Keying pug-ins

I'm doing a lot of blue/green keying and some keys aren't very blue - or green! I'd like a way to smooth edges, remove artifacts and provide easy light wrap etc. I've been looking at various plug-ins from companies like Red Giant and Boris. Can anyone recommend the best set for Motion - that can also be used in AE as well?
I hope this isn't unethical to ask this on a forum like this?

I second DV Matte Pro. It's excellent with low or high quality sources. I don't know if it works with AE, but certainly in FCP/Motion.

DIRECTLY FROM FAQ:
The memory controller of AMD64 does not officially support 400mhz speed on two doublesided sticks of RAM, or on 3 sticks of RAM (regardless of single/double side), however this board seems to be very tolerant concerning this, change your ram setting from auto to 200, and see if it helps - if not, try with other RAM, there's no guarantee it will be able to function at 400MHz.
Please note that this is a limitiation in the AMD 64 CPU's memory-controller, and not a limit in the motherboard!
CAN I GET DUAL CHANNEL WITH THREE STICKS OF RAM? IF NOT, then there is NO POINT in 939 because it would be single channel JUST LIKE 754...

Visualizer Plug-Ins

Recently I downloaded some Visualizer Plug-Ins from the Apple website, placed the .bundle files in the iTunes Plug-ins folder, but I cannot find directions on how to use them. Please help.

That's correct. Unlike scripts, which appear in the menu without a program restart, you have to restart iTunes before visualizer pug-ins become active.

Chromakey Plug-ins

I'm looking for kid-friendly, reliable chroma key plug-ins that can be used for pre-iMovie 09 versions (also for Movie Maker). Most importantly, they have to be free to use.
If anyone knows any or is willing to create such a program, I'd love to hear about it.

Chroma Key--iMovie w/3rd party vs. FCP vs. FCE

Apple's pro audio and video tech support department can't seem to answer this question and they thought someone here in the FCP forum might be able to give me some guidance.
I'm an independent trainer and I've been trying to put a "simple" head and shoulders shot of me in a nice backdrop using iMovie HD and various 3rd party green screen / Chroma Key plug ins. The results have been disappointing. I evenly lit a green background (a piece of green fabric), shot the video, and adjusted the tolerances. The background dropped out ok, but so did tiny bits of me, and the green was still visible along the edges of me. Any further adjustments would make me transparent. I know it may be a lighting issue (or the fact that I'm using a generic green cloth background), but I'm a fine art photographer as well and I'm being pretty careful about the lights.
Are there any pros who do Chroma Keying who can tell me if buying FCE or FCP will solve this problem? Does FCE have a dramatically improved way to accomplish this green screen thing or is it likely using the same math as the iMovie 3rd party plug-ins?
Really, I'm hoping that FCE will have the same features in this area, since FCP is out of my range right now and hard to justify since I only want to do this one thing.
If I buy FCE, will I be missing some project-critical Chroma Key features only found in FCP that will force me to upgrade or are the features in this category identical?
For example, a tutorial on Chroma Keys for the Pro version says that it has a Chroma Smoothing 4:1:1 filter that might help when using mini-dv cameras.
Any thoughts on this from people who understand both versions of Final Cut and get good Chroma Keys would be greatly appreciated. Any other approches or software to get this done would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Bob - this is a copy of the answer I sent you in the FCE Forum.
I have never used iMovie for Chromakey as I believe that once you start buying third party filters etc. you can soon end up paying as much as if you had bought FCE outright!
FCE has numerous additional features (besides the Smoothing Filter) for fine-tuning the picture to get rid of colour fringing and other extraneous nasties. I would imagine that iMovie plugins would not have as many - though I do not know that for a fact.
As Tom says FCE and FCP are virtually identical in most respects. FCP's main differences are connected with the way professionals work - like feeding video from several cameras simultaneously etc. Most of us can manage without that!

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

You can select a jpeg and try Ctrl r. If it doesn't work, let's do a reset. I didn't ask, but you are using Bridge CC?
Start Adobe Bridge and immediately press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) until the Reset Settings dialog box appears.
Select all three options--Reset Preferences, Reset Standard Workspaces, and Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache--and then click OK.

in code view and typed "shift+i" to make a capital "I", instead it
would paste from the clipboard.
I finally figured out what was happening. I compared the

through until I came across the diff:

There was a diff in the "platform=" tags. The orig stated
[platform="win"], my config stated [platform=""] (nothing in
between the ""'s). So, I reset the platform tag to be
[platform="win"] in my settings and then relaunched dreamweaver. It
fixed the problem.
Not sure how this occurred, but it works now.

