Keynote freezing with transitions on Leopard solved

For anyone having problems with Keynote '08 freezing on a G5 computer while running Leopard with a 30" monitor, the problem is apparently the monitor/graphics card. Thanks to a reply by Sean Istre to a question I had posted earlier this year, a work-around for this issue has been found.
This was the problem: every time my Keynote '08 presentation encountered any kind of transition, it would lock up the entire OS (10.5.2), necessitating a reboot. It had worked fine with with Tiger, but as soon as I had installed Leopard, the freeze would occur. I am running a dual G5 attached to a 30" monitor. My system features an ATI 850 XT graphic card. Apparently, it is the graphic card that needs updating (which hasn't happened since 2005, seemingly) since it doesn't seem capable of handling the highest resolution (2560 x 1600) of the monitor while running Keynote '08.
As recommended by Mr. Istre, reducing the monitor resolution solves the problem. I tried the four highest resolutions of the monitor (which is a Samsung SyncMaster 305T) of 1920 x 1440, 2048 x 1280, 2048 x 1536, and 2560 x 1600. Keynote '08 ran flawlessly at all of these resolutions except 2560 x 1600.
Go figure.
Hopefully, this information will be helpful for someone out there who has encountered a similar problem.
Bob

I found out another workaround.
After you've split up the original clip into 2 clips.
step 1 : open a new iMovie project.
step 2 : drag the first clip of the splitted clip to this new iMovie project.
step 3 : export this clip form your new iMovie project using Share, QuickTime with option Compress movie for Full Quality. (just dragging the splitted clip to the desktop results in the original clip)
step 4 : import this shared clip into your iMovie project (not the new iMovie project).
step 5 : repeat step 2 until 4 for the second clip of the splitted clip
step 6 : now you can use the transition on both imported clips
Anyone else with a workaround ?

  • I have completed a keynote presentation with music already. How do I record the slideshow so I can burn it to a DVD disc. I have tried to export it as a Quicktime file but the transitions have been slow that the music finishes first.

How do I record a keynote slideshow with an attached music already? I trid to export it through Quicktime but the final result is different from the original keynote presentation. What I mean is that the slide transitions are slow that the musci finishes first before the slide presentation.

I posted this on another thread. See if this works:
    1) Uncheck "Backup previous version" in Keynote's Preferences.
    2) Make a duplicate copy of your file that has issues and save it.
    3) If you still get spinning wheels from switching between apps after editing or 10 seconds of inactivity, manually save with command+s. It may beach ball here but be patient and wait for it to finish! Try editing and resume doing work now.
Command+s may be a bit slow but I think that might be normal since the files are so big.
Good luck and let me know if this works.

  • I'm getting the rainbow wheel when I try tp pen in internet page (Safari). The page half loads then appears to freeze with the rianbow wheel.  I get the same result when I try to stream a movie from NETFLIX.  Freezes up rather than plays (after loading).

