Keys in CS-5 - Save Alpha Channel AVI

Hello. I go shoot keys with green screen. On Location is good for some of that, but I have to remember to adjust the sound level next time. To show kids who did the scripts, I used the CS3 Ultra to quick ket a sample and dump on a background like we plan to use.
When I get into Premiere CS-5 I want to pick the take I like, trim the ends, key to transparent and save as an AVI with alpha channel. Liked the Ultra keyer when it was separate, but not sure about CS5 one, as controls were better organized in the CS3 version **.
1) Do I need to set up a line on timeline as alpha channel, in order to save same? If so which one?  These are just keyed person with clear BK.
2) Please help me with the settings so someone who makes the final steps, I think in another program, can open up the AVI files and have a good key to finish off. So far I haven't found one that will let me tick alpha channel to save.
**Yes i should find the Premiere fix list and ask for an ULTRA pop up of the CS3 design, if they are going to keep in Premiere.
3    PS)  Does Adobe have a set of books for the CS5 programs? When i got CS3 they offered me a deal to take the books. Saved me many times to be able to flip pages to find answers. Even a PDF of same might speed things along.

Look here for the steps to export an AVI with alpha: exporting video with an alpha channel (transparency)
I don't think you'll ever see Ultra as a standalone program again, as it's now integrated into Premiere Pro as an effect. I never used Ultra CS3, as I thought it was too rinky-dink, but the CS5 version is quite nice and easy-to-use (and get a great key) in most instances. It's not bulletproof, but Keylight in AE takes care of the more troublesome keys.
You can download a PDF of the help document for a particular application by going to the online version of the help docs, and clicking the PDF link in the upper-right corner. You can get Premiere Pro CS5's PDF right here: Adobe Premiere Pro CS5
You should also have the Community Help application installed along with the CS5 suite. If it doesn't open when you hit F1 within your app of choice, it should be available in the suite's application folder. It works well, and the help is updated frequently.

  • Photoshop CC is not showing save "Alpha Channels" to be checked!

This hasn't happened before!   As in... it didn't happen as recently as yesterday.
I have a 3 layer image, 2 of them with a large transparent area.  I will be importing this into After Effects.
It allows me to check "layers" but not to preserve the transparency.  "Alpha Channels" is greyed out.
When I import into AE, even in the media browser the transparency is gone.  The transparent area is now black.  Ditto when I drag it into the composition canvas.
    Mode = RGB, 18 bit
When I import the files from yesterday that *did* preserve the transparency, they still keep the transparency.  So I know it's not a problem in AE.
This is where it gets super weird.  When I take yesterday's file, open it, and try to save it under a new name -- TODAY IT DOESN'T ALLOW ME TO CHECK "ALPHA CHANNELS".
What have I done to take this option away?

    HOLY CRAP -
Indeed, I did not have that.
So I added a channel, and it automatically showed up as Alpha 1...... and my whole image turned red.
When I turned off the image channel, it went back to normal.
    Am I possessed?

  • Cannot save alpha channel as PNG. need help.

Hi, I am running PS CS5. I am working on my business logo and love the way it has turned out with a texture I added as a new channel (alpha channel). I am using a transparent background on my image, the only compatible way to save is PNG format.(and this is the only way to go with my website restrictions) So when I go to save as a PNG it isnt saving the new channel I have made. Is there any way around this? Any suggestions would be very helpful. I worked all day on this logo only to find that I cant save it the way I like it. frustrating..................

Ok, maybe this will help matters. In the beginning I did a google search on how to get the "distressed" look on my logo, this is the link I found, I did all that he said and did acquire the look I want, now I am having trouble saving as a PNG. When I choose to save as a PNG the alpha channel does not save (when I open the saved PNG file the alpha channel is unchecked). I dont know a whole lot about PS, I am new and dont understand alot of the lingo that alot of you are using, but maybe if you see the steps I took on this link then possibly someone may be able to help me. Thanks

  • CS4 (XP-32bit) doesn't save alpha channel

When I use the "Save As..." command to save a picture with transparency as a Windows bitmap file (.BMP), the transparency information gets lost. I selected alpha-channels and chose 32-bit in the BMP options dialog.
    In CS3 this works fine.
Any idea how I can get it to work in CS4? The target program can only read BMP-files, so my workflow depends on it.
    Thanks.

