Keychain password questions

I've gotten used to most of OS X since my slow, late conversion to it two years ago, but its security arrangements still drive me nuts. I don't need them. I have no security concerns about my Powerbook. No master password is set on it. I'm the only user, except on occasions when I set up a new user for test purposes and then delete it. I know the admin password for my usual account, obviously, though I've set the PB up to log me in automatically on startup.
But somehow I've lost track of the password for my keychain(s), which I thought was the same password. I don't really understand what a keychain is, to be honest, and whenever I'm prompted to enter my password for it, I have to cancel out of the dialog box because nothing I can think of to enter is correct. I live in dread that one of these days I'm going to have to know that darn password. So, these questions:
1. Can I set a new password for a keychain without knowing the old one?
2. If not, can I delete a keychain completely without knowing the password, and what am I likely to lose if I do so?
(I regret to say that I find the online Mac Help's information on keychains almost completely opaque. Maybe it's just my anxiety getting in the way.)
3. When I open Keychain Access and click "Show Keychains", two keychains appear: one with my username, which contains three certificates, three application passwords and an internet password; and another called system, which contains only my Airport network password. I've successfully deleted two or three entries that were outdated and superfluous from my user-account keychain, but I have no idea how much trouble I'd be in if I deleted all the rest. To add to my confusion, I get prompted for my admin password when I want to delete things from the keychain — not my keychain password. Can anybody point me toward a clear, cogent explanation of keychains and how to get them under my control instead of being at their mercy? Many thanks...

Reset Keychain Password: Assuming that you are using a recent build of OS X, go to /Applications/Utilities and launch the app called Keychain Access. Go to the Window pulldown menu and select "Keychain First Aid". Enter your password, set the radio button to "Repair", and click "Start".
Tutorial: Keychain issues; resolving
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password.
This can be accomplished via the following process:
Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities
Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
Click the "First Aid" tab
Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
Close the Preferences window
Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
Enter your username and password
Click the "Repair" button
Another option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible.
This can be accomplished as follows:
Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting "New Keychain"
You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, enable a root user account, as detailed in Knowledge Base article #106290 (briefly: open NetInfo Manager, located in Applications/Utilities, click the lock and enter the administrator password, then select "Enable Root User" from the Security menu and follow on-screen instructions).
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, Keychain may be to blame.
For example, it appears that in some cases, failures in .Mac synchronization transfers are linked to issues with Keychain.
If you are having problems synchronizing data with .Mac servers, you may want to try the following process:
Open System Preferences and access the .Mac pane
Click the "Sync" tab
Uncheck the "Synchronize with .Mac" checkbox
Close System Preferences
Re-open System Preferences and repeat steps 1 and 2
Re-check the "Synchronize with .Mac" checkbox
If the above process does not re-allow synchronization, you may need to leave Keychain synchronization turned off in the "Sync" tab of the .Mac System Preferences pane.
MacFixIt reader Faisal writes:
"I believe the problem may be related to Keychain sync overwriting or mangling the .Mac information in the Keychain. By disabling Keychain sync I seem to be able to sync again without issue."
A keychain is simply a secured database in which you can store userids and passwords securely. OS X integrates most applications to the Keychain so that when a userid and/or password is requested the Keychain fills in the information automatically unless you've elected otherwise. This is especially useful when accessing secure web sites so you don't have to remember every username and password you've assigned.
When you create a new account a new keychain file is created for that account. The account password is the default password used for the keychain so when you log into the account the associated keychain is opened automatically.

  • Can't remember keychain password - help!

I ran the latest software updates on my six month old MBPro, then got a message that I needed to enter my keychain password. After many attempts, and then finally telling the computer to restore the keychain to its original settings, I now can't access iCloud. I think it's asking for a password from years ago, which I don't remember. What should I do? Thx!

The keychain with your data is in the old keychain. I think it might be easier to reset iCloud password rather than try to restore the old keychain to recover the password. If you don't use iCloud you can simply sign out and not worry with the password.

  • Restoring Keychain Passwords When Reinstalling OS

I have keychain passwords enabled across all my devices - iMac running Mavericks, and iPad and iPhone running ios7. I chose not to set up a security code as I did not want my passwords stored in the Cloud.
My question is: if I need to completely reinstall my OS, or choose to do a clean install of a future update to OS such as Yosemite, how do I restore my keychain passwords without a security code?

Thanks for your response, PJRS, but if I were to do a clean install of, say, Yosemite I would almost certainly choose not to migrate my users from a TM backup. I would prefer to reinstall all my software from scratch and only restore data files from Time Machine (most are held on an external disk anyway). Could I still restore Keychain passwords from Time Machine in this instance (and if so where would I find them)?

  • TS1544 I never accepted to set up a keychain password when I was setting up my Mac. Now I'm being prompted for a password! It's rendered my Mac unusable.

