Keychain password problems

I just upgraded to 10.4.6, now whenever I get my mail or am surfing the internet, I get a screen that says, "Please enter your keychain password". I entered the same password that I use for my account and receive the message, "Sorry, you entered an invalid password". I used disk utility to fix permissions, one problem was fixed, still having problems. I have changed my password in accounts, still same problem. I have tried to delete login in keychain access with no success.

Take a look at this thread, http://www.macfixit.com/comment.php?mode=display&sid=20050921061826456&title=Sys tem-widefreezes+when+Webbrowsing&pid=17566 especially the article it points to at http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/NATproblem#Routers_And_NAT_Enabled_BroadbandModems.

  • X509 keychain password problem

Hi - I'm trying to install certificates at the x509 level in my keychain, and while I have no problem doing it at the "Login" level, the "X509" is asking me for my "keychain password" which it is not accepting. my keychain password (for all other actions I've tried with the keychain) is the same as my (admin) user's password, but during this x509 import it won't accept the same password.
Any thoughts or things I can do that would solve this? can't seem to get encrypted email working otherwise

    Try this:
    1. Make sure that root is active as a user (in Netinfo... there are links in discussions about activating the root user).
    2. Login as the newly activated root user
    3. Double click the cert you wish to add to X509Anchors
    4. Select X509Anchors from the drop down menu
    5. Enter the password for the cert
    6. Enter "X509Anchors" for the password to add something to X509Anchors (minus the double quotes).
-- hopefully that will work. Be sure you're logged in as root and that you follow the case of X509Anchors exactly.
Good luck - this drove me NUTS until I found out about this on another site.

  • Cannot receive mail; keychain password problem

I recently bought a MacBook Air. While at the Apple Store making this purchase the Genius who sold it to me had to have me change my login password. He also advised that I upgrade the OS on my iMac desktop at home. Which I did. I do not use Keychain and told him that I did not want to.
Now I have a Mail problem. I can send and receive email fine within my own (administrator's) account. But my husband cannot receive mail in his Mail account. It is not an ISP problem because he can see his new mail on their webmail site.
When he opens his Mail app, it tells him that "Mail wants to use the 'login' keychain. He puts in his login password and every other password he can think of, but it will not recognize any of them. Then it says that "Mail can't connect to the accout "(ISPname)." He enters his ISP email password, and then it asks for the keychain password again.
The Connection Doctor says that "Trying to log into this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct." The username and password are correct; we never changed them. Now I'm stuck.
I really think this is connected to the OS upgrade. Can anyone help?

Everybody uses KeyChain. You can't 'opt out' of it, it's simply the way Mac OS X keeps track of who and what is allowed to do this or that, including Mail. The 'Genius' should have explained that to you....
Not to worry. Here's the trick.
    1. Click on the Spotlight (magnifying glass) in the top right corner of your screen.
    2. Type 'Keychain' in the search bar and press 'return'.
    3. In the 'Keychain' window that opens up, search for 'mail' in the filter bar.
    4. Click on and delete all entries that start with 'imap...' and 'smtp...'.
    5. Open Mail.app and choose Mail > Preferences... | Accounts | Account Information
    6. For each of your mail accounts in the left panel, clear the field under 'Password' and re-enter the correct password. After doing this for one account, click any of the tabs above (e.g., 'General') which will force a dialogue box asking you to save the changes. Confirm that you want to save the changes.
Repeat step 5 and 6 for all your different email accounts.

  • Downloaded lion now keychain password problem

was never asked for a password for the microsoft keychain

Certainly seems that way. Anyway all's sorted on that front.
I'm afraid I don't use Lion so I probably can't help you much, but it would help others to understand the problem if you could expand a little.
When are you being asked for the password? On login or are you trying to open Keychain Access from Utilities?
FWIW, the keychain password is usually your login password unless you've changed it.

  • Mail has intermittent keychain password problems with Hotmail account

Most of the time Mail can access both my Me mail and Hotmail. However, since I moved from Tiger to Leopard Mail loses access to my Hotmail password and asks for it to be reentered to check for mail. If I don't do this I get the usual problem lightning bolt icon by mt Hotmail in-box in Mail. But when I click this and recheck for mail manually it works fine every time.
Is mail just not accessing my key-chain when it isn't the active application I'm running?

This is a common report with Hotmail accounts, but currently mine is staying connected. I think the prompt actually results from the checking the connection on the SMTP, rather than the Incoming Server, but not sure in every case. I have seen the problem in Mail 2.x, 3.x and 4.x. If it goes into a period of frequently giving the prompt, I change to exclude the account from auto checking for new mail, and then manually check for new messages.
That mine is currently working may be due to my changing the SMTP to that of my ISP rather than the one from Hotmail.

  • HT2470 Grey screen after reboot and keychain password problems..

It's hard to believe I have only had my iMac 1 week and already I have managed to lock myself out of my user account and now after following online advice to unlock the keychain within utilities, I have a grey screen and spinning pointer. I remember deleting something from the keychain but now I can't even log on?
Is there anyway I can resolve this myself ( very little technical experience) or will Apple phone support be my best option?  Any answers would be greatly appreciated.............. thanks in advance.

