Keynote 6 Colorizing

As creative director of a prominent design agency I implemented Keynote as our main design tool years ago. Basic objects created with Photoshop and Illustrator could easily be manipulated in keynote. Sizes, hues and tints of jpg or png files could be altered and evaluated directly in Keynote.Text and vectorized symbols could be added in a similar fashion. Basic elements could even be designed in Keynote by using basic Keynote tools, shapes, gradients, etc.
Using Keynote as our main design tool has had fantastic results, and we've all been waiting for new utdates to this fantastic product.
Now I've checked out Keynote 6, and found that a couple of the most versatile tool have been changed:
• Colorizing: In the previous version, a jpg could be colorized in a rich way. A grey or desaturated image could be turned blazing red, grassy green, shining yellow or deep purple, or any other color. With Keynote 6 this possibility has disappeared. Although Temperature and Tint still are adjustable, they don't reach far enough. I think the Keynote folks have only had photographic images in need for slight adjustments in mind.
• Placeholder: When evaluating variations of a design, the image placeholder function is priceless. The new Keynote's placeholder function is limited to images from iPhoto, music & movies. All this can be solved by adding an option to place the current copied image to the placeholder.

Hello gradinc,
It is hard to say what this could be. If you are still getting prompts to upgrade Keynote, it may be trying to open an older version. I would try and delete Keynote and then download it again. I would also try to open it within Launchpad or opening it directly from the Mac App Store to see if the error comes up again. If it does let me know.

  • Keynote and Color Management

Does anyone know whether Keynote uses color management? I am using the program to project images of famous artwork for educational purposes and want to make sure that the images look the same as they did when edited in Photoshop. If there are color settings to choose from, where would they be found?
thanks in advance for any wisdom

According to my own testing on Keynote '08, the answer is yes. Images in Keynote are the same as in Safari, which is color managed. Images are different in QuickTime, which is not color managed. I also would like to see definitive answer, though.

  • Keynote 08 color problem

I have a macbook pro and installed keynote 08 on it and have the following peculiar problem.
When I try to change the color of a graphic/text object, using the color pellete, the pellete (and also the color rectangle
in the inspector window) show the correct color I choose; but the object shows only blue color; as I change the colors,
the object changes only shades of blue; but never shows any other color matching the chosen pellette.
What could be the problem and how should I go about fixing it?

Just thought I would add my voice to the chorus... I am having the same problem.
Also note that this error will prevent you from being able to "Send To">"YouTube" as well.
I am seeing the exact same issues reported here by everyone else. Not sure what update screwed this up, but it was working fine less than a month ago (I do a series of 5 keynote presentations each month and it worked for the first one I did on June 7 but has not worked for the last two I tried).
I am also in need of a fast solution for this. I am pretty much dead in the water till I get a solution going.
My flash export also results in out of sync audio. Do I have to dig up powerpoint?
Also, it looks as if Quicktime is having a hard time with the file. Quicktime suddenly becomes very sluggish (IE: tons of delay when you click on menus or on pause when the keynote export is playing). Quicktime is NOT having these problems with video files from other sources.

  • Keynote PDF Export and Color Profile

I have some color trouble with the pdf-exports of keynote: the color that is shown in the pdf does not correpond with the one in the keynote file. The pdf has more ”milky” colors. Maybe it is a color profile thing. But what profile doese keynote use for the screen? Or does it convert rgb-colors to cmyk? Anyway, how to sync exactly keynote and pdf colors for screen presentations?

There are a few things you can try:
In the PDF export box there is an Image Quality dropdown, where you can choose Good, Better or Best. Which are you using?
Alternatively you can just output the file as a PDF using the Print function. Your profile says you are using Mac OS X 10.4 in which case, in the print window click on the PDF button and choose Compress PDF to output a smaller file.
If you have since moved up to 10.5, this option is no longer available by default, but there is an Automator action that restores it here : http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/compresspdfworkflow.html
The other thing to check is whether your graphics are at the actual size you need them or if you have scaled down a big picture, for example. The PDF will still contain information for the full-size image.
Re-sizing them in something like Photoshop to the size you need first before placing them in the presentation may help.
Finally, if you have Acrobat (Pro, not just the reader) you can use the Reduce File Size option in the FIle menu to compress the PDF you get from Keynote.
Post back with how you get on.

  • Can i change color mode in keynote?

Whenever I import pictures or logos to keynote, the colors turn out really skewed as from how they should look like.
COuld someone please tell me what might be wrong and how I can fix that? I have tried several differnt options when I export files from illustrator. Strange thing is, they llok perfect in Finder and Preview.
    Panicing here. Thanks.

