Keychain "****"  - corruption with no repair

Hello,
I see another keychain question ongoing but did not want to pile on with my similar but seemingly more devastating question.   I  have a Mac Book Air that I have been using for only a few weeks.  This morning it suddenly started asking for all kinds of passwords related to keychain.   The login password did not work and the system was/is increasingly unstable to the point where I cannot even login now.   I get prompted with "OSX wants to use the "Local Items" keychain, which appears as I am trying to type my login password.
Prior to this any attempt to verify showed that there was no password for Local Items and attempts to repair all failed.
I am really stuck here and looking for advice as to how to get back into operation.  I have time machine but have not backed up yet as I am not even on month into using the machine.   In that context if the best solution is a complete reinstall it will be a pain but not end of the world.
I thought it would be better to ask first as I am hoping there is a way to recover without that extra overhead.
Thanks
Scott

So my last act prior to leaving for the evening was to try to do a repair from within the KeyChain utility.  I watched it "beach ball" for 5 min or more before leaving assuming that it was going to result in nothing helpful.   When I came back 4  hours later some task had completed and I was being asked to reset a password - the local one I believe.
It would not take the same password but did eventually take a modified one.   The windows that were constantly popping up asking for different permissions to use "key chain" then stopped reappearing and by outward appearances I am close to normal.   My icloud account does not want to authenticate however and every action that has anything to do with accessing an account of any kind on machine is taking a ridiculous amount of time.
I have written this whole message on my Mac in the time that it is taking icloud to sign out.
So something is clearly not right still.  The repair function for KeyChain runs quickly again and reports nothing amis, however this is not the same machine it was this AM.   My next step will be to delete anything to do with keychain stored information ( any tips?) and start over.  Failing that I will be reinstalling the OS using a clean install.
Thanks for all the help so far.

I'm running a mac pro dual core 2 2.66 intel xeon processor, with 16GB of memory  My operating system is  10.6,8

So you should have already made a couple backups, always have a spare bootable system drive, and in some cases zero it all - takes couple hours, and not use it except as spare extra backup.
Getting files off your drive now but don't use it,, install OS to a new drive (pull the old one in fact temporary) and you may want to use checksum on all file copies, and for any files not on backup sets try best you can and if you still need help, then turn to Data Rescue 3.
I would not use a DVD to do repairs, even if it is 10.6.0 or 10.6.3. I would use a clean small system drive with 10.6.8 (takes less than 30GB, even down to 16GB if careful) "emergency boot drive" used only for system maintenance and repairs.
And if you had Lion, you don't, but, I would use Recovery Mode AND have that also cloned to another drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC).

  • Keychain Corruption (and printing?)

Having just survived the corruption of a keychain, I feel the need to print all the passwords to then store in our safety deposit box.
Is there any way to print all the passwords?
    {PS: If you have two macs which are synced via .mac, make a copy of the other machine's keychain, then copy it to your injured Mac.}
G5 dual core, PB12   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Every one since the 128K 1984 Macintosh

Is there any way to print all the passwords?
Not directly. However, I have a simple AppleScript which I use to generate a list containing the name, account username, and password for each key in my login.keychain. I use this list as a backup for all generic and webpage keys. This works without a problem when run in Script Editor, prompting with a dialog box for approval to open each key, and continuing on to the end, producing the desired list, and saving it to the Desktop. Note that you'll have to manually edit the list to get rid of extraneous characters. i never bothered to script that part. I usually clean it up manually, reformat it by putting tabs between the categories, and copy it into excel where I can sort it. Enjoy.
    <script>
    set osXKeychainScriptingPath to ¬
(path to scripting additions from system domain as Unicode text) ¬
    & "Keychain Scripting.app:" -- one line
    set theSecuridPIN to {}
tell application "Keychain Scripting" to launch
tell application "Keychain Access" to launch
using terms from application "Keychain Scripting"
    tell application osXKeychainScriptingPath
set KeyList to every Internet key of current keychain
    repeat with aKey in KeyList
set theSecuridPIN to theSecuridPIN & (name of aKey) & ¬
(account of aKey) & (password of aKey) & return
    end repeat
    end tell
    end using terms from
tell application "Keychain Scripting" to quit
tell application "Keychain Access" to quit
    tell application "Finder"
open for access file (((path to desktop folder) as text) & "Passwords") with write permission
    set theFile to result
    write theSecuridPIN to theFile
    close access theFile
    end tell
    <end script>
Cut and paste it into Script Editor, compile it, and run it. I always select the right-hand option in the dialog boxes; either allow always or allow once, whichever is not grayed out.

Ever since I updated what looked like iTunes 10.6.1 my computer has been corrupted with Malware, which has filled up all available space on my hard drive.  What do I do to get rid of the Malware?

First, reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • [SOLVED] Graphic Corruption with 3D and Wine 1.3.8 + Catalyst 10.11

    Hello!
I'm getting graphic corruption with 3D games on my Arch Linux configuration using Wine and Catalyst. Tried World of Warcraft (also with opengl rendering) and Guild Wars - graphics look stretched and teared.
    Using ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I get same problem with guildwars in fullscreen when entering character select. I have to ctrl-alt-F1 to tty then back to get rid of the garbled graphics. Then my characters vanishes except for their armor/effects. Going into windowed mode stops the garbling of the graphics but the bodyless avatars remain. There is one error stands out in wine output but can't find anything specific to this error that helps.

