Keynote and Quicktime stop & start not accurate

When i use Keynote, i sometimes want to have a movie play from a point other than the start and i find the start & stop control innaccurate. Is there an update coming or someone who has an answer. My particular issue is a countdown timer (.mov) which i use, and to have the precise point of the countdown is impossible to get with the slider.

If you find the original file, right-click it in Finder and open with QuickTime Player. When in QT, click Edit>Trim (cmd+T) and trim your video to selection. This seems to be a more accurate trim feature. Once done, you can File>Export and resave your video for using in Keynote.
I agree, the feature in Keynote is almost useless.

Quicktime was working fine, I am not sure what Quicktime it was. I upgraded Java, I am not sure if I upgraded Quicktime. After that all quicktime movies with "MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode" codecs started playing black with audio in the background. iMovie was not used. Thank you, I am beyond desperate and I am starting to think no one can help me with this.
Then I am not sure how your created the MPEG-2/PCM MOV files. Files not imported via the MPEG-2 Import codec would normall remain in their long GOP compression format which it not edit compatible in QT based video editors. Those that are imported via the codec to make them edit-compatible then need the codec for proper playback in QT based players/editors.
Since you now say that "Quicktime is working fine," am I to assume that it is After Effects that is playing "black" screen videos and that the files play fine in the QT players? Since you also mention the files are time coded, am I to assume you used FCP or some other app to import the files (which may use the same sort of import workflow) or am I to assume it is the timecode data itself that you feel is now causing the problem. In either case, a Java update may have been a security update that is now causing your current issue by disallowing access to the required playback component for some unknown reason which Apple is unlikely to divulge if it refers to a software security risk.
If problem is general on your system, then do you have a short sample file that you can upload for testing purposes on my Snow Leopard system? At the very least, this may confirm if the problem is general to all updated platforms or local to your individual system and/or user account.

Keynote (and other iWork apps) not saving properly!

I have had some strange problems over the last few weeks where I get messages telling me that iWork (usually Numbers) cannot save the files as 'something else' is using the file. So I click 'save anyway' and I get strange files in folders, ie folder and file name is the original name plus some gooblygook.
I have got round this by deleting the 'extras' and carrying on. But now I am preparing a major presentation in Keynote and suddenly it is not saving graphics some of the time!
For example I was working on a slide - and suddenly got a message that 'some problems occured' -

I have been working with this presentation for some time and have never encountered any problems - passing between my laptop and my iPad to review and modify (mainly viewing on the iPad and editing on the MacBook).

I've been having some success NOT using any files that have previous images or audio in them, starting from a base template and then adding audio and video and photos that are already on my hard drive, not previous Keynote files. Today I needed five slides that were part of another deck and, you guessed it, they were corrupted (or missing) when I reopened the file, only the thumbnails remaining.
I closed the original Keynote file, placed a zip extension, then control- clicked to see the contents. The images were missing from the package. I then replaced the extension with .key and reopened in Keynote. The audio file had been there but not the images or the drawing, which I then searched for.
Yes, delete the weird file backups and make a backup of the original in the finder. Then lock it! (You're using Mountain Lion?)
I have a huge presentation tomorrow. I have five backups, including on a thumb drive.
How much longer Apple?

ITunes and QuickTime stopped working after an upgrade...

I have been pulling my hair out trying to get my iTunes working again. Here is what I have done already in order:
1. Does not work regardless of user (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302856)
2. Tried running with changes to MSCONFIG
- Ran according to Apple Support Web Site (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538)
- Ran in Diagnostics mode
- Ran in /SAFEMODE
3. Uninstalled and removed from any reference from registry
4. Removed iTunes configuration files (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302386)
5. Installed WinInspector Spy and launched iTunes to see what happened. Unfortunately I have not figured out how to copy and paste the log, but it shows the iTunes window class being created, a bunch of other stuff, then the OfficeWatson class, stuff and then the infamous "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. After hitting the Send Error Report, I see the OfficeWatson window being destroyed and that is it. This leads me to believe that the problem is somehow with the outlook integration between iTunes and Windows? So I looked in my Add/Remove programs and sure enough Office and Outlook were upgraded the day after the last time i was able to use iTunes. So I tried uninstalling Office, iTunes and QuickTime. QuickTime refused to uninstalled claiming a fatal error. I then forcably removed it as described in the apple knowledge paper. Another interesting point, when I ran QuickTime, nothing happens, not even a crash message. When I run QuickTime Preferences from the system tray, the dialog shows, but when I click on the FileTypes tab, I get a RUNDLL error: "An exception occurred while trying to run "Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTime.cpl".
I also tried running StraceNtX.exe against it, but it doesnt create the right environment for iTunes (it thinks it is Windows 2000 and does have the right service pack).
PLEASE can someone help? This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time was on another computer that came with a "real" restore point (not the stupid one Windows has that does not work) and I solved it by simply restoring back in time. This time I do not have that option!
ARGH - I really do not want to have to use Media Player.
Is there a way to force a stack trace? I am a UNIX programmer and not familiar with Windoze.

