Keychain Password Reset

Good Day,
I am new to Mac, and have a Common Acces Card (CAC) for military site and e-mail access. Well while getting used to the system and keychain, clearly keychain created a key for my CAC password, which I locked thinking that the prompt was asking for my army site password and not the keychain. Now I can't figure out how to reset that password so that I can get in.
Currently, I can't even get to the website. When I click the certificate, the page just breaks.
I brought the computer to the Genius bar and after an hour and two "genius'" couldn't figure out how to unlock the certificate.
Any ideas?

choose 'delete references and files". then log out/in and the login keychain will be recreated empty with the same password as your new login password.

Keychain password reset problem

I have a powerbook g4 that I have forgotten the keychain password. I have started the system with the OS DVD and reset the passwords I could and can't find a way to reset the keychain password.
Do I have to delete the keychains and start over if so, how do I do this?

I tried the same password and it didn't work either. I read a couple of posts and they all want to take me through Applications/Utilities but that requires knowing your password in order to change it. I don't know it. Don't remember ever setting up a keychain password. Does anyone know how to change the keychain password if you don't know the keychain password???

Most of the time your Keychain password is the same as your login password. If you configured your computer to log you in automatically, you may not have used your login password in so long you forgot it.
There is no way to retrieve the "login" Keychain password, but you can reset the Keychain from the Preferences menu: select it in the Keychain Access menu and select "Reset My Default Keychain". This will create a new, empty Keychain but the old one will be saved should you ever remember its password.
The result of this is that you will have to supply passwords for everything that requires it, since without your Keychain they will no longer automatically fill themselves. However, once you supply them and store them in your new Keychain, they will be remembered.

There is no way to change a keychain password without the original password. The only option is to delete the keychain and start a new one. Use Keychain Access. (You could keep a back up of the old keychain file in case you remember the password some day.)

If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Any change on reboot?

Need original keychain password, had to do a password reset.

I just purchased an IMAC and somehow forgot my system password after going through the computer setup. So then i had to reset my system password using the command R prompt and selecting the recovery disk then perform a restart and then do a control key and open a terminal window and run resetpassword command. Now when logging on onto the computer it throws up errors saying cant find the original keychain password. Need a little guidance.

The keychain password is usually the original admin password. If you reset your admin password, because you forgot the old one, the original keychain password remains in effect. Unless you can remember the old admin/keychain password, you will have to delete your existing keychain and start a new one.
The keychain password is not resettable, or retrievable by any method available to users. All you can do, as I said, is delete the old one and start a new one, with a password you then select.

Is there a way to reset keychain passwords from server.app?

We have a Lion server and a number of Macs that authenticate with the server through open directory. On occasion users have forgotten passwords, and so I've reset them from server.app. I've tried both getting them to enter their password on the server, or setting their password to "password" with reset at next login set, but both methods result in an issue whenever the user logs in where they're prompted to create a new keychain or use their old one (which is not possible because they have forgotten the password to unlock it). This is frustrating for me and users.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this how it is supposed to work? It'd be a real pity if the latter was true, and would go against the idea that "it just works" on the Mac.

That's the way it works. Due to the nature of a Keychain, and what is potentially stored in it, once a password is forgotten you need to use a new Keychain and all data within is "lost". If there were a way to reset the Keychain password then you can grab anyone's Keychain, insert it into another account and then use the reset password to get all of the data out of it… at which point there's little point to password protecting it at all.

I understand that it can be frustrating when you are prompted for the login keychain multiple times. I would suggest resetting the keychain as well. Please follow the steps in the attached article to complete this process.
OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password
If you don't remember your original (former) account password
If you don't remember your original password, you'll need to delete the keychain. Deleting a keychain also deletes all the password data saved in that keychain.
In Keychain Access, choose Preferences from the Keychain Access menu.
If available, click the Reset My Default Keychain button. This will remove the login keychain and create a new one with the password provided.
If Reset My Default Keychain is not available, choose Keychain List from the Edit menu.
Delete the "login" keychain.
The next time you log in to the account, you can save your current password in a keychain.

i just updated my macbook at to OS X Yosemite 10.10 and that keychain password window keeps popping up and i can't remember that password.
Can someone please tell me how to reset my password or at least remove that window?

How can I reset Keychain password?

We have a MacMini at home running Leopard. My daughter somehow reset her keychain password and can't remember it, so Mac Mail is unable to log in to her Gmail account. I have admin on the computer, but I can't figure out if there is a way to reset her keychain password so that her Mail will work again.

If you don't know the keychain password, the only way to reset it is to delete the old keychain and create a new one. See the instructions in Keychain Access Help. (Keychain Access is in the Applications > Utilities folder.) The keychain is encrypted, and the contents cannot be recovered without the original password.
