Keynote is huge!

Hey.
Ive been going through my harddrive trying to erase some stuff to release more space. And now I stumbled into the Applications folder, and I noticed that Pages is 850 mb big and Keynote is over 1 GB in size!!!
If you compare to other applications like Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash that is waaay to big!
The only applications that I have that are bigger than Pages and Keynote is games like Call of Duty 2.
Is it suppose to be big because it contains alot of images (?) or is there something wrong?

yes, ALL the templates that come with those apps are INSIDE the app package. That's what makes them so big.

When I narrate my keynote presentation, why is the file size so huge?

Here are the steps so you can see all the files that make up your Keynote…
Go to the Finder and find your Keynote file and make sure that it has the .key extension on it. If it doesn't, click it and command i to view info and uncheck the box that says Hide Extension.
Delete the .key and change to .zip and then click the use .zip in the dialog box that comes up
Double click the new .zip file and it will change it to a folder
Open the folder there are the files
Close the folder and add .key to the end of the name and click Add in the dialog box (this will change it back to a Keynote file)
You might be able to do this and convert the voice narration to a smaller format.

  • Keynote 09 Magic Move has a HUGE lag in slideshow mode

I LOVE magic move.  My slides were amazing!  Then the upgrade happened.  And now magic move has a HUGE delay, sometimes even freezes the slideshow for 30 seconds at a time.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Has anyone figured out how to fix this?

    Then the upgrade happened
    What upgrade?
Check if there is a value set in Delay
    Try Resetting keynote:
remove Keynote;   you must  use an application removal tool for this procedure to work:    Appcleaner is free and simple to use
    empty the trash
repair the OS by holding the shift key and restarting the Mac
when the Mac is fully booted, this will take a few minutes longer than usual,  restart normally
install Keynote from the Mac App Store

  • Keynote 09 file containing video clips is Huge!

I'm a brand new user and the app looks like a real PowerPoint killer! Elegant graphics and capabilities. One key reason I bought it was to integrate looping video backgrounds on slides. I have tested this and the results have been hit and miss. For the most part it does everything I hoped it would and what PowerPoint (on Windows) absolutely CANNOT do...layer text and moving graphics on top of video. My first test file runs okay about 75% of the time. But sometimes the video clips freak out, looking like multi-colored pixel vomit! If I click around and select different slides it seems to go away. But I can't be confident in using this at a sales presentation for my company for fear it would crap out in the middle of a presentation.
That said, here's my first question: Is there a defacto-standard QuickTime format or codec that is more stable than others? I tried an MP4 QT movie as an alternative and all I got was a solid green box - no video.
Here's my second question: Why is my 3-slide file 427MB?! In Preferences I unchecked: "copy audio and movies into document." I deleted the clips, quit Keynote, restarted and re-inserted the clips and the file is still 427MB. The movies inside the file are 73MB, 103MB and 245MB...all pretty sizeable files. I'm going to try reducing the QuickTime movies using Compressor, but I wanted to ask here to see if anyone has the same issues.
    Thanks.

All depends on the size and codec of your .movs. I prefer h.264 as it uses the GPU to decode (so I am told) and looks superior to me and my film buddies over other codecs. Few Macs can playback uncompressed HDVideo, you really need a dedicated card like Blackmagic cards or the like.
Does not embed videos if you have de-selected relevant option in my experience. Try making a new file, setting save options (de-select audio&video files), save file. Drag slides across from old file and save. Should be good now. If still a problem, set option to save as a package. The right-mouse-button click on file in finder an "Show contents" that way you can see exactly what files have been embedded.
To tell you something you already know: the sum of 73MB, 103MB and 245MB is 421MB
Also, I have made HD res animations that play infinitely (except for Keynote QT time limit but mine can spool across slides) and never repeat in the same way (multiple variable loops) that are 20kB-100kB in size . That's one way around the size issue but only works for animations not recorded camera video.

  • Stream Huge, exported QT movie of Keynote Presentation?

