Keynote 2 Advanced questions

Hi,
I have been using keynote 2 for 3 months and love it. I am a convert from pp. I do have some issues with keynote. There is no slide sorter view. I do many lectures and this would be helpful, yes I know about hiding and indenting. The other issues are even more impt to me. Is there a way to shrink the entire program after it has been created like in pp? Next question is how to take a picture that has a black background and make it a tranparency like in pp?
Also, there is no custom motion path like in pp, this is impt to me in some of the more advanced presentations and points I am trying to make. The overall appearance and fluidity of Keynote 2 is exceptional. I do like it a lot and also luv the custom backgrounds i have attained. Any help would be very much appreciated!!

I mean that when i build the presentation and it is 100 mb large, in pp i can click on a slide, click on the picture in the slide and i can shrink the overall size of the presentation down to 15 mb large. This helps in not crashing or bogging down.

Word 2011 for Mac: Advanced question regarding the navigation pane--aka sidebar

Hi everyone--
I'm a new Mac owner, with a Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, with 8GB RAM, 256GB storage. I'm operating on the latest OS (Maverick), freshly purchased from the Apple store today (July 5, 2014).
Can you help me figure out if there is some way, in Word 2011 for Mac, to use the navigation pane (aka Sidebar) to click and drag entire sections of the document to a new location? This was basic (advanced, but fundamental) functionality in every version of Word I've used in recent years on Windows machines, and it is the critical reason I purchased Word instead of using one of a dozen free options. My job involves managing and editing large documents--from 2500 to 90,000 words--and the navigation pane/sidebar is crucial to my sanity.
Previously, I would open the navigation pane and it would show me the structure of my document based on the Heading types. I could click on a heading (say, a chapter title), inside the navigation pane, and drag it to a new location elsewhere in the document. So simple to rearrange the structure of large documents this way. Now, in the Word 2011 for Mac, I can call up the navigation pane (now called the "sidebar") and view the structure of the doc, but I can't actually click and drag anything in the navigation pane.
Other than this, so far my switch to Mac has gone swimmingly. I love the machine, and am amazed at how much cleaner and easier it is to set up than Windows machines. I'm so frustrated that I even have to interface with Microsoft any more, but this one piece of functionality is critical to me.

Dear Heather,
I don't know the specific answer to your question.
But as a new Mac owner, you should make sure that you are using the very latest version of Word 2011 for Mac.
My recommendation, if you haven't already done this, is to open Word and do Help > Check for Updates from Word's menu, and install any updates Microsoft has released.
They typically issue updates once or twice a month.

Slide Timing / Advancing Question

Hi All,
I'm relatively new to Captivate (using version 6) and I've been looking all over to find an answer to this question. Basically, I am creating an interactive user guide, and I have certain slides with clickable buttons that display text captions when clicked. I am worried that the timing requirement for each slide is going to make my guide not work the way it should. For example, the person viewing the guide should be able to stay on one slide AND click on the buttons to display the text at his/her own pace. However, once time runs out on the slide, if all of the buttons haven't been clicked, then all of the captions haven't been displayed, and the user then has to replay the slide.
My question is...is there any way to allow the user to spend as much time as they need on a slide, clicking different buttons to display text captions and ONLY have the slide advance when they click the "Next" button that I have created?
Hope I'm making sense here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Newbie to keynote; some questions and some observations about this group

Hello, my attn was called to this group. I have seen some impressive presentations in keynote so maybe it is time to switch.
From what?
I do a lot of presentations. I use acrobat. Prepare my page in whatever app is best for the job; print to pdf; include fonts. By using the app of my choice I get just what I want in my slide.
I can readily arrange slides in sorter in acrobat. Allows minimal animation, by, say, preparing the full slide, make copies, and delete progressively. sort to show from the least to the fullest; works for me.
pdf allows touch up text and adding text, which I often think of at the last minute. Drawing an oval or line to point to something. For heavier editing open a slide in illustrator and save as pdf.
So, as I say it works for me. Not glitzy. Certainly pretty easy to produce decent slides.
Most everyone has acrobat on his/her machine, so if I take my presentation on a stick, it can work, nicely, cross platform. Very few occasions when that didnt work.
So I would like to hear folks' experiences. Can you take your presentation on a stick and show it on someone else's computer?
What about posting presentations. I generally put my pdf on my web page, giving the audience the url; seeems to work fine. Again I ask for experience.
Seems like quite a learning curve for keynote. And I browsed about 4 pages of discussion on this board before posting. I saw mostly complaints and problems, and not all that many solutions. And very few raves.
So, I would welcome some testimonials.
PS I dont want to do anything so glitzy that folks will come up to me after the talk and say nice animations; better they talk to me about the substance of my talk.

