Keychain Gone, Can't Repair, In Despair

I have a ministack HD (#3) that I stupidly changed the permissions to read & write, etc. under Show Info. Hours later the ministack was no longer showing up on Finder. So I rebooted and have this issue: NO keychain found, boots as if I just bought the system: I can't get Safari past the "Welcome to Apple" start page, the browser hangs.
I have run Disk Utility to "Repair Permissions" on the main HD. DU sees my 3rd HD but it still doesn't show up in Finder. I have run Disk Warrior to repair permissions on the boot drive and the problem remains. I can't even create a new Keychain to see if I can get to any of my files. I can see all my old files and apps under Finder but can't get anything to open due to Keychain issue.
Keychain Access issues:
Checking keychain configuration for Mark Richardson (user ID=501)
Home directory is /Users/markrichardson
Checked login keychain
*Error: login keychain not found*
*Unable to get infor for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain, reason: Permission denied.*Then I tried REPAIR:
*Error: login keychain not found*
*Repair terminated unexpectantly*
I have tried opening BACKUP and clicking on the files - nothing!
I booted from the OSX disk and tried Safe mode with no results.
Thanks for any directions........
Mark Richardson

Still hoping for assistance out there............
I tried to reinstall OS X 10.4.0 from disk but I get "there was an error trying to install, try again" so still stuck in 10.3.9 that is screwed up.
Can't get System Pref, Safari and any iLife apps to open. Norton and other apps don't work either although they show up on my directory in Folder. I "tricked" Mail into opening new mail but no saved folders & mail to be found. iCal opens but not with my previous listings.
I did find my Backup files on HD 2 and have been trying to restore Personal Settings, System Settings & Documents for since last night. The status bar goes about 60%, Norton scans the folder and states I don't have access to the folder. If I click CLOSE, the Restore status bar resets and starts over. I am now leaving the scans alone (20 open dialog boxes referencing different files) and am now at 70% done.
I'm just shy of calling a pay per incident with Apple but will try calling the Apple store bar and hope an expert can help if I don't hear anything to this post by Monday.

  • How can I repair corrupted keychain?

I inadvertantly erased my keychain settings while installing a new airport.  I restored what I could.  Now I am asked to sign-in my passwrod every time I try to open Calendar or sync my MobileMe (not yet read for Lion and Cloud), and often when I open Safari and many other apps associated with the OS.
I have tried repairing the keychain, repairing permissions and adding what appear to be missing app names and commands into restored keychains.  Nothing works.
I have Time Machine back-ups using 10.6.8 that worked well before I appliied my fat thumbs to keychains.
Is there any way I can import prior keychain commands to overwrite my current keychains?  What other kernals or commands do I need to chainge in the Library or Preferences to operate keychains properly?
    Thanks.

Did you try using KeyChain first aid to repair, open the KeyChain app in the utilities folder and then click on the KeyChain menu item the select KeyChain First Aid, Put in your password and click the repair button on the right then click start.

  • Disk Utility Can't Repair Permissions - A different one

I'm posting this separately from the previous thread I saw somewhere, because my situation is a little different.
I did the software updates on my G4 15" Aluminum this morning: Battery thing, iTunes, QuickTime and Safari. Security Update? FUGGETTABOUT. Went through THAT nightmare weeks ago.
Anyways: I can't repair permissions any way at all: not in Disk Utility, not in ONYX, and Not from Disk Utility from the Boot CD.
    MY error reads:
"Disk Utility Internal Error: Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility"
When I do THAT, I get the ever-so-encouraging warning, essentially telling me that I've been given a bum steer in the previous alert: "Operations Still in Progress. Disk Utility still has some operations in progress. Quitting in the middle of some operations can leave a disk non-operational. Are you sure you want to quit?"
Other details: Ran Disk Verify and Disk Repair from the boot CD and it was claimed that the disk was repaired and ok. Zapped the PRAM. Other problems are that Keychain Access just freezes when I ask to see a password. Never gets to the point of even asking for my administrative password.
Originally, too, just as when I had problems with the Security Update, I couldn't join my Airport Network, but for no apparent reason, after a couple of reboots after zapping the PRAM, I managed to connect.
This is the second time in less than a month that a machine which has always operated flawlessly has gone south after downloading Software Updates from Apple in good faith. I hardly think I should be expected to purchase third-party disk utilities to fix this myself.

