-protected confidential documents to my keychain, and I have removed the one for the document I was concerned about from my keychain.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the log in password or the prompts that I keep getting everytime that I start the computer or open mail ?
I've unlocked the keychain and unlocked the file vault It says anyone can access everything but it doesn't behave that way and it's driving me mad !
I've run first aid for keychain but no luck. Any help would be really welcome.

If you are using Apple's mail application try going into Mail Preferences click the accounts pane/ advanced tab/ and see if your enable this account is checked. Also see if your authentication is on password. Try a reboot as well.
On a bizarre note when my wife and I set up her Mini we still had a Gateway pc on the network. It had the same email address. Every couple of minutes Mail would ask for a password, drove us crazy...Just andFYI. Disconnected the Gateway and no more password requests.
This is set up asan Administrator account. Not sure if that makes a difference in password protection.

Keychain and password problems

I have an older macbook using OS X 10.8.4. I am having two different issues that might be related but probably not. The first issue is that my keychain is not prompting to save or saving the majority of my login/password information. I have gone to the Safari >preferences> auto login unchecked then rechecked the box to auto login but it has not solved the problem. Is there another step to take?
The other issue is that I was using lastpass to save information, I reset Safari and when I did my password to lastpass disappeared. Now I can't remember the password and it is not on my keychain. Is there another place the password could be? Is there a way to make the keychain remember all of your password/log in information?

Thanks for that, I deleted all references to keychains in /Library and logged back in, added a keychain for my username and all is now well.
However, I've just started using MS Entourage (as the Mail program was also freaking out like Safari) and it seems that when I tell this application to save my mail password to the Keychain, it throws a spanner in the works...
Might start a new thread on this one...

Keychain and passwords for FTP messed up

I cannot get my passwords to work properly anymore.
when I try to publish any changes I get a message Pop Up
Incorrect password for my "User Name " and server adress.
when I go to the site name on the left for Site Publishing Settings a password is there. I test Connection it works fine and says I can now publish.
I try publish site changes again it does not work. I get the same pop up as before, even when I enter the correct password in the box and uncheck save in keychain it still does not work.
Not only till I click off the save in Keychain box it works and publishes? I make another change Publish and it all works fine. Till I close down Iweb

Open Keychain Access (in the utilities folder) and look for the entry under Login/Passwords.
You can try selecting the entry and then choose Keychain First Aid from the Keychain Access dropdown menu.
Either that or delete the entry (or entries) and then reset it in iWeb Publishing Settings.

I can't understand apple teminology - what is the difference between a keychain and a password - why does my mac keep asking me to type in the keychain - I don't know what it is or when it was created!!!

A "keychain" is a secure database in which passwords are stored in an encrypted format to prevent unauthorized discovery of your passwords. Think of it like a bank safe deposit box in which you can safely store your passwords.
If you have a problem with your keychain then perhaps you have not changed the passwords correctly or need to repair your keychain. You might try:
Assuming that you are using a recent build of OS X, go to /Applications/Utilities and launch the app called Keychain Access. Go to the Window pulldown menu and select "Keychain First Aid". Enter your password, set the radio button to "Repair", and click "Start".

Open Sysem Preferences from your Apple () menu top left in your screen then select the Firewall tab.
Make sure the Firewall is turned off.

Try Resetting the PRAM

I reinstalled my mac os x, and anytime i try to update my software its asking me for an administrators name and password, i enter it and it comes back wrong, and that is the only one i have, i have been to keychain but it does not make any sense to me,

Stick the 10.6 disk into the computer and reboot holding the c or option key down, select the disk to boot from.
In the installer menu is a Utiltiies menu and a password reset.
If you don't remmember the name, reboot the computer holding the command and s keys down
a black screen with white type appears, when it's finished, dbackspace any extra ssss you have made and then type
ls /Users
(that's Larry, Sam, space, slash, Users)
and press return, a list of user names on the machine appears
type exit and reboot and use the 10.6 disk to reset your password

Add website and password to iCloud keychain

Is there a way to manually add a website and password to keychain? I signed up for an online bank, keychain established and saved a password but the actual login website URL is different so its not being recognized and filled-in by icloud keychain. I want to add the actual website login URL to keychain but do not see an option anywhere. Keychain does not ask me to save when i login either. Thanks.

