Keystroke delay

when editing a pages document I'm getting a delay of 1 -2 seconds between the keystroke and the command showing on the document, this doesn't happen when I start a new document only when I edit, any ideas how I can remedy this?

How much RAM do you have?
Does this happen if you have only Pages open?
Do you have any 3rd party utilities installed?
Are the files stored somewhere other than your internal Hard Drive?
Do you have Time Machine/iCloud, or both on?
You can check if there are any other applications that may be interrupting your typing or eating your RAM with Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder (inside the Appliactions folder).

  • Keystroke delay in Mail.app when autosaving

This is a very obnoxious problem I'm having in Mail.app.  Apologies if it's been addressed elsewhere; kindly point me in the right direction if so.
    First, off:  the specs.
2011 unibody Macbook Pro, 2.3 Ghz Core i5, 8GB RAM.
    Running Mountain Lion, 10.8.1
Since installing Mountain Lion, Mail.app has had an intolerable keystroke delay whenever it tries to autosave a message.  Which seems to happen about every 15 seconds or so.  What will happen is I'll type for a while and then Mail will freeze up for a few seconds while it autosaves the message.  When it resumes, I've usually lost everything I've typed during the time when it's frozen.
It's beyond obnoxious.  It's intolerable.  I've searched around to see if others have had a similar problem, and haven't found much.  I've dug around in the preferences to see if there's an autosave setting with no luck.  No idea what's causing it.
I'm about at the point where I'm considering abandoning Mail.app entirely for a third-party e-mail solution, but I'd rather not spend the money.  Anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?

I have the same problem, although the characters I type do end up on the screen after a while. Just the screen updates are frozen, so you don't see what you're typing (or erasing using backspace, even more annoying if you keep it pressed and end up erasing half your message). Very, very annoying, almost unbelievable in 2012. This type of lag would have been unacceptable 20 years ago. Processing speeds have increased how much exactly in the mean time? This does indeed appear to be related to autosave, but it's beyond me why this can't simply happen in a separate thread so you can keep typing.

I had a similar problem when working on a long Pages doc (40,000 words). The glitch only occurred on this one Pages file and affected no other applications. I fixed it by duplicating the file, trashing the original and working on the new document. I have no idea of the cause of the problem.

  • Need an updated ARD login script for Mavericks

We've been using the script below for some years now with very few issues (other than for some reason the multiple returns at the end were needed for some stubborn machines).
The script continues to work nicely in 10.9--assuming that the cursor is in the name field of the login screen.  More often than not, the cursor isn't.  Because I've yet to teach myself/learn AppleScript, I wander around the lab and manually click into the name field.
A:  Does anyone know how to tell the machines to place the cursor into the name field?
B:  Could maybe a future OS update restore the good old days where the cursor blinking in the name field was the default?

  • Repairing Permissions in Disk Utility (10.7 MBPro 2.4GHz), but still slow! Any advice upon reading my output?

    Current scenario:
2-yr old up-to-date Lion 10.7 on my MBPro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHZ upgraded RAM to 6GB is suddenly showing sluggish startup and opening applications very slowly (non Pro Apps and Pro Apps alike)…when multiple apps are open simultaneously (simple stuff like: Safari, Photo Booth, etc) and I have a handful of tabs open in Safari, I am getting slow response in every category from time it takes to open an application, all the way down to simple keystroke delays. This is becoming really annoying and having a direct negative effect on my ability to be efficient and multitask! so I zap the PRAM a few times using the startup key combo, and try running DiskUtil to repair permissions. But alas, I seem to get the same thing each time after repair/verifying permissions a couple times… my output pasted below.
My QUESTION: I know from articles I've read on this discussions board that I can all but ignore the output lines like "ACL found but not expected on…" but is there anything in the output i've pasted below that I should be worried about? Anything that might be pointing to a bigger problem?
I also startup in singleuser mode and run /sbin/fsck -fy once every 10 days or so…is this the right thing to do? My overall speed and efficiency is not improving. Please lend me your infinite knowledge, apple gurus. Thanks!

