Keychain password ??? What is it?

Dear all, I have an Intel Mac with Tiger.
I have never set up a keychain password but Safari and iWeb - and also others -ask me for it regularly. If I type in my system password it is not accepted - just like any other password I have ever used. I am unable to publish my site with iWeb without the keychain and it is really unconfortable to keep on clicking "cancel" when to pop-up window appears in the middle of work.
Is it possible to set a new keychain password or convince the system that I can live without any keychain password?
Thank you in advance.
Laszlo

The Problem arrises because your Login PW and your Keychain PW are different.
Possibly you changed your Login PW in the past?
Launch Keychain Access in Applications>Utilities, find the place to reset the PW there... I'm on Leopard at the moment, which no longer has Keychain Access.

Keychain is an Apple technology dating back to OS9 that saves commonly-used passwords for web sites, your email, etc. It matches the web site or applcaiotn to waht's stord and reloads the password to save re-entering it all the time.
What are you doing when the computer asks for a keychain password? Usually you can access the Keychain Utility's stored info using your administrative password.
It would help if we knew your Mac OS version. "iOS 6.1.2" in your profile is not a computer OS, but used only for iDevices. Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu wil show your actual Mac OS version. Once you have it, you should change your profile to match that--it will get you faster help for future questions.
If you let us know the OS version, we can get you moved to the forum for that version, where you should get faster help with Keychain issues. This forum--although it's hard to tell from the unfortunate choice of labels--is for iMacs made before 2006 and doesn;t get as much traffice as forums for newer Mac models.

  • Since i downloaded mavericks  my computer keeps asking for l? ocal items keychain password. What is that

Since I downloaded Mavericks my computer keeps asking forLOCAL ITEMS KEYCHAIN PASSWORD. What is that? It wont allow access to my computer without it!!

My guess is all the issues are probably related and fall back to malware.
AVG is probably correct in identifying malware. So I suggest you try some cleaning tools other than Emsisoft .
    ones I use (all of them one after the other until I find one that can cope) are;
    Roguekiller http://www.adlice.com/softwares/roguekiller/
    Malwarebytes anti malware Free http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/var2/confirm/
    ESET online scanner http://www.eset.com/int/home/products/online-scanner/
So first create a clean boot in Windows using Microsoft's instructions https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135?wa=wsignin1.0 and then run the anti malware applications.
My outside looking in guess is that malware has set itself up as an internet proxy and is is downloading copies of itself and other malware, blocking some mail port as times as downloading more malware is more important, and probably breaking your tivo as well..
Try the malware programs first. If that does not work I will try and talk you through some logging to see what is happening.

  • I've forgotten my keychain password, what now?

I'm using a 2009 macbook air, and have had problems recently as I cant remember my keychain password.
I can use the device under normal conditions, but occasionally I am prompted to enter the login keychain pw, but when I try what I thought was it it's rejected. Any suggestion greatfully received, thanks.

I thought so too, but Im using the admion pw without success.
I can operate on my main account, but when I try to log into secondary accounts (for work, volunteer groups, etc) the keychain window pops up repeatedly asking for the keychain pw.
I dont recall changing the pw at any time, but I may have done so.
I have tried the option of creatinga new keychain pw, but the same thing happens.
    I'm lost.

  • HT1631 Forgot my keychain password

I forgot my keychain password ,what should I do?

Normally, it matches your login password. If not, then color the login.keychain gone. Delete it and recreate a new one, this time remembering its password.

  • Cant figure out what my keychain password is.

    Hey,
I didn't set up this computer and I need to figure out what my keychain password is. Every thing finder help tells me to do already requires it.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Justin,
    Changing your keychain password
You can change the password for your keychain at any time. However, if you want your default keychain to be unlocked automatically when you log in, make sure your keychain password is the same as your Mac OS X login password.
If your Mac OS X login password is not the same as your default keychain password, you'll be asked for the password whenever an application needs access to your keychain and your keychain is locked.
Open Keychain Access and select the keychain in the drawer (click Show Keychains if the drawer is closed).
Choose Edit > "Change Password for Keychain 'login'." (The name of the keychain in the menu matches the name of the selected keychain. If you selected the keychain that unlocks when you log in, the name you see is "login.")
If the keychain is locked, type the password to unlock it.
Type the current password for this keychain.
Type a new password, then type it again to verify.
    Click OK.
You can use Password Assistant to help you choose a new password. Click the "i" button to see how secure your new password is.
from keychain access help searched "password for keychain access"
    hope it helps you, Eme

  • Hello there! am new to mac and had been using my mcbook pro for like a year now with no problem but last Monday, I started having concerns about my keychain access.. every time i open the mac it asks for my keychain password.. what can i do?