I didn't accept to creat a keychain password when I was setting up my Mac, a couple of months ago. Now it's prompting me for one, & has as a consequence rendered it unusable?!

Bought new at WalMart. With initial set up it asked use existing or create new apple id. I chose create new. I don't remember if it asked there for the email address but not a password. It did ask for a birthday (they are both younger than 13). So the home screen came up. Went to settings>icloud>apple id and password. I chose get a free apple id where it said they were too young so I used my husbands and my birth years for each girl. So I still havent set a password entering the apple id's then chose forgot password entered the email and chose reset by email. I tried by security questions but it couldnt verify the birthdays. If it matters, their emails are attatched to an iPhone and an iPod but with my apple id.

  • How do I find out my keychain password? Need more info fast about this

My computer started to get really slow, so I looked what I could do to make it faster again. After searching I found that the safari content was high and that I should delete it to make it less laggy and slow. Long story short I ended up deleting my saved passwords on safari...Looking into more info, I found out that I needed to get to Keychain Access. I got to Keychain access, found all the passwords.
    My question..
•How do I get them out of Keychain?
•If I end up needing my password for Keychain, how do I find that out? I have the like start up CD, but I dont remember ever making a password.
•And if I do retreive my Keychain Password some how, will that delete everything stored in Keychain? I would have just tried it, but its a lot of passwords I CAN NOT lose...
    Please help :/
    Thanks!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Unable to type in the "login" keychain password

When I switch on my iMac G5 I am asked for my keychain password: but I can't type in the space provided. I can still use the computer normally, e-mail, internet etc. are all unaffected but the pop-up box asking for the keychain password won't go away, (and won't allow me to type in the password).
The message I get is, "com.apple.internetaccounts.xpc wants to use the "login" keychain"

Only thing that got me around this was a clean install of Mavericks on the new Mac and , when I used migration assistant, avoiding transferring the network settings. It was my mother in law's Mac so I essentially only transferred her documents and mail messages. I then went back later and manually transferred the music and photos. I ' knew' there was some issue with the OS itself because I had tried to clone the old system with Super Duper as an extra back up and even that balked with an error. Shrit Pocket Supprt read the error file and it was they who divined that that my "old" copy of OSX was corrupted. Plus I was umm more familiar with this scenario as this was the second Mac that I was having this issue with. Admittedly both the upgrades in question were from Macs that had been transferred and transferred and transferred etc so I am not surprised that there was something crappy that had got passed through. Bottom line: clean install of Mavericks then manually move over what you need is the cleanest way in this scenario unfortunately. Yes a whole lotta work!

  • Keychain password what does that mean?

keychain password what does that mean?

Keychain is an Apple technology dating back to OS9 that saves commonly-used passwords for web sites, your email, etc. It matches the web site or applcaiotn to waht's stord and reloads the password to save re-entering it all the time.
What are you doing when the computer asks for a keychain password? Usually you can access the Keychain Utility's stored info using your administrative password.
It would help if we knew your Mac OS version. "iOS 6.1.2" in your profile is not a computer OS, but used only for iDevices. Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu wil show your actual Mac OS version. Once you have it, you should change your profile to match that--it will get you faster help for future questions.
If you let us know the OS version, we can get you moved to the forum for that version, where you should get faster help with Keychain issues. This forum--although it's hard to tell from the unfortunate choice of labels--is for iMacs made before 2006 and doesn;t get as much traffice as forums for newer Mac models.

  • Help with Keychain password AND AIM ...

    Okay, here it goes ...
I just bought an iSight camera from a guy up the freeway, and it seems to be in working shape, however, whenever I go to use it on Safari, I get asked for a a keychain password every few seconds, which I've long since forgotten since I don't hardly ever use Safari, and I also get asked for a password for AIM,"Instant Messenger log-in password".
    THREE QUICK QUESTIONS
    1) How can I get a new keychain password since I've forgotten the old one apparently. Nothing I try seems to work.
    2) How can I get an AIM "Instant Messenger Log-In" password? I've never had one.
    3) Does the passowrd I use to log in here count for anything.
I really hate that annoying Keychain crap! What a headache.
Thank you all very much in advance.

    Hi SoCalFrank1,
Open Keychain Access for inside Appleictaions/Utilities
Double Click on the AIM item.
    Select the Show Password checkBox
Enter the Admin password in the pop up and Allow Once
    Change the Password as required.
    Quit Keychain Access.

  • What is a Keychain Password?

I cannot start my computer because it's asking for a "keychain password." I have never had a "keychain password" nor been asked for one in the five months I've owned this computer.

Thanks for your help with this, Barney.
I did not change my log-in password, but the computer did not recognize my password. I did follow a chain of questions up here, though, and "repaired" my password. That seems to have solved the problem.
Not sure how it got out of synch. I was getting strange messages in Safari telling me that a website, that I have used frequently, has malware, and I was concerned that this was the source of my problem. Now that the password has been repaired, I'm not getting this problem.