The BMP format does not support transparency.
A few BMP variants do support an alpha channel (not transparency, but some games use it for transparency). I believe all of those variants are under the advanced options section when saving.

  • (CC) Save all Layer Masks as Alpha Channels

    Hello,
I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a script to do this. I am looking for a script to simply check every layer for a layer mask and if there is one, save it as an alpha channel. The layers may or may not be in groups. No need to delete the masks, just save them as alpha channels. I have a lot of images with a lot of masks and it's a pain trying to save them manually! I thought this would be pretty easy but from what I've been reading this might be a little over my head. I would really appreciate any assistance!
    Thank you in advance,
    Danny

Any such script would fail with a error once it tried to exceed Photoshop 53 Alpha Channel limit.  If a document had 53 alpha channels to begin with the script would fail saving the first alpha channel it would try to save.  I know this for a have a script that tries to create my kind of collage template PSD files that has no Image layers but has alpha channels to map the locations where images will be populated.  I had to program the script to catch that there were more the 53 prototype image layers.
IMO with the exception of the background layer all layers have Alpha Channel its actual pixel map. This invisible Alpha channel maps the layers actual pixels locations and is used in conjunction with any enable layer masks when pixels are rendered for the layer.  What I was trying to do was to create a collage template that had Alpha channel to map the locations of where Image would be placed. . I would open a document the size and resolution I wanted the collage to have. Then add an empty layer the use a selection tool to make a 4"x6" selection and fill with pixels..  Duplcate that layer for as many image I wanted. And I would position the layer where I want the image to be located.  I would then  run the script.  It would save Alpha channels for each image location and at the end flatten the layer image prototype stack to stamp the image locations onto the required background layer.  Once I reached 54 image layers  the script failed and I realized that my Collage Scripts and templates were limited to a maximum of 53 images.

  • Issue (aka bug):  File compatibility and alpha channels

When I enable file compatibility mode on photoshop (so that previews and thumbnails show up), the thumbnail and preview will be wrong when there's an alpha channel in the channel palette. Specifically, the thumbnail will be masked by the top-most alpha channel in the channel palette. Consequently, there is sort of a work-around--if you create a plain white alpha channel and make sure it's the top-most alpha channel in the palette, then the preview and thumbnail come out fine. Luckily, this requires negligible extra memory.
If there's no alpha channel or I don't save alpha channels, the preview/thumbnail looks fine.
In spite of the work-around, a fix would be nice. It'd also be nice if there was a way to have a preview/thumbnails in Finder without the large memory penalty of compatibility mode.

Yes, everything in Bridge works great. However, the search function in Bridge is SLOW and a bit flaky (same problem on the Windows side as well) so I like to use spotlight instead for searching. Additionally, I like to use iPhoto to create collections of images that will contain photoshop files as well as others.
For now, it is workable for me to just use compatibility mode in photoshop and make sure all images with alpha channels have an all-white alpha channel at the top of the stack. The file size penalty is tolerable for now. If Apple ever fixes things on their end, then it's a simple script to convert my psd files back again.