    Hello there!
I am a new Mc Bok Pro user and had been using my mac since Sept, 2012 with no problem. Just recently however, I have been experiencing a Keychain access problem. Specifically, whenever I open the mac, it asks for my keychain password... Can I restore my mac to its condition before Jan. 18, 2014? What should I do?
    Thanks everyone!

  • I have lost my MAC OS 10.6.8 Keychain password AND my Master password...what can I do?

I have misplaced my MAC OS 10.6.8 Keychain passwords along with my Master password, can anyone help me resolve this?

That depends on what you consider a "resolution"... What are you trying to do, and why? How did this come to your attention?
Usually, your keychain password is the same as your account password. Note that if your account password is blank (contains zero characters), Keychain Access will refuse to allow you to unlock it, but generally applying a "proper" password to your account will resolve this (edit: depending on how you do it. At this stage I don't recommend any actions until you've clarified the situation).

  • What is the system keychain password?

Every single time I logon to my PB12, an alert pops up asking me for the system keychain password. I have tried the only password on this system but it tells me that is invalid.
I click cancel and everything works fine. It is 'Airport' that is causing it to ask, becuase until I click cancel airport remains inactive.
Why is it asking for the password?
Why won't it accept the only password I have on this system?
Why does it ask, when clicking cancel makes it work fine anyway?
What a pain in the (bottom) this is.

I have a similar problem myself. I can unlock the "System.keychain" keychain, but if I want to move items around, it asks me for the password again.
When I press the unlock button, it asks for the password for my full user name. And that one works, the keychain unlocks. But an unlocked keychain doesn't really let you do much administration on it. You must enter its password for any administration tasks. And that's when I get stuck: the system doesn't accept any password I know of, not even the empty password.
But I can delete items. So I can delete the item, then recreate it in the other keychain.
It seems like the system keychain is like a group, that can contain references to keys so that the whole system can use that key. But is it really like this, or is a copy of the key created, when a key automatically gets into the sytem keychain (like the airport keys)?

  • What is a "login" keychain password

I'm trying to get my wifi to work and it asks for three passwords; I don't know what a "login" keychain password means. Also, it says the wifi network needs a "WPA" password. I don't know what that is either.

Your  "login" keychain password is the password you choose when you set up your user account. It is the same as the administrator password for your account.
Your WPA password is the password to access  your Wi-Fi network.  Not to be confused with the password for your wireless router(this allows you to change the settings) which creates the Wi-Fi network.

  • I logged onto my MacBook Air and it is asking me for my "local items" keychain password for several different things. I do not know what this is or how to get rid of it. Please help. Thanks.

I logged onto my MacBook Air and it is asking me for my "local items" keychain password for several different things. I do not know what this is or how to get rid of it. Please help. Thanks.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, testing after each one, until it's resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Follow the directions in this support article.
    Step 2
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device.
    Step 3
Open the Keychains folder as in Step 1. There should be a file in that folder with the name "login.keychain". If there is also a file iwith the name "login_renamed_1.keychain", then please do as follows:
    Rename login.keychain to "login-old.keychain".
    Rename login_renamed_1.keychain to "login.keychain".
You can then close the folder.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Delete the login keychain from the keychain list. Choose Delete References when prompted, not Delete References & Files.
    Select
    File ▹ Add Keychain...
from the menu bar. Add back the file now named "login.keychain". If any of your needed keychain items are missing from it, also add back the file now named "login-old.keychain". I suggest you transfer any needed items from that keychain to the login keychain, then delete it. The transfers are made by drag-and-drop in Keychain Access. You'll need to enter your password for each item transferred.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.
