Keynote/iMovie transparency

I don't seem to be able to successfully export animations from Keynote '09 with transparent backgrounds for use in iMovie.
I've tried three set-ups in Keynote:
1) background set to "none"
2) background set to "color" with 0% opacity
3) background set to "image" with a fully transparent PNG
I've exported to QuickTime with:
- "include transparency" checked
- "animation" compressor
- 30fps with auto key frames
- "millions+" colors
Set-ups 2 and 3 result in a .mov file with the background changed from white (as it appears in Keynote) to black. I assume this is an indication of actual transparency in the .mov file.
I then open iMovie 9.0.9 and import the .mov file with "optimize video" unchecked.
I drag the keynote clip from the event library onto my project clip and select "picture in picture." All this follows the tips and tutorials I have found for importing transparent animations. However, the clip appears with a solid black background where it should be transparent.
I'd really like to use Keynote to produce animated overlays in iMovie. Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?

Transparency is not available in Keynote version 6 at present. It might be included in the update to be released later next year, time will tell.

    Hi vickkjayy11 and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
    Just to be clear, we are a peer to peer support community and have nothing official to do with Apple.
    So to your problem, when you say:
    "I reset my macbook pro a few days ago"
    What exactly happened? Did you have a Time Machine backup?
    Read this:
    OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
    It would help to know the exact model (size and year) and which OS you're using.

  • Keynote 3: Transparent Animated GIF Problems

    I've been trying to get an animated GIF with a transparent background to run in Keynote, but it's giving some disastrous results.
    I produce the animation by rendering the frames as PNG (with alpha channel) in MegaPOV 1.2.1. Then I use the convert utility from ImageMagick 6.2.9 to make them into an animated GIF.
    When I drop the animated GIF into Keynote 3.0.2, the first frame shows fine (with transparency and all). But when I animate it, the background goes red (the main color in this particular movie) and some trace of the previous frames stays. It seems like:
    1. Rather than displaying the GIF frame-by-frame, each frame is getting layered onto the previous frames.
    2. Keynote doesn't like the alpha channel for some reason.
    Problem 1 is also present if I open the GIF in Preview (is that supposed to be the correct behavior of an animated GIF?). Problem 2 seems to be Keynote-specific.
    Any suggestions for a work-around on this? The animated GIFs work fine if rendered without the alpha channel, but it'd look so much better with transparency!
    iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    MegaPOV doesn't have a GIF output option. The choices are PNG, Targa, PPM, and hdr (not familiar with that last one). I don't know if PPM even has alpha-capability.
    So in some way, I have to convert PNG to GIF. The tools I have to do this are ImageMagick and Gimp. I tried them both, then viewed the results using several programs. Results are tabulated below -- (1) means that problem 1 from above was apparent (ie, parts of the previous frames were visible under the current frame); (2) means that problem 2 was visible (ie, the transparent parts took on some background color).
    If I didn't know how to change the default white background in the program, I couldn't tell whether problem (2) occurred, since the movie made with Gimp had a white background in Keynote.
    Using ImageMagick 6.2.9 to convert PNG->GIF and animate GIF:
    * viewing with Safari 2.0.4 : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Preview 3.0.9 : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Firefox 2.0.0.3 : (1)
    * viewing with Keynote 3.0.2 : (1), (2) -- alpha goes red
    Using Gimp 2.2.11 to convert PNG->GIF and animate GIF:
    * viewing with Safari : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Preview : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Firefox : (1)
    * viewing with Keynote : (1), (2) -- alpha goes white
    I only converted the first few frames using Gimp, since I was doing it by hand.
    All of this makes me wonder whether I'm dreaming the impossible, since problem (1) is universally present. It also makes me pretty sure that problem (2) is Keynote-specific.
    If there are any other tools that will convert/animate GIFs on a modern Mac, I'd love to hear about them. My UNIX-y tools seem to be failing me here. The Mac tools I remember from "back in the day" -- GIFBuilder and GIFConverter -- seem to have been abandoned around the beginning of Mac OS X. GIFBuilder won't even load my files, and GIFConverter still lacks alpha support in PNG.

