Keynote on external display

When running keynote on a projector, the screen on the iPad goes blank. It didn't work that way during the launch presentations for apple so why is it that way for us? Not being able to see your slides unless you turn your back to the audience is really annoying. It raises the question why you would even offer external video at all?

When running keynote on a projector, the screen on the iPad goes blank.
Correct. The iPad's screen basically just becomes a clicker to advance the slides.
It didn't work that way during the launch presentations for apple so why is it that way for us?
Presenters at keynotes use specially-modified devices. That's why everything on the device's screen can be seen.
Not being able to see your slides unless you turn your back to the audience is really annoying.
Agreed.
It raises the question why you would even offer external video at all?
It's just a first release. Perhaps future updates will improve matters. You can indicate your desire for additional capabilities here:

  • Airplay external display with Keynote

The iOS Keynote help states that to show a presentation on a separate screen, one can connect to an external display, a projector, or Apple TV with AirPlay. The presentation should play on the connected screen, and your device shows the presenter display, which you can set to display presenter notes.
I have no difficulty showing the presentation itself on an HDMI TV using apple TV and AirPlay, with mirroring turned on. But turning mirroring off, as suggested by Keynote help, shows nothing.
Have others tried this? Had success? Or not? Thank you for any help!
    Henry

Thank you for your response, Nlangston. However, mirroring does not permit me to see the presenter display, on which I would be able to see my notes. Without my notes, I'd be back to the old days of using powerpoint where all you got to see on both your laptop and on the projector were your slides. The reason I went to Keynote in the first place, on my mac many years ago, is so I would be able to see my notes on my laptop while my audience saw the slides.

  • Is it possible to loop a Keynote presentation on an external display while working in another program (say numbers) on my laptop screen?

    I have a 2012 MacBook Air.
What I would like to be able to do is plug into an external display and project a looping Keynote presentation on the external display. The problem is when I play the Keynote presentation, my laptop screen goes black. Is it possible to play/loop a Keynote presentation on an external display while working in a different program (Pages, Numbers, etc) on my laptop screen?
    Thank you!

  • Keynote transitions do not appear on external display

I am practicing for a big presentation. I have a Macbook Pro connected to a Toshiba LED projector.
I have a beautiful Keynote presentation completed with great transitions, however I have 2 issues:
on the secondary screen for the audience:
    1. no transitions appear. The slide just advances to the next slide with no transitions appearing. Why would that be?
    2. The picture size for the viewing audience is too small. I'm not sure how to adjust that. I did go into screen displays, but I haven't found the correct setting yet.
I really am concerned about those transitions not appearing.I really want those. Anyone know how I can fix that?

There are a few things you should check:
    1) In the Keynote Preferences/Slideshow Preferences window: be sure that the button "Present on Secondary Display" is checked. This puts the presentation onto the projector and should show your transitions as you have created them.
    2) Same window, check the box marked "Scale slides up to fit display."
    3) To view the "presentation preview" on your own computer screen, check the box "Use alternate display to view presenter information" in the Keynote Preferences / Presenter Display Preferences window. Check the other boxes as you prefer. I recommend checking the "Ready to Advance Indicator" box because this very useful feature lets you know the status of Builds and Transitions.
    4) In the System Preferences / Displays window: Check the button marked "Detect Displays." This should set the optimum resolution and screen size automatically for the projector your are using.
    5) If the image is still too small, the projector may have a "zoom" control which will change the size of the projected image on the screen. OR, you may need to reposition the projector farther from the screen; this will increase the image size.
    Good Luck.

  • How to change external display resolution WITHOUT clicking "CONFIRM"?

I have a somewhat unusual situation. My MacBook laptop is actually now a ModBook (a pen-tablet computer), and as such I no longer have a trackpad attached to it. All of my inputs are via the stylus, tapping directly on the built-in display.
This works perfectly fine, except when I need to give presentations on an LCD projector (which is quite often lately). I like to use the projector as an external monitor, so that I can run the Keynote presentation on it while using my laptop screen as the presenter's display, with the upcoming slide, etc. If the projector doesn't give me an ideal native display option (sometimes, the aspect ratio for the  3 or 4 resolutions available in the Displays drop-down in the menubar turn out to be stretched or squeezed), then I, naturally, have to open the Display System Preferences and try out different resolutions.
The problem is, since my stylus only interacts by clicking directly on the built-in-display, I have no way of moving the cursor over to the external display when the dialog box with the "Click here to confirm change/You have 15 seconds..." message appears. So I can never click it ... so I can never confirm the new settings.
The workarounds I've used so far are:
    - Mirror displays (not ideal, as I need the presenter preview of the next slide)
    - borrow a mouse from someone (usually from a Windows desktop, frankly) and plug that in to briefly mouse over and click the confirm button
I'd love to find a software workaround that allows me to NOT mirror displays and also doesn't require me to carry around a mouse all the time (my laptop bag is already overstuffed...).
    Thanks.

