Keys-u-see keyboard

My partner has low vision and was given a Keys-U-See multimedia keyboard. Of course, as with most Adaptive Technology solutions, it is designed for PCs only. She can use the normal keys fine on our macmini with 10.6.8 (after I exchanged the command and option keys). However, I cannot figure out how to program the multimedia keys to work.
The mutimedia keys (buttons) are

Assuming I can get instructions on how to map the keys refernenced above, I would like to map 3 of the keys (Search, Previous, Next) to do different things depending on the app I am using when the key is pressed.
But at this point, I'd just like some help with mapping the keys in general. Anyone have any ideas?

You want a utility such as QuickKeys, Spark, other that can map function keys, command keys, option keys, control keys, etc... to function. Generally speaking they can provide either global assignements, or tie the key function to a specific app.

Thanks for the reply but there is no option tab or wake for administration use in mountain lion 10.8.2, I only have the wake for network access which is on, I didnt used to have this problem before snow leopard now I have to manually re-login after computer wakes and then access remotely ........

I accidently knocked some keys on the keyboard and firfox is now lost at the top of the screen, I cannot see menu items if I push the curser up some of the top appears on my screen but not all please can you help me?

I accidently knocked some keys on my keyboard. I do not know which keys my hand knocked but it caused Firefox to go beyond my visible screen at the top. The base of Firefox is still okay and views correctly. But the head is missing I cannot access my menus items such as Bookmarks etc. The screen does drop down if I push my curser up but not enough to show the menu items. Can you please help?

Problem with the volume keys on my keyboard.

I have a problem with the volume keys on my keyboard. This started a couple days ago and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. When I press the volume up or down buttons, the graphic appears on the screen as it normally would, but has no effect on the volume of the sound coming out of my speakers. Therefore, the only way to change the volume of music or whatever I am listening to is to use the volume control within the program/website itself (itunes, youtube, etc.) Even changing the volume on the volume icon at the menu bar on top of the screen does nothing. If anyone has an idea of how to go about solving this issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

First look into the Preference > Sound > Outpur whether internal Speakers are choosen.
The only Preference to delete I can discover is com.apple.systempreferences.plist in your home Library folder. You can try to move it out to the desktop for example, not to loose all your settings. Restart and see whether the problem still persists. If you don't know how to do this here some Terminal (Applications > Utilities) commands. Enter them by copy and paste followed by <enter>
mv ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist ~/Desktop/
restart
to get it back:
mv ~/Desktop/com.apple.systempreferences.plist ~/Library/Preferences/
confirm with "y" if you are asked to replace this file.

In Garage Band on iPAD, is there a way to make each key on the keyboard play a different sound effect?

I'd like to be able to play a number of selected sound effects using the keyboard in Garage Band. I've figured out how to import audio tracks from my itunes library into a track in Tracks View.

GarageBand on iPad does not have the SoundEffects instruments, that GarageBand on Mac has.
The closest you can get to this on your iPad will be the "Sampler" instrument. You can record a sound sample and play it using the "Sampler" instrument and adjust the pitch.
But you cannot assigne different samples to different keys.

Hard to press 'D' key on new keyboard

Hi,
I just received one of the new keyboards today (couldn't find a keyboard category which is why i'm posting in the imac section). Unfortunately, the 'D' key is hard to press down. It seems like there are two mechanical pieces that press down under each key, one on the left, and one on the right. The left one on the 'D' key won't press down easily as it should.
My question is whether anyone knows if it's possible to pop off a key from the keyboard, without damaging the key or the underlying mechanical pieces. I would like to see if it's something I can fix myself instead of sending it back and waiting days for a replacement. (I like the keyboard that much :))

Glitch with the Arrow Keys on the Keyboard

I apologize if this has been addressed somewhere before, I assure you I've checked the FAQ's but to no avail. Out of the blue my arrow, or "nudge" keys on the keyboard for moving objects incrementally stopped working. I have to select objects and move them with the mouse or with the "Move" menu etc. The crazy thing is that the keys work in other areas of the program, like scrolling through font's and such, as well as all other apps, Photoshop, Flash, etc. I'm just stabbing here to make sure I didn't unintentially disable those keys in the program somewhere. It's not a huge deal, aggravating, and very, very, strange. BTW, I have done the uninstall, reinstall but no change. Any input will be appreciated...

Something else to consider is the increment setting you have entered in your preferences.
If it's exceedingly small (say 0.001 pt) you may not see the movement from a number of keypress arrow nudges unless you're zoomed in tight.

Fast answers:
1. Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM and SMC. Doesn't usually 'cure' keyboard problems you report, but it costs nothing and only takes a few minutes.