I have just had the same issue. I am importing a logo I have created in Illustrator, which was done in RGB with specific values. The following methods all produced result that was different than the source…
-Copy/paste the logo from Illustrator with sRGB profile active in the document, and with no profile, with the same result.
-Placing the EPS directly was different again.
-Placing an AI file with embedded sRGB profile. No good either.
I also usually generate a PNG for client to use and when placing this into Keynote the colours were correct. The PNG was created in Illustrator with sRBG profile active. This worked for me, but I have seen other say it does not.
I've seen someone else claim changing the colour profile in Photoshop etc to the same one used by your screen will fix the shift, as Keynote supposedly uses the profile you have in system prefs. I tried this and it made no difference.
I assume the issue is colour profile conversion, but see no method that fixes it. Other than PNG.

  • Why is photo color intensity so flat compared to original photos?

I have been working on a Keynote presentation for photos I took on a recent trip. I edited my photos and converted them into jpeg files before bringing them into Keynote. Once in Keynote, the color intensity of the photos is very different from those in the jpeg files. They are flat and have no "pop." I would appreciate any suggestions on what I might do to remedy this. Thanks.

Sounds like you can simply create a correspondingly over-contrasty, oversaturated image and load that. It'll take some tinkering to find the balance, I'm sure.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

  • Adding different colour themes to the standard ones?

    morning,
i need to colour a graph as per company guidelines, however i cant see a way to add custom colours to the perset offerings in the chart colours.
    am i missing something?
    cheers.

Click on Keynote's Colors icon. In the Color palette using the color wheel, you can choose your color. The color palette has a very cool feature in the form of a magnifying glass, actually a color sampler (see below, red box).
Place the magnifying glass on any object on your screen and click (see below, red box), the color will now be set in the color wheel in the long rectangular box to the right of the magnifying glass and the selected text will reflect the new color.
You can save this color sample for future use by clicking in the color box and dragging down to the 'favorites' boxes, bottom of the color window.
...Once you've created your custom color, you can use it at any time. To do so, click on its small box at the bottom ~ it will then appear in the color palette (next to the magnifying glass icon). Drag it from there to your chart's Region 1 or Region 2, etc. color indicator.

  • How Do I Change the Background Color in Keynote?

Hello! I am trying to change the background color in Keynote, I can see where I should be able to do this, however my computer does not let me. If I change the template (in the Fun template from the standard to the horizontal picture) it will let me change it only in the box rather than the entire template. I really want to keep the style, just not the orange color. Thanks!

Ruth, the background in Fun is an image, not just a colour. For the templates without photo cutouts, you will need to select the template, go into the Inspector, choose Slide, select the Appearance tab, and then in the background section you can change the image. If you just want to change the colour, you can choose Tinted Image Fill in the dropdown menu, then click the colour box to control the tint.
Unfortunately, changing the Photo template is much more difficult, since the "background" image is actually a cutout placed on the slide above the actual background. As far as I know, changing this image will require access to fairly sophisticated graphics programs, such as Photoshop. However, if you are using Keynote 3, an alternative would be to create an image mask that is similar in shape to the cutout, as this would produce the same effect (cutouts are not nearly as vital now that images can be masked to a shape).

  • Correct Color Profile in Keynote '09 (or '08)

I have been tasked with putting together a photography presentation for six photographers. The presentation will be projected (with two Epson projectors and six color monitors) in Keynote ’09 (and ’08) for a one-night photographer’s gallery exhibit. One of the concerns raised by one of the photographers who has used Keynote (not sure the version, but probably ’08 or earlier) is that there is a "*color shift*" that occurs from the original saved image. All images are exported from (Apple) Aperture, (Adobe) Lightroom, and (Adobe) PhotoShop CS3-CS5 using the Adobe RGB 1998 Color Profile.
All photographers (including myself) are working with Aperture, Lightroom, or PhotoShop and are saving their final images with the Adobe RGB (1998) ICC color profile.
Is there a way to ensure “correct” color profiles are used in Keynote ’09 (and ’08)? If so, how is this done?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the discussions, anthonysan.
There isn't a way within the program to do it, however it IS possible I think. I'll give you some tips to start down that path, and, if you have any questions, just post back here.
First, go to Keynote preferences and, under General Preferences, choose "Save new documents as packages". Next, create a new document (white theme), change the Master to blank, and place three rectangles on the first slide, each with an EASY to define color. (By "easy to define" I mean pick colors that you would be able to discern numerically, for example 100% red, 100% black, 100% green, etc.) Finally, double click inside each shape and add some unique text. I'm using "firstone", "secondone", "thirdone".
Now, save that document, then right-click (two-finger-click, control-click) on it's icon in the Finder. You should see an option to Show Package Contents. Select that and you should then see a few folders and some files. You're looking for index.apxl.zip. Double click that one to unzip it, then put the .zipped version in the trash (Keynote can read either just as well). Now, you should have an index.apxl file.
When you double-click the index.apxl file, you'll have to choose to open it with TextEdit, then search for your unique text "firstone".
Things get more detailed from this point, but it does lead to a potential solution. Let me know if you're following so far, and we can look at the mysteries within they Keynote file

