I have a very basic smallish spreadsheet with no forumlas, formating, etc and it won't save after the initial save.  When I attempt to save I get this: "Couldn't auto-save document".  I checked the file in Finder and it wasn't modified.
I won't save to CSV or Excel formats either.  I've tried copying and pasting the table into Excel 2007 and no luck.
OSX 10.9.1, Macbook Pro Retina 2012
Any ideas?  I haven't found advice on the Web.  Fortunately I have Excel with VMware and Win7 and Open Office and Libre Office on the Mac side.
    Jim

I saved my work by copying the table to an Open Office spreadsheet.
When quitting Numbers I received this message:
[filename} is on a volume that does not support permanent version storage. The filename was my file's of course.  I tried to save this file on my MBP SSD and on a network hard drive that is working fine for everything else.

  • When attempting to save a numbers doc, get message, " Couldn't auto-save document."

When attempting to save a Numbers checklist document, I get the message "Couldn't auto-save document." What does this mean and why can't I save it to my hard drive?

I have exactly the same problem. It seems like a very rare problem though because there is so little written about it, and it is a real show stopper!!
I also had the additional problem that I could not export anything as PDF.
Your workaround did not work for me, but a different one did. I simply clicked on the red "close" button on the top left of the window, and the usual dialog box asked me if I wanted to save. I said yes, and it saved! I can even export the PDF now.
Extremely bizarre, and I must say not a solution I would rely on in a long term basis.

  • Pages V5 COULDN'T AUTO-SAVE DOCUMENT error message

Why am I getting this error message when I attempt to save a document, duplicate a document, move a document--"Couldn't Auto-Save Document" I cannot save the document. I originally opened this document from the server computer to my laptop, made changes on the laptop at remote office and now I cannot save it, even to a new location on the laptop.

    Hi.
I was just now suddenly afflicted by this problem.
Have new macbook pro retina - iOS X 10.9.2.
    Everything is up to date.
Even Pages is up to date. checked it (of course), as soon as I started getting the error message every time I tried to save. Even tried saving or 'exporting' to Word, PDF...still same message.
Now...I recall that any time an app is 'acting up' (i.e. not responding the way it should)...it usually means that it either needs updating, or it has some sort of 'bug' to it.
If it needs updating...then simply update it. I checked that option...and got message that Pages is indeed up to date.
So...opted to simply 'force quit' pages (as well as quit many other still-open apps that I wasn't using at the moment...to try to cut down on excess memory being used...thinking that may be part of the problem.
Also...thought that maybe my hard disk was getting rather full...so opted also to move all my music, movies & pictures to an external hard disk to free up internal storage space (by eventually deleting all after first backing up to external hard disk)...and then of course finally freeing up all space by emptying the trash.
Then...after force quitting pages (and all other non-used apps at the time)...and still before completing the transfer of all those heavy files to an external hard disk...then I re-opened pages to test it...and 'WHOALA!"...it worked just fine!!!
So...it seems that this was the solution...at least for me at this moment...to simply force quit the renegade app, and then re-start it.
If that didn't work, I was going to simply shut down the computer...and do a complete re-start. That is another option that often times gives a new look to life for apps which are acting up.
OK...just thought to put in my two cents-worth here.
    Hope this helps someone else.
    Regards,
    Balqees Mohammed.

When I try to save a document a message comes up saying "Couldn't auto-save document." How can I fix this? Thank you for your help! - Chip

This is a mean one. I don't have time to try and find the cause, but at least some answers to your questions, to hopefully shed some more light on this.
Where was the original destination? iCloud folder.
On another drive? Tried to Save as... to Hard Drive (also changing name of file), always get the same non-descript short Error "Couldn't auto-save document." (slides down from top with a yellow warning triangle). Status to the right of document name is "Not Saved".
Another Server? No access at this time.
I also tried File, Revert to, Browse all versions, to check what I'd be losing. Saw I wasn't losing much and selected the last version and pressed Restore - same error. In the end I just quit Pages and re-opened. The document opened with the last few edits missing (but with the status "Edited" next to the name). I re-edited and could save. Good old habit of saving often.

  • Pages 5.1 giving a 'Couldn't auto-save document' error on OSX Mavericks 10.9.1.

I was working on a class assignment, which was stored on iCloud and was working great until I noticed that instead of the ' -Edited' tag beside the file name stood a peculiar 'Not Saved' tag. When I tried to manually save the updated version, it's giving me a dialogue box error saying 'Couldn't Autosave document'. I am able to work through the document and make changes and print, but it isn't saving. Even if I try to export its giving me the same Dialogue box error. Please advice, this is the first time I have come across such a problem in using Pages in the last 7 years.
This is on a mid - 2010 Macbook Pro 13".
Thank you for considering my question.

