Keyframing filters in FCP

Thanks for the replies everyone to my earlier post re: FCP/AE workflow. I see that I will need 3rd-party support in order to realize the benefit of a Final Cut Pro/After Effects workflow. Have another question. What are the kinds of filters that you can keyframe in FCP but not in FCE? And are there many filters in FCP that are not included w/ FCE? As I deal mainly w/ animation as opposed to footage of live video I am trying to justify the investment in Final Cut Studio 2 in terms of it being a benefit to me as an animator. I currently use FCE 3.5 (which includes versions of SoundTrack and LiveType) and After Effects CS3 plus other graphics programs. I would love to be able to work within DVD Studio Pro as iDVD is so limiting as an authoring program but am not sure how much I will benefit from the standpoint of what I do by switching from FCE to FCP. This is what I am trying to nail down.

I'm betting many (most) FCP users have never opened a copy of Final Cut Express and so wouldn't be able to tell you the difference in the effects/keyframe handling even if there was any ... I'm one of those users for the most part (at least, its been a very long time since I last saw FCE in action and its changed a lot since way back then) but I'll hazard a guess that barring a very few exceptions, like FCP's 3-way color corrector vs FCE's 2-way color corrector, then there is little to no difference whatsoever.
The real difference between FCE and FCP these days is less about effects and how they are handled and more about pro workflow features like timecode display, batch capture, multicam editing and media management tools, and most significantly, FCP's wide ranging camera native and intermediate format support.
If you work in stop motion animation then you can maybe sell yourself on the idea of working with a better higher quality HD or SD intermediate format such as ProRes instead of the limited codec choice offered by FCE.

  • Filters for FCP

Are there any sites that I could download filters for FCP such as grainy old film look, and a way to put a black halo around the video like you may see in the movie The Illusionist. The edges fade to a black and its in a oval shape around the video. Let me know.

A shaped soft edge vignette (as opposed to a simple
round darkening of the extremities) can be prepared
in Photoshop to the pixel count of your image.
I'm doing this in HDV a lot recently.
    In that frame size, I make a 1440 x 1080 pixel
rectangle and have PS adjust it for HDV aspect. There
are quite a few ways of shaping the frame. Paint,
    blur selection and invert, etc.
When you have a frame you like, import it into FCP as
a JPEG or as a PS layer with a Blending mode already
in place. Float that above your image or sequence and
make the Blending mode Multiply, for instance.
    Instant shaped frame.
A similar path can matte fancy titles, crawls and
    stuff.
Thanks Peter. I had an idea similar to that just was too lazy to do it. Thanks I will take your advice and make a vinette in photoshop. Do you have a link where I could preview your videos? You can see my videos at web.mac.com/sxeseis

  • Keyframing filters on pictures problem

I am keyframing filters starting at beginning of pic at 0 to 100% at end of picture. When the filter starts to kick in, it shifts the image a half an inch up and the picture stays in the same place. This is very distracting because you see two faces, etc. Is there any way to keep the filter from moving the original picture image?
    Doug

Go to the Sequence->Render menus and make sure all render types are checked, then render the Sequence. See if the problem still exists after that then report back with the results.

  • How do I keyframe filters?

I'm trying to get a sepia filter to fade in.
I've scoured the .PDF manual for info about keyframing filters, but I haven't found anything yet. It's probably right in front of me.

    Thanks for solving my problem...:)
What version of FCE is this? You can do this in v3.5,
    not in earlier versions.
Opacity can be keyframed in the timeline. Turn on the
clip overlays with the button in the lower left
corner of the Timeline. A black line will appear at
the top of the clips in the Timeline that controls
the opacity. With the Option key click on the black
line to add a keyframe. Add multiple keyframes and
pull them up and down as needed.

  • Using AE Filters in FCP 4.5 - How?

I pasted AEs Reduce Grain filter into Application Support>FCP System Support>Plug-Ins but when I start up FCP it says it can't find the plug-in for redice grain. Am I doing something wrong?
Help please, I have a shot with nasty noise and it looks good in AE with this filter but I would prefer to use this effect in FCP.
    Thanks out there!
    Paul

Most stock AE filters are incompatable with FCP.
Do the work in AE if that filter is 'the one'.

  • Effects/Audio and Video Filters in FCP

Hi, i use FCP 7.0 and all of a sudden, the effects files went missing, i mean the tab is present and it shows all the folders, of video transitions/filters and of audio and all the master templates, but now all of the drop down menu files are gone.??

Check Effect Availabilty and see whether Recommend or All is checked.

  • Motion filters in FCP

I'm trying to give some live footage a cartoon look using Ben Balser's technique, but I just installed Motion 2.1 on my Mac Pro (OS 10.4.8) restarted, booted up FCP 5.1.2 and still the Motion filters don't appear in my effects browser. What am I not doing right?

I'm not in front of 5.1.2 now, but under the effects menu, down near the bottom, there is an option to 'turn on' the Motion effects using FXPlug. You can select user, and all, and other options. To see which one turns on all the effects, check the effects tab in the browser and you should see double ups on the basic effects, with FXPlug next to the ones coming in from Motion.
    Good luck!