Welcome to the forums, troglodyte.
If you want a testimonial, I think that Keynote is hands-down the easiest to use presentation tool, and produces by far the best-looking results. It is far ahead of PowerPoint.
Keynote produced beautiful results, even when converted to PDF, as it has very nice graphics features (e.g., drop shadows, masking, transparency). If you are most comfortable with PDF, and don't need animations or transitions, then Keynote still has a lot to offer. That said, much of the "wow-factor" of Keynote comes from its lovely and sophisticated transitions and animations.
(These features needn't be just eye-candy, either, as they can serve to emphasize points and help unify certain material. For example, I use transitions that are more obvious, such as the "Doorway", to mark major changes of topic in my presentations, and more subtle ones, like "Dissolve", to change between related slides. This "grammar" of transitions helps to make the presentation more comprehensible.)
Keynote is not cross-platform, so you can't put a native Keynote presentation on a memory stick and be assured that it will work on someone else's computer. However, PDFs make from Keynote should function just fine. Alternatively, you can use various of the other exporting options in Kenote, including Quicktime, Flash, and PowerPoint, to provide more cross-platform compatibility than Keynote does (each of these conversions has its own limitations however). And several of these formats are also appropriate for web deployment.
I find Keynote extremely easy to use. Do realize that these forums are primarily intended for troubleshooting, so you won't find a lot of generic compliments to the application.

Advanced Question about Sub Domain and eCommerce

Question for you experts out there. I have a company, with 5 divisions, that is wanting a website. The parent company, as well as the 5 divisions would like to have their own separate product listings in an ecommerce site. Can I set up business catalyst to have parentcompany.com as well as division1.parentcompany.com, division2.parentcompany.com etc, and have them share one ecommerce by having their separate products listed as categories? Also, can I style each category differently to match the particular divisions? Thanks in advance, I know this one is a little confusing but I appreciate all your help out there.

You can have sub-domains within BC that can have their own start page. Then for the e-commerce you would just need to give each catalog a different template that you can use CSS to style differently. The Overall Layout will have to be the same, but the look can be changed up to accommodate each division.

Keynote - font question

Apologies, I'm using Keynote for the first time, can anyone advise...
If I prepare a keynote doc, save it as Powerpoint for my client and pass it along, will the fonts be ok that I have used, I mean will they show up ok if the presentation is shown on any other computer (like a PDF?)

How to keynote presentation question

I will build a keynote presentation for a presentation at univeristy. My MBP will be connected to a external screen for the public. Now I am wondering if there is a way so that I can have also my personal notes to look at on my MBP, but they will not show on the public screen?

2 Keynote chart questions

I'm trying to build a series of 14 different data charts in Keynote. I'm having problems creating two...
Chart 1 (Line-format): This is for "Average Time" spent on a helpdesk call. For the Y-axis, I can't figure out a way to input data in a Minute:Second format (the X-axis is the months of the year).
For example:
Jan - 5:32
Feb - 6:38
Mar - 2:43, etc.
Chart 2 (Column-format): Ideally, I'd like to compare two different data types on a single chart. This for "Server Availability"... the X-axis are the months, with the left-side Y-axis being % of availability, and the right-side Y-axis featuring number of hours unavailable.
For example:
Jan: 99.77% availability/1.68 hours unavailable
Feb: 99.62% availability/2.77 hours unavailable
Mar: 99.70% availability/2.19 hours unavailable, etc.

Welcome to the discussions, Unisphere.
Keynote's charting abilities are relatively rudimentary, and I don't believe it can handle either of the two chart types you want. Your best bet is to do up the charts in another application and paste them in. A post on another thread mentioned the freeware application Plot, which will definitely do two Y-axes plots, and may be able to handle time-based plots as well -- this might be a simple solution.

basically I want to query a database VIEW to pull data, can you please answer my questions:
1) Can I specify variable in the select statement like select * from myView where createTime<today and flag="true"? today is a variable for today's date. Or some other variable we can define in PI?
2) Since generally view is not updatable, so what I should enter in the update statement? Let's say the view is based on three tables, one table named TableA has the field flag. So I guess I can update the flag directly in the TableA. However how can I make sure the the records created between the select and the update are not marked as false? I know if select and update is made to the same table, PI would make sure the update will be done on the sames records resulted from the select. However in my case, select is done on view while update is done on table. How can I be sure the flag is changes only for he processed records?
3) In my scenario, I need to initially load 100mb data from JDBC adapter, would it be problem with this hug amount of data in the JDCB CC?