  • 2012 MBP External Display Problem

I have a late 2012 MacBook Pro with a Retina Display running OS X 10.8.2
When giving a Keynote presentation with an external display, the confidence monitor (next slide, time, etc. — i.e., what should be displayed on the laptop screen) was displayed on the external LCD projector, and the full-screen slide was shown on the laptop display.  How can I reverse these? My presentation was saved by mirroring displays, but I'd like to get back to where my laptop screen displays the confidence monitor and the LCD projector displays the slide. I've been presenting talks on external displays for a decade with OS X and have never run across this problem. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Display issues when disconnecting from an external display

While I have found 3 bugs since my upgrade to 10.6 the biggest and most frequent issue is the MBP display when using and external monitor. When I connect a monitor all is well (mirroring mode). When I disconnect the MBP screen gets the major jitters and I can't stop it by doing anything in the Display Properties. The only way to resolve it to close the lid forcing the system into suspend mode. When I reopen all is well again. This is not an intermittent issue. Has anyone found this issue and is there a better work around?
The only other issues have been Mail crashing the whole system and Gotomeeting crashing the whole system when attempting to take Keynote into full screen mode.

I am have experienced both problems as well as if I have an external display connected to my MBP and move itunes video play back to the second screen then disconnect it from the MBP the video stays on the second display and will not gather back to the MBP display. The video is playing but off screen. Gather and detect screen do not work to get the video play back to the MBP screen.
When I reconnect the external display there is the video. I know this does not answer the original question, but from looking around the net it seems to be a growing issue.

  • Displaying iPhoto slideshows on external display

I'm trying to get my wife's MacBook Pro w/ iPhoto '09 8.1.2 to display the slidehow on an external VGA monitor. She's using the miniDisplay port to VGA adapter. The symptom of the problem is a slideshow on the built-in Display (OK) but a black screen on the external display.
    Current workaround:
The slideshow plays fine on the external VGA display when "Turn on Mirroring" is selected in Display Prefs.
    BUT....
She doesn't want to turn on/off mirroring every time she wants to show photos. There's no settings in iPhoto that I found that would specify using an external monitor. Quicktime Player DOES allow you to do this. Does this feature just not exist for iPhoto slideshows? Was the slideshow function only intended for a few people to huddle around a computer screen? Hopefully it's more than that.
My wife's comment was "MS Powerpoint is smart enough to display my PPT presentation on the external display, why isn't iPhoto smart enough to do the same thing for slideshows."
I think this is a reasonable expectation of Apple iPhoto but the solution eludes me. I really don't want to have her use the export function in iPhoto as this seems like an unnecessary waste of hard drive space and time. It seems like the feature is sooooo close to being great but it's not (Apple had enough foresight to include an instant slideshow function).

    Greetings,
As you pointed out, iPhoto supports mirrored display mode. In extended desktop mode, only the one display is used (this is normal).
When I want to use an external display / projector / TV with my images:
    __Use Quicktime player
__Use an AppleTV to stream iPhoto content directly to my TV
__Use Keynote (Apple's Presentation software kinda like MS Power Point) to play a presentation
If you would like to see iPhoto support extended desktop mode submit feedback from within the iPhoto Application:
    iPhoto > Provide iPhoto Feedback
    or
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
    Cheers.

  • Controlling external displays

When using a secondary display with my macbook pro is it possible to choose what is viewed on that external display?
say i could be running a presentation on the external display but be looking at another program on the macbook pro without it being seen on the external display?
    Thanks very much
    Rory

Sure. In System Prefs > Displays > Arrangement tab, uncheck the Mirror Displays checkbox. You can drag whatever windows you want to either display. FYI, Apple's Keynote lets you present on one display and view notes, etc., on the other.
    Hope this helps...

  • Use external display to present iphone screen for training

I have to teach newbies in my company how to use both the iPhone 4 and the iPad.
I was hoping, that there was a way to display the iPhone screen (exactly like we all see in the keynotes) so I can navigate around and they can see what's happening on an external display - instead of gathering over my shoulder.
There just has to be something - I see all the iphone costumes people use and I can't imagine there isn't a way for me to utilize it for training...
    Thanks...

The only way I could think to do that would be to take screenshots of the iPhone showing the things you want to teach them, and then you could buy the iPad VGA Adapter, which works with photo slideshows and movies. You might be better off taking screenshots on the iPhone and iPad and putting together a Powerpoint to demonstrate.
I guess in the Keynotes, Apple has their own custom setup that allows them to show a live feed of the iPhone screen. I hope this is helpful, sorry if it's not exactly what you were looking for.