  • SNS/1/40000000:TsOP-128.000

Anyone know what might be causing my MB Air to slow down quite dramatically, keystrokes delayed, focus select delayed, a lot of beach-ball action...it's a three-year-old refurb which does have quite a lot of stuff on the disk but is extremely well organised. Strangely enough it also works very quickly from power-up after hibernation, for about a minute, and then reverts to the slowness again. Would be obliged for any assistance. Thanks. RB

For what you posted I'd say that you are experiencing temperature problems. Is your laptop's fan making much noise when the slowdown happens?
Early Macbook Airs are known for this and the slowdown you experience is caused by the system throtling down the CPU to keep the temperature from reaching dangerous levels.
There are some solutions to this, most people recommend using an App called CoolBook (U$D10) and have experienced good results, others use SMCFanControl to keep the fan spinning at higher rates, but constant fan noise can be a pain.
Another reason for the behaviour you describe could be a failing Hard Drive, early Macbook Air's 80gb units are not famous for being reliable (or fast).
I hope this info helps you solve the problem

  • Every keystroke or mouse click results in a 10 sec or more delay before responding. Suggestions??

Each time I type something or click my mouse, there is a delay before the keystrokes are recognized, or the mouse click has any results. This delay be as little as 5 secs but go up to as much as 15 secs. Very frustrating and a time waster if you add it all up.

  • First keystroke after idle has a slight delay

So when I don't touch the keyboard or trackpad for about 5 seconds the first keystroke I make is delayed for about .5 secs which is annoying when recording in Ableton with the MacBook keyboard or when gaming. After the initial key press everything works fine until I don't touch the machine for 5 seconds again.
I'm on the 2012 i7 quad core MacBook so performance isn't the issue. I'm guessing this is some power management thing?

Hi! I have a similar trouble on my Macbook Air mid 2011! The first keystroke is ignored (as if my keyboad has fallen asleep)... Any ideas?

  • Intermittent delay start stop keystroke typing delay

    Hi
This is now a major problem but I am unsure if software or hardware issue.
I am typing normally and for what ever reason the typing stops - keyboard stops entering data.
I hit a key, no response, keep trying a single key and then it starts or keep typing and miss half the word typed.
I have had a recent MLB replaced and new battery from apple, now this problem has appeared.
Have reset pram, repaired permissions but the problem persists.
Any other suggestions on what to do, look for before losing the book for another week?
    Cheers

  • Delayed keystrokes

Has anyone experienced key stroke delays for key pad after updating to ios7 on an iPhone 4 please? have rebooted several times but it still the same issue

As odd is at may seem, some people have said that turning off "Documents and Data" in their iCloud settings has resolved this particular issue for them.
Others have reslved it by restarting/resetting their devices:

  • Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection - Delayed Keystrokes

As I have to access a Windows Server Server 2008 R2 machine at work frequently, I downloaded Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client. Unfortunately, I noticed that it's hardly possible to work fluently on the remote machine because every single keystroke takes up to one or two seconds to be displayed.
Therefore I tried to access the server from a virtual Windows XP installed with Parallels on my Mac. First I wasn't able to see any improvement by using XP but then I changed the preferences of the virtual machine. As soon as I'd changed the network mode from "Shared Network" to "Bridged Network" Remote Desktop on Windows worked a lot more fluently and characters appeared right after striking a key.
Of course I would prefer to use the Remote Desktop Client directly on my Mac if it was possible. As I had such a strange experience by changing the network mode in Parallels, I wondered if there were any known firewall or network adapter issues on a Mac which would explain all these problems.
If you had any ideas I'd be glad to hear them.

I use RDC to access a Windows machine remotely via a Juniper Networks remote access setup. I haven't experienced excessive keystroke lag on either a G4 iMac (Tiger) or an i7 iMac (Snow Leopard) using a DSL connection.
Here are two things to check, assuming the problem is not with your Internet connection:
    1. Make sure you are using version 2.0.1 of RDC, unless your Mac is running an OS X version older than 10.4.9.
    2. It looks like you're running an Intel Mac so make sure RDC is not running under Rosetta. To do this, highlight the RDC app in your Applications folder (or wherever you have it installed) and click the "More info" button (or use the "Get info" menu choice in the Finder). If the "Open using Rosetta" box is checked in the resulting info screen, uncheck it.

