Keychain Backup Cannot Be Restored

Hi all,
I've been using my MacBook Pro 15" since purchasing it in November, and of the various cool software features of OS X that compelled me to switch, one of them - Keychain - has certainly been a point of frustration.
I have yet to successfully restore a keychain backup to a useable state. I've followed Apple's instructions for backing up important files to the letter - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301239 - and yet my Keychain backups fail to work; though the entries show up in Keychain Access, my user name and password is never entered, though this information exists in - and therefore should be provided by my Keychain.
I've tried backing up and restoring without a reinstall of OS X, and I've tried backing up my Keychain, reinstalling OS X and then restoring my Keychain files (as per Apple's instructions), and I never seem to have any luck. Yes - the information is still there, and I'm able to use Keychain Access to look up the information and re-save it back to my Keychain (after which the newly saved Keychain items work!), but this seems to defeat half the purpose of backing up.
I could almost just save all of my login names and passwords in a Word or Excel file and store it in an encrypted disc image. Sure - it wouldn't be nearly as efficient, but if I have to manually recreate all of my Keychain items whenever I have to restore a backup, what's the point of Keychain?
Also odd is that I can save several website user names and passwords to my Keychain, and they'll work fine, listed as "Internet password"s in Keychain access. If I back up my Keychain, reinstall (clean - format and isntall) OS X and restore my backed up Keychain, in addition to my login and passwords no longer working in either Safari or Camino, all entries that used to be "Internet password"s in Keychain Access are now listed as "Web form..." something or other (though all other information seems to be the same (user and pass and URL info saved correctly).
Has anyone had this problem with Keychain? I've read an awful lot of negative stuff regarding the Keychain feature of OS X since I made the switch and startd having my own problems with it. Just wondering if anyone else out there shares in my specific frutstration.
I would love to just be able to back up my Keychain when I have to and know that if I ever need to restore it - with or without having performed a clean OS X reinstallation - that I can do so and that the back up will just pick up where I left off and that they'll just continue to work, transparently, without any tedious manual user intervention.
PS - I've tried using Keychain First Aid, I've tried deleting my keychain preferences file, I've tried reparing permissions, and on, and on, and on....none of these things seem to correct the problem.
It should also be known that I've tried backing up and restoring with multiple versions of 10.4.x - always within the same version - never across versions. Doesn't seem to make a difference.
15" MacBook Pro, 1GB, 120GB, ATI X1600 128MB Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi,
log shipping from SQL server 2005 to 2008 is not straight forward, you can not keep secondary database in standby mode alternative approach would be to have secondary database in norecovery mode.
But this is one way logship,  If you need to fail over to the standby server, you now have to swap the log shipping roles, but you can't then log ship back from the 2008 server to the 2005 server.
refer below link for steps, in RESTORE TRANSACTION LOG TAB you need to select
NO RECOVERY MODE.
Step By Step SQL Server Log Shipping

  • Time Machine backups cannot be restored to a new HDD

    Steps to reproduce:
    - do a fresh backup using Time Machine to a USB drive (I tried two separate USB drives to make sure it is not a drive problem)
    - install new HDD in your Mac (tried two brand new HDD's)
    - boot from OS X Snow Leopard DVD
    - select "Restore from Time Machine backup"
    The restore will fail after a while, the error reported is "cannot write files to CD"...
    I have been playing with this for about a week now and I think this is a systematic issue with Time Machine and OS X 10.6.4 - I did exactly the same procedure with 10.6.2 and had no issues.

    What did you select as the destination for the restore?
    Did you format the new drive properly?
    See #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for detailed instructions.

    It's not a general issue; if you search this forum, you won't find another such thread.
    You've either formatted the internal HD improperly; selected the wrong destination; excluded things like System folders from your backups; or there's something wrong with your Install disc or Superdrive, etc.
    Follow #14 carefully, including monitoring the installation. If it fails again, report back, with the last few lines of the log.

  • Why is it that Time Machine backups cannot be restored on different model Macs?

    Just bought a new mac mini and tried to restore the TM backup made on a 2012 MBP and it says that I am on a different model mac and therefore must use migration assistant. Migration assistant is the worst. Tomorrow I'm going to install one of my drives into my friends Macbook Pro and restore it in totality and then put the drive back into the mini and I am 100% sure that's going to work. I doubt anyone will be able to asnwer the question but if someone does I will appreciate it very much.

    Could you please elaborate on the differences between the verisons of  ML that run on the aforementioned models? Can't this be resolved by editing the boot EFI file?
    The differences are just hardware drivers and some updated applications (for example, Boot Camp Assistant and Disk Utility).
    This "special" OS X version includes the drivers for the hardware of your Mac mini that the "normal" version doesn't contain, so you will just make your Mac useless if you restore that backup. This will be solved with the next OS X update, when all Macs start using the same OS X version.
    I forgot to ask you: when does Setup Assistant tell you that you can't use that backup? After choosing the Time Machine drive?

  • ICloud Backup cannot begin, another device currently restoring...

