Keynote loses file

While editing a presentation, Keynote crashed. The edited file has been completely lost and could not be found after booting Keynote and the system. However, the recent items list of both Keynote and MACOS displayed this item. But selecting it did not lead to any response.
The item has been retrieved from Time Machine where it was in the folder where it should be. This folder is on the same drive as Keynote and the system. Shortly before Keynote crashed, either the system or Keynote displayed a message telling that the location for saving the presentation could not be found. Thus, I selected the folder manually and saved the file. Around 10 minutes later, the crash came and the file was lost. It is not on another drive or somewhere in the network.
Any idea about this disaster?
Thanks for helping!

Thanks. Now I know, that the message about the missing location to save is generated by Keynote. For the crash, I have no idea because this was my first crash of Keynote for long time. Normally, it is very reliable even with lengthy videos. I have even put four videos on one slide revolving and resizing all the time for about 10 minutes without any problem.

is there a procedure to open keynote 09 files with videos in the new Keynote without converting videos?
I have a big presentation with many video mov and avi files created with Keynote 09. When trying to open the file in the new Keynote the procedured crashes and Keynote crashes abruptly. It seens that an avi file is not converted. I have no more the old Keynote 09. How can this problem be solved?

if you right click or control click on the file, do you get an option to 'show package contents'?

  • Keynote 09 files not recognized as "Presentations" by Spotlight

I have folders with various presentations in Powerpoint, Keynote 08 and Keynote 09 formats. I have setup Smart Folders with search criteria that show me these presentations in a single view. I use the search criteria "Kind = Presentations" to narrow the search.
Keynote 09 files or packages do NOT respond to this query - Spotlight does not "see" them as being of the kind "Presentations". Keynote 08 and Powerpoint files are correctly seen as "Presentations". Spotlight sees Keynote 09 files simply as "Documents", and thus they do not appear in my presentations Smart Folder.
I have observed this on both of my Macs, each running 10.5.6.
Anyone here have a workaround until Spotlight is updated?

Good idea, Brie Fly. I hadn't used the more advanced Boolean options for search, so I modified the folder just to look for ".key" OR ".ppt" OR ".pptx" with the desired text string in the contents. Works fine until Spotlight is updated to automatically recognize Keynote 09 file types as being "Presentations".
For those who don't know about the advanced options in Smart Folders, just hold down the Option key while editing properties. Magic stuff happens.

  • What's with the Keynote 6 file format?

Uploading Keynote 6 files to our box.com storage environment (or to Dropbox for that matter) fails when done through a browser. In fact all browser uploads of Keynote 6 files destroys the file and makes it into a folder.
I there ANY way around this except zipping all files? Is this "packaged file format" just folders? Seem totally bizar that Apple would choose a file format that no other file system or protocol recognizes as a file.

I was getting this all the time with 1.5, I have not seen it yet with 2. I think it's a memory thing, it happens more quickly if I am running Safari and other stuff. Sometimes quitting Aperture then starting again does the trick, more often shutting the machine down and rebooting clears it. I also have some very large tiff's in the library, Aperture can't (I've not tried it in 2 yet) cope with them, always the unsupported error message. These files are between 300mb to 1gig, sometimes it justs hangs on to the 300mb but mostly not. By the end of the day it was a real problem, I could only export images 2-3 at a time, if I tried to email 10 low res I would get either an out of memory warning or unsupported etc.
Something holds onto the memory somewhere either in Ap or Safari or all things running.

  • Opening Keynote 5 files in Keynote 6 - movies missing

When I open Keynote 5 files in Keynote 6, the movies are missing. The files are created with "linked" movies, not imbedded ones. Is there a setting I need to change so that the movies link up when I open the files in Keynote 6?

The files are created with "linked" movies, not imbedded ones.
You will need to access the original video files and place them on individual slides.

  • Keynote '08 files won't open after cable replacement

After what I've read, I'm so glad I didn't have the Apple Store install Maverick when the cable had to be replaced in my MacBook Pro as a work around to a possible drive failure. I thought I had successfully reinstalled everything via disk and back up restoration, but no, my Keynote '08 files won't open in the original program that created them and need "a newer version." Not acceptable. Can someone help me with this? I teach and need my original files for editing!

I presume you mean Keynote version 4, part of the iWork 08 suite, (there is no version 08)
1 -  Delete the complete iWork 08 installation, you must use an application removal tool to do this correctly.
2 -  (Appcleaner from Mac Update is free and works perfectly for this)
3 -  Re-install iWork from the Installation CD and test

    *Apple's stated System Requirements:*
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (500MHz or faster) processor
    512MB of RAM; 1GB recommended
Approximately 1.2GB of available disk space
    32MB of video memory
Mac OS X v10.4.11 or Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later
    QuickTime 7.5.5 or later
The NVIDIA GeForce4 MX has a stated max 64mb of memory, but I could not see whether that meant it actually had that quantity. I would assume though that it had a minimum of 32mb.
Have you checked in *About This Mac* what the actual memory is?
Maybe Apple was optimistic in its minimum requirements.

  • Poor resolution for Keynote .mov file

    Hello,
Just getting started with Keynote. I'm putting together courseware and will be using Keynote to support the presentation. I have several .mov clips I need to integrate into the presentation. I embedded a .mov file into a Keynote slide and then saved and exported the Keynote file by SHARE > EXPORT > Formats: Web Movie, Small.
While I'm getting the media to work, the resolution of the Keynote .mov file is very grainy.
Are there some settings to be aware of to get a clear resolution with a Keynote .mov file?
    Thanks for sharing your insights.
    Ramone

You've probably picked the lowest settings and therefor the lowest resolution!
If you go to the export menu and chose a higher setting or even tinker the custom settings to get the balance of file size / quality you want.
It may also be worth making the slide size smaller (in the inspector)so when you export it's not being downsized in the same way if you need a smaller video (height, width, not file size)

  • Sharing Keynote 6 files.....