You paid for 90 days of phone support. Might as well use it.

    Hello there!

Specifically, whenever I open the mac, it asks for my keychain password... Can I restore my mac to its condition before Jan. 18, 2014? What should I do?
    Thanks everyone!

This is only for Local Items key chain not Login Keychain.

  • I'm having a problem with keychain password, I never created Oneida

I Just ordered a new laptop and it is asking me for a keychain password which I have never created.  can anyone help me?

I don't think you provided a login password when you setup the computer. Your Apple ID is not your password, but it can be used to change a password if you configured that option during setup. You need to assign a login password. This should also become your Keychain password.
    Forgot Your Account Password
For Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
         Or see:
Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password
OS X Mountain Lion- Reset a login password,
OS X Mavericks- Solve password problems,
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Should this not resolve the Keychain password request please let me know. Write your password down and store it somewhere safe in case you forget it.

  • Keychain "login" Problems   Can't remember my Keychain password.  Admin Password also does not help. Mac Mini(Late 2012) OS 10.10.2

    Series of Keychain "Login" Problems.
    Hardware: Mac Mini (Late 2012)  2.5 GHz Intel COre i5,  4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    OS X : 10.10.2 upgraded yesterday
Mail wants to use "login" keychain.   I enter Password but no success.
CalendarAgent wants to use "login" keychain.   I enter Password but no success.
Com.apple.internetaccounts.xpc wants to you "login" keychain. Password, not successful.
At some point in past days I was offered to rename Keychain, so I did.
In Keychain Access, I deleted "Login"    and selected Delete references.
Just now I went into ~/Library/Keychains and found Login.Keychain and Login_renamed.Keychain.
    I have renamed Login.keychain -> Login-old.keychain.
    I renamed Login_renamed.keychain-> Login.Keychain.
In Keychain Access, I added "Login" back.  This should be the renamed keychain.
Original problems still persist.  No noticeable changes.
Keychain wants to use the "Login" keychain.   Can't remember my password or it is incorrect.
    Help?
    TITLprods

I turned off and turned on the computer.  When restarting it said that it could not use the Login and did I want to create a new or use and alternate?  I created new and for the moment things seem to be working under the command of the "New Login"
That still doesn't really alleviate the problem of the old login.

  • Problem with mac mail / keychain password

Hi there, I have several email accounts on mac mail when I open them three of them regularly ask me to input my keychain password, I do this and tick the box that says remember password but it still keeps happening. Ive dont the keychain repair to no avail and also followed apples advice with regards to making sure that there is no time limit for logging me out of the keychain / passwords. From what I can read on google this seems to be a fairly common problem it only seems to be happening on accounts that ive set up recently through POP 3 account mail easy and suggestions please. Many thanks

Use Keychain Access to delete the program password sites and then do the server connection again. This should save a new password entry in your Keychain and hopefully solve your problem.

  • Having Problems with my keychain password!

I had just changed my password because I had forgotten the original one and decided to update and install the new version of Mac OS X. Now it is asking me for a keychain password and it is getting annoying. I know the keychain password should be the same as my login password but when I enter my login password it says invalid password. What should I do and can I get rid of this keychain thing?

The password would be the same as your old login password, which you say you've forgotten. If you don't know the password, the only option is to delete the keychain and start a new one. Use Keychain Access (in the Utilities folder). Follow the instructions for "Delete a Keychain" in Help.

  • How do I get rid of keychain popups? I never set a keychain password.

Keychain popups happen CONSTANTLY since I got back from the Apple store when a manufacturer error required a hard drive replacement. I can't sign in to iMessage - although my password works to log me in to the computer, I get a keychain message immediately when trying to log in to iMessage. I get keychain messages almost continually through the day - 50x/day approximately. They vary in what they say.
One of the many says "A keychain cannot be found to store registration v1". There are several other messages which I can't remember. I have tried a few of the ways recommended here. Oops, another one just popped up.
Here is the sequence: "A keychain cannot be found to store KADiAdIDStorageKey."
When I click "Reset to Defaults", it asks if I'm sure about that.
I hit "Reset" get another popup:
"Please enter your login password. This will be used to create your new keychain."
I enter my Apple ID password and hit OK.
Now a new popup appears: "iTunes wants to use the "local items" keychain". Enter password.
I enter my Apple ID password and it wiggles (wrong password).
I have to hit cancel to make it go away.
It pops up, or "Mail wants to use the "local oems" keychain" pops up. I have to continually hit "cancel" all day long to stop these things.
PLEASE HELP ME!!! I never set up a keychain password, don't know what it is, don't want it, don't need added security, never had this problem for the first year that I owned this thing.
    Thank you.

It doesn't want your Apple ID password. It wants your computer's admin account password that you use to log into the computer.
    Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
      1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
      3. Click the "First Aid" tab
      4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
      5. Close the Preferences window
      6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
      7. Enter your username and password
      8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
      1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
      3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
      4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
      5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
      6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
          "New Keychain"
      7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
      1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
      4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.
The above comes from an article published on MacFixit.com.