  • Keynote Export "Transparent video"

    This maybe a some tip and trick how to export form Keynote transparent chart animations and what ever...
    i looking for answer around the network, but no answerts of this question! So i figure out how to do this and i like to share it (maybe helpful for others)
    1. Create a transparent .png file (i take for example my steps) i created in Photoshop transparent image 1024x576 for PAL Widescreen. Export as .png
    2. Open Keynote, make your own animated chart, pie or whatever you like.
    3. Open inspector > Document inspector set your size. (For my situation i choice 1024x576)
    4. Go to Slide inspector. Under Background choice Image Fill and use your transparent .png image
    5. File/Export.
    6. check include transparency. Under formats choice "Custom"
    7. Choice Settings!
    8. In Video Compression Settings Choice Animation Set your frame rate. Set Keyframes to Automatic. Set Depth to Millions Of Colors + (Quality - set to Best)
    Thats all!
    Transparency are not working by default - it works only when you set a transparent Color Fill
    this is some kind of Keynote Bug or so...

    This also works if in your step 4, you choose "Color Fill", then using the Color well, choose any color you want, AND set its Opacity to 0%.  No need for the transparent .png file this way.
    (I sure wish the Include Transparency check box would stay checked from one export to the next!)
    Cheers, and thanks for the post.

  • What's best workflow for Keynote iMovie iDVD Burning

    I create a slideshow in Keynote each year for our 5th graders.  I then export as a QT movie and import it into iMovie to add chapters markers, titles, credits, etc.  I then export as a QT movie again to pull into iDVD.  I then add Menu's and then burn to a dvd.
    It seems like a lot of re-encoding.  It gets encoded coming out of Keynote, then again coming out of iMovie, then yet again when creating the DVD out of iDVD.
    Is this the proper workflow or is there something else that I should be doing?
    By the way, which is best codec to export the video?  There's multiple choices when exporting from Keynote and then the same choices when exporting from iMovie.  Is there an ideal codec when the ultimate product is a standard-definition DVD?
    I'm running iWork '09 and iLife '11.

    You should be able to use the same encoding for out of Keynote and for all editing in iMovie and then out of iMovie so the only additional transcoding should be the final mpg-2 encoding in iDVD which actually creates a DVD.

  • If i open pages, numbers, keynote, iMovie, aperture, and iPhoto, they automatically update, even if there is no update

    Hi, my name is farrell ivander, i have problems, if i open my keynote, numbers, pages, aperture, iMovie, or iPhoto, and garageband, they automatically get updated, even if there is no updates available from the app store... could somebody tell me what the heck should i do except go off-line when opening them? and i have tested it on my friend's mac, it doesn't need updates every time i open it! why is it just me?

    What is your MacOS X version and Aperture version?
    What are your "System Preferences > App Store" settings?  Have you enabled automatic updates?
    Do you have older versions of the apps in question installed? Perhaps on a different part ions of you system drive?

  • Keynote iMovie

    Hi.  I created a couple slides with animation in Keynote.  I then used File > Export to produce a MOV QuickTime file. In iMovie, I then imported the QuickTime file in order to use the animated slides in a video.  All this worked fine.  But in iMovie, the top and bottom 10% of the slides are cut off.  Any idea how to export slides from Keynote so that the full slides appear in iMovie?  Thx

    Found the solution to this.  I was using a Keynote Theme with a 4:3 aspect ratio, but the video in iMovie had a 16:9 aspect ratio.  Selecting a Keynote Theme with a 16:9 aspect ratio solved the problem ...

  • Copying Images w/ Transparency

    Hi, I'm trying to copy an image from a Keynote 3 presentation that I did not create and paste it into Photoshop. The image in question is one that has a filename of droppedimage.tiff. The image itself in Keynote has transparency but when I paste it into photoshop, the transparency is gone and it is placed on a black background. How can I copy this image from Keynote to Photoshop and retain the image's transparency?
    I was able to open the .key file and locate it in the package contents but shouldn't keynote preserve the transparency in the copy/paste method as well?

