Keychain is killing me!

I had an increasingly recurring request from keychain to type in a password every time I opened safari. I found keychain via spotlight and deleted the keychain that seemed to be causing the problem. I got frustrated and didn't really know what I was doing, I was just hoping that password prompt would go away. No I cannot access my mobileme via iPhoto (to upload photos onto mobile me). To be honest, I'm not real clear on the purpose of keychain anyway and I'm not really concerned with security breaches, at least for now. I just want to be able to work with mobile me and iPhoto and not have issues with keychain. Any ideas?

  • KeyChain has gone mad.

hi, help. i have two mac's updated to 10.6, the macBook is doing fine but the MacPro is having issues. Keychain starts up works. (i used to have to type the password in but now it's auto) BUT... about ten mins into work, suddenly it stops working and asks for the password, which it promptly rejects. (yep i know the password) so suddenly i have windows everywhere demanding it.
so far i've fixed permissions (nothing)
    first aided keychain (nothing)
killed all the .mac keychain items (nothing)
tried to change the keychains password (rejected)
    help... its driving me mad...
    cheers

Babowa has offered a solution. The reason Apple is not supporting you unless you pay is because you opted to not get AppleCare which would have extended the warranty to 3 years and also provided 3 years of telephone support. Unfortunately you have to get AppleCare within the original 1 year warranty period, let it go beyond that and you are self insuring.
Sorry to hear you dissatisfied though. I think if you spend a little time with Mavericks you will find it stable and accommodating. Is it possible you may need a little more training or education on Mavericks? If so, there are many resources available including Apple Store classes, courses  on-line, community colleges and of course books at the local bookstore.

  • How to use Keychain for multiple users on one computer?

I have a new Macbook Pro with Yosemite.  I just moved over from PC for my work computer and the Keychain thing is killing me!  I am a social media consultant so I manage multiple accounts for multiple clients.  I need a way to log in and out as them on many different platforms.  The reality is that I am the only user but I log in and out of different things as if this was a public computer with multiple users.
PC allowed me a drop-down option with each login.  For example the email box could be clicked and then I could select the client email that I needed to fill in.  The password would then auto-populate.  Is there any setting I can change to make this happen on a Macbook? I have been logging in, deleting the info in Keychain, then logging in for the next client, delete...etc.
Most password managers don't work because of this same problem.  Please don't recommend a password manager app unless it can handle logging in and out of (for example)10 different LinkedIn profiles.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Time Machine, Time Capsule, Keychain! I am totally lost!

    Hi,
I desperately need some help here! I had my Time Machine setup correctly for a while and have been doing manual backups to Time Capsule without any issues until recently, my backup failed!
The first error I get from Time Machine is:
    ===
    Time Machine Error
The network backup volume could not be mounted because there was a problem with the network username or password.
Open system preferences and choose time machine then re-select the Time Machine backup destination to enter the correct username and password.
    ===
I went to the preferences and selected change disk and re-selected my TC. I was prompted for a password and I entered the correct one. Now I get another error:
    ===
Keychain error -25299 occurred while created a system keycahin entry for the username "*" and URL "afp://**@***.local/**"
You can try using the keychain Access Utility to edit or repair your system keychain.
    ===
After searching the forums, here is what I did so far without any different outcome:
1- Did keychain first aid scan and repair (tested - same errors)
2- double checked all password files related to TC in system and login (tested - same errors)
3- Deleted all password entries related to TC & Network drive from Key Chain to recreate them automatically again (tested - same errors)
4- Reconfigured Airport and TC and changed device pass to disk pass (tested - same errors)
I should also mention that the TC mounts as a disk through the finder without any problems. Only when it is mounted in the finder TM is able to pick it up and display the blue disk icon, but still same errors and backup fails.
    What do I do now?
Will I loose all my previous TM data?
Can I get TM to work again and continue where the last TM backup left off? Or do I need to backup my machine completely again?
It doesn't make any sense that an error like this could happen so easily! It kills the purpose of TM!
Any help would be appreciated ...

Thanks Bob & tomvs for your quick replies. I tried both solutions but no change. I also tried changing the TC name so new password items will be created in the keychain, no change.
If I dont get any new suggestions or solutions, I might as well try resetting my keychain! but I dont know if I will lose my passwords and security notes if I do! But I think it leaves a copy of it somewhere, right?
by the way, after I changed the TC name, all password entries were successfully created in KC, or thats at least what it seams to me.
    any ideas?