Bah!!! I have only just experienced this issue (along with a billion other issues in Pages, but I'll leave that for another day!).
Thank you to all the great suggestions here, which didn't quite work, but led me to something that did.
I tried this and it didn't quite work:
"Hi! There seems to be a workaround for this (I've had this problem too, you'd think Apple'd sort it out?!?!)
At the top of your Pages document is the name of your document. Hover your mouse over this briefly and a drop down arrow will appear. From here you can name the document, give it a Tag and choose the save destination. Click this drop down arrow, and select your save destination from another drop down that will apear. After you have clicked on your selected save destination, click away from the drop down. Then, simply save (Cmd+S OR navigate to file>save) and it will have saved for you!"
    But this worked for me:
I clicked on the drop down arrow, like suggested above, and changed the document name. Then I clicked on the 'Where' drop down menu and went right down the list and clicked on the 'other...' choice right at the bottom of the list. I chose a different location and then clicked 'Move'
For some unknown reason this worked for me where the other suggestion didn't quite work.
I've had to find so many work arounds like this in Pages recently, which you shouldn't have to do!
The only reason why I am persisting with pages is it save my clickable links when exported to PDF, where the Word program doesn't.
I hope these issues get sorted before I thrown the computer out the window due to pure frustration!

  • Pages, Numbers and Keynotes doesn't allow me to save documents

I created a new document in pages, numbers or keynote and, when trying to save it to my documents folder, it shows me "Couldn't auto-save document".
I've tried with different folders with the same results.
There's no problem when saving to iCloud.
I had installed iWork'09 and moved it to another folder.
Versions are: Pages 5.2.2, Numbers 3.2.2 with OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks in a iMac 27-inch late 2009

Are you running any anti-virus, anti-malware on your Mac? If so, disable this a/v software.
If not, I would suggest the following:
Boot into Recovery (hold command+R at the chime)
Run Disk Utility (verify/repair permissions, and verify drive) on your boot drive
    Reboot normally
Boot into safe mode ( you can do this during the above reboot)
At boot chime, press and hold shift key until horizontal progress bar appears
At login prompt, press and hold shift key, after your password, but before clicking right arrow to log in.Press and hold shift key until your Desktop appears
    Reboot normally
Re-evaluate if Pages auto-save failure dialog gone.

  • Auto-save document is where?

Pages quit unexpectedly. Now I want to find the auto-save document. Where is it?

Pages does not auto save. It will save a previous copy saved, if you set it to in Preferences.
You need to install a 3rd part application like ForeverSave which comes in a free Lite version, and works for all OSX applications.
Best is to learn to save by habit whenever you get to a point you don't want to lose.
+command s+ is easy to remember and to do.

  • Any way to make pages auto save documents while I am working on them?

Is there a way to make pages auton save documents that I am working on?

Are you really using OSX 10.4.11?
Lion and Mountain Lion have auto save.
For older Systems install ForeverSave Lite.

  • Auto save: document will not open in

When I went to save a document for the first time, Appleworks crashed on me. I immediately went into my auto saved file to retrieve the doc but got an "unexpected end of file" message. What does that mean? How come other document will open from the autosaved file but the one I NEED will not? Is there a way that I can get it to open (tweak it)? I tried dragging into a new doc both in Appleworks 6 and Text/Edit programs but I get a message that says: 'this document cannot be opened in Appleworks'. Why not since that's the program I used to create the x#$@ thing in the first place? Am I SOL?
I am desperate. I appreciate your help.
    thanks,
    Jane

Native InDesign files are not backward compatible for any versions, so you cannot open later version files in any earlier versions.
You can ask the originator of the file to export to .inx from CS4 and you will get a file that will open in CS3 (but not earlier -- .inx is good only in the version that created it and one back), but it will be missing anything done with CS4-only features, and there is a strong probablility that lines of text will wrap differently due to differences inthe text engines. If the file never needs to return to CS4 this may be acceptable, but it is not a good method for round-tip collaboration. The best solution is everyone working on the same version.

  • Keynote - cannot save document

Hi, anybody knows how to solve this problem? I am creating a keynote document with quite a lot of pictures. After the 3-4 slide I could save the document with no problems. I am in the 11th slide now and suddenly, when I tried to save the document it told me: "Couldn't auto-save document"
I've tried to reduce file to no avail.
If anybody has a good suggestion of what the problem is I'd really appreiciate it. I've been working on it for hours and I am afraid if I close Keynote I would loose the document -

I have 21 slides. Latest everything (OS, Keynote etc...). No problems until I added some more pictures and now I get the same message.
Every time I try to save my file, I get "Couldn't auto-save document".
Honestly, this is so pitiful, by a mega rich company that tells us continually that they produce amazing stuff.  Yes, Keynote truly is amazing. Powerpoint does not have these amazing problems. What is auto-save doing anyhow?  There are no setting for auto-save, nothing in the help files. I am not asking it to auto-save. I just click "save" but uncle Apple knows best, and fails. Sounds like my wife's iPad iOS 8.0.2 in which Pages is really unstable.  I guess Apple cannot afford proper testers.....?
I can duplicate the document and it seems to save that new file fine.

Very well. Try this with your Mac:
    Open "new.psd" in Preview
    File > Save
new.psd becomes new.png  If the extension was correct, Preview would not have changed it.
it now opens in Photoshop  You can download it here.  ("Save image As...)
Simply put, you had the wrong extension.

It's perfectly odd to assume that an application deliver this or that feature.
It's perfectly wrong to write that "most every Apple - heck most every modern product does it automatically".
TextEdit did that but iLife apps didn't and I'm not sure that Apple's Pro apps were doing that before Lion.
More, some users are ranting in several threads against the Autosave and Versions features introduced by Lion.