  • After updating to adobe  reader 11.0.3 my registry was corrupted with a gapi32.dll missing error. I

after updating to adobe  reader 11.0.3 my registry was corrupted with a gapi32.dll missing error. It was not missing and was conflicting with outlook as this dll file is a common file. The only way I could fix the problem was to do a system restore back to when I had the 11.0.2 version and everything will work with that. You have a problem with version 11.0.3 installation. The same thing happened on 3 computers so I know it is this new version of adobe reader which is the problem.

It would be great, if you could provide us with the following details:
    1. The OS you are working on.
    2. The version of MS Office installed on your machine.
    3. A screenshot of the error message along with the scenario in which the same is displayed.
    4. How exactly did you go about updating Reader 11.0.02 to 11.0.03. Was it via the updater mechanism or by downloading the patch from the Adobe site.
Also, it would be great if you could let us know if there was any other Windows or Antivirus related updates applied on your machine in the same timeframe as the Reader update.

  • Keychains bug with german umlaut

Recently i found a strange behavior within keychains. If the name of a keychain contains a german umlaut e.g "geschäftlich" i'm not able to activate sync keychain with .mac. i set the marker at "sync keychain with .mac" and click save. When i open the keychain settings again the dotmac setting is again NOT enabled and the keychains don't get synced.
If i make a new keychain "geschaeftlich" which contains the same items as "geschäftlich" everything works fine.
As far as i remember keychains worked with "umlaute" until at least 10.5.2

Probably one of many issues with the transition to MobileMe. I'd file a bug.

  • Strange occurrence with permission repair/disk utility

Aloha all, I'm having a strange problem with disk repair and wonder if anyone else has seen this and/or how to fix it. If I have my external HD used for Time Machine turned off and open Disk Utility to check/repair permissions, none of my drives show up in the column on the left, and Disk Utility just hangs with the little spinning symbol. I let this run for over an hour before I had to force quit it. If however the external drive is on, everything works as normal in Disk Utility. Anyone know what might be causing this? I often eject and turn off my external drives at night, after I turn off Time Machine. I don't really need it backing up every hour during the night, and the drive is getting full so every little bit of space helps. I have deleted the permission file on my main drive and that didn't help. I'd like to be able to turn the external drive off and still be able to use disk repair. Mahalo for any tips, suggestions, or info you can provide. JB

  • RAW files look corrupted with color streaking during import

During import in Lightroom about 25% of my files look corrupted (with color streaks, etc.). The RAW images upload perfectly in iPhoto on the same computer but for some reason will become corrupted in Lightroom. I am able to delete the corrupted images in the LR Library and reload them with about a 50% success rate. I've tried different memory cards, cf importers, etc. Only an issue in LR. Sometimes they export with the streaking and other times they export perfectly fine. Even if they export fine it makes it impossible to edit in LR. Below is an example of how the image appears. Any answers?

Raw files have a camera-embedded JPG.
I would guess the files are corrupt, LR is showing you this corruption, while other programs are only interpreting the JPG and hiding the corruption.

  • Cannot boot from Windows 8 notebook - Error: Operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair

    Hi all,
I have searched through forums, but could not find the solution to my problem:
I have a notebook ASUS with Windows 8 preinstalled.
Yesterday I was doing some housecleaning jobs with some freeware tool (don't remember the name).
Afterwards I have not been able to boot into Windows.
CURRENT SITUATION: When I switch the PC on, after the welcome screen of ASUS and Windows 8 the system goes to a blank screen (no cursor, no mouse, CTRL+ALT+DEL not working).
On next reboot, it does not start automatically the Recovery/Repair procedure and goes through the same steps again. It's not a loop, it just hangs.
Looking into c:\windows\system32\LogFiles\Srt\srttrail.txt I see the following error message at the bottom of the file on the time of my last boot attempt: "Operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair"
I tried several things without success, so now I want to solve the problems one by one and first thing is to understand what might be causing the "Operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair" error and how it can be solved.
    Thanks for reading

    Hi,
    Any update here?
I agreed with the others.  First, if we have any backup available to restore Windows 8.1, we may take use of that.
If we don't have any backup available, we'd better contact the manufacturer side for a deeper help.
Or as Janek Fehn suggested, make a clean install of Windows 8, then update to Windows 8.1 again.

  • Photo corrupted with Green flashes in iPhoto

    Hi.
I have an Imac late 2006 (Intel Core 2 Duo).
I have updated it with Mac Box (SLiLife09iWork).
All works fine, but... when I try to modify a photo using iPhoto (for example zooming or rotating it), the image (and only the image, not the rest of iphoto window) is corrupted with green blocks. If I continue to update the photo (rotating it or zooming) the image is not corrupted anymore.
    any idea about this fault?
    Could be the graphic card?
Same problem also using iMovie HD as I try to update a photo.
    Thanks for your help
    Roberto

    Roberto
I have noticed the same thing. I ran the hardware test and it didn't find any hardware problems, which is what I expected since my iMac is only 6 months old.
I didn't start having this problem until updating to the latest iPhoto update. I'm running iLife 09 with all the updates applied.
The only time I get the green blocks is when I am in edit mode. Exiting the edit and going back into it gets rid of the problem. I feel this has to be an iPhoto issue. Fortunately, it doesn't happen that often to make iPhoto unusable.