  • Help Please my Keychain Login keeps popping up and refusing my password.

I don't normally have a login password on boot up but I have not used the login for so long I've forgotten my password.
OK so I used the MacBook 13 Install Disk and reset the password to something more memorable.
Then it advised me to synchronize this with the Keychain Password which I knew nothing about.
So I put in the same password in the keychain password box.
Now when I boot up I get a password box and my user name every time (I'd like to switch that off as I don't need a password, I'm the only user and nobody will steal this MacBook)
But even when I login with my new password, the Keychain Password box keeps popping up and asking for the pass. I type in the one I had set and it tells me that's incorrect. So the box pops up again and again.
Next it came up every time I tried to send or receive email and asked me to log the email password into the Keychain list as well so I did place a tick in that box. But still the Keychain keeps coming up.
Can I switch off all the BootUp adminstrator password boxes so it goes the way it used to when I first got it? Also can I kill off the Keychain thing as it has 18 entries in it that maybe can be scrapped. They're all my chat passwords and email server ones in the list.
I tried a Keychain Verify and Repair in the Applications Utilities and it says all is checking out fine yet it still won't accept what I type in the password box for Keychain. I'm only using a 7 letter password.
Can anyone solve this for me if I follow the list of instructions on how to turn all this password thing off? Hope so.
    Thanks
    Plado

    Tutorial: Keychain issues; resolving
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password.
This can be accomplished via the following process:
Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities
Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
    Click the "First Aid" tab
Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
    Close the Preferences window
Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
    Enter your username and password
    Click the "Repair" button
Another option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible.
This can be accomplished as follows:
Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting "New Keychain"
You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
    First, enable root user.
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, Keychain may be to blame.
For example, it appears that in some cases, failures in .Mac synchronization transfers are linked to issues with Keychain.
If you are having problems synchronizing data with .Mac servers, you may want to try the following process:
Open System Preferences and access the .Mac pane
    Click the "Sync" tab
Uncheck the "Synchronize with .Mac" checkbox
    Close System Preferences
Re-open System Preferences and repeat steps 1 and 2
Re-check the "Synchronize with .Mac" checkbox
If the above process does not re-allow synchronization, you may need to leave Keychain synchronization turned off in the "Sync" tab of the .Mac System Preferences pane.
The above comes from an article published on MacFixit.com.

  • Possible / how to completely disable Keychain??

    Hi,
I know Keychain has its fans, though I suspect most of them don't have to use it in a corporate environment, where AD users have to change passwords every month. It drives our users nuts (and me!).
I know they only have to go into Keychain Access and reset it, and I've explained to them how to do that countless times, but they still get tied into knots with it. Far better for them to just re-enter their password for each network connection (only one in our case, so no great hassle).
Don't want any advice on 'how best to use the Keychain', or to be told how wonderful it is. I simply want to banish it from our systems completely, for ever and ever (Amen!). Is this possible (short of screwing up the machine)?
    Any help most welcome thanks.
I've already searched around but can find nothing about how to kill the thing. Does anyone else hate Keychain as much as me?

    Hi, Jack.
By "AD" I presume you mean Active Directory.
AFAIK, you can't:• For starters, some applications, like Mail, Safari, and others are "Keychain-aware" and depend on the the keychain and Keychain Services for saving and retrieving account and password info. It's also involved in saving certificates. Remove keychain and such apps are likely to break.
    • Second, it's a core part of the OS, specifically Mac OS X Security Services.I see your options as follows:
    1. You may want to see if there's a way to configure AD so it does not use the Keychain. However, this means users will have to enter their passwords every time unless AD provides some other secure method for saving them.
    2. You have an educational problem here, not a technical problem. Create a tutorial for them, including screen shots, showing them how to update the password. Define a Test User to use in the illustrations so you don't have to use your own account. Then given everyone a copy and place it on one of your servers so folks can download the tutorial when needed.
    Good luck!