  • How do I enlarge the "presenter notes" window when running my presentation on an external display?

In the latest version of Keynote, the "Presenter Notes" window is a small horizontal field at the bottom of the presenter's computer screen.  Only 3-4 lines of text can be seen.  This means that when you have a few paragrahs of notes, you have to scroll through them as you are presenting.  This is very cumbersome.  In the previous version of Keynote you could change the relative size of the slides versus the "presenter's notes" boxes when running a presentation on an external display, but in the new version, I can't find a way of enlarging the "presenter's notes" field.
Also, in the new version, the preview slide doesn't show the initial text on the next slide if that text emerges as a "dissolve in" build when you advance forward through your slides.  I always have the initial text on my slides automatically "dissolve in" after each slide transtion.  But in the new version of Keynote, when in presenter mode, I can't see any of the text on the "next slide."  This makes it difficult to anticipate what slide comes next . . . without going to the Navigator.  Does any one have a solution for this?
    Thank you.

I figured it out with the help of a post from a few days ago.  Although posted for a different problem, I followed these steps from Cornelia-I and it worked like a charm:
You can change the link of LR to the images from the network drive to your local drive, best done on parent folder level: right-click the highest folder in library left panel, and choose update storage location. In the opening dialog window point it to your internal folder.

  • Preview and external displays.

Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following:
    1) I'm using Preview to view pdf-files, when I hookup my external display
and make preview display in fullscreen-mode it uses my laptops screen
to do this. Is there a way to force preview to use the external display?
I've already tried setting my external display as the default display and than
it uses this one for fullscreen, but it would be easier for me not to change these settings each time.
    2) When in fullscreen-mode Preview blacks out the other display. Is there a way to turn this off so that I'm still able to use the other screen will preview stays in fullscreen?
    Thanks in advance!

i've wondered the same thing. for the longest time, when i have my MUCH LARGER display attached to my laptop, i can't seem to find a way to get preview to do full-screen to it.
dragging the window with images (and drawer) to the display before choosing slideshow (fullscreen), it makes no difference.
i'm not expecting there to be a solution. i can only hope that Preview in 10.5 has a preference tab for Slideshow options. It has tabs for other features, why not that one!? its really no difference than presenter mode in keynote or any other program that allows you to select the primary display for certain functions and features. Apple if you read this please add this capability. i also find it frustrating that there is no mention of Preview on Apple's support website for Application support. They have QT, iCal, Font Book, iSync, blah blah blah, but nothing for Preview. I know Preivew is more a component of QT, but it is a stand alone application, so Apple support would be appreciated.
Although i don't care too much about transitions, timing, etc., i can understand that some people would like to be able to control those options. i use Preview to do just that PREVIEW. It would make sense that I should be able to go fullscreen (slideshow) with a set of images in order to PREVIEW them. Having to import to Aperture or iPhoto to have a decent slideshow (fullscreen) mode just isn't good for my workflow.
i'll stop rambling. crossing my fingers.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15" External Display

I have a Macbook Pro Retina 15" that I want to connect to a projector via HDMI connection. How do I turn on the External Display to present a Keynote Presentation? I have not tried it yet, will the Mackbook automatically connect to the projector when I connect the HDMI Cable. Also is there a screen resolution setting  in the Macbook? The Projector Manual states that there is one by openning the apple in the upper left hand corner. I have tried that and I don't find any settings for resolution under it or in the Hardware section.

Analog VGA is obsolete. It is not surprising it is not well supported on newer Hardware.
Computer-makers want to transition to DisplayPort/ Mini DisplayPort, because the "heartbeat" of repainting the screen every 1/60th to 1/100th second is no longer needed. But that means Display-Makers need to have a screen buffer.
The Icon on the MenuBar only shows the last three resolutions, not all available.

  • MBP no longer drives external display @ 1920x1200

I have been using an external LaCie 526 display on my MBP at the native res of 1920x1200 for almost a year. Today after running a keynote presentation on an LCD projector (may be coincidental) I can only get the dvi to drive it at 1280x720. All of the standard rubber chicken tricks don't have any effect (reset PR, detect displays, turn on/off mirroring, etc). Like many others in this forum using the DVI to analog svga connection does allow the higher res.
    Any suggestions much appreciated.

Lots of people are having issues with external displays since there was a manufacturing defect with the nVidia 8600M graphics chip inside the Macbook Pro. You may want to run the Apple Hardware Test from the cd your Mac came with and see if it gives you any errors with the video controller.
