Keychain won't add network password

I recently changed my airport network password to a 13 char WEP to be compatible with my roommate's PC. I first tried modifing the password in my keychain with no success, so I deleted the password from my keychain with the idea that checking the box "add to keychain" when I logged-in to my network would solve the problem. Well..... it's not being added to my keychain. I've done this at least 20 times (since it kicks me off when the machine sleeps) with no success. I tried adding it manually with no success. Any suggestions?

I will not help but I can offer solace; I had exactly the same problem today (already before upgrading from 10.4.3 -> 10.4.4).
I fiddled around with Airport, upgraded to AE 5.7, tried closed network off and on, automatic and preferred network selection, etc. etc. all to no avail.
The problem is indeed with the keychain. I fiddled around and I was about to re-install the OS when all of sudden between re-boots OS X asked for a password to access the keychain. I think I had moved the login.keychain to a safe place (from ~/library/keychains) and moved it back later.
But now, I have ended up with duplicate keychain entries : system, login and filevaultmaster are all duplicated (except for the X509 Anchors); I tried deleting the keychainaccess list, no success.
I'll post this observation separately.

  • Won't recognize network password

Last night my iMac stopped accessing the internet. I can't get the computer to recognize the network password. I have not changed the password for months and I just used it with my iPad to set up. My network is a secure password protected network.
I don't know if this could be related but I recently "lost" both iTunes and iPhoto. The programs were missing. I downloaded the latest iTunes and it seems to have fixed the problem. I am waiting on a iLife disk for iPhoto. My pictures are still on the system. This happened over the last few days.
    Any ideas?

After you do the Disk Utility operation described below, try using the Keychain Access utility to delete your Wi-Fi passwords. If that doesn't help, here are some things to try to reset the connection settings on your Mac:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    3) In the same panel as (2), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    4) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    5) In the folder /Library/Preferences (not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
They may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.

I'd immediately use Disk Utility to perform a "verify disk" operation on your boot volume. If it reports problems, boot into "safe mode" by booting with a "shift" key held down to run the equivalent of a "disk repair" operation. If that fails, you'll need something more powerful like DiskWarrior.

If you're running the latest version of iLife, you may be able to recover iPhoto by installing the iPhoto 9.1 updater: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1322

  • Keychain. won't remember server passwords

    Hello,
I have a MBP running 10.6 and an imac running 10.5.
Everything is on a Time Capsule network.
I have two separate logins on the MBP and just one on the imac.
Every time I try to access the other computer over the network, I have to re-type the user name and password for that machine.
Basically, i want to be able to press the button on the server list and connect straight to the networked hard drive.
However (in either direction) - even if I select the button "remember this password in my keychain" - the keychain fails to remember the password and I have to wait, even if I click out of the network server and back in...
I assume this is a problem with the keychains (on both machines)... can anyone provide me with a fix for this problem... many thanks
    Ben

Try going into Keychain Access (in /Applications/Utilities) then under the "KeyChain Access" item on the menu bar, select "Keychain First Aid" (or just simultaneously apply the ⌥⌘A keys.
Or, in Keychain Access, you could try just deleting any item that pertains to login to the computer with which you are trying to connect, then at next connection, be sure the "Remember password" checkbox is checked.
Another option that you might consider, once you can connect without having to enter username/password every time, is, once mounted, to drag the icon of the other computer onto your dock -- that will give you a one-click dynamic AFP mounting capability whenever needed.

  • Keychain won't accept my password

I am trying to connect my son's Powerbook G4 and my own iMac G5 iSight via our airport wireless cards in order to be able to share files with each other. I have had success in getting the Powerbook to be able to log onto the internet using the G5 as the "base station" but we can't connect as a registered user on either computer because neither computer will accept out passwords. Both compuers recognize each other on the network, but I can only access the drop box folders because the computers will not accept our passwords. I assumed we were to use our log in password, however that does not work at all. If I need to use my airport password, it seems as though I changed it a few months ago according to the info I see in Keychain Access utility. I CAN NOT view that airport network password, which I assume must be the one that I need to connect, even when I go through the steps that I found on Mac help and the internet for what to do if you forget your password. For some reason, when I check show password box and the "enter your keychain password" dialog box comes up, I enter my password but the computer will not accept it. This password is the same as my adminstrator password and it works for all of the other keychain items with the exception of the Microsoft Intermediate Certificates keychain. This has me baffled. It's a combination of not being able to access files from one computer to another and not being able to retrieve this password. Can anybody help me. I am stumped!