  • How do I change the color of guides in Keynote?

How do I change the color of a guide in Keynote from the default yellow to something like red? I can't find an answer to this anywhere. Thanks.

NM, found it in the Preferences. Figured it would be in the Inspector.

  • How do I add a color pallet for Keynote and Pages?

This seems like it should be straightforward, but I need to add a new color pallet for use with Keynote and Pages.  I have the .clr file, but I'm not having any success getting it to show up in the color picker.

Within Keynote, show the colour palette (command shift C   or   view > show colours)
click the image palette button (arrowed)
click the Palette drop down menu and select either: new from file or new from clipboard

  • Keynote Color Space Mismatch?

    hello --
i am ecountering this strange keynote behavior. when i place a png file either as a background to a slide, or simply drang and drop it into keynote the rgb values of the image are changed. this happens despite the file having srgb embedded as a profile. this leads to somewhat inconsistent colors between my deliverables.
in keynote, when i use the sampler of the color palette i can tell that it uses "device rgb" upon placing the image. as an example:
the color (srgb) 191/189/174 gets converted to (device rgb) 203/200/188
does anyone understand what is happening here or how i can ensure that the image gets placed/imported properly?
    any leads are greatly appreciated.
    thank you in advance.
    p.
    ===
as a small addition as i keep playing around with this issue. i just discovered that a plain copy & paste from photoshop straight into keynote seems to preserve the rgb values. this is very strange. see image for an example. left one is dragged into keynote, right one is the correct color just pasted into keynote.

when i place a png file either as a background to a slide, or simply drang and drop it into keynote the rgb values of the image are changed.
This is happening because you dont have a colour managed workflow.
Keynote will use which ever profile has been set in System Preferences > Displays.
For example, if you have set Display settings to Adobe RGB and you place an sRGB file in Keynote, the image file will be changed from sRGB to Adobe RGB, therfore the colour values will change.
The rule for using images in a colour Managed workflow is to use the same profile in the host application
(Keynote, Photoshop, Preview) as the image file has, or convert the incoming file to the hosts profile.
So if you have mostly sRGB images, while working in Keynote, change the Display setting to sRGB.

  • Color change from Photoshop to Keynote

I have corrected the color of some images in Photoshop CS2 using a color calibrated monitor, converted the images to JPEG and imported them into Keynote. It was disappoining and unexpected to see a significant shift in color with a greenish-yellow tint and incresed saturation. Why is this happening? How can I correct or prevent it from happening?

What version of Keynote are you using? Version 2 had some known color issues.

  • How to change the colors in Keynote 6.1 globally using the xml presentation file?

    Hi ,
When I used keynote 5.3 in the "show package contents" I could find an Index.apxl.gz file. With that XML like file, I changed the color of a scheme globaly by replacing the color that I had with another one. However in new Keynote 6.1 there is no such Index.apxl file. There are a bunch of binary .iwa files that are unreadable and of course of no use to us.
Anyone has solved this problem? Its really bad, and slowing my work down like a lot :/
I wonder what kind of developers thought of this "amazing" change from XML to IWA (whatever that is)....
    Anyway thanks a lot!

    Hello Gary,
I'm having the same problem as mshefiti, and I don't think that using a Custom Theme could be the solution, at least I could not see it.
What we need is the possibility of replacing a specific colour through the all presentation instead of having to go through each single element in each slide that is a lot time consuming. Basically what you can do when you tie a color scheme into the theme colors in PowerPoint.
With the theme, as far as I know, you can have specific color and settings for the titles, the text, the background etc, but not on the single elements you put in the slides, like icons, graphs etc.
May be I'm missing something in the potential of the Custom Theme, or I'm not using it properly, if that's the case can you give a link to a tutorial that explain that ?
    Thanks