  • DNxHD (.mxf) export with alpha channel

    Hello!
I'm working with one Finnish children's feature film which will star end of this year as an DIT. Movie will include lot's of green screen and the production want's me to do chroma keyed DNxHD 36 renders with alpha channel for AVID editorial. So far I have found out that neither davinci desolve nor assimilate scratch can't do it.  Is it possible to render DNxHD with alpha channel from AE? And can Avid import these files with alpha channel? All help is needed and appreciated.
    Cheers

Are you sure your alpha is there? (check by pressing "a" with the mouse over the view window).
Did you try telling FCP that there is an alpha channel? If you did "Send to Shake", Final Cut Pro doesn't expect that the QuickTime it's getting back will contain an alpha channel (It's meant to match your sequence settings). You might try dragging the output directly into the browser to re-import it and see if it recognizes the alpha...
As a matter of fact, maybe you can check in QT Player, load it into QuickTime Player, cmd-j, click on the video track and play with the transparency setting. Try Straight Alpha - that should lead to the background going white - then you'll know its coming out of Shake properly and concentrate on getting FCP to recognize it...
If all else fails (I did just try it here and it worked), maybe try a TIFF or TGA sequence?
    post back,

  • Replacing footage with an alpha channel

greetings gurus... I'm working in FCP 5.1 with DVCPRO HD footage 720p @23.98fps. I have an edited sequence of green screen footage that I am happy with. I then keyed out the green from the original source footage and exported that footage with an alpha channel (the background keyed out in AE7). My goal is to open my FCP project and replace the original source footage with the new keyed out footage so that my edit remains in tact but now with a keyed out background. I'm using the reconnect media function in FCP and of course the footage is replaced, but without the alpha channel.
When I import the keyed out footage directly the alpha channel is present; it just isn't present via the reconnect media method.
Any suggestions on how to pull this off?

it may be that for whatever reason FCP is not interpreting the alpha channel correctly when you use the reconnect option. for example, the reconnect option may assume that clip properties are unchanged. this may be esspecially true within the timeline, where instance properties are preserved.
you may be able to manually overcome this by adjusting the alpha channel information in the clip properties window
select one of the reconnected clips (one with the alpha channel from AE) and press cmd-9. see what setting is reported for the alpha channel. if it says None, try changing it to Straight.

  • How do I save a PNG file with an alpha channel in Photoshop CS5?

I have a PNG file created in Photoshop and I need to save it with an alpha channel for web purposes. I tried 'Save for Web & Devices' and selecting the Transparent box. Then, after saving, when I select 'get info' for the file it says there is no alpha channel. I'm stumped I can't seem to create an alpha channel from within Photoshop while I'm editing. Help!

If you save as a 24bit png with transparent checked photoshop will save the png with transparent background (ie alpha transparency).  The png will appear transparent in a web browser.

  • Smooth conversion of SWF to AVI with Alpha Channel

today i tried a program which claims the unique program in

    Hi there Schumi-z!
Well, it seems many poeple have the very same problem. Let me explain what I have got and what I look for.
I am working on a simple video editor. This program is to take a video as input, read the video and "chop" it automatically. Taken certain frames to different new videos, from one to 10 or more, according to certain parameters of the frame analized.
What I have got until today is a way of opening the video, reading it frame by frame, extracting a frame, analize it. But I'm yet to develop a way to write new videos taking a group of this previously separated frames.
I would like to know, if you are trying to solve the same or similar problem which in any time it envolves writing a new video file, so we can work together and solve this problem as soon as possible.
This work is also a part of my research to complete my thesis work. It would be an honor to have a quote mentioning someone from around the world.
Well, I hope to hear from you soon.
    Have a nice day

  • How to save a Targa with Alpha Channels in PSE9

I have PSE9 and need to create an image without the background (mk background Alpha Channel) and save as Targa. I can edit the pic, save at 32 at 200k but PSE9 does not allow to save/create Alpha Channel. How do I make the (background an) alpha channel and save as Targa?

Save your selection using Select>Save Selection, which creates a new channel (i named it Alpha 1 below)
Pse 9 will save the channel when using the 32 bits/pixel in the targa options dialog.

  • Save for web and using a alpha channel to optimise a jpg? Is it missing in CS4/5+ ?

    Hi guys,
I have just tried to do an old technique I used to use to reduce the szie of big background images, and they was to make a alpha channel and specify which areas of the image you want to be kept at the highest quality and what areas you wanted it to be low quality.
I dont seem to be able to find it anywhere in the "Save for web" screen.
This post here suggests it might have been dumped after CS3???
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/370291
    Any help would be great

As far as i know those features were removed from Save for Web after cs3.