I get the rainbow wheel when I try to open an internet page. It loads halfway, then freezes, with the rainbow wheel whirring around. Smae thing happens when I try to stream a movie on Netflix.  The movie loads, then the wheel shows up and the screen freezes.  Same thing when I try a DVD, it takes the disc, but won't play when I hit on PLAY.
I am repair permissions, and all that I can do, but I am a novice.  Any help would be greatly appreciated because I spend big bucks and drive 40 miles to get Apple help.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If your profile info is up to date, you probably have a 2006 or 2007 MacBook with a CoreDuo or Core2Duo.
It probably came with 512MB or 1GB RAM memory and a 60, 80, or 120GB hard drive.
    You're still running OS X Tiger, 10.4.
Your DVD drive may be dirty or wearing out.
For specifics about your computer, click on the  Apple Logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, and More Info... to find details.)
You may be running short of hard disk space. You should have at least 10% free, or 10 to 15GB free for best performance. Less than that, and your hard disk is spending lots of time searching for places to store data.
Complex web pages and sites like Facebook and Twitter, and pages using Adobe Flash, and high-bandwidth applications like video streaming from NetFlix can all cause your computer to run slowly, and the fan to run at high speed, because the processor is working hard. Conversely, email is not terribly resource-intensive, and probably still works pretty well.
Several things can each provide a small performance increase (listed in no particular order):
Adding more RAM memory. Upgrade to 2Gb to give your programs a bit of 'breathing room', especially if you are running more than one program at a time.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the current operating system and programs from scratch. This erases all your existing programs and data. Unless you have backups and program discs, you lose everything currently stored on it.
Installing a higher capacity, faster hard disk, say 250GB or 320GB will give your programs and data more space, and perhaps faster access if you replace the factory 5400rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. If your current hard disk is nearly full (less than 10% free space), the drive has to 'thrash' to free space to store information.
Upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.5 Leopard or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Both are discontinued OS X versions, still available to order directly from Apple, but not likely found on a store shelf any longer. An upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion might not be possible for your MacBook (details here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/), and Lion would likely cause a further slowdown, because honestly, Lion is optimized for newer, faster dual-core or quad-core computers with fast video chipsets and 4GB or more of RAM.
A faster internet connection, for example: I switched internet providers to get a 3.0Mb DSL connection (up from a 512Mb connection) for an extra $10 per month, and saw downloads and internet browsing speeds increase dramatically.  With the slower connection, it was not possible to watch video.
Will all of these upgrades together get you close to the performance of the latest MacBook Air or MacBook Pros? NO!
Ultimately, you have a 4- or 5-year-old computer, and spending up to several hundred dollars for upgrades might not be a worthwhile investment for you, versus applying that much money toward the cost of a new(er) Mac, and perhaps passing your MacBook on to a friend, child, or grandchild who needs mainly email capability.
If a brand new Apple is not in the budget, consider a refurbished Mac from the Apple Store online. These are reliable computers from 'last year's models' and have the same 1-year Applecare warranty as a brand new model, and often sell at a discount of 10 to 30 percent of the price when the model was introduced.
I'm using a mid-2007 MacBook, purchased as a refurb from Apple in late 2007. It came with 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Over the years, I've upgraded it twice. Firs to 2GB, then to 4GB RAM, to a 320GB drive, then to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and to OS X 10.5 Leopard, and then to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Rather than one more round of upgrades to OS X 10.7 Lion, I'm saving for a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at some time in the future.

  • Photoshop CS6 freezes with attempts to change printer settings

(This problem also occurs with InDesign CS6, so I will post to that forum as well. First one to give me a solution gets my undying love and devotion appreciation.)
My employer acquired a Canon 6010 printer with a Fiery print controller last year. I have no problems printing from my personal Windows laptop.
However, from my employer's iMac (OS X 10.6.8) I get the spinning beach ball of death at least 90% of the time that I open an existing document and attempt to change the printer settings. The only way out is via Force Quit. Inexplicably I can occasionally succeed in changing printer settings. I think the record was having to force quit the application 11 times. Not sure - I quit counting.
So far our only semi-consistent work around: create a new document and copy and paste the contents from the existing document. Not cool. But sometimes the app freezes with brand new documents, thus destroying my work around anyway.
    Additional Information:
I have installed all CS6 upgrades.
Our technical support contractor recreated the problem and could not find any solution other than the work around.
Canon says the problem is with the applications.
This happens whether I attempt to change the printer settings immediately or make changes to the document first.
It does not matter what other applications are running.
Rebooting the system after the app freezes does not make it work.
We cannot upgrade past 10.6.8 because of the age of the hardware. But CS6 is supposed to run on Snow Leopard.
I have tested this with other applications, including some older Adobe software. It does not happen with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, InDesign CS3, Photoshop CS3, Acrobat 8 Pro, Acrobat 9 Pro or Acrobat XI Pro.
This happens whether the documents were created and saved on the Mac or on a Windows computer.
Re-saving the documents and/or printer settings does not change the outcome. Once I restart the application Photoshop may remember the paper size, but doesn't remember duplex settings. (From another thread in this forum I suspect a corrupt printer preferences file.)
Per the instructions in the other thread I reset the printing preferences by launching the app while holding down shift-control-command. That enabled me to change the printer settings one time. Every subsequent attempt brought back the spinning beach ball.
No other employees report similar problems (including a few MacBook users). However, they do not use Photoshop or InDesign, nor do they typically change printer settings.
Sorry if some of that is irrelevant - just trying to give you as much info as possible and tell you what I've tried already. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Bonnie

Nanneri, my situation is similar in that creating the PDF and printing from that does take longer than just printing from InDesign and Photoshop.
I finally got a Canon tech rep on site who understood my problem. Though we had tried reinstalling the drivers (as had previous Canon reps), this guy got it right. Neither Photoshop nor InDesign has locked up since - at least not for the Canon 6010. (Photoshop has locked up twice when I've attempted to print to a Canon iPF8300s wideformat that isn't on the Fiery. Restarting PS has fixed that.)
Based on my experience, I would start with new drivers.
FYI: I am having problems printing to a new Canon C7065 that also uses Fiery. But the problems vary and I haven't isolated the factors. Sometimes I get a printed error report. Sometimes it just doesn't print. But no more software lockups.
In our case, I suspected our problems were related to having old hardware that can't be upgraded past OS X 10.6.8, which is the oldest OS compatible with both CS6 and the Fiery. But since you are on a newer OS, and a different printer, I'm beginning to wonder about the Fiery.
Hope you find a solution soon. Keep us posted!