I built a Keynote business presentation @ 1024 X 768. There's a lot of text to read and fine visual detail, so the size needs to be big. The slide presentation is 1 1/2 hours in length. The Keynote file size is 180 MB.
Due to inconsistencies with Keynote 's export functions to Quicktime, I used ScreenFlow to "capture" the Keynote presentation which I then exported as a Quicktime movie. The size of the movie, however, is *2.7 GB* -- pretty darn big... too big for Youtube.
I need to upload this and four other QT movies of about *1.3 GB* each, for streaming or downloading. Does anyone know of a web video service/site that allows one to upload, store and stream videos of extended length and large file size?
I've thought about exporting these as WMV files too, to cover all the bases, however, a friend suggested exporting the Keynote presentations as *Flash Video* because it streams more easily to both Mac & Windows platforms.
    Suggestions?

Your problem is that while on a monitor, you can see the entire picture. Any DVD player connected to a standard television is going to show, at most, 90% of the image...some may only show 80%. This is due to something called Overscan on televisions. To account for this overscan, you have to make sure that as you're creating your presentation, you have nothing near the edges.
A good rule of thumb is to create an area that's 80% of the size of your presentation (in 4:3 resolutions, widescreen, you only have to worry about the right and left) and, as you're creating, keep dropping this shape onto your presentation slides to make sure you're inside it. Then, you'll be pretty sure that even on the worst televisions, all you information will show.

  • Keynote (and other iWork apps) not saving properly!

    Hi all
I have had some strange problems over the last few weeks where I get messages telling me that iWork (usually Numbers) cannot save the files as 'something else' is using the file.  So I click 'save anyway' and I get strange files in folders, ie folder and file name is the original name plus some gooblygook.
I have got round this by deleting the 'extras' and carrying on.  But now I am preparing a major presentation in Keynote and suddenly it is not saving graphics some of the time!
For example I was working on a slide - and suddenly got a message that 'some problems occured' -
    Couldn’t save image. - image.png (Slides: 12, 13, 17, 18; Skipped slide count: 1)
    Couldn’t save image. - image.png (Slides: 12, 13, 17, 18; Skipped slide count: 1)
I have been working with this presentation for some time and have never encountered any problems - passing between my laptop and my iPad to review and modify (mainly viewing on the iPad and editing on the MacBook).
Any ideas what is happening?  I have a major presentation to give in just over a week and I don't want to use PowerPoint!
    Thanks
    Ian

I've been having some success NOT using any files that have previous images or audio in them, starting from a base template and then adding audio and video and photos that are already on my hard drive, not previous Keynote files. Today I needed five slides that were part of another deck and, you guessed it, they were corrupted (or missing) when I reopened the file, only the thumbnails remaining.
I closed the original Keynote file, placed a zip extension, then control- clicked to see the contents. The images were missing from the package. I then replaced the extension with .key and reopened in Keynote. The audio file had been there but not the images or the drawing, which I then searched for.
Yes, delete the weird file backups and make a backup of the original in the finder. Then lock it! (You're using Mountain Lion?)
I have a huge presentation tomorrow. I have five backups, including on a thumb drive.
    How much longer Apple?

  • Changing the entire design of Keynote from one standard design to another after one has typed slides on the initial design.