2. Try plugging in a USB keyboard. Doesn't absolutely have to be a Mac keyboard. A PC keyboard will work for a test. If the typing problem does not occur with the USB keyboard, you have a temporary solution until you can arrange to visit a repair facility.
3. If your MacBook is older and has a user-removable battery, shut down the computer, remove the battery, and examine it for signs of 'bulging' or swelling. Then connect the computer to the Magsafe power supply, without reinstalling the battery, and turn it back on. If the keyboard problem has gone away, it was likely caused by a swelling battery.

If there are problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.

Hide/show loupe key on italian keyboards

Hi,
i'm not able to find show/hide loupe key on my italian keyboard layout. With A1.5 the key was < (instead of ' for USA ketboard) but with A2 < dont works!?

I don't know what the key would be - but you can find out, and change it by going to the Aperture->Commands->Customize menu item. There you'll see a full keyboard, use the search field at top for "loupe" to find all the loupe related bindings. You can drag bindings onto any key of the keyboard, and also use modifier keys when dragging to assign commands to modified keys.

Stiff Keys on my keyboard

Here in the past couple of days some keys on my keyboard have become stiff and hard to press down, compared to the rather easy use prior to this. My space bar, all my letters from "m" to the shift left are stiff, along with the space bar on over to the "fn" key. Anyone know why this might be happening?

Also I'm using Snow Leopard, but I don't see why that would possibly make the keys stiff.

welcome to the forum
there might be different reasons. the most common one would be a drink containing sugar spilled over the keybord, so that the keys are getting sticky. i guess that is not what happened to your MB.
if you mean that the electrical contact is difficult to get, then it would be an electronic problem, most likely at the connection of the keyboard to its read-out.
if you mean that the keys are mechanically harder than before, then it could indicate a misalignment between KB and chassis of your MB.
in both cases i would check with Apple - especially if it is still under warranty. in any case, if you don't have experience in these matters, don't try to open it yourself!

MacbookPro 2014 Keyboard - where is pipe key on British keyboard?

I have a MacBook Pro (2014) and cannot type the pipe key. The pipe symbol appears on the physical key above the backslash, which suggests that holding the shift key while pressing the key should type a pipe symbol - however a tilde (~) results.
I have tried all sorts of combinations with the Alt and **** keys on all the keys on the keyboard with no luck.
Could anyone help me with this information?

If you are seeing a tilde typed when you expect a pipe, you may want to double check to see if your keyboard layout/input source has been set to "British-PC" as opposed to "British" or other English language layouts. On the British-PC layout, the tilde is above the right return key and the pipe key is moved to the key to the left of the "1" key. For more information on changing layouts, or to see what keys the computer is mapped for if they don't match your physical keyboard markings, you may find the following articles helpful:

Yoga 3 Pro - Certain Keys Missing from Keyboard. How to virtually use them?

I have bought this for about a week and was not happy about the combination of "Home" and "End" keys since I use them a lot. In using VMWare I noticed there is no "Insert" key on the keyboard at all, thus I cannot use the Ctrl+Alt+Insert functionality in my virtual machines. Today, a random combination of keys was pressed on the keyboard and the "Scroll Lock" was enabled, and guess what: There is no scroll lock in the Yoga 3 Pro! Now I have no idea how to disable this again and non of the forums or manuals have addressed this.
(Lenovo design team has made is specifically hard for users. Not only the keyboard layout and certain keys are removed, but even I cannot find a spare chargin cable for my officec. They have changed everything - even Yoga 2 Pro charging cable is not compatible - and yet not available in the market. Not a very smart strategy )

I'm sorry to hear about your problem. I had to really take a look at my own Y3P to realize there is no Insert key, I guess I got too used to the touchscreen
To get rid of the Scroll Lock you can press the combination Fn+C.
Alternatively you can also go to the Control Panel, then "Easy of Access Center" and start the On-Screen Keyboard, you can disable the Scroll lock from there too.

Some of the shortcut keys and directional keys on the keyboard are not working in FF 4 RC1 (i.e. Tab, Ctrl+C, arrow keys). They work fin in FF 3.6x and other applications.

Crtl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+X, Tab, and arrow keys do not work at all in FF4.0b13 and later. I am not sure about earlier versions as this is the first version I have tried.

I found this helpful article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1381) and worked my way through the section "Some keys don't work as expected".
All the following functions/settings are disabled or turned off:
Text to speech / Speak selected text when the key is pressed
Slow Keys
Mouse Keys.
The keyboard viewer just confirms my list of keys that are not working.
Starting in safe mode makes no difference; nor does booting from the Mac OS X Install Disc and running Terminal from the Utilities menu. The same keys as before fail to work.
This seems to confirm that it's a hardware issue. Anyone have any suggestions?