This may help:
Check this Allow AutoFill box in Safari > Preferences > Passwords
Then navigate to the actual login page and manually add the user name and password.
Then the keychain should work.

One username and password not being added to keychain

I have entered a username and password for a webpage and answered yes when asked it I wanted this saved it to my keychain.
However I can not find the u/n and pass word in my keychain (Safari>Preferences>Passwords) and this u/n and pw is not shared with my other devices. All my other u/n and pw are in my keychain and are shared with all my other devices.
Can I manually add a u/n and pw to my keychain?

I did previously have "Private Browsing" selected and deselected that and that is when I could set up FF with my username and pw but could not on Wells Fargo. So, I did what you suggested and that was to delete cookies because that seemed like a good reason but alas, it still will not give me the option to set up the username/pw.
I would not be surprised if it is Wells Fargo, they are a bit of a pain. You cannot even save them in Bookmarks because I was told they are constantly making changes to their site and this stops the bookmark from working.

ICloud Keychain: username and password form on separate pages

I really like using iCloud Keychain. I am, however, unable to store a username and password for two web sites. Both sites use a separate page for username and password. It appears that Safari does not see the web form on each page. I have attempted to manually add the usernames and passwords to Keychain Access on my iMac, however, it had no effect. Note that I have also enabled the Safari options "Autofill usernames and passwords" and "Allow Autofill even for websites that request passwords not be saved."
Has anyone experienced Safari not showing a prompt to save usernames/passwords and found a solution?

II'd rather not disclose the financial institutions i do business with, but my bank and two mutual fund websites use separate pages for username and password. I chec around, and if you go to the Bank of America website, they do it as well. Keychain does not work on any of the three sites I use.

I checked for waiting downloads in the iTunes App (purple icon) on device. Sure enough, there was a stuck download. Deleting that item (swipe to delete) seems to have gotten downloads working again and (hopefully) banished the message.

Restoring old keychain accounts and passwords?

I had major folder problems with my system HD that were pretty much irrepairable with anything else other than Disk Warrior. After repairing directories with DW, my system HD didn't have a recognisable version of 10.4 on it. So I went ahead and carried out an 'archive and install' installation of a fresh copy of 10.4. I've reloaded my old Safari bookmarks no problem, but I'm having problems with my old keychain accounts and passwords. In my 'Previous Systems' folder after the archive and install, I went to ~/Library/keychains and couldn't find anything in there to throw into my new keychains folder... am I looking for the right file? Does the com.apple.keychainaccess.plist file in my home help at all? I tried using the keychain first aid on the keychain access .app but it was no help.
Please can you help? I have a rather large keychain list that I really really don't want to lose!

For those who are referring to this thread for the reason of the OP (Restore after Archive and Install), the keychain file that you want for Safari bookmarks is in your User file, so you need not freak out about not having backed it up. It is there in your Previous folder. You may have to do something tricky with the file permissions, but maybe not.
Here is what I did. I opened the current Users/YourUserName/Library/Keychains and right-clicked the login.keychain and made a copy of it. Then I moved the original to the trash. Then I copied the old login.keychain over from the Previous/Users/YourUserName/Library/Keychains. At some point I had to authenticate the action (moving the default login.keychain to the trash?).
This is such a relief to not have to re-enter all of my u/p's all over the place. I'd changed several of them since my last backup, so it's inspiration to backup more often.
For the record, restoring after an archive and install, mostly consists of dragging files from one folder to a similarly named folder in the new user folder. Sometimes there are subfolders or files that can not be overwritten (like this one), where you want to backup, delete, and copy, and sometimes you'll just want to let it keep the new one. Sometimes it is a new folder and you can just drag the folder to the new position as well. I haven't even gotten into the depths of working out all the kinks, but I'm impressed with how much has been recovered so far given that I thought I had to start over at one point. I'm going to get everything freshly backed up before re-installing 10.6.2--not to worry!