    Hi Everybody!
I'm just enjoying the freedom of using the Keynote App on my iPad.  I create presentations for someone who is not computer literate at all, but is able to show the slides of the iPad after a lot of lessons.
The problem is that I'm using the "black" chalkboard version of the design to show the slides as they are used to that type of "look" on the lecture blackboard (no they do not "like" whiteboards at all with their many choices of colors, nor did they like Penultimate, or other similar white board writing devices on the iPad.  They look too futuristic, or technologically complex for them to master).
So everything is going along fine, but the person does insist on having a paper copy of the slides in the order they are presented to use at the podium to make written notes in it. I will try again to teach that yellow lined "presenter notes" are available in the keynote app, but then they lose the full screen appearance of the slides when they share with those notes so they really refuse to use them preferring instead to use pen and paper.
Enough said of the problems I'm experiencing!  Why am I here?
I'm trying to find a way to print out the pages without using up my black ink cartridges!
Of course from day one I simply copied and pasted all 30-40 slides for each presentation into a "new" white background presentation and that worked and they came out perfectly as shown in the "black board" version.
But I'm looking for a "one button" conversion facility to change the design of an entire written presentation in Keynote on the iPad if anyone knows of a way.
I tried exporting the Keynote to PDF or Power Point via Email.  (I keep getting the message to use iWork, have not set it up or tried it as the person does not want their lecture notes out there "in public" and I didn't see any way that iWork stays "private").
But when I tried to use Email out of iPad, I found that only the  Power Point could be Emailed on my Gmail account attached to the iPad's Apple Mail system (is that correct use of the terminology?  Just learning all the abilities of this new device myself!).
For some reason the PDF version  says that it cannot be Emailed,  i.e. "Email failed"
When I open up the Power Point in my Microsoft Power Point or  Open Office Image program, the formatting and letters are all messed up.  Of course its easy (one button simple method)  to change that black background for all 30-40 slides at once and save it again to print out with white background.  But the letters run off the page, the letters are HUGE!  for the title lines on the pages with titles.  Just hundreds of errors that would take forever (even on a computer) to try and make look like the original does on the iPad so the person can associate the same printed out page with the same page being shown on the iPad from the Blackboard style Keynote.
Ok,. I also tried directly downloading the file from the Keynote to my PC using the iTunes application and synced it up.  That got it in faster, without copying and changing to EMail and Emailing myself on the iPad to the PC, but still the  formatting problems exist.
    Ready for my questions?
    1. Is there an app (can't do searching that app store very well or efficiently yet). that can overcome this problem and transfer Keynote presentations to the PC without all the resultant loss of formatting so I can print them out as White pages with just a click of the button on the PC program?
    2.  Is there any shortcut to getting the Keynote to the PC without all the complicated steps that I'm doing?  I have a book by ______ on the Keynote for iPad where I found most of the answers, but these were the only ways he suggested  I get the presentation from iPad to Email/PC.
    3.  Is there any possibility of my using Keynote on a "PC"?  I do not own a Apple with the required Intel chip to operate the latest Keynote program being sold, (09?)which from prior experience with the iPad and my older Apple G4 PowerBook I found I need the more advanced Intel Apple devices to interface with the iPad correctly.
    4.  If there is a Keynote available that works on a "PC", would it solve the formatting problem if I either Emailed it or Synced it up using iTunes?
    5.  What is the preferable setting or method for that process if it does exist (if it does not, who or where is the "suggestion" box for iPad to get message to Apple?  I don't know if they read these Forums for any ideas.
    6.  Finally,  why am I not able to export my Keynote as a PDF?  Is it because its too large a file?  (Even when I tried just four text only slides it still failed).   Maybe there is a secret button I do not know about yet on the iPad to activate this process so I can try out if PDF works better on a PC  (But I need a program that can alter the PDF background so didn't really pursue that method as it would be a dead end without such a PDF authoring program.
Any information anyone can provide on these questions would be helpful!
    Thanks for reading this!
    Help Me with Keynote

Many of your points are totally legitimate.
    This one, however, is not:
…To put it another way, the design of the site seems to be geared much more towards its regular users than those the site is supposedly trying to "help"…
The design and management of the forums for more than five years have driven literally dozens of the most valuable contributors and "regulars" away from the forums—permanently.
The only conclusion a prudent, reasonable person can draw from this state of affairs is that Adobe consciously and deliberately want to kill these forums by attrition—without a the PR hit they would otherwise take if they suddenly just shut them down.

  • The latest .key I created is huge,  .... Finder shows it as 5GB.  Other .key of similar slide total are about 300-500MB.  There is nothing different about this one.  It is just .jpg files (photos) and text.  No movies, no audio.  Why so big??

    iMac.  2.4GHz.  Core 2 Duo.  2GB SDRAM.  OS - 10.9.5.   Keynote - 6.2.2 v.1878.
I just completed a keynote slide show.  The Finder indicates it is 5.25GB.  It is 200 slides, no movies, no audio of any kind, no special transitions.  It is just photos and some added text explanations.  The individual photos are each 5-6MB, with about 190 photos total.  I have other previous .key's about the size in terms of the number of photos and they are showing in the Finder as taking up 300-500MB.  There is nothing different with this one particular presentation.  I usually organize and store my photos using .key after a trip.  Photos are downloaded into iPhoto (7.1.5) and then I build a keynote presentation by copying the photos as .jpg's out of iPhoto and into Keynote, with text as notes on or under each photo.  Something changed with the latest keynote in terms of file size.  But I can't determined why it required 5.25GB of disc space while other .key's of the approximate same size and content are only taking 10% of that amount.  Anyone have an idea what is going on with keynote is this particular instance???  I know I could compress it, but I want to understand why the last time I used keynote the file size was so huge.    Thanks for the help.