It sounds as though things have got pretty screwed up. If you couldn't clean things up properly with the MS installer cleaup, there is thread on cleaning up uninstall information in the registry.

I am not sure that I have anything more to offer as you appear to have done most things. Have you tried turning off all security software while doing the install, and doing the MSconfig thing with just Quicktime. Presumably your system is free of malware?
As a matter of interst, what happens if you have the task manager running when you start Quicktime, does it start and then stop, or keep running or not start at all?
A few people seem to have these intractable problems and the forum expert on this has been away since christmas, but you could try searching the forum for "b noir" posts about install/launch problems.

Keynote and Quicktime v7

I have been producing keynote presentations in quick time format and had great success using quicktime v6 player - just upgraded to v7 and all my links in the prestation seem to produce a path error i.e. can't find a file when I just click on a llink that is linking slides - any thoughts ?
Sounds like Key note quicktime export may not be ready for v7 of quicktime ?

Might I dare to say a better workaround than the others? My reason being that there's (from my perspective) no loss of function (other than having to use Firefox instead of IE when cold-launching a link).
The other solutions posted (in a related post) each had their own problems -
--Reverting to Quicktime 6.5.2 (on the PC end) meant the file stopped working if QT7 had been used on the Mac side.
--Reverting to QT 6.5.2 on the Mac (via the reinstaller, or any method) seems to be impossible if you've upgraded beyond OSX 10.3.9.
--Re-exporting the interactive file as a Quicktime movie through QT removes all interactive functions, which is what I needed, and
--Opening the .mov file within Internet Explorer (which does work) doesn't allow for full-screen display of the video.

Make sure to sign to the App Store first. Then it should say Installed.
And check to see if the purchases are, "hidden" > Mac App Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

i had older versions of keynote and pages. they were fine but obviously outdated. i downloaded the updates (2.0.1 for pages and 3.0.1 for keynote). now both programs don't work.
upon clicking either icon in finder window, the dock icon appears, bounces a little, then poof disappears as if I never opened it. no menu bar appears on top also. really just the icon for a few seconds.

When you say older versions, do you mean Pages 1.0.x and Keynote 2.x? If you do, the updates do not work for those versions, you have to buy iWork 06. Cheers!

Keynote: I downloaded the update on Keynote and the fonts did not transfer. How do I transfer fonts. Needing them for Presentation this weekend.

You might still be able to use the old version ('09). Updating Keynote causes the previous version to move to a new location. Open the applications folder and look for a folder named "iWork '09". The previous version of Keynote will be in there.

Apple Keynotes and Quicktime on Mac?

As the die-hard Apple fan I am, I was trying to watch some older keynotes of apple introducing some products. I have allways had this issue with my Intel mac. They keynotes just don't play. Or very poorly. The audio is fantastic. No problems. But the video comes in blurry, and refreshes every few seconds. Its awful. And somtimes I just get stuck at the copyright information at the beginning. I have normally just grunted, said bug and then watched it on my iPhone. But my iPhone wont play these old keynotes and i am stuck. Its not my internet connection. 6 MBPS.
Help? Or rather HALP?

Keep in mind that the galleries can not be password protected for ATV access.
That tripped me up for a week or so, as all of my galleries were PW protected. If so, ATV will only allow you to remove the listing for your gallery; it will not show what is there. I edited one of my galleries to remove the PW requirement, and ATV is now able to display it.

Can't you open any web pages in Firefox?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

ProRes 422 file "corrupt" in Premiere (and Quicktime & VLC) but not in After Effects

We recorded a lengthy (c.90minute) seminar on an EX3 and an Atomos Samurai, to ProRes 422. We've noticed that the file glitches when it's played back in anything real-time, such as Premiere, VLC or Quicktime (we don't have a copy of FCP to test it on). What happens is that less than a second of picture will loop and stutter continuously for, say, 30 seconds, while the audio is just white noise. This happens seemingly at random (although at the same place in whichever software we're playing it back on), and infrequently: so far, in 90 minutes of footage we've found one 30" section which does this, and a few examples of it happening for a second or two.
BUT: as an experiment I tried importing the clip into AE, and it plays fine. I've been able to export a 1-minute long "patch" to a 4:2:2 MXF which doesn't glitch, which we've reimported into Premiere with no issues. Is there any reason why this should be - I had assumed that Premiere and AE would share the same low-level code used for playing back video, or is this not the case? Is it something to do with the fact that Premiere's trying to play it back in real-time while AE isn't?
Obviously, it's not a workable solution to have to keep running footage through AE. Is this a bug, or just one of those things?

