  • How can I detect and remove keystroke logger software?

I suspect that my soon to be ex-husband has surreptitiously installed keystroke logger software (or other "spyware") onto my MacMini.  Is there a way to detect it and remove it?   Any recommendations for protection software? Or, is it better to wipe the machine clean and reinstall software and files?  I cannot afford a new computer right now, so buying a new one is not an option.

If you know or suspect that a hostile intruder has either had physical access to it, or has been able to log in remotely, then there are some steps you should take to make sure that the computer is safe to use.
First, depending on the circumstances, computer tampering may be a crime, a civil wrong, or both. If there's any chance that the matter will be the subject of legal action, then you should do nothing at all without consulting a lawyer or the police. The computer would be the principal evidence in such a case, and you don't want to contaminate that evidence.
Running any kind of "anti-virus" software is pointless. If I broke into a system and wanted to leave a back door, I could do it in a way that would be undetectable by those means—and I don't pretend to any special skill as a hacker. You have to assume that any intruder can do the same. Commercial keylogging software—which has legitimate as well as illegitimate uses—won't be recognized as malware, because it's not malware.
The only way you can be sure that the computer is not compromised is to erase at least the startup volume and restore it to something like the status quo ante. The easiest approach is to recover the entire system from a backup that predates the attack. Obviously, that's only practical if you know when the attack took place, and it was recent, and you have such a backup. You will lose all changes to data, such as email, that were made after the time of the snapshot. Some of those changes can be restored from a later backup.
If you don't know when the attack happened, or if it was too long ago for a complete rollback to be feasible, then you should erase and install OS X. If you don't already have at least two complete, independent backups of all data, then you must make them first. One backup is not enough to be safe.
When you restart after the installation, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process for a new computer. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup in Setup Assistant.
Select only users in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications, Other files and folders, or Computer & Network Settings. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
Reinstall third-party software from original media or fresh downloads—not from a backup, which may be contaminated.
Unless you were the target of an improbably sophisticated attack, this procedure will leave you with a clean system. If you have reason to think that you were the target of a sophisticated attack, then you need expert help.
That being done, change all Internet passwords and check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Do this  after the system has been secured, not before.

  • I believe my iPad has a keystroke logger-how to detect-how to remove?

I Believe my iPad has a keystroke logger. It is the only way I have accessed my online banking which has been hacked.
is there a way to confirm this?
is there a way to remove it?
my iPad is not jail broken, never has been.
only accessing bank using my home wifi network which is password protected.

I'd contact bank and turn off internet access to your account. I might even change banks.  I know this would be a pain, but do not know what to do.
Read through all the stuff below to increase security, but forgoing internet access to your account is the only way to be sure.
I do not use Internet banking.  Everyone is being hacked these days. I have remote access to one of my bank accounts, but cannot do much but look at my account.  I have a discover card and Discover lets me take out $80 in cash for free when I am at the grocery store.  I use a credit card for every payment that I can.
As someone said earlier, you could reload the software on your iPad.
You could try a different browser, like Chrome.  In your situation, I'd recommend using another browser.  ios is sandboxed so in theory, no other application should be able to access the data in Safari.  That said, there is a lot of malware associated with web sites these days.  Perhaps, Safari picked up some junk. Pick another web browser. Use it with only your bank and that's it.
Restore to factory settings by loading the latest version of ios that your machine will support:
Do a full backup of your device.  Twice is best -- cloud and computer.
While I recommend backing up, I do not recommend using the backup to reload things on your iPad.  Do everything manually.

  • Likelihood of having Keystroke Logger or other 'infection'

Today whilst in Safari I had an annoying pop-up that took two attempts to get rid of. Shortly afterwards the wifi base unit went down and had to be rebooted. Moments after rejoining the internet I had a message appear telling me another computer was trying to access my network, and gave an IP address.
I Closed this message and it never reappeared
The wifi is at my place of employment, through a regular phone line, not a company one and is used by several other people.
I've never seen this message when the wifi has comeback online previously.
If I do a clean install, I'm running Lion, will I have to put on Snow Leopard first then Lion back over the top.
    Thanks,
    Steve.