Thank you, JRSY Man SO much. Just for the sake of anyone seeing THIS forum, go to the one JRSY MAN linked in the second post of this thread. There are about a hundred posts from people with this problem, and a lot of hair-pulling, but someone has come up with a temporary solution, and it finally worked for me.
There is an incompatibility in the stupid iTunes update, that creates all kinds of havoc.
    Thanks again.

  • On plugging my iPod to the iMac, all the songs got deleted on the iPod. Now it doesn't sync to iTunes and it shows that 'mac os can't repair the device'. How can I get my iPod to start functioning normally again? Please help!

Hey! I plugged my 80 gb ipod classic to my imac, but had to switch it off when itunes hung. The ipod wasn't switching on , and when it did, all the data, including all my songs were deleted. Now, when I try syncing it to the mac, it doesn't connect to the itunes and I keep getting an alert saying ' Mac osx can't repair the device'. Now, althought all the data is gone, the ipod still shows 30 gb free. What will happen if I partiton my ipod? How do I get it to start functioning again? Please help!

Try a low level reformat of the iPod's hard drive to possibly try and repair some of its damage. Use the instructions in this article to walk you through the process.

  • Disk Utility can't repair TM backup disk

    Hello all
Recently, my external backup disk (a 750 GB WD My Passport) that I use with Time Machine has been acting up. At first, it wouldn't show up on the desktop, but was being recognized in Disk Utility (with the "Time Machine Backup" partition greyed out). After multiple restarts and unplugging/replugging the hard drive, I finally got to be properly recognized, i.e. it showed up on the desktop with the proper Time Machine hard drive icon. So I thought the problem was gone and started a routine backup. However, Time Machine returned an error:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
I search the forums, and followed the advice here: http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/C10.html
I tried repairing the disk, but DU couldn't repair it:

So now I'm still following the advice on the above mentioned page by posting on here. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I am using a 2010 15in 2.66 i7 MBP, if that makes a difference, although my guess is the problem's with the harddrive itself. I think there may have been one time about a month ago when Time Machine stopped responding (or something like that) which forced me to pull out the harddrive, possibly corrupting the data. But I'm not sure, and I do recall making at least one successful backup after that. Well, actually TM confirms this: "Latest successful backup: 5/27/11 at 11:51 PM". So I have no idea what's going on. Again, any help would be appreciated.

You can't tell what's corrupted or where.  Time Machine backups have a very complex structure, all linked together.  So, you can often do new backups, or restore individual items, or even entire backups, as long as you don't stumble over the damage.
There's a chance a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, such as Disk Warrior, can repair them.  It's about $100, and probably a good investment for the future, but there's no guarantee it can fix them.
If not, or if you don't want to spend the money, your only option is to erase the disk and let Time Machine start fresh.
It sounds like you may have other data on it; if that's in the same partition, that's not a good idea.  This is a good time to copy the data off, erase the disk, and make 2 (or more) partitions on it, so Time Machine has its own, exclusive space.  See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details and instructions.

  • I recently downloaded is x mountain lion and while it finished it erased all my data, some of which I need. When using disk utility I found my old data but it says corrupted. I can't repair and while restoring the error code 32 Broken Pipe appears. Help?