Some additional information.  In looking at the package contents info, under the DATA Folder there are several entries for each slide/photo in the .key presentation.  There is a long list of contents that shows each image as:
        pasted-image-1234.png
and a second list right below that identifies each image again in the .key as:
        pasted-image-small-1234.png
Both of these lists show image files of 15-25MB for each photo, even though the original .jpg photo was 4-6MB.  They list/show all of the images in the .key, but DO NOT show the added text.  So it appears the package contents indicates two separate .png files for each photo in the .key, but the file size for each is 3-5 times greater than the original .jpg that was copy/pasted from iPhoto.  And for some reason there are two copies of each.
There is also a list for the two following image/data files:
        pasted-image-small-small-1234.png
        st12-1234.png
Both of these lists show a file size of 100-200KB for each image, and again show all of the images in the.key.
Only the st-xx-xxxx.png list of images also show the added text.
Again it appears when I created the Keynote presentation by copy/paste images from iPhoto, Keynote stored multiple copies of each image as .png file several times larger than the original .jpg.   The completed Keynote slide show is so large is almost impossible to work with.  The system is so slow that routine commands are not completed, e.g., trying to "save as" into a .pdf never finishes and I have to "force quit".
Still trying to determine why this occurred with the 6.2.2 version.  Any chance I can delete all but the st-xx-xxxx image list and get back to a normal file size??

  • I'm editing ppts in Keynote exporting back to PPTs and loosing "hyperlinks" to movie files

I'm editing ppts in Keynote but have to use them as exported ppts to teach college in a Windows-PC environment
    Keynote 5.3
    MacPro OSX 10.75
    SUBJECT:
Loss of ppt function after opening in keynote then exporting as ppt
Educational ppts (Powerpoints) from Pearson play movies using PowerPoint or Powerpoint Viewer via a button located on some slides if the movies are located in the same folder as the ppt.
If I open such a ppt in keynote and immediately export it as a ppt, the ability to play the movie is lost; the click on the button just advances the slide instead.
Is there a preference in Keynote that might be set differently to prevent this behavior and allow playing of the movie from within the Powerrpoint application.
Note that the size of the file (via Get Info) is exactly the same after exporting the ppt FROM Keynote 5.3

    [email protected]

    Thank you Gary,
    I did just that last night;
Select the graphic object ("Play" Btn").
Open the Powerpoint "tools" floating pallet wd.
    Open the "Hyperlink" 'tab'
    select 'link to file'
then browse (open finder wd) to find and select the movie file.
Click "Open" and a powerpoint function returns the full path to the file and associates it with the "mouseUp" msg handler within the script of the "Play" Btn, which I expect essentially sends a doubleClick to the movie file ( ie. opens it) and it will then play in a new window from within some other application like Quicktime or Media Player if that other application exists on your computer. (I'm getting a (sandbox?) dialogue window first, telling me,  asking me something) that needs to be dealt with. I'm using Powerpoint for Mac and OSX 10.7.5.
(I expect that will not occur using a PC and some version of Windoz in the PC ed conference room environment or using emulated Windoz 7 within the Parallels 8 application on the MacPro, but I have not tried that since I only have the Powerpoint viewer installed in that Windoz 7 system as of the moment.
I've never really used Powerpoint or Keynote until recently because I have used my own presentation application created in Supercard which of course is much more flexible; from the ability to utilze windows of any kind or number on any slide, to all the power of unix via shell scripts and a huge set of functions native to the Supercard suite of stable developement tools.
Any suggestions how best to integrate movies into straight Keynote presentations ?
    Thank you again Gary,
    -Dan

  • HUGE file size for Pages (iWork '06) documents

I'm in the process of evaluating Pages in the hopes of dumping the last of my Microsoft programs (ie, Word.) I'm impressed with the ease of use; especially when it comes to being a little creative.
My great concern is the file size. I created a Pages document of 6 pages. It had text, images and tables. This relatively small document is a whopping 17.7MB. When I export this document to a Word doc and open it, it looks identical. The file size of the Word doc is only 1.4 MB. A HUGE difference. Is this a known issue or is there some sort of compression setting I'm missing?
I typically work with large docs and I don't want Pages files hogging all of my drive space.