I actually have two issues going on here. I can not access files from computer to computer and I can not get my forgotten airport password from keychain.
I am connecting by going to the finder, using the connect to server option, I click on browse in the next window, click on network in the next and then click on the icon for the other computer in the last window. When I double click on the computer icon, that's when the dialog box comes up in order to access as a registered user. I type in no computer names at all when doing this.
I have created a small network from the Powerbook G4 to the iSight G5 via the airport connection between the two computers. The G5 is connected to the internet with a cable modem and I have broadband access. The powerbook can in fact access the internet and it can also recognize the G5 through the "connect to server" option through the finder.
When I double click on the G5 server in the finder window of the G4, a dialog box comes up asking for the password in order to access the G5 as a registered user. I have entered the administrator password for both computers but neither one works. I assumed that one of these would work as I use the same password for log in, etc. (Each computer has a different password) I can get into the drop box on the G5 as a "guest". I thought I must have created a password for this access and I tried to retrieve it through the keychain utility.
When I get into keychain on the G5, I am able to find all of my stored passwords via the following seqence.
In order to view my stored/and or forgotten passwords, I open keychain, click on the item for which I want to view the password and the dialog box comes up asking for my keychain password in order to complete this procedure. This process works for me when I enter the password which is the same as my administrator password, except when I click on the "system" lock and try to view my stored password for airport access. When I click on this in keychain, the dialog box comes up, I enter the same password and the response is that the password is incorrect. According to the info in the keychain utility, I changed the password on January 13, 2006. But I can't view it because my keychain password will not let me access this information. I can retrieve all of my other passowrds except this one. I have no idea if this is in fact the password that I must use to log in as a registered user to access the files on the G5 from the G4. I get the same results (incorrect passwword) when I try to access the G4 from the G5.
As I stated, the computers recognize each other and the Powerbook has internet accesss via the G5. Why can't I retrieve the forgotten password in keychain and is this why I can't access the files? Am I missing something in the system preferences.? Both computers are set for file sharing and I even clicked "get info" on the hard disks and unlocked access for "everyone". Was this a mistake?
The G4 is running Panther 10.3.9 with Airport 3.2 and the G5 is running Tiger 10.4.6 with Airport 4.2.

  • Keychain Won't Store My Passwords Anymore

I have ran keychain first aid. It had problems but they are solved now. Well, my problem remains. I cannot store passwords for Safari, Apple Mail accounts, Adium, nothing.
I really don't know what to do. I have 6 email accounts and everyday I have to manually enter each. Same for my IM accounts in Adium.
How did this happen? I have no idea. All I know is I restored my keychain for this matter and nothing happened. I really don't even know what restoring the keychain works for.
I would really appreciate any help.

Well, it doesn't matter if I do that, since my main problem is Mail, right?
When I try to store my passwords in mail, I enter them and then save. I come back to the account immediately and the pass is not there.
If I delete my keychain and do it again, will this stop in Mail? Or will I just lose my Safari, Wifi and Network passwords for no reason?
Thanks for the help. I need all I can get

  • Error trying to configure airport & add network password...