  • Safari and Keychain problem

    Hi every one,
I killed my safari. I was trying to connect to my university's wireless WPA Enterprise network and my ibook would not recognize the certificate. I tried a lot of different things, and I finally decided to get rid of all of my keychains and start all over again... big mistake! I went to HD/Library/Keychains and erased the two files that were there. Ever since, I get the message: 'safari can't open... because it couldn't establish a secure connection to the server.' My remedy was to get Firefox BUT now I can't export pictures to my .mac webpage or use iSinc. I would really appreciate your help to either 1) fix safari, or 2)find an alternative way to export pictures to the web,
    Thanks in advance,

Yes, connecting to the Uni.net is a different post in a different forum. Try this one. Like to help but I don't have any experience with that particular area.
    Re: Installing Safari:
You can install a new version by extracting it from your Installer DVD. To do this you'll need a copy of Pacifist.
After downloading Pacifist, open the app. Instructions for extracting package contents on the Installer DVD are pretty straight forward. Next load your Installer DVD. When it's open in your Finder, go back to Pacifist and extract the Safari package from the Installer DVD.
Before you install Safari make sure you:
    Trash the existing Safari application
Trash the Safari.pkg file found in your /library/receipts folder
Move your existing Safari bookmarks and history files, plus your Icon folder (all found in your Safari folder - ~/library/safari folder) to your desktop.
Install Safari by clicking on the extracted installer. Once installed, go to Software Update and update Safari (I'm assuming the OS will determine whether the new copy of Safari is up to date). If it doesn't, you'll have to reinstall 10.3.9. The reinstall is pretty straight forward.
    Restart your system.
Now, move your bookmarks, history and Icon folder from your desktop back into the Safari Folder writing over the new files created by Safari during the installation.
With either the Software Update, or 10.3.9 approach, make sure you repair permissions using Disk Utility (Utility folder) once you are finished and before you start up Safari for the first time.
    Please post back with results.

  • "Where is Keychain Scripting?" Mountain Lion edition

This came back to haunt me from the Lion days.
I launch the newly renamed Contacts app, and within a few seconds a "Choose Application" dialog with the caption "Where is Keychain Scripting?" pops up. But this time, nothing is clickable - I get a Spinning Beachball of Death that forces me to kill Contacts.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

After removing the contents of folder "/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/" the problem seems to have disappeared. I had a bunch of old things in there that I suppose aren't supported anymore.
This seems to have fixed it!

  • Keychain loop corruption

    Hi,
I am administrator for 1,000 laptops at a school.  Since Apple abandoned Snow Leopard, I have noticed an annoying glitch in the keychain folder. This NEVER occurred in Snow Leopard, only in the OS's since (Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks). Here is the scenario:
Students must authenticate onto the local wireless network
After authentication, they must repeat the process to allow proxy access to the internet.
All students are issued a digitally rights managed text book. This can only be opened using Adobe Reader, nothing else. They must be on the internet to enter the user name and password for the digital rights.
They're students and will make mistakes. They sometimes try to open the textbook without loggin onto 1. the local network and 2. the proxy access to the internet. What happens is a nightmare to fix: very time consuming.
(This example is a small one. I've seen keychain folders with over 17,000 keychain corruptions (login.keychain.sb-[gibberish])!!!
Why is this occurring? To fix it, I have to trash the entire contents of the folder (User/Library/Keychains), forcing the user to enter all passwords all over again. I hope Cupertino fixes this in Yosemite because, as administrator of 1,000 laptops, this is killing my time managment!

WOW! This has been up just under 3 months. No one has a solution?

  • Cannot Get Keychain Access to Quit on MacAir

I cannot 'quit' Keychain Access on my Macbook Air (os x v10.7.4). I've tried quitting from the drop down menu at the top and from the menu on the dock - neither worked. And I can't restart my computer because it tells me Keychain Access is preventing it. This is driving me CRAZY!
I searched the web for this issue and the only solution I found was from 2008 and mentioned an Activity Monitor. I have no clue if it even exists on my MacAir and when I searched the Help for Activity Monitor I only received two items, both dealing with monitoring children's activities.
Hoping someone knows how to fix this...please help!! Thanks!

  • ICloud Keychain vs. 1Password

    Hi all,
I've had 1Password for a while, and I really dislike it.  I find it incredibly non-intuitive and clunky.  (And the fact that it creates its own browser and that none of the passwords work directly with iOS apps is kind of a killer for me.  But I've trudged forward and tried to like it.)
Any comparisons out there between iCloud Keychain and 1Password?  I would LOVE to have this capability native to Apple computers, devices, and apps.
    Any thoughts or experiences?
    Thank you.