    Brian, your suggestion is what I wrote as the only way I could still retain any transparency from an image being used in a keynote presentation despite it being a tiff.
    And for those playing along with this weird issue, here's a neat trick. This whole thread is in reference to trying to open the iWork Tour file in Keynote.
    Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:iWork '06:iWork Tour.app:Contents:Resources:English.lproj:iWork Tour.key
    Even though the Finder says the file is an application, you can click on the package contents and locate the keynote file. Once you locate the file, open it in Keynote and marvel at the MASSIVE Pages, Keynote, iDVD and iPhoto images. Those are the transparent images I'm trying to extract and put into Photoshop. Thanks Apple! Those images, when restored to their original pasted size, are around 600px X 600px. NICE!

  • Content for Keynote 09?

    Is it feasible to create animated content for Keynote (with transparency), as you could for Final Cut Pro?
    I've created a pulsating circle in Motion 5 that I'd like to use in Keynote.
    Any help appreciated, thanks.

    From the Share Menu choose Export Movie... (with Alpha-channel, ProRes 4444)
    Drag that file into Keynote...
    Or, should your project be in FCP X, go to the Share Menu / Media Browser... /
    Publish your project to the Media Browser...
    In Keynote open the Media Browser and drag that file into your Keynote project...

  • Multiple Keynote presentations onto iDVD?

    I am trying to create a DVD with multiple keynote presentations? I first created multiple QT files and created a DVD that worked well, but did not allow for manual progression when played form the DVD (even with the option selected on QT file creation). Manual progression works when the file is played from my computer but not when played from DVD.
    Next, I tried to export the files directly from Keynote to iDVD. However, I can't figure out how to get multiple files onto the same iDVD file.
    Any thoughts on how I can get accomplish:
    1) Multiple Keynote files onto the same DVD, with
    2) manual progression through slides when running from the DVD?
    Thanks!

    You have some great suggestions here. Very good info from both the above posts.
    There is a workaround but it doesn't involve iDvd. Rather it involves Keynote => iMovie as a .dv stream => minidv camcorder/ tape => set top DVD Recorder in sessions.
    Here’s a possible solution that involves exporting each individual keynote movie as a QT file / Movie to the desktop.
    From there you export each file as a .dv stream to your camcorder (assuming you have a minidv camera and iM6 which allows you to export back to the camera. Like this:
    Click Here:
    You record all the movies to minidv tape.
    Connect the camcorder to the digital FW input on a set top DVD Player / Recorder (in my case a Daewoo DVR07). Set the recorder to record in Sessions to rewrite able DVD-RW media and export one QT movie per session. Each session will have it’s own Basic Menu.... like this:
    Click here
    You’d have to use the remote control to play each movie and pause when appropriate.
    Btw .... it might also be possible to use Toast to record these QT files/movies in separate sessions onto one DVD.

  • Free iMovie for newly purchased iPad mini

    I just bought a brand new iPad mini, and according to the keynote, iMovie should be available for free download, but I still see it for 4,49€. Any ideas why?

    Hello Alfred,
    Thanks for replying.
    I will check the store today. My question, how can the "accidental damage" get into new products?
    Why a buyer should incur the damage caused by some unknown?

  • Blank screen on Apple tv with Keynote slideshow

    Today I couldn't get to play my presentation in slideshow mode neither on Keynote nor on PowerPoint app From my iPad Air through Apple TV. Slides are visible until you switch to slideshow. Then everything disappears and you see just a black screen. The only solution I could find was play through OneDrive in the browser. You get it on a smaller scale but at least I could use all the animations.
    Any ideas?

    I Had a similar experience, powerpoint app, keynote, imovie all blank when presenting. Even though ATV and ipad had latest updates.Did a hard reset, hold home button and off button down until you see a black screen and apple logo, of my ipad and all fine now.

    I would select the app, press the icon to download the App (Ottieni in my language, Italian), download would not start and an alarm saying "Download failed, try from the Purchased page to retry" would pop-up, see screenshot below.

    The same problem occurr when I try to update Keynote, Imovie or any other App I have downloaded.
    I do not know whether this is related to this issue but some time ago I installed Avast.
    I could not install other apps such as uTorrent (not downloaded through App Store) until I removed Avast.
    I am utterly disappointed.
    Can anyone help, please?
    Thanks.
    Carlo

    Yes, Avast could very well be the issue. Bad software, use the developer's instructions to uninstall and don't install again. Your Mac has no real need for most 3rd party anti-viral software and those so-called tune-up apps mess up more than they are worth. A pristine OS X system is all that you need, it takes care of itself.