Illustrator / swatch pattern movement issue? (*advanced question)

In Illustrator CS3 I often make new swatch pattern to use as a fill. When I flll an object w/ that swatch, then copy that object, then paste it into a new file, the pattern has moved inside the object. When I paste the object within the original file I copied it, the pattern doesn't move.
How do I lock the pattern from moving or prevent it from moving? (Apple+ F or B) doesn't work.
I realized I could rename the file, save it, and make changes, as a workaround solution. I'm looking for something more efficient, however.
Much appreciated, and props to whoever knows the answer!

I realize several years have passed since this question was asked, but incase someone in the community is stil having this problem, I saved my original with the pattern as a pdf, then placed it into the new artboard/file. Before I settled on the pdf solution, I rasterized, flattened, expanded, jpg'd & png'd to no avail, they all sucked when placed into the new larger artboard bc either the pattern continued to move or the results were pixelated, even w high res.
I was making business cards, and my original artboard was 2x3.5, and I had already painstakingly moved, scaled & recolored each pattern to fit the 2x3 artboard. Then when I went to paste it into a full size 8.5x11 ai template the pattern realigned itself to the 8.5x11 page, grr.
I'm using cs5, btw. And when you try this, the pdf preview will look crazy, but no worries, it places just fine.

Iweb and keynote tricky question!

Is there a way to make a presentation in keynote with hyperlinks and transitions and publish that in iweb?i would be very thankful if somebody can describe the procedure...if there is one of course

There's a few things to remember, but I can only think of one right now.
It would be good if QuickTime offered a "Loading" screen by default or allowed you to create one without tools like LiveStage Pro, because interactive presentations with links back and forth have to load completely and, until they do, the first slide will play over and over.
The one thing to remember is that you ALWAYS want to LINK using NON-transitional slides if you're going to a slide that isn't the next one. ie, going from slide 2 - 3, fine, no problem, link however you want with whatever transition you want. Going from slide 2-5, as long as you make sure slide 5 doesn't START with a transition (from slide 4), you're good.

Keynote/Powerpoint question

How can I save a powerpoint presentation on my mac to be viewed on whiteboard?

Simplest way would be to run the PowerPoint file directly on the computer at the school if it is a Windows machine and the computer has PowerPoint or PPt Viewer installed.
If it is a Mac computer, use the original Keynote file if Keynote is installed.
Use a PDF file exported from Keynote as a second method of playback.
Trying to import Powerpoint into a computer with an unkown interactive host programme will end in disaster as not all host programmes can import Powerpoint. Those that can import PowerPoint are very specific about the version of PowerPoint used.

Glitch? Keynote advances on its own

A few months ago I experienced some odd Keynote behavior in the middle of a presentation.
Around halfway into a show, I hit the space bar to trigger the next bullet point and, even though there were stops programmed, Keynote started running through the show on its own, going from slide to slide as if I were continuously hitting the space bar. I got it to snap out of it by accessing the first slide (hitting "1+return")
I tried for a long time to duplicate this problem but nothing worked (including resting my finger on the space bar for 10 seconds).
Today, it happened again when rehearsing for a presentation. This time on a different computer.
Has anyone experienced this?
Now I'm a little nervous during each presentation.

I don't think it could be anything like the virus type, because thats impossible. I would phone apple. Your computer isn't that old and they might have some idea whats going on inside the computer. I agree it does sound scary. Tell us how things go.

1. Why can't the flame effect be played on my Macbook?
2. How can the background music be temporarily stopped while a video file is playing?
3. Is there any way to play a DRMed video file in Keynote?

1. The video card is not sufficiently powerful.
2. It can't -- there is no way to get music to play through a presentation but to be paused for a section of it. One workaround is to create separate presentation for the part prior to the video, the video itself, and the part after the video, and hyperlink these three presentations together as one (putting the music only in the first and last sections).
3. I don't believe there is, even if you own the video.