I used 1Password here and there and didn't like it, mainly because I didn't like the way it integrated with the OS.  It generally installed extensions in a way that it was difficult to remove, and I didn't like the UI.
I'm now using iCloud Keychain and it works well for me.  I think if you're on OS X and iOS, and you use Safari for your browser, then it's probably an excellent fit.  If you want to use other platforms or other browsers then you'll have areas where you can't easily sync your passwords.  That doesn't apply to me personally.

  • Occasional (and annoying) Keychain hiccup

I'm using a Mac to run scheduled Filemaker updates through cron on 10.4.6. The FMP Databases (FMP 7) are password protected so I save the passwords to the Keychain to ensure unattended operation when the scheduled cron job runs. This machine has two processes that run, one that runs at 2:25am and only once a day and another that runs every 10 minutes.
The problem is that somewhere in the night the 10 minute FMP process will simply ask for a password as if there is no saved password in the keychain. All updates get killed while FMP sits there with the authentication dialog open and waiting. It queues all the pending cron jobs up behind this process. Entering the password allows the process the continue but any queued processes will simply ask for a password as well for each queued job.
I've simply resorted to Force Quitting FMP which dumps the current and all queued jobs. The next cron induced job runs with no problem.
Is this a FMP problem or a keychain problem? There are no entries in any logs that I've looked in which give any indication of a problem.

I'm not sure if an update to Filemaker Pro 8 will help.
Also one of the most common keychain issues is when one asks Keychains to be applied "Just Once." Next time it asks, use "Always"
Filemaker's forums are here, and someone may be able to help you more there:

  • Installed lion have problem with keychain password

When i type the password for systems certificate itsays the password that i use for all the other keychains is wrong.  I get the multicolor spinning wheel each time after i enter the password.

Hi. I am wondering if you have solved the problem yet? I haven't had any other replies, so maybe my post isn't visible in the right places!
I have tried booting up in Safe mode, completely re-installing OS X Mavericks in Recovery mode, and repairing both permissions and the disk in Disk Utility, all without success. Those little windows are still there!
I came across 'How to KILL Keychain from Safari access' in More Like This, which appeared to be helpful, but the link given by Ash, doesn't seem to be active, as I just get the Apple Support home page.
If anyone else sees this, do you have any suggestions, please?

  • Keychain Login hangs systen after wake from sleep

On more than one occasion I awaken my machine from sleep to find a prompt that some application is requesting the password for my login keychain. Upon entering it, Nothing happens and further investigation shows that a number of applications in the background are unresponsive. I am able to quit some naturally and others I must force quit. However, I have no way of dismissing the keychain windows and they just hang there with no other option. I have tried CMDOPTESC but nothing comes up. I also tried launching Terminal and Activity monitor in the hopes of killing those processes but these programs never launch.
My only recourse is to force a shutdown with the power button.
This only seems to happen if the keychain is locked when I wake it from sleep. I prefer to have the keychain locked during sleep so that my keychain data is not vulnerable if theft were to occur.
I have now verified and repaired permissions on my keychain (permissions were wrong) so I will see if that helps. This problem started shortly after updating to 10.6 and never occurred in 10.5.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    -Scott

I have been experiencing that I cannot wake my system back up from overnight "sleep".
So I have been holding in the power button and shutting down and powering system on again.
This morning my system was sleeping and I could move the cursor accross both screens.
I tried cmd-opt-esc to no avail.
So this time I clicked the power button instead of holding it in. The windows prompted me to enter my password and it worked this time.
TEST 1: I just tested "sleep" for about 45 minutes and my system woke up to the password window.
The problem has appeared when I left my system in "sleep" overnight.
TEST 2: Leave system in "sleep" overnight.

  • Internet dead slow to stop with leopard keychain update

Hi all. I have an imac intel 2 and connect to my base station via an ethenet connection and a macbook connecting via wireless. I have installed leopard on the imac but not on the macbook. My internet connection on the imac was fine until I updated the keychain software update and noticed a slower connection. To test this I updated itunes on the imac and on the macbook. The itunes was about 40meg and here was the download speed roughly. The imac connected via ethernet took 20mins to download and the macbook took 2 mins to download. Help apple because something in the keychain update has killed my internet connection. Even surfing is slower. Any help or suggestions would be great. thanks russ

A few people have reported the same issue (me included) - Apple suggest rebooting your iMac in safe mode and then restarting - it worked for me and Internet is now fine and dandy.