Ok... I have been using my airport for awhile now and decided I wanted to put a password on for my wireless internet. I've gone through the Airport Admin Utility like it says, it recognizes my airport and when I click on Configure, it'll let me put in a password but then tells me "An error occurred while reading the configuration."
I've done the reset 3 times now by pushing the paperclip into the bottom of the airport so the password is reset to "public" and tried adding the network password that way (as well as changing the 'public' password)
But... I still get an error message saying it wasn't able to complete the task. HELP PLEASE!!! It's so very frustrating
I have a macbook pro now but I still have the old airport (wasn't experiencing any problems until now...go figure) it still works great, connects, everything. All I wanted was a password!!
    ~Lindsay

Ah, ok, my mistake there as I got the idea you had a Snow. For the Graphite you can look here to see what the various led sequences and colours mean and here for information about resetting and reloading the Graphite.
I think the lights you are seeing suggest that the Graphite is probably in the correct mode. I think the reason you may be seeing the Green light on the right is because you still have the Graphite connected by ethernet cable to your cable modem.
So, I'm hoping that if you follow the Graphite specific reset and reload instructions referred to above you will have some success. Note that the very important point is that you have to have the Graphite connected to your computer by ethernet cable to do the reload and initial setup using the admin utility, you cannot do it over the wireless interface.
The only thing is that the instructions suggest that you use a crossover ethernet cable or connect through a hub using ordinary cables. If I recall the Graphite was originally supplied with a crossover cable (most, if not all, crossover cables are labelled as such to avoid confusion.) If you do not have one you can buy one at your usual computer store. However, before doing that you could try using an ordinary cable as most (if not all) computers these days are able to adapt to the type of cable being used.
Sorry about the original confusion over which ABS you have, hopefully this will get you going. Let us know if things progress.

  • Keychain won't remember WEP password

every time I try and get mail or connect to the internet via airport this machine fails, and after going through network diagnostics requires me to enter the WEP password ... EVERY TIME ... very annoying. I check the "remember this password" box (every time), but the machine WILL NOT remember the password ...HELP

Try opening your Keychain Access app (Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access) and going to Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid. There you can verify and repair problems in your keychain.

  • ICloud Keychain won't use stored password -- why?

I have a problem with exactly one website -- www.fltplan.com -- that won't store play nicely with iCloud Keychain (in Safari, on Mavericks).  I have a password already defined for this site in iCloud Keychain, but when I go to this site it prompts me for a new one instead of filling in the one it knows.
I used to believe it's because of how the site had named the userid and password fields, but they've renamed the fields to be "username" and "password" and the problem persists.  Surely Safari could identify those?  Anyway, could anyone with expertise in the area snoop out the site and say definitively what the problem is?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Thanks for your reply, Eric:
Safari (I'm using 7.0.2) no longer has the setting mentioned in these articles.  And my problem is that it is offering to save a (new) password, rather than use the one that is already defined in iCloud Keychain.
And it never seems to recognize when the cursor is in the user name field...

  • Won't accept network password

I have an iPhone 4S.  I was required by my employer to download an app, RSA SecurID, for another level of security when working from home.  After I did this, I noted that my visual voicemail was not available.  After searching for answers, I reset the network settings.  Visual voicemail came back just fine.  Now the phone won't accept the correct password for my wifi.  Funny thing is, though, that it does "see" the old network name, which incidentally, had the same password.  The network name still showed up on the list, so I tried it and it connected.  My MBP is connected to the network just fine.  I have tried resetting the router, turning the phone off and on, turned wifi off and on in the General Settings.  It just fails to connect.  Anybody got any ideas?  Thanks.

    Hey Ellen Higgins,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone will connect to networks but not a specific one network. A frustrating situation for sure since other devices are able to connect to the same network. Since it is just this one network you may want to try and forget this network and search for it and try to connect again. If that does not work you may want to reset network settings on the iPhone.
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network
Verify that you're attempting to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Make sure you're entering your Wi-Fi password correctly. Passwords may be case sensitive and may contain numbers or special characters.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • Keychain won't remember my passwords?

I've always been pretty good about organizing my keychains on my computer but the other day accidentally deleted all passwords. I didn't think it would be that big an issue thought because after they all were entered and marked as "remember" it would just repopulate and all would be well. Instead, however, none of my passwords are remembered. I've gone into Keychain Access and can't find any issues. I've even run verify and repair within keychain.
Anybody know what i might have done or how to make sure my passwords are remembered from now on?
I've already searched to make sure this wasn't a question already and couldn't come up with anything... Any feedback is appreciated.
    Thanks!