    When I bought my iPhone 4S on launch day, everything went really well with my iCloud backing up my info/data/contacts, however, I am having trouble with it now. I turned off "iCloud Backup", but have since decided to turn it back on in order to use it again, but I am recieving this message when I attempt to "Back Up Now":
    "iCloud Backup cannot begin because another device is currently restoring from this backup. Try again later."
    I have waited over night and have tried again with no luck. I have also checked "Back up to iCloud" in iTunes, and that hasn't worked either. I've also tried deleting the backup through my iPhone AND through my Mac, but iCloud will not delete it.
    If anyone can help me figure out what is going on, or have experienced this same problem, please let me know what I can do!
    Thanks!
    (I've also done multiple hard resets, restored the entire iPhone, and have tried this while connected to WIFI and through a power source; Backing up works on my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4, just not my 4S)

    It happened to me too, It probably happend because your device was nacking itself up and was stopped in the middle of the process for some reason, So apple's server wasnt updated of the change and a flag still marks that the backup is being used.
    Try to change something in the backup, either create a new backup or change the existing one (Remove some things from it to change it) and save it
    it will inform the server that you have finished using the backup, and will enable you to restore from it.

    That error often indicates a hardware failure.Try restoring a few more times. If it consistently gives you that error, make an appointment at the genius bar to have it looked at.

  • IPhone 4 stuck in recovery mode, iTunes error message pops up saying cannot be restored...how do I go about this?

    Hi all..hoping someone can help me out with this.
    So I recently lost my iPhone 5, therefore I am going to use a friend's old iPhone 4 in the meantime. The iPhone 4 has been jailbroken, but I wanted to do a reset to clear the jailbreak as well as just clear all other data, so that I can just restore my own iCloud backup & use with my own data.
    However, the problem I am now faced with is that the phone is in recovery mode, and when I plug in the phone to my computer...I am given the options to click Restore. But after all the time it takes to update the software and supposedly doing its thing with "restoring" the phone....turns out no luck, i get an error message saying the phone cannot be restored. And now I pretty much can't do anything because I do not know how to do a reset of any sort to get out of this recovery mode.
    PLEASE HELP. first time losing phone, first time trying to figure out how to reset and get out of recovery mode. I just want to be able to reset and then restore with previous backup..
    I really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.
    *please ask any questions that you may need in order to help me solve this, since I am not exactly sure how to word some of these problems*

  • Does Time Machine still do incremental backups after a restore?

    Hi --
    We have a 500GB external iomega drive that just died and I have been working to restore it's files from Time Machine onto a new 500 GB drive. I formatted the new drive and gave it the same name as the old one, and it looks like Time Machine was smart enough to do the right thing and restore the files to their original locations.
    However, this morning -- within 24 hours of completing the restore -- we see an error message from TM saying it is out of space and it cannot perform a backup. It claims that about 450 GB are needed, which is about the same size of all the files we restored. Is it possible that once backup files are restored they are not longer considered backed up, and thus Time Machine immediately tries to back up all the files it just restored? I assumed it would still do incremental backups but recognize that restored files do not need to be backed up again unless / until they are edited...
    Thanks,
    Ram on

    That's quite unusual. Normally it does a full backup immediately: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338

  • Have bookmarks on usb key backup, cannot figure out how to open firefox (already installed) to import the book marks .

    I know how to take bookmarks from Windows 7 (firefox) and put them into another windows machine. I know to import them into Ubuntu, I have to open up firefox in Ubuntu (already pre-installed). I just cant find any bookmarks list in the Ubuntu firefox list that I can access, so I cannot import them using "import" (which everyone says glibbly) to get them in. How do I access bookmarks in the pre-installed firefox.

    Hello,
    You'll need to transfer the bookmarks backup file from your Windows PC to your Ubuntu PC - perhaps by emailing it to yourself or copying it onto a USB stick. Once you've done this, here's how to copy (import) them into Firefox on Ubuntu:
    # Click the Bookmarks button [[Image:Bookmarks-29]] and select ''Show All Bookmarks''.
    # At the top of the Library window, click on ''Import and Backup'' and select ''Restore''.
    # Click ''Choose file''
    # In the new window that appears, browse for the bookmarks file, select it and click ''Open''
    # Your bookmarks from Windows should now be imported.
    For more information, see the [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]] article.
    Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • I tried to instal 10.8.3 to my MBP and it crashed. I then tried to restore from Time machine but when it is about 50% through a message comes up "the files cannot be restored"

    I tried to instal 10.8.3 to my MBP and it crashed. I then tried to restore from Time machine but when it is about 50% through a message comes up "the files cannot be restored" Can anyone help me to get out of this mess?

    Back up all data.
    Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • I receive this error message "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "backup" cannot be found.

    I performed a clean install of Lion, then upgraded to Yosemite. Now, i am trying to restore files and programs from my backup in my time capsule but when i connect to the backup folder i receive this error message "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "backup" cannot be found.
    I previously had mavericks installed and was able to backup and restore just fine. I do believe that within the time since i last performed a backup or restore there was an update for the time capsule that i ran using my iPhone. I need a solution to this issue.

    Yosemite can take a very long time to index the backup.. and it seems to be impossible in my own testing to get back beyond the latest one.
    If you cannot manage a migration.. which I guess is what you are trying to do.. see if you can do a full restore to a USB drive plugged into your computer.

    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school enviroment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

    When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.