The package shows image1.tif, which I added on the
first page. There's also an image1_filtered-9.tiff
which is HUGE. It's about 3MB larger than the
original file. It looks like Pages possibly makes a
copy of an image when you apply an effect like a drop
    shadow?
So if you don't want huge files, I guess you have to
stay away from the image effects...which is actually
    what made Pages interesting.
It is the adjustment tool which is causing the ballooning of your files.
If you use the levels adjustement, you will end up with an image which is labelled ~levelled.tiff. If you use the various other parts of the adjustment screen you will get files which are labelled ~-filtered.tiff, with or without version numbers.
There is no optimization of the various files as they are saved, and no user control over their generation. It would be much nicer if the adjustments weere done on the fly, or at least if a size-specific thumbnail were made for on-screen representation.
For now, however, if you are concerned with the size of your files in pages (and keynote, since it also happens there) then do the adjustments elsewhere. I suggest iPhoto, if that is where you have stored your items. You can always make your placed photo an image placeholder and replace it with alternative adjustments later.
(I tested this with a 4k file made for Livejournal, saved as a jpg. The resultant filtered and levelled tiffs were 40k. A considerable increase.)

  • Pasting in Keynote

I know there are going to be a lot of raised eyebrows at this, but trust me it works for what I need to do. I make "reward" badges for my company, and for years have been making them via - Image and badge compilation in Photoshop, and then a quick copy and paste onto a Powerpoint slide (6 to a page) and printed from there. I switched to a Mac a few months ago and bought iWorks. I am having a huge problem in pasting my "badge" into Keynote as the image does not paste at the size created, but arrives HUGE and has to be manually resized - a really significant waste of time.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening or what I am obviously missing and doing wrong? Having resized the image, if I then copy and paste it back onto the slide (just testing) the dimensions are retained and it is perfect, so it has to be some setting with the pasting?? Tried both paste and paste and match style even though I know that's for text. Had to rule it out as an option.
Please and thanks for any help or advice.

    Kathryn
A change is as good as a holiday they say, so now you have changed to the Mac don't stop there.
I suggest you try this instead.
    1. Open +Pages > New from Template Chooser > Layout > Blank+
    2. +Toolbar > Shapes > Create a shape+
    3. +Inspector > Metrics (6th tab) > Make it the size you want+
    4. Drag one of your Photoshop badges onto the shape.
    5. Click on the image and an Edit slider will pop up. Click on the little icon on the left. Your badge will shrink to fit.
    6. +Menu > Format > Advanced > Define as Media Placeholder+
It may be ticked already. You now have a badge that will shrink fit anything dropped onto it.
    7. Click on the image and holding down the option and shift keys drag out a copy to one side.
    8. Selecting both images drag copy down till you have all 6 badges. They will align and click to each other's edges.
    9. After doing any straightening out necessary, +Menu > File > Save as Template… > Give it a name+
This should now appear in the *Template Chooser* under a 3rd heading *"My Templates".*

  • Converting Keynote to pdf

I regularly convert files to pdf before sending to clients so that they have an uneditable version and so they can see the slides (since most have Powerpoint, not Keynote on their pc's). Converting Keynote to pdf causes a huge increase in file size and results in files too large for most corporate email systems to accept. When I zip the pdf it decreases in size only marginally. I have generated pdfs both from the print to and the export to functions and both have the same result. Anyone with any suggestions?

    Welcome to the forums!
If you are running OS X Tiger, you can try this:
    - Choose the Print menu item
    - In the Print Dialog box, use the "Copies and Pages" dropdown menu to select the "ColorSync" menu item
    - In the panel that pops up, in the Quartz Filter dropdown menu, choose "Reduce File Size". This will reduce the resolution of the images in the file (including things like the background), and so can greatly reduce the size of the file.
    - Once this item is selected, use the Print Dialog PDF dropdown menu to create the PDF
Unfortunately, Leopard has done away with the Quartz Filter options in the Print Dialog. However, if you are running Leopard, another option may be to export the presentation as images (you can control the quality, and therefore file size, of JPEGS), and then use Preview to gather those separate images into a multipage PDF.