If I do a clean install, I'm running Lion, will I have to put on Snow Leopard first then Lion back over the top.
You can boot into Recovery HD (Hold ⌘R on Boot), Select: Disk Utility,  Erase Macintosh HD, Quit Disk Utility, then select: Reinstall OS X Lion

  • How to see all previous keystrokes?

How can I see all the previous keystrokes on my mac? the mac is a new IMAC Intell. Is there a way to see all of the keys that were used? Let me know. Thanks.

You would need a keystroke logger. http://keystroke-loggers.staticusers.net/mac.shtml

  • May need keystroke logging software removed?

My husband may have installed a keystroke logger on my MacBook Pro. I am out of country for another five months and do not have my original disks with me. I have version 10.6.8 installed and would like to know if there is anyway I can reset my Mac without a start up disc. I'm trying to research myself but if anyone would help with info I would appreciate it.

Just to be clear. You use Disk Utility to Erase the Macintos HD. Name that partition Macintosh HD again, if the name doesn't stick. Then once that is done exit disk utility and select Reinstall Mac OS X. You will need your Apple ID and the password for it. OS X Mavericks will be downloaded from the internet again and be installed on the Macintosh HD.
Make sure you use the same Username and password as you had before, that just makes it easier for copying files back.
I also suggest you go into your email accounts through the web site based email system of your email providers and change your login password for each account. That will stop anyone that knows the account name, MyMame @ MyISP. com/net/org, and password from logging into it.

  • Keystroke loggers

Is it possible for someone to email you an attachment that would secretly install a keystroke logger on a Mac running OSX? If such a thing exists and could be done, is it possible to somehow detect it and delete it?
I had an odd experience with my iMac this past week and some have suggested that such a keystroke logger may have been installed on my machine by virtue of an email attachment which I may have opened.

    Possible? Yes, of course.

    Possible? Sure.
I had an odd experience with my iMac this past week and some have suggested that such a keystroke logger may have been installed on my machine by virtue of an email attachment which I may have opened.
What was the odd experience? What was the e-mail attachment? Was it a program of some sort. Did it ask for a password and did you give it one?
It is extremely unlikely that someone e-mailed a hidden virus to you that is tracking your keystrokes. However, it is certainly possible to email a keystroke logger. If you were to e-mail some keystroke logger to 10000 random people, about 3 or 4 would probably install it. There is a reason why SPAM is still such a problem - people keep falling for it. The poor suckers who do provide so much income to the crooks that it continues to be a lucrative business model.

  • How do I stop someone from hacking my iPhone?

    Hello all
This question concerns hacking of an iPhone and possible installation of a keystroke logger on my MacBook Air.
A month or so ago my iPhone 5c was hacked. Text messages were sent without any action on my part, apps on my iPhone were deleted and new ones were downloaded, mainly games. When I tried to stop them downloading, I got messages asking if I wanted to delete apps I had previously downloaded. The hackers had got my AppleID somehow, and had changed the language on the AppleID site to Korean!
It took me some time, but with the help of Apple Care I managed to restore the iPhone, or so I thought.
I was more recently the victim of a "spamming attack" on my MacBook Air where e-mails were sent from my computer by a spammer. I changed the password on my e-mail account. Since then on 3 occasions I have observed weird mouse behaviour when using Internet: twice it was impossible to move on a web page, I became stuck at the bottom of a page and had to reboot; another time a video I was watching went into a kind of slow motion, starting and stopping again several times a second. So it seems like I have some sort of malware on my Mac. Perhaps I should mention I am running Parallels software on my MacBook Air.
Now I have the problem with my iPhone again; whenever I have the "Localisation service" option on, text messages are entered on my phone, although none have been sent yet.
When I went on the AppleID website yesterday, my birthdate had been changed, so apparently they have got my AppleID password again. I changed the password yesterday.
Could they get the password through iCloud? or a keystroke logger on my computer? I read here that a keystroke logger can be installed by a fake JavaScript (or Java) installation window, and I remember clicking on such a window a few months ago. That would explain the spamming attack too. If that is the case do I have to "wipe" the whole HD, or just reinstall the OS?
Thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds as if your Apple ID was hacked. Your iPhone would have to have been jailbroken in order to have been hacked. Most likely, the hackers would have also have had to have had physical access to your phone. To protect the phone itself, don't jailbreak it and put a password on it. It sounds as if you did the right thing getting the Apple ID sorted. Make sure you use a strong password from now on.
Regargind your computer, again, it sounds as if your email was hacked. Sending spam that appears to have come from your email address wouldn't even have needed that. You could have malware in your Windows partition, I supposed. It is unlikely, though not absolutely impossible that you have malware running under the Mac OS.
You probably want to look into two-factor authentication with your Apple ID. I'm not an expert on malware on computers (as I have a Mac and it's not really a major issue) but, I think that wiping the Parallels partition and reinstalling would get rid of any possible Windows issues.
    Best of luck.

