Keychain Password issues

I have search here and haven't found the answer. On every MM sync, I get a keychain dialogue that says "Enter the password for your user account on "Steve's Computer". The file that is trying to access the KC is "kcsync". The user account PW doesn't work. I have booted from the install DVD and reset the password for this account. No joy. I can unlock the system and login keychains without problems. Any other thoughts as to how to resolve this keychain problem?

Thanks for finding that Stephen, I've been trying to fix that for ages!
@ baltwo, this is a Keychain syncing issue, so it is perfectly acceptable to be in the 'Using Leopard' or 'MobileMe' forums. There's no need to be snappy if someone doesn't do something how you'd like.

  • Keychain password issue

While trying to add a new item into my keychain system passwords, I get an error message..."An error has occurred. Unable to add an item to the current keychain. Could not write to the file. It may have been opened with insufficient access privileges."

have you tried to repair disk permissions with disk utility (found in Applications/Utilities)?

  • Weird keychain/password issue

this may not be related to the keychain at all, but it applies to the "connect to server" dialog box when accessed from a user's newly created portable home directory.
    i haven't seen this before.
the user connects to another machine on the network (just a client sharing some files), yet the option to save the password in the keychain is missing. there was an old keychain entry for the machine/share, and keychain first aid shows the keychain itself is fine.
the user is a local admin on the machine with just mobility prefs applied via mcx.
is there a way to restore the "save password…" option here? it's pretty weird.
    thanks for any help.

  • Email 'keychain' password request

    /Users/lindsaypollard/Desktop/Picture 2.png
I am wondering if anyone else has the password chain pop up every time they send an email.
Once it goes to the outbox i can send it from there, but it gets tedious.
    Thanks for any help.
I read another discussion on this that sounds similar - but i am not sure how to apply the discussion to me.

    Hi lindsayMPollard,
Sounds like a Keychain password issue. Try the steps in this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1777.html It applies for both 10.4 and 10.5.
If that doesn't fix it, try this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS154.

  • Keychain Issues -- iScrobbler password issues

I use iScrobbler to send my iTunes music to last.fm. It stores my password in a keychain item. Every time the keychain (login) has been locked, and I start to listen to my music, I get prompted for the keychain password for iScrobbler.
What's strange is that this even happens after I've unlocked the keychain again for some other reason.
The item has access control set to allow access to iScrobbler. It even happens when access control is set to allow access from any app.
I've tried deleting the item and having iScrobbler make it again, doesn't work. I've tried first aid, and it shows no problems.
Once it's got the password it never asks for it again until the keychain is locked (when the computer sleeps for example). It's just annoying.
    Any ideas on a fix?

This is a follow-up to the original posting:
I read through some related posts and there was some advice to delete the keychain and then log in again and everything would reset itself. This is not the case.
I went to: Go>Utilities>Keychainaccess.app , then from the pull-down menu chose File>DeleteKeychain. From here you get the option of the following:
The "Delete References" option was highlighted in blue, so I chose it for no other reason than it seemed the suggested approach (I basically cannot find what the ramifications of the other option will do).
I then restarted my computer typed my login password and I was asked to sign into my keychain. I have no keychain password. If I do I have no recollection of what this is. How do I get around this and stop the keychain access requirements? Very frustrating at this point because I cannot sync my mail, calenders with MobileMe.
Interesting about MobileMe is that I can log on with my password online and on my mobile device via a browser, but cannot use that same password when I try to login via Keychain or to MobileMe settings via System Preferences. So it seems there is a unique password to which I am not aware and cannot figure out how to reset.
Any help / clarification would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Keychain "show password" issue with Airport

I have 3 Keychain items for Airport Express. Two are in Login & if I select "show password" it asks for my Keychain password (which is also my login password), which I give & it shows me my password. No problem.
The third Airport Keychain item is in System. Following the same procedure, I put in the same password & it rejects it.
For both the Login & System Keychain items I get the same window asking me for my Keychain password, so I can't figure out why my password won't work for the Airport item in System. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't know why the airport passwords end up in the System Keychain, or what's the password for the System Keychain, but probably you have the same problem I had: every time I wanted to connect to my Airport network I had to input the password again.
In one ocassion, before entering the password, I clicked the "information" arrow and saw that indeed access to the system.keychain was being requested by some application called system.iUtilserver. I deleted the preference file "user">Library>Preferences>system.iUtils.prefs and now I do not have to input the password every time I connect to the airport. The password still reappears in the System Keychain, however. I also noticed that other accounts in my laptop didn't have this problem. One downside of this situation is that any user of your machine can access the airports covered by the password in the System Keychain, since it's a keychain available to all users.

  • MacBook Air suddenly doesn't recognize my keychain passwords. Now iCloud, Safari and anything associated (including Systems Preferences) won't work.  Plz help - any ideas?