It is not the case.
Is it something to do with the fact that Premiere's trying to play it back in real-time while AE isn't?
That was my thought, too, given that even VLC stumbles on the clip. AE basically 'renders' everything for playback.

Iphone 4 retina and Quicktime "pro" 7 not compatable? *** !

I am disgusted that apple would sell quicktime pro (7) and advertise that it works for the iphone when the iphone 4 has been out for a year now and QT7 does NOT support the retina display resolution (920 x 640). Only the much older lower resolutions are supported for the iphone 4. Also the h264 compressor apple uses is just terrible. Heck even Videora has a far better H264 compressor and its free !

In all honesty, Convert your mov files with Videora for free and they will look 10 x better than any quicktime "pro" version, do not ever purchase quicktime pro as it is a complete waste of your money and amounts to nothing more that a THEFT of your monies ! I should have gone with the reviews as most are clearly very negative on this old product but I didnt think apple could make something this terrible, hmmm, but they did.

You are obviously using the built-in preset options and not custom settings. You are forgetting that Apple's primary purpose when creating pre-sets is to ensure compatibility. These options are programmed for multi-generation devices and, only support, the quality/settings that are compatible with the least capable device. As such, the TV preset is limited to 960x540 display resolution at 30/29.97 fps and a maximum video data rate of 5.0 Mbps. In a similar manner, the iPhone pre-set is limited to 1620 macroblocks/frame (usually a 720x480 or 720x576 max matrix) and 1.0 Mbps video data to maintain compatibility with all previous iPhone models. If you want to make the most of your device's particular capabilities, then either use custom settings or chose a different device pre-set whose output more closely matches what you want to use on your device if you want to use QT 7 Pro to perform your conversions. If you want to use a different converter, than, by all means, feel free to do so. However, since the source of your problem is in your work flow and not the product, I was merely attempting to point out the fact that your previous comments were unjustified.
As far as editing softwares and hardwares go I have everything from autodesk flame/ inferno down to pro and everything in between. Again please respond to my simple question only, why does qt7 not support the latest iPhone 4 higher retina display resolution? As opposed to older lower resolutions.
Let's hope you fully know how to take advantage of all of these hardware/software devices/applications. If you really feel Apple should support each device and generation of device with a separate entity pre-set as created and sold since being released, then contact Apple HERE and register your total dissatisfaction regarding each and every product not to your liking. You, of course, are entitled to your own opinions. Please extend the same courtesy to others.
Qt7 still ***** and is a total waste of money as people can do everything it does better and for free. Screw apple!
I might agree in some instances. For transcoding, I tend to prefer the X.264 codec with custom settings for more extensive analysis, better vector motion detection/rendering, removal of duplicated frames when applying detelecine, and a limited combined deinterlace/decomb filtering option. However, try aging, masking, layering, blending, picture-in-picture/picture-with-picture, and similar compositing options in a "free" utility.

Why did apple trailers and quicktime stop working together all of a sudden?

I'm running Chrome and Firefox and Apple Trailers suddenly stopped launching HD trailers through Quicktime X. It was working automatically a few weeks ago. The only info i can find on the net is years old. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone fix it?

I've been having the same problem, I think since updating to Lion. HD trailers will only load through Safari, no other browser.

How to put mp3 along in flash file and control stop start

Can someone tell me how to put mp3 which is just speaches done, be put alone in a flash file. Do i have to import sound? I wanted to be able to put 3 different mp3 files in flash and have people able to click on any sound and hear it. Be able to play and start and pause a sound. Is it possible are should I use something other than flash. Are should I convert to mp3 into another format and put in flash.

Yes, you need to import sound. It's just File>Import>Open External Library (in CS4, the third step may be different for others), and then browse to the files you want. They'll be put into the library.
To do what you're asking, I would put the sounds into each of their own movie clips, and have buttons inside the movie clips to control the timeline. For instance, the pause button would just have the onRelease = function(){ stop(); }; code applied to it.
