Keychain password asked

A friend of mine recently inherited a new Powerbook from a friend who has passed away. I helped him configuring the Mac.
To install software updates, we needed a password. Since we did not know the password of the deceased, we restarted the laptop with the system CD and pressing the C-key. Subsequently, we could give in a new password, and install software. Also we could install Mail.
The next day, however, my friend called me. Mail kept asking his password for his mail account. So he did, but after that, his keychain password was asked. And the program refused his new password!
We reset the password via system prefs. Changing the password was possible. But: same result...
What could be the solution?

We reset the password via system prefs. Changing the password was possible. But: same result...This sounds strange.

I just upgraded to Lion. I was trying to set up iCloud and it asked for my "login" keychain password. I've never been asked for the keychain password before. I've tried every password I can think of and nothing works. I'm normally asked for the password to my machine when upgrading software, signing on, etc. but this is different apparently. I tried the same password and it didn't work either. I read a couple of posts and they all want to take me through Applications/Utilities but that requires knowing your password in order to change it. I don't know it. Don't remember ever setting up a keychain password. Does anyone know how to change the keychain password if you don't know the keychain password???

Most of the time your Keychain password is the same as your login password. If you configured your computer to log you in automatically, you may not have used your login password in so long you forgot it.
There is no way to retrieve the "login" Keychain password, but you can reset the Keychain from the Preferences menu: select it in the Keychain Access menu and select "Reset My Default Keychain". This will create a new, empty Keychain but the old one will be saved should you ever remember its password.
The result of this is that you will have to supply passwords for everything that requires it, since without your Keychain they will no longer automatically fill themselves. However, once you supply them and store them in your new Keychain, they will be remembered.

There was an option to Cancel the pop up box which I have now done and it has carried on with the set up - so not sure what it was all about.
I am going to the Genius Bar tomorrow so will ask the question!

    Hello there!
I am a new Mc Bok Pro user and had been using my mac since Sept, 2012 with no problem. Just recently however, I have been experiencing a Keychain access problem. Specifically, whenever I open the mac, it asks for my keychain password... Can I restore my mac to its condition before Jan. 18, 2014? What should I do?
    Thanks everyone!

This is only for Local Items key chain not Login Keychain.

  • Keeps asking for keychain password when i open programs

i open safari, it asks for a password. I open almost anything and it asks for a keychain password, and i put the password i use to login to my username and it says it is wrong. I want this off, i dont want this coming up, so how do i go along doing this, especially without the password?

I'm not entirely sure this will work if your keychain is already locked, but try this:
    * Log in as the user who is having the issues
    * Open up System Preferences -> Accounts
    * Make sure the user under "My Account" is highlighted
    * Enter a new Password (you'll have to enter your currenty password first).
Note: this does not have to be a different password, you can use the exact same password you are using now, but you must re-enter it.
    * Re-enter your password in the Verify field.
    * Click on the Show All Button or any other button to get System Preferences to save your changes.
At this point a pop-up menu should show up telling you your keychain password has been reset. You may have to log out and back in again, but you shouldn't be getting the keychain pop errors any more.
Alternatively if you don't have anything important in your keychain you can always delete your keychain and it's preferences, of course then you'll lose all the information that's stored there.
    HTH.

  • Mail Asking for Keychain Password Randomly for Years

Apple Mail has been randomly asking me to type in my keychain password for one single email account for seriously 10 years.
How the **** can I turn this off, forever, and ever, so I never have to see the god **** thing again!?
It is on a Gmail account setup through Apple Mail.
    HARDWARE/SOFTWARE I AM RUNNING:
2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OS 10.6.7

The server is sometimes falsely rejecting your login. That happens occasionally with many mail servers. When it does, Mail assumes that the password saved in your Keychain is wrong, even though it isn't, and you get the prompt.
One thing you can do is to cancel out of the prompt. That will cause the account to be taken offline. Later you can take it back online (Mail > Mailbox > Take all accounts online) and try again. Usually it will work on the second try.
You may also be able to reduce the frequency of login failures by changing to a different authentication method. I don't use Gmail, so I can't tell you what the best method is. If you have another Gmail account that works better than this one, compare their Advanced settings in Mail preferences. If not, you'll just have to do some research or contact Gmail tech support (if there is any.)

  • Since i downloaded mavericks  my computer keeps asking for l? ocal items keychain password. What is that

Since I downloaded Mavericks my computer keeps asking forLOCAL ITEMS KEYCHAIN PASSWORD. What is that? It wont allow access to my computer without it!!

My guess is all the issues are probably related and fall back to malware.
AVG is probably correct in identifying malware. So I suggest you try some cleaning tools other than Emsisoft .
    ones I use (all of them one after the other until I find one that can cope) are;
    Roguekiller http://www.adlice.com/softwares/roguekiller/
    Malwarebytes anti malware Free http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/var2/confirm/
    ESET online scanner http://www.eset.com/int/home/products/online-scanner/
So first create a clean boot in Windows using Microsoft's instructions https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135?wa=wsignin1.0 and then run the anti malware applications.
My outside looking in guess is that malware has set itself up as an internet proxy and is is downloading copies of itself and other malware, blocking some mail port as times as downloading more malware is more important, and probably breaking your tivo as well..
Try the malware programs first. If that does not work I will try and talk you through some logging to see what is happening.

  • Keychain keeps asking for password

A few days ago I had a keychain failure and since then Mail and the system periodically ask me to enter the keychain password. I'd like to stop this behavior and let all installed apps use keychain while I'm logged in.
Where do I find the setting?

Pull out the preference file; com.apple.keychainaccess.plist You can find it here: Users>Library>Preferences
I'd recommend repairing permissions, (not that it has a direct connection to this issue...just a good thing to do when having problems) then, before launching Mail, or anything else, drag that file to the desktop, and then launch Mail, and see if the problem goes away.