  • ITunes freezing with error -50, -3259 and 9006

Okay, so I have had a problem with iTunes freezing in relation to downloading Podcasts since around version 8.  After updating to 10.2.2 on 10.6.7, iTunes has turned into one big fail.  Downloading anything produces any of the following error codes: -50. 3259 and 9006 after about 30 seconds.  After any error code is displayed, a few seconds later iTunes freezes with the pinwheel of death and no matter how long I leave it, I end up having to restart using my computer's power button.  After 2-3 restarts like this, the iTunes library is corrupted and the app freezes while loading the library.  During this library freeze, the drive where my iTunes library is stored is ejected.  This happens on both internal and external drives.
Here is what I have done thus far:
    Uninstalled iTunes completely.
Created a new user account and installed iTunes 10.2.2 to that account.
    Added various media.
I have absolutely NO problems with iTunes until I download a podcast or something from iTunes U.  Then, the issues occur and I cannot seem to get rid of them until I unistall completely and reinstall to a new user account.
I would like to be able to use iTunes WITH podcasts and iTunes U on my main user account without the freezing.  Any suggestions?

I seem to have fixed my own problem.  I just thought I'd post my solution since I read posts from many, many people having similar issues.  So hopefully, this helps someone!
I found a file in /Library/Preferences called com.apple.pcast_integration.plist; the file text included QuickTimePro and Podcast Producer Export in its strings.  Deleting the file solved my problem.  I went from my main user account freezing constantly and throwing up errors to working 100% smoothly with just deleting that one file.  I cannot believe this simple action solved a problem I've been having for so long!
I do not understand how this file is being referred to in downloading podcasts.  I have tried everything, even loading and playing all types of media from old libraries I thought were corrupt, but cannot seem to make iTunes or Quicktime recreate the file...nor can I find anyone else having trouble due to this file.  Could it be a remnant from an old installation, or something that somehow deployed along with a podcast?  If anyone can tell me more about com.apple.pcast_integration.plist, I would appreciate it.  And let me know if removing it helps you!

I am running wifi from verizon.  Recently changed from mifi2200 to jetpak 4620 in a 3G location.  Ibook running fine, desktop freezes.  If I can boot desktop in safe mode and get airport turned off in time. then I can reboot regularly and imac runs flawlessly with no wireless.Have run disk utilities and TechTool Pro rebuild etc, but nothing has worked.  How do I fine the culprit?

the power logix thing was really sad. apple changed so much after 10.4.8 that there wasn't a viable way to patch the software.
That statement is precisely why I don't believe in blindly updating the OS, especially in a non-standard machine.
We can't expect third parties to support us forever, and it is shameful to break something that works fine, except that we updated the OS....
I think that any upgrade or modification to a machine or the OS greatly increases the risk of trouble or incompatibility with current configuration and "new" system files.
After all, the component or software could only be tested as far as the current OS version when the component or software was released.
Beyond that, we are all "beta testing".
Following a beta tester protocol, and applying updates to a cloned system drive first, is a prudent way to approach updates, and not only for older, heavily modified machines.
After 10.4.8 and moreso with Leopard, the focus is primarily on Intel architecture, not PPC architecture.
Like it or not, we are all updating to the abyss of the extinction of our machines, unless we can be satisfied with the last stable version of OS that works well with our hardware and software.
I wish they would include the latest pkgs at least with software update.
Yes, having individual packages, rather than lump "OS X 10.x.x" updates would be nice.
This way, one could update as one sees fit. That is to say, for example, fix the Quicktime, but leave my Network alone, etc., etc.
In all fairness, Apple does provide for some breakdown of updates, but I believe there is much room for improvement, especially, as you point out, with regard to the core services portion of the OS.
Until then, I'll leave Software Update disabled.......

  • Keynote '09 with very long presentation

I'm planning a kiosk-type application using keynote and a new mac mini. The presentation will have video, transitions, etc. and will be looped. The video will be large (up to 1GB per clip), but not embedded into the keynote file. I'm wondering if the 1GB mini will be able to handle this ok, or if I'll have to go with 2 or 4G. I know the more the better, but I'm trying to keep costs down. Any opinions?