My data I need is on my computer but it needs to be repaired but can't and when I try to restore it/back it up it ends abruptly with error code 32 broken pipe.
It was damaged while installing os x mountain lion and I found my data on disk repair (utility)

Sounds like your hard drive is badly corrupted, likely due to problems that were already there when you started trying to install Mountain Lion. The problem is, if you don't have any backups already, you may not be able to recover all your data from this state. Do you have backups of that data already?
If not, I assume when you say that "it needs to be repaired but can't," you mean that Disk Utility tells you there is a problem with the disk, but that it is unable to repair it? If so, you can try repairing the drive using DiskWarrior, which can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. That may give you access to your data again, but may not.
Also, it's important to understand that if your data is not backed up, everything you do with the computer runs the risk of overwriting or corrupting that data. You may want to go straight to trying to recover your data. See Recovering deleted files.
Regarding the error code, if you're trying to back up the drive using Disk Utility's Restore tab, note that that is often not successful when the drive you're trying to back up is corrupt.
Once the situation is resolved - either because you have backups, are able to recover your data files or are forced to accept that they are gone permanently - you will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system and all your apps from scratch.

  • I dropped my ipod5 on a stone table (really hard) and the color (little part) came off! It's not a big problem but I just got it not long time ago. Can Apple repaire it? Will it be free? P.s. That part it's like 1mmX1mm not big, but I just want to know.

Like I say I'm the title... A little part "colour" on my iPod5 came off after I dropped my iPod on a stone table.
I just want to know that can Apple repair it or it doesn't count on the guarantee? It's not a big problem but I just got it few month ago...It's brand new! Do that's why I'm curious..:) and if they can repair... Will it gonna be free?

When you get your iPod repaired / replaced... do yourself a favor, spend a few more bucks and but a case, like a Lifeproof or Griffin Survivor. Both cover the entire iPod and offer protection against drops and falls, weather, sand, dust, etc. and will at least minimize if not prevent damage to your iPod.  Good luck.

No way around this. Your phone has to be restored using a computer running iTunes. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

    That is correct.

Becasue this has never been a feature of iphone/ipod/ipad.  There is nothing to repair.

  • Disk utility can't repair disk (1 partition) on external hard drive

I've search here some to try to find the answer to my scenario, but I really don't understand how Disk Utility got involved in my external hard drive to begin with, so here's my question.
I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research.
I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'.  And it needs to be reformatted.  It's become a read only disk.  When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question.  I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969!  These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure.  Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state!
Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive?  And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.
    Thanks, Sandy

I don't back them up.  There isn't much on them, besides the one I save video files too, but those are 2-3 min snippets of school events, that are just uploaded to youtube without any editing (like titles, fade ins, etc.) through iMovie. All those vid's are on original tapes I have.
The partition that is giving me problems, I do have most of that on my iMac's hard drive, just not as organized.  I guess it's just seeming overwhelming to re-created those files into the same file structure on my iMac, but I think it could be done.
I'm still not sure why my brother had me do the partitions like this.  In the past I had just two partitions, one for the back up and the other for random stuff that I didn't want to take up space on my iMac.

The batterys the ipods come with are very sensetive somtimes they dont react right to the first couple of charges. Try fully charging it and then leaving it on until its completely drained a few times. If that doesnt work it might be a lemon.

  • My iPhone 5 screen smashed and apple did not repair it a phone shop did and now 6 month on my phone has completely broke  can apple repair it if I paid the cost of the bill

MY iPhone 5 screen smashed ages ago and I got a normal phone shop to repair it and that was 6 month ago my battery and the mother board is broken can apple repair this if I was to pay the bill and not asking them to cover anything

No. By having an unauthorized service shop open your phone you have forefited ALL service (both in and out of warranty) from Apple. Apple will never again touch that phone. Take it to the same "shop" that repaired it before.

  • Can I repair an OnLocation CS5.5 for Mac MOV file that was corrupted by a crash?

    Hi,
I have a 16Gb MOV file from OnLocation CS5.5 for Mac that has been corrupted. The program froze and then crashed mid record and the file is now unusable. Is there any way that the file can be repaired or the video footage recovered?
    Thanks,
    Larry

I believe it's a DV file in a MOV container but I'm not certain since OnLocation for Mac gives no options for configuring the codec etc.
Looking at posts about the windows version in seems that it uses a dummy header and replaces it with the real thing when you stop the recording. I was wondering if the Mac version does something similar and if it does an the header from a working file be transplanted across somehow.
    Thanks,
    L