I am a math teacher and I share/exchange Keynote files via box.net (or sometimes dropbox) with other teachers.  Previous to this new version of Keynote, this was not an issue.  It seems as though all files created in Keynote 6 will not show up in box.net.  In dropbox, they show as a multitude of files.  What is the best and easiest way to share to one keynote file created in Keynote 6?  I've tried to export the Keynote 6 file to Keynote 09 and the exported file has many errors with equations created with Mathtype.  I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro running OS X Mavericks and 8 gig of ram.

Getting Keynote Presentation to Open Files in Dropbox -- on iPhone 5
I'm trying to view (latest version of) Keynote files already uploaded into Dropbox, on my iPhone 5 which now is running both Keynote and Dropbox.
When I view my Dropbox files on my iPhone, all the ones now labeled as .key show as 0.00B of content, but every other file format opens just fine (.jpg, .png).
When I'm on my Macbook Pro and view Dropbox, my .key files now click through to only .jpgs, metadata and index.zip but no actual Keynote presentation.  Note:  Someone else uploaded their Keynote into this Dropbox and I'm just trying to access it correctly.
    What am I doing wrong?
I've read about changing index.zip files to .key, and I've tried this on my laptop, but these won't open on my laptop either -- which also has Keynote.
I MUST have a mobile slideshow from Keynote screens on my iPhone 5 by Monday for a deadline, and this is creating a real problem for me.
    Any immediate help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  • Will I lose files if I update to Mavericks?

will i lose files, if i udate to Mavericks?

    Yes.
OS X is changed, but not users files. However the install can go very badly, and without a back up, cost a lot of money in data recovery efforts.
Always backup your users files to external drives before inflicting any major change or do so routinely to counter if the machine fails to function out of the blue.
Everything in software can be replaced, except your users files as they are unique and personal.
I had a boot hard drive just suddenly not work one morning. Dead as a doornail.
Only took a few seconds to boot from my bootable clone and call Apple for a replacement drive.
Make a bootable clone of your boot drive

  • Do i lose files when upgrading to Lion?

I am preparing to upgrade to Lion fromsnowleapard, i don't have a back up, but my question is:
Do I lose files when upgrading to Lion? I have microsoft office for MAC 2011 installed and files for garageband which I realy don't want to loose!

If you have files you don't want to lose, you should back up your system regardless of upgrading or not.  Buy an external drive and clone your system or use Time Machine to back it up.
The normal Lion upgrade won't delete your data if things go correctly, any hiccups and you'll need that backup.

  • Keynote 09 files to Keynote (iPhone)

I've created a Keynote presentation on my Mac and have successfully copied it onto my iPhone.
Trouble is - I've used fonts that aren't the standard Mac fonts - Is there anyway to get the look and feel of this presentation to remain the same (ie use the same fonts) on the iPhone Keynote App?

I need to open my keynote 08 files in my iPad2, my MBP runs on OS10.4.11, does it means that i have to upgrade my OS, to upgrade to keynote 09, and then export it to mi iPad?

    Bad news...
Although your answer gave me hope...and so said the Apple website...that i can buy the iWork 09 package in any Apple store, it is not true...
I live in China...170 km from the closest Apple store...so, i took the train and flew to Apple's Pudong Store...where they told me they don't sell the actual DVD software...just by Appstore...
So here i am...trying to figure out how to translate my Keynotes from my Tiger OS MBP, to my iPad...
Is Aple responsible enough to offer software that is not on their stores?...or...not giving me any solution, since i don't own a credir card?...
    So ****** off...
    Anyway..thanks for your reply...as i said...it gave some hope....for a while
    Cheers!

  • How to export a large, high-rez Keynote'08 file as a QT movie?

I have used Keynote '08 to create a 1.6GB presentation, 1024 x 768 resolution, 940 slides of stills and animation clips, navigatable hyperlinks on every slide. It plays and navigates perfectly well in Play mode.
The presentation would of course be most effective if I could export it as a single QuickTime movie - 1024 x 768 resolution. But I have not been able to do this, either on my own or with help from Apple employees at an Apple retail outlet. (I cannot remember whether we tested Keynote '08 or '09 at the store)
The best I've been able to accomplish is to break the presentation into ten parts and export them as ten QuickTime movies at a reduced resolution of 800 x 600.
I've been able to create a full length single movie - but only as a web-sized lowest quality (H.264) QT movie - in which the hyperlinks work but the slide captions cannot be clearly read.
This interactive education presentation would be so much more effective if I could export it as a single high-rez QT movie.
So I am searching for a solution to this problem, if it indeed exists using Keynote '08 or '09, and feedback/educated opinions from Keynote users who have encountered the same problem. Is Apple aware of this limitation? Might Apple address it in Keynote '10 whenever that arrives? Is there additional software available that could solve this problem?
    TIA

I want to be able to watch my 1080p work on Apple TV in the best quality.
The TV device is limited to max of 720p playback. While the TV1 did have an option to scale content for output as 1080i or 1080p, this was discontinued with the TV2 since 1080p native HDTVs will automatically rescale the negotiated input as/if needed for proper viewing. To maintain compatibility with the TV1 device, Apple presets will export 720p content only if the source file is larger than or equal to these dimensions and the frame rate is 25 fps or less. They will not allow you upscale smaller dimension files. Thus, your 1080p source files will be exported as either 720p24 or 540p30 files depending on the source frame rate. If you have an TV2 device and wish to ensure a 720p30 output, then use a free third-party app like MPEG Streamclip or HandBrake. Both have TV2 specific conversion options.