  • Keynote to .pptx resulting in a corrupted file?

I've just recently updated both my home and work iPad's version of Keynote to v2.2.1. Unfortunately, there's a serious problem. If I try to send the file to PowerPoint (via email or Dropbox etc) the resulting .pptx is unreadable by Microsoft PowerPoint or the iPad's new PowerPoint app. It claims that "PowerPoint was unable to display some of the text, images..." and has replaced all my slides in the resulting file with blank slides.
Clearly the content is still there because I've been able to see it if:
    A) I re-import the .pptx back into Keynote from my Sent mail folder
    B) I preview the file in the browser version of my gmail account
    C) I preview the file in various "PPTX Repair" apps (that seem a bit dodgy and far too expensive for a hopefully one-off problem).
Strangely this only happens if I send a Keynote file that I already had on my iPad prior to the update (even files that have exported to PowerPoint just fine up until now). If I create a new Keynote file, it exports fine. If I copy a slide from one of my old files into the new file and export it, it fails just as above.
This is a huge problem as I've been using my iPad for years to create teaching resources in Keynote, which I need to send to colleagues as PowerPoint files.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Hi I'm having this problem too since I updated it's cauing me a lot of problems at work. if anybody has any adives that would be great

  • Keynote 6.5 Loses Ability to Keep Master Slide Objects Static for Object Transitions

A gripe that I'm hoping many of you are as infuriated with as me – and hopefully maybe someone can point out something I am not seeing.
In past versions of Keynote 6:
    Premise:
An object is placed on a Master Slide (not a placeholder)
That master is applied to slides.
An Object Transition (Cube, Revolve, Pop, Push, Flip, Zoom Perspective) is applied to that slide (which is followed by a slide with the same master)
    Result:
Only objects not on the master slide would animate during the transition leading to a premium feeling transition.
    Keynote 6.5
    Premise:
    Same as above
    Result:
All objects animate, including non placeholder Master Slide objects resulting in "too much" happening on screen.
As a presentation designer who makes a living on Keynote, this is a huge step back. I used to trick Keynote 5.3 into getting the effect that I wanted by taking screenshots of a blank slide and then making that screen shot the background of a slide. It was a time suck, often somewhat pixelated, a huge addition to file size (especially for templating), and cumbersome to make small changes like adjusting position of logos.
Apple... I hope one of your engineers are reading this and creates a fix for this in the near future.

  • Keynote eating all memory.

I'm having a weirdly horrifying problem with Keynote. Recently (as in, starting with a presentation I did on June 6th), Keynote has started to gorge itself on memory.
I have a Macbook Pro (recent model) with 3G of memory, OSX 10.5.3, Keynote '08 4.0.3. When I start keynote, I have about 1.6G of memory free (which, with little else running, is pretty horrible in and of itself) according to X Resource Graph. I have pretty hefty presentations (the one of the 6th was 140M, the one I gave today is 450M), because I have lots of video clips, sometimes 3 or 4 on a slide. One of the reasons I love Keynote is getting to have lots of little videos playing simultaneously.
I've been using Keynote since it came out, and have never had problems before.
But now, with Keynote the only thing running (I've tested that), every time I do anything (switch slides, edit something, play a show) it consumes a bit more memory; sometimes it just sits there (like a few minutes ago, when I was doing nothing and memory was disappearing at the rate of about 4M a second!).
The problem, obviously, is that when memory is gone, the machine starts thrashing, which is a huge problem during a presentation! On the 6th, I had no idea what was causing it, so it happened when the presentation started (because I'd had keynote open for a while, doing some last minute edits). Today, I quit and restarted Keynote before starting my talk, and 45 minutes in, memory was gone (show freezes, etc ...)
Restarting Keynote fixes things, of course (back up to 1.6G memory), but it soon happens again. Has anyone else seen this??

    Hi,
What is the application release, database version and OS?