  • Video filters for FCP 5.1

    Hey everybody-
I'm sort of new to FCP, and have a question about filters.
I've tested out all the video filters in version 5.1, but none of them create the effects I am looking for-- little color, almost pale looking.
Am I able to create this effect on FCP, or must I use a filter on my actual camera lens? I'm using a canon xl2...
Below are some shots from movies that replicate the look I'm going for:

  • Mattias filters and FCP-5

Does anyone know if the excellent free Mattias filters will work happily with FCP-5
I've e-mailed Mattias at his site but have unfortunately not heard back as yet.
    LEE

Thanks Brendan for making up for my omission.
Randy, thanks - but alas I don't have FCP-5 yet. I'm working on a project that I know will be revisited in about 6 months or so, and by then I could well have upgraded to 5 from 4.5 I'd rather not introduce filters and FX that can't be replicated at a later date, so I'm trying to get an idea of compatability now.
I've been told by Graeme that his Nattress filters, (Film 2.1 and 2.5.1) are compatable with 4.5 and 5
Makes me wonder if the plug-in requirements for each FCP version are the same and so making all plug-ins upwards compatible...?
I ask the question because someone I know who had FCP-3 had to ditch a lot of her filters when she upgraded to FCP-4.5
    Thoughts or experiences anyone?

  • Audio Filters in FCP

I just recorded something in the ol' garage with my XH-A1 and I do not have my shotgun mic yet. (I know) Anyway, I was just pondering to see if anyone knew of a Audio Filter that could condense the Echo/Noise? I dont know if that makes sense but thought I would try. Nick

  • Updating Final Cut Studio 2.01 and workflow between FCP and AE

Hi. I am currently working in FCE 3.5 and am considering purchasing Final Cut Studio 2.01 (new and sealed) as opposed to the latest version since I am running a PowerPC G5. Am I assured of being able to download all the updates for Final Cut Pro 6 and exactly which version would be the latest and final one? Was there ever an FCP v6.5? I do mainly animation/motion graphics and work in After Effects (along w/ Flash, Carrara, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). I understand that the workflow between FCP (as opposed to FCE) and AE is greatly enhanced. Can someone give me an idea of what advantages this new workflow will offer in terms of what I'll be able to accomplish that I can't do now w/ FCE? Also, any other comments on how FCP (as compared to FCE) will benefit me as an animator will be greatly appreciated. Lastly, am I correct in assuming that I will be able to open my FCE 3.5 project files in FCP 6 but not visa versa? Thanks. Jack.

  • Keyframing on Final Cut Express 2

Can you keyframe a Gaussian Blur onto a piece of video so that the clip starts out in focus and eventually becomes blurred on Final Cut Express 2?
When I select the clip I want to do this with, the keyframe set tabs up in the viewer do not show up.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

You can't keyframe filters in FCE unfortunately (that's a feature of FCP only).
You could duplicate your video onto the track above and apply the blur to that at final desired value and then keyframe the opacity of this clip to fade the effect in. It won't get you exactly the effect you desire, but maybe near enough.
If you've got the cash you can buy some keyframeable filters from CHV: http://www.chv-plugins.com/keyframe.html

  • Wide angle correction plug-ins I'd like to see in FCP

It with some frustration I learn how Adobe Premiere's CS3 is beginning to overtake FCP in terms of useful plug-ins. One very useful plug-in in Premiere is "unpop" (not sure if that's it's actual name) that corrects the barrel distortion on wide angle adapters to give your footage a more Hollywood wide angel look, straightening out those curved verticals towards the edges of the frame. That's a plug-in I'd like to see FCP adopt in the next upgrade. Whilst they're at it, why not add PhotoShop's lens correction filter that can remove/lessen chromatic aberration? Anyone using wide angle lens would find these effects filters indispensable.
Unless of course anyone knows of a (cheap!) set of effects plug-ins that can already do these things?
    Here's hoping.

It with some frustration I learn how Adobe Premiere's CS3 is beginning to overtake FCP
    in terms of useful plug-ins.
Such stuff is all relative. Apple is not going to to provide a filter for everything and your need for barrel distortion correction is not anywhere on my list of things to add or to fix in FCP.
There are literally hundreds of plugs available for FCP. All you have to do is invest time to find them, time to test them, and money to buy them.
But there will always be interesting things available for After Effects that won't work in Motion; cool filters for FCP that aren't available for Premiere, stuff you can do in Photoshop that would be silly to have available inside Aperture.

  • Magic Bullet Plug-in & FCP

    Hey,
I've got a slight problem that I hope isn't a really big problem.
I installed some "Magic Filter" Plug-in filters into FCP,
and they loaded into my plug-in folder fine,
and look great in my effects folder,
but when I go to use some of those newly installed filters...
    my FCP application closes out.
The literature said that the filters were for FCP4.5 & up,
and I am presently running FCP-5.1.4,
but could that be where the problem is?
Are these plug-in filters too old to be using?
Has anyone had problems like this after installing additional filter plug-ins?
If so what do I need to do to remedy this?
Some of the filters are pretty cool, but if it is gonna cause problems with FCP,
then I don't need them that bad.
    Thanx,
    Todd

Go to www.redgiantsoftware.com and look for any updates they might have. I seem to recall that you needed to get updates for the Magic Bullet Suite in order for them to work with the most current version of FCP.
I know I had to, but a while back.