  • How to save a layer as an alpha channel?

Is there a way to save a layer as an alpha channel? So later i can use it as a slection?

I dont know it will help you out or not, still sharing the instructions from where I get the idea of saving the layer here. Hope you will find it helpful.
Make the Channels panel the active panel.
Alt + click (Option + click) the Create New Channel icon at the bottom of the Channels panel.
In the New Channel dialog box, type a relevant name.
If most of the image is to be masked (not selected), click the Masked Areas radio button.  If most of the image is to be selected, click the Selected Areas radio button.
If desired, click the Color box to change the overlay color.
Leave Opacity 50%, unless you desire otherwise.
    Click OK.
The document window will be filled with either solid black if Masked Areas was chosen or solid white if Selected Areas was chosen.
Make the composite color channel active by clicking in the visibility area and displaying its eye icon .
    If Masked Areas was chosen...
The document window will show the image covered by the overlay color.
Type the letter d to make the foreground and background colors the default black and white .
If white is not the foreground color, type the letter x until white is the foreground color .
Type the letter b to make the Brush tool the active tool.
Using a brush size and softness of your choice, paint in the document window.  Wherever you paint with white paint, the mask will be erased.  Any part of the image not covered by the overlay color is being selected.  Painting with gray paint will partially select an area.
    If Selected Areas was chosen...
The document window will show the image normally.
Type the letter d to make the foreground and background colors the default black and white ..
If black is not the foreground color, type the letter x until black is the foreground color.
Type the letter b to make the Brush tool the active tool.
Using a brush size and softness of your choice, paint in the document window.  Wherever you paint with black paint, the image will be covered by the overlay color.  Any part of the image covered with the overlay color is being masked, or de-selected.  Painting with gray paint will partially de-select an area.
Repeat steps 2 through 11 as many times as needed to create individual custom selections.
When finished, turn off the visibility of the alpha channel by clicking the alpha channel's eye icon .
Make the Layers panel the active panel by clicking the Layers tab.
When the file is next saved, the alpha channel(s) will also be saved.

  • Keying with an alpha channel

I have a client that needs some footage that we shot over green screen delivered to them with the green keyed out and an alpha channel already in place. The end deliverable that they are looking for is the talent over an "invisible" background that they can simply drag and drop into FCP without having to key it themselves.
So my question is, how do I key out the green and an add alpha channel to preserve the "invisibility" of what was once green?
I hope that question makes some sense!
    Thanks!

The most straightforward solution is to export your keyed sequences
to Animation, PNG, or JPEG 2000 using millions of colors +.
Make sure the sequence is NOT RENDERED before you export.
(In other words, if you want to render and preview to make sure it's good,
do that, but delete your render file before exporting.) The only problem
is that the resulting files are huge and will really bog down your client's
    edit.
Another solution is to export two files per clip, with the second file
being a black-and-white version of the alpha channel.
To create the second clip, add the Channel Swap filter with
red, green, and blue all coming from alpha.
Then your client places the two files over each other, with
the "alpha" clip below the regular version, and the Composite
Mode of the upper clip set to Travel Matte - Luma.
In fact, if your client already has the clips, you can just
    send them the alpha versions.
The big advantage of the second solution is that you can
stay in the same codec, which should make your client's
    editing go a lot faster.

  • Flash Media Live Encoder alpha channel (chroma keying) support

    Hi,
When trying to encode live strem with alpha channel (32 bit) using the latest Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE) I have got no alpha chammel coming out from the encoder heading the FMS.
Is the new FMLE supports alpha channel encoding?
    Thx.

    Hi,
Right now FMLE does not support Alpha channel. Its Video encoeder encodes data from YV12 format.
Even latest release of FMLE is not supporting alpha channel. If you want this to be implemented then you can add this as Enhancement bug in Adobe site for Flash media encoder product.