  • Delayed response to keystrokes after clicking on line

Does anyone else have this same problem. When I click on a line of type in Pages to make an edit  and then try to type it takes a few seconds to respond. I noticed it originally working on my 2009 15" Macbook Pro, but I've upgraded to a Retina Display and it still occurs.

I can't say I've particularly noticed in Pages, but I do in Safari & Mail on my Macs running 10.8.2. Finder seems to "beach ball" frequently. I suggest leaving feedback for Pages & OS X.

  • Since last update, delays occur before response to keystrokes

There is a pause of half-second or more between pressing key and response appearing on screen. This makes scrolling down to desired bookmark, for example, very difficult if not impossible

I've noticed that there seems to be a few similar issues related to iTunes 10.3.1 recently.
I'm guessing that Apple stuffed up with this update.

  • Intermittent missing keystrokes on macbook pro keyboard..hardware/software?

I have a mb pro 2ghz core duo and have recently been having keyboard problems. Intermittently, my keyboard will not recognize keypresses from the following keys:
    zero -
    p
    ; return
Sometimes when I reboot they work. I have to carry an external keyboard with me on the road otherwise I can't use the laptop. Do you think this is a software or hardware issue? When I use Cmd-S at startup, I boot to the root prompt and things seem to work at the command line interface. I type reboot to get into os X gui environment, then its hit or miss. I hate to send in my mac for a software issue and wish someone could shed some light on this for me.

Search "keyboard delay", "keyboard sleepy", or "missing keystrokes" . At this moment no fix. Just a half worarround.

  • Keystroke return and ASCII character 13 and 10 not working in

I have the following script to opens a web page of my internal telephone switch (all in the local network) and fill in the two fields that come up and needs filled out in order to log in.
    tell application "Safari"
    activate
    open location "http://192.168.1.90/"
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    delay 1
    keystroke tab
    delay 1
keystroke "" -- Note: Username goes here if one is wanted/needed
    delay 1
keystroke "XYZ" -- Note: Password goes here if one is wanted/needed
    delay 1
    keystroke (ASCII character 13)
    end tell
All works fine, it skips the first field (the login name is blank). Puts the password in the next field. However it refuses to activate the “log-in” button of the login window (the one that is blue and normally can be done with the enter key).
    I tried:
    keystroke (ASCII character 13)
    keystroke (ASCII character 10)
    keystroke return
    keystroke enter
Non of them do the job.
    Any suggestions please? Thanks.

    Consider replacing ...
    keystroke (ASCII character 13)
    ... with ...
tell document 1 to do JavaScript "document.myform.submit()"
... where 'myform' will have to be replaced with the forms' name.
To obtain the forms' name ...
    01. Perform a right ('control' if single button mouse) button click on the form based web page. A contextual menu will appear.
    02. Select the 'View Source' menu item. A new 'Safari' will appear with the title beginning with 'Source of ...'.
    03. Look for a line similar to ...
    <form name="myform" action="submit-form.php">
... Note, the name="myform". This is the forms' name. Whatever is between the name="" is what you need to substitute 'myform' with, in 'tell document 1 to do JavaScript "document.myform.submit()"'.
    I entered ...
tell application "Safari" to tell document 1 to do JavaScript "document.myform.submit()"
... in 'Script Editor', and visited 'JavaScript Form Submit example'. When the AppleScript code was executed, the web page responded accordingly.
New test of code. With 'JavaScript Form Submit example' again displayed, the following code ...
    set tValue to "ChangeAgent"
    tell application "Safari"
    tell document 1
    do JavaScript ("myform.query.value=\"" & tValue & "\"")
    do JavaScript "document.myform.submit()"
    end tell
    end tell
... was entered into 'Script Editor', and executed.
The results were as expected - the resultant web page reported ...
Great! The Form is Submitted Successfully!
    Query:'ChangeAgent'
    Back
... And, the code was condensed even further ...
    set tValue to "ChangeAgent"
tell application "Safari" to tell document 1 to do JavaScript ("myform.query.value=\"" & tValue & "\"; document.myform.submit()")
    ... producing the desired results.