Are you referring to web site passwords, using Safari? They are "remembered" by storing them in the keychain.

  • When i back up an iphone on itunes does it save my social network passwords and stuff so when i connect another phone and sync it it'll all be there and i won't have to sign into everything again?

when i back up an iphone on itunes does it save my social network passwords and stuff so when i connect another phone and sync it it'll all be there and i won't have to sign into everything again? because, i don't know most of my passwords im just signed in to everything on my phone but i'm getting a new one.
    please help

    Hey menaelraghy,
Thanks for the question. The following resource outlines what is backed up, you may be interested in this section:
    iTunes: About iOS backups
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
    - Keychain (includes email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some applications)
If you encrypt the backup, you can transfer the keychain information to the new device. With an unencrypted backup, you can restore the keychain only to the same iOS device. If you're restoring to a new device with an unencrypted backup, you need to enter these passwords again.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • How do I add a password to an existing Computer-to-Computer (ad-hoc) network?

I have just created a computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) network but accidently missed the step to add a password to restrict access to the network.  I cannot see any options to edit or manually manage the 'device' network.
How do I add a password or delete the network?

Use AirPort Admin Utility to enable wireless encryption on the one called "Main". Use WPA2 or WPA (with a non-dictionary password) if all of your equipment supports it.
Configure the 2nd AirPort Express (AX) [formerly "Remote"] to join the wireless network provided by the first one. Follow the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Asking for password for keychain access, but won't accept my password... What's up with this?

Restarted my MacBook just now and it's got a continuous stream of pop ups asking for password for keychain access, won't accept my password, won't go away (cancel), any suggestions.

    Hello Al323,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Keychain Access on your Mac.  I found a couple of articles I suggest for the issue you described.
Your keychain uses your the same password as your login password.  If it is not accepting that password, I recommend running the Keychain First Aid using the steps in this article:
Mac OS X 10.6: Solving problems with keychains
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7296
If you are still repeatedly seeing a prompt to enter your Keychain Access password, you may need to reset your keychain.  This will create a new keychain so any saved passwords on the old keychain will not be available, and you will need to enter them when accessing sites for the first time again.  Follow the steps in the article below to create a new keychain:
OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password

  • Trouble syncing Wi-Fi network passwords via Keychain

I'm having a few issues getting my iPhone, iPad and my MacBook Pro to correctly sync Wi-Fi network passwords via iCloud Keychain – it's sporadic at the best of times.
I've had this happen in the past and sometimes resetting the keychain (as well as the saved networks on my devices) fixes the issue. However, at present, I do not wish to force a reset as I do not think it should be necessary for the functionality to work.
I recently joined a friend's Wi-Fi network at his home on my iPhone.  Hours later, my iPad (a cellular model) hadn't connected to the network; I had to manually re-enter the details.  Additionally, when I got home, I noticed my MacBook Pro didn't list the network in Keychain Access or the Network pref pane.  All the devices run the either OS X 10.10.2 or iOS 8.1.3.  iCloud Keychain is correctly setup on all three devices, and I can confirm credit card information and logins sync fine – I've just created a new login, and a fake credit card and this propogated to the other two devices.  Deleting it on another correctly removed it from the original on which it was created.
Any ideas here? Can't work out why Safari data syncs, but not Wi-Fi information.

    Hello Brianquery,
I do not know of a Smartprint line of products. Are you referring to the Photosmart or Officejet 5510?
You could use this link to find your printer:
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html
If you locate the product you're using just type airprint in the search field. If it is not found or it is not compatible you should also check for ePrint capabilities.
    I work with HP.

You need to restart the iMac and hold down the Command and R keys immediately.
You will then have the utilities drop down and you choose Terminal
    When Terminal opens, type exactly:
    resetpassword
    and press Return.
When the Reset Password window opens, select the user for which you want to change the password.
Enter the new password twice, and then click Save.
    Accept the next dialog window,
    And then Apply
When finished click the apple at the left side of the menu bar, and the Restart.