I had really hoped this problem would be fixed with iWork 09, as some people reported, but today I tried my first QT export from a Keynote presentation with narration, and the problem persists. My audio cuts out after the first minute or so of the QT movie.

  • Self-running presentation with transitions & animations on web?

I want to create a self-running presentation with transitions and animations that I can post on a web site, ideally as a Flash file.  Is this possible with Keynote?  What are my options?

    Thanks, Edward.
I did some research on the web and the most recent information I can find is for 2009, showing Quicktime with an installation rate of 65% or so.  In my target audience, my guess is the installation rate will be somewhat higher.  So I will switch to Keynote, recreate the presentation (or import it, if I can), and export it to Quicktime as an interim solution.  At less than 100%, I can be reasonably certain that some people who do not have QT installed will simply leave my site rather than download QT to watch my video.
I'm no programmer so I have no idea how hard it would be, but, as a big-time Apple fan and a long time marketing person, I would say that if Keynote users want to post their presentations (with transitions and animations) on the web, then Apple should support exporting to Flash.  (Of course, I would say the same thing to MS about PP, but w/o the "big-time fan" comment.)
Thanks again.  You've helped me make progress.

  • Multiple images with transition

I'm sure this question is answered somewhere, but I don't know what to search on... here's what I'm trying to do... I want to have a series of small pictures cycle through in the same location with a transition of some sort (wife likes the dissolve)... I had the automated Gif thing working, but the wife wants transitions... I created a movie but then you have to start it (don't know how to loop and autostart... then what do the non quicktime folks do?)... even created a flash with Keynote (but the transitions didn't export)... All thoughts or samples are welcome... I thought something like this was going to be easy and it probably is, I'm not experienced enough with iWeb...
    Thanks

I hope this will make sense for you.
Log on to your iDisk. Navigate to the iWeb folder. Open up the Sites folder. Find your web site and open that folder. In there you'll find a folder called 'yourpagename files'
Open that. find yourpagename.js. Open that with Text Edit. You'll see something like this for your embedded movie.
    document.write('<object id="id4" classid="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" width="632" height="95" style="height: 95px; left: 8px; position: absolute; top: 31px; width: 632px; z-index: 1; "><param name="src" value="Home_files/RedKnotWebTitleQT.mov" /><param name="controller" value="false" /><param name="autoplay" value="true" /><param name="scale" value="tofit" /><param name="volume" value="100" /><param name="loop" value="true" /><embed pluginspage="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/" type="video/quicktime" class="mov" width="632" height="95" src="Home_files/RedKnotWebTitleQT.mov" controller="false" autoplay="true" scale="tofit" volume="100" loop="true"></embed></object>');
Change both controller values to "false"
And both autoplay and loop values to "true".
Then save. When you go to your site(after emptying cache on your browser), you'll see your movie playing automatically, looping over and over and with no controller showing.
    Good luck!

Are there compatibility issues with Mac OSX Leopard V. 10.5 and Word 2004 11.6.3 when installed on a PowerMac G5? I understand the Leopard upgrade is okay on the later Intel Mac, but what about my G5 PowerPC Mac?

  • Advice on best way to transition to Leopard

Hi all, apologies in advance if this has been discussed before (although I didn't find anything similar).
My copy of Leopard should arrive sometime next week. I have a G5 PowerMac with an internal 160GB drive (Old Drive) that is around 2/3 full. I just purchased and installed a second internal 250GB drive (New Drive) that is still empty. My plan is to install a fresh copy of Leopard on the New Drive, then transfer all my data from the Old Drive to the New Drive, and then format the Old Drive and use it for Time Machine plus some large X-Plane scenery files that don't need to be backed up as they are from the X-Plane DVD.
I really wanted to clean up my system before I install Leopard, i.e. get rid of old unnecessary files, cache files, and all such files that have begun to slow down my G5 recently. My dilemma is that:
1- if I install Leopard on the New Drive first, it will be cumbersome to copy over all the old files that include necessary System Library files/internet plug-ins/etc because I'd need to painstakingly pick and choose which files to carry over folder by folder, not to mention that many of these files will not be compatible with Leopard or belong in a different directory than they were in Tiger, and
2- if I do the easier thing and clone my Old Drive to my New Drive, and just upgrade the New Drive from Tiger to Leopard afterwards, I will retain a lot of the junk I wanted to get rid off.
Any help, suggestions, scoldings, complaints, or insights will be really helpful. Thanks much!