Is there a way to track down the cause of crashes in SAFARI?

Not long ago I was able to eliminate one type of crash I had been having in SAFARI by following a suggestion made in this forum. Those crashes, however, were of the type that generated a 'crash report.' So they left a kind of 'paper trail' as to what was causing them.
More recently I have been having frequent crashes that don't result in such reports. These crashes occur apparently randomly when I mouseclick on a link. The spinning beach ball appears on-screen and never leaves.
Is there a way to find out exactly what is causing these crashes?

if something runs fine in another account - one can isolate the cause to one of the plist files in the main acct Home/Library/Preferences/ or possibly an add-on in Home/Library/Internet Pug-Ins or ...Input Managers for example.
If there is the same problem in the new acct - you can discount anything with the main acct user library - plists,caches,plugins,input managers, the whole lot.
A useful tool is Console - found in Applications/Utilities/ keep it running while the 'problem' in question crops up & see if any messages pop up in either the system log or console log. Sometimes these will point straight at the problem area, other times no help at all.

Editing error

I never had problems with htese photos before, but now I am getting the following error when trying to launch either NIK pug-ins or Photoshop CS5 from Aperture:
Editing Error: this image cannot be rendered for editing because aperture dies not support the image format
Anyone familiar with this and how to fix it?

What kind of file is it? (i.e.jpeg, Canon RAW, Nikon RAW etc..)
As a workaround until you get the issue fixed, why not reimport the image from the original file, lift and stamp any adjustments you've made in Aperture, and see if the same problem occurs?

There was some data sent (that I saw from my cell phone provider) at around 7AM one morning while I was in bed. I am concerned as to what this data was and would like to find out if it is possible to trace what the content was? My cell provided indicated that they do not know what type of data it was.

Recommended third party library instruments?

New Apple user here - last used Logic 8 years ago, and while getting to grips with it again, stumbled into the Library instruments.
Was just looking to hook up my old Korg, but now blown away by the Library instruments in Logic - no need for a new Korg.
While many of the sounds are great, I'm finding the strings to be pretty weak. From previous reading on these forums I saw the Vienna Symphonic Library recommended.
I'm presuming this is basically a dedicated set of orchestral instruments for the Logic library? If so, am tempted to go with the Standard Special Edition bundle as it seems an affordable way to get into using it.
However, I'm also looking out for choral and world music sounds, but not sure where to look.
Any pointers and/or recommendations - even keywords for Google searches - would certainly be appreciated.

The orchestral party pug ins you are already looking at are among the best, no question. But for good strings at a reasonable price the IK Multimedia Philharmonik is quite good, don't pay the price you'll see it for... I paid like $300 or so. The Wallander group is making some very good brass, flutes and oboes for a good price as well, you can pay as you go with them as well.
However, if money isn't an object, then you are correct, the Eastwest and the Vienna instrument groups are the industry standard, best as I can tell, an probably for good reason. Good luck- you're gonna have fun.

Download of PDFs Not Working Correctly

Ever since installing Mavericks and the new version of Mail a couple weeks ago, PDFs fill a page in Safari with gobbledygook. Everytime this happens, I try the old trick of holding down the Option key as I start the download. This works maybe 20% of the time. Found a hint elsewhere that upgrading to the current version of Adobe Reader would update key plug-ins in Safari. Did that; did not make any difference. It is also happening under Chrome but much less frequently.
Any ideas, folks, on how to cure this?

Firstly thanks to the people who
offered help. This is what I did and somehow the problem is solved. I installed PSE 8 on my old machine with XP and an old Xerox monitor and it worked OK. I uninstalled PSE 8 from the newer machine on Vista. Made sure all the adobe files for pug-ins had gone then reinstalled. I then tested the screen resolution of my monitor a HP w1907v, smaller resolutions made no difference but opening it up to max did. When I wish to open a RAW file click open click the photograph and in the bottom file format box make sure you are asking for RAW files to be opened and 'bingo'. This upgrade for PSE 8 has the latest CameraRaw on it but the problem was there from the first installation so perhaps it is a combination of screen resolution and making sure the file format for opening is specified. So after hours of effort a satisfactory outcome. I probably confused the issue by installing the plug-in when there was no need. PSE 8 will last me a long time!!!