The only thing I can think that I've done differently is that I'd downloaded a scanner driver from Canon.  Everything worked fine for days after that.  It wasn't until I shut down the computer and restarted it that I keep getting these prompts to enter keychain passwords and it rejects the only passwords I've ever used.  No idea what to do.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  :-)

  • How do I get rid of keychain popups? I never set a keychain password.

Keychain popups happen CONSTANTLY since I got back from the Apple store when a manufacturer error required a hard drive replacement. I can't sign in to iMessage - although my password works to log me in to the computer, I get a keychain message immediately when trying to log in to iMessage. I get keychain messages almost continually through the day - 50x/day approximately. They vary in what they say.
One of the many says "A keychain cannot be found to store registration v1". There are several other messages which I can't remember. I have tried a few of the ways recommended here. Oops, another one just popped up.
Here is the sequence: "A keychain cannot be found to store KADiAdIDStorageKey."
When I click "Reset to Defaults", it asks if I'm sure about that.
I hit "Reset" get another popup:
"Please enter your login password. This will be used to create your new keychain."
I enter my Apple ID password and hit OK.
Now a new popup appears: "iTunes wants to use the "local items" keychain". Enter password.
I enter my Apple ID password and it wiggles (wrong password).
I have to hit cancel to make it go away.
It pops up, or "Mail wants to use the "local oems" keychain" pops up. I have to continually hit "cancel" all day long to stop these things.
PLEASE HELP ME!!! I never set up a keychain password, don't know what it is, don't want it, don't need added security, never had this problem for the first year that I owned this thing.
    Thank you.

It doesn't want your Apple ID password. It wants your computer's admin account password that you use to log into the computer.
    Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
      1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
      3. Click the "First Aid" tab
      4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
      5. Close the Preferences window
      6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
      7. Enter your username and password
      8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
      1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
      3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
      4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
      5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
      6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
          "New Keychain"
      7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
      1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
      4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.
The above comes from an article published on MacFixit.com.

  • How do i find com.apple.smig keychain password on MacBook Pro

In order to finish transferring old MacBook Pro stuff to my new iMac, I need a com.apple.smig keychain password.  What is it and where do I find it?  I looked in applications/utilities/keychain access/password, but I don't see com.apple.smig.  Is it under something else? thanx

Sorry, it doesn't work to look in Keychain.
Since both machines are fully occupied by the transfer process, you can't get into Keychain.
I checked on another machine and there was no com.apple.smig in Keychain. It was a macine I had just transferred everything from to a new machine and had gotten the same messge. It is hard to believe this is an issue for so many people and there are no ansers to be found.

  • Active Directory & Keychain Password Sync

We've been introducing some Macs into our Active Directory environment and I'm a little confused about how best to handle the local Keychain password.  We're joining systems to the domain so that users can use their network password to login to their Macs (accounts are setup as Admin, Managed, Mobile) and so far that is working great.
It's my understanding that the password on the default login keychain is set automatically when the user account is created, so it would match the password the user first used to login to the Mac.  However, we have a password expiration policy here, so users are changing their passwords at least every 3 months. As I understand it, by default the login keychain password is static, so I'm concerned that users are going to either forget the keychain password, or assume it is the same as their network password, and be unable to unlock the keychain should they even be prompted.
I've tried enabling the "synchronize login keychain password with account" setting in Keychain Access, but this causes another issue.  When the user changes their network password, the next time they login to the Mac they receive a Keychain prompt asking them to enter their old keychain password in order to keep the keychain pass in sync.
Is there any way to keep the keychain password synchronized to a user's AD account password without prompting them at all?  Or is their an accepted "best practice" regarding the keychain in active directory?
    Thanks

I've also written a blog post about this Topic:

  • Keeps asking for keychain password when i open programs

i open safari, it asks for a password. I open almost anything and it asks for a keychain password, and i put the password i use to login to my username and it says it is wrong. I want this off, i dont want this coming up, so how do i go along doing this, especially without the password?

I'm not entirely sure this will work if your keychain is already locked, but try this:
    * Log in as the user who is having the issues
    * Open up System Preferences -> Accounts
    * Make sure the user under "My Account" is highlighted
    * Enter a new Password (you'll have to enter your currenty password first).
Note: this does not have to be a different password, you can use the exact same password you are using now, but you must re-enter it.
    * Re-enter your password in the Verify field.
    * Click on the Show All Button or any other button to get System Preferences to save your changes.
At this point a pop-up menu should show up telling you your keychain password has been reset. You may have to log out and back in again, but you shouldn't be getting the keychain pop errors any more.
Alternatively if you don't have anything important in your keychain you can always delete your keychain and it's preferences, of course then you'll lose all the information that's stored there.
    HTH.