    Thanks both....
I actually am not concerned (at this point) with which installation option is best/safest. I'm actually trying to figure out how best to transition to Leopard without carrying over useless junk/clutter from the Tiger system folders while retaining my useful settings (bookmarks, etc) and photos.
As for the backup volume for Time Machine, we've been discussing it here:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195924&tstart=0
Apparently some people got it to work...
    thanks again.

  • N650-1GD5/OCV1 freeze with artifacts and crash

    Good morning everyone
First of all, I will start to present the configuration of my computer
PSU: Sirtec High Power 500W Bronze, PFC Active
MB: MSI 970A-G43 (bought 2 weeks ago)
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 240 (2.8 GHz) - Running stock with AMD Cooler since i bought it, around 35-43 C operating
             temperature
    RAM: KingMax 4GB DDR3 1333 MHz (1 x 4GB Module)
VGA: N650-1GD5/OCV1 (MSI GeForce GTX 650, running with stock cooler and stock frequency, i have never oc on it)
    HDD1: WD 640GB Caviar Black Edition, SATA2 32MB Cache
    HDD2: WD 500 GB Caviar Blue, SATA2, 16MB Cache
    DVD Writer 1: LG GH22NS50
    DVD Writer 2: Optiarc AD-7280S
    Card Reader 3.5"
I'm an very very casual gamer, i play games once or twice a week; in the last period i didn't played games for one month; i've used my pc for mail, office, watching movies, messenger, facebook, web browsing, hdd data recovery, programming php. Before upgrading to 970A-G43, i had the same configuration - except MB and RAM (i used for 4 years K9A2GM V3 with 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 KingMax and the actually N650-1GD5/OCV1; played games with no problems).
After the upgrade, i installed OS Windows XP SP3 with clean install, AHCI Mode, latest drivers - no problems 'till there. I have installed latest version of DirectX 9.0c and some games: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed. All with same problem: pc freezes with artifacts and then freeze - sometimes after 3-4 minutes of playing, othertimes after 10-15 minutes.
I've checked the RAM with MemTest86 for one night, no errors. I've checked the CPU and GPU Temperature, all stable (CPU around 40, GPU around 70 under full load). I've stressed up the system with Prime95 and Furmark latest version running at the same time - all stable (Tested for 30 minutes, CPU around 43 C, GPU around 85 C - no freeze, no crash).I installed 3D Mark 06, i ran it and it freezes in-time of first test or after it.
VGA driver was 320.49 WHQL initially, downloaded from nvidia website. I uninstalled it, cleaned my OS with Driver Sweeper, installed latest version from MSI Website (MSI Graphics Driver 306.81 ). Both drivers, same problems.
I'm pretty sure that there is no problem with PSU or MB's VRM (VRM supports 125W TDP, CPU is running 65W. My old boad K9A2GM V3 has only 65W and there were no problem). If there were problems, the system would crash in prime 95 and furmark running at the same time, i think.
I didn't tested yet my VGA on other PC, neither another VGA in my PC.
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.
P.S.: In BIOS, all is set on AUTO - except DDR Speed - Manually set to 1333 MHZ with auto timings.
C1E Enabled, Cool and Quiet Activated, EUP 2013 Enabled.
I have flashed MB to latest BIOS, v10.3; same problem
    Any suggestion is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Best regards!

VGA Card is dead. Probably at least one memory chip died or has errors on it.  Testet on another PC and results are same, in 3D Mark and Crysis 3 too.
I sent the card to warranty services.
    Problem is solved.
Thanks a lot to all of you who read my post.

  • Keynote Import slide transition timers

I was told to post here Re: Keynote Import slide transition timers
Can the transition times for a presentation can be inserted with automator  or can it be imported from a CSV sort of file.
The way I did this in Powerpoint was I created a static array with all slides timer I wanted, later looped through each slide and set the timer. can similar thing can be done in Keynote with applescript
Re: Keynote Import slide transition timers
    I also posted here, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27495413/applescript-to-set-transition-timers
I got one example but that gives me errors.
    Thanks for your help

Here is the solution for people who care, i figured out a way with some help from stackexchange forum
    tell application "Keynote"
set ss to slides of document 1
set c to count of ss
        set timerlist to {5, 4, 3, 9, 6}
        set n to 1
        repeat until n > c
set timer to item n of timerlist
            set transition properties of item n of ss to {transition delay:timer, automatic transition:true, transition effect:no transition effect, transition duration:0.5}
            set n to n + 1
        end repeat
    end tell