  • My MacBook Pro Retina's Bluetooth chipset unknown/odd login message on the login screen states Login Window Authentication Login window Name edit text has keyboard focus. In addition, the login screen is not remembering me

I have been experiencing several issues with my MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012. My MBPR is scheduled to go into the depot. However, I am wondering if anyone may be able to shed light on a few issues as this is the third "official" time my MBPR is going back for service ("one depot" trip; "one authorized" dealer; several in-store visits).
My Bluetooth is stating that the Bluetooth Chipset is Unknown (0). I also have had Bluetooth Preferences mysteriously change on me. In addition, while Bluetooth is off there are two serial modems turning on. I have turned them off, but they continue to pop up.
In addition, when I log in, my MBPR is not remembering me and my login name is not appearing on the slate-gray screen. The name and password are blank and the following message appears in the lower left hand corner. "login window authentication login window Name edit text has keyboard focus."  As a side note, I am the only user. The login issue is a recent occurrence as we just totally wiped it again via a Command + R, and I don't believe I have an accessibility setting set to anything that would cause this, but wanted to check.
Should I be concerned here? Has anyone else had issues like this? I don't want to worry if I don't have to. I have had so many issues over the course of nine months. 5-6 wipes. Airport card replaced and I am about to pull my hair out if my MBPR doesn't come back worldly like clock work this time. I just can't send my days trying to get a $2300 product to work for me any longer. No idea what is wrong with it, but it is driving me insane. Cross your fingers for me and any guidance you have or thoughts would be welcomed. Thank you. EMM

There are a ton of other warnings. Before I go through this again, can someone tell me if this is normal (all of it -- above too); or if these are symptoms is a keystroke logger or hardware issues?
I ask because originally, when my computer went in for diagnostics (more than once), Apple stated the hardware was fine (other than Airport Card -- finally). However, if I've done 5-6 total wipes; created new users; do not have sharing set-up; have not played around in Terminal; and am up-to-date with versions -- and various issues KEEP COMING BACK -- I am left wondering if a keystroke logger would be possible here?!? I thought maybe a faulty logic board, but why would diagnostics be okay, then? Not trying to be hyperbole, just desperate.
Please help me rule keystroke logger out or at least, tell me so I know, so I can take appropriate action. If you think it could be the logic board with symptoms above, that would be a great too.
All I want to do is use the computer as intended, but I can't seem to get a real answer, so after nine months -- I am turning to the communities to see if anyone -- anyone at all -- can help. The last thing I can do is have the MBPR come back from the depot and the same thing occur. Any guidance or advice would be so gratefully appreciated.

  • Is Airport a substitute for software firewall?

I have a Windows PC behind my Airport network. Is my Airport's NAT (or the NAT of any router for that matter) a substitute for software firewall?
As I understand it, the only thing software firewalls do is block un-used ports, which Airport's NAT already does (since by default it doesn't forward any port except 80 and few other necessary ports to the IPs behind its NAT), and therefore there's no way for hackers to get to them. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
It'd also be nice to know what ports Airport permit traffics... and how it knows which IP to forward the traffic too (does it act kind of like a proxy?).
    Thanks

    Yi,
Below is an article that discusses hardware and software firewalls. I hope it helps. The original article can be found here.
    Firewall Debate: Hardware vs. Software
    By Ronald Pacchiano
    November 4, 2003
I'm about to get my first broadband connection, and I know I need to get a firewall. However, I've been getting some conflicting advice as to what type of firewall I need. Some people tell me I should get a hardware firewall, while others tell me a software firewall is preferred. What's the difference, and more importantly, which is better?
Good question. The truth is that in a typical home office environment, one type of firewall isn't necessarily better than the other. They are some differences, though, and they can be used together to give you an even greater degree of protection.
Hardware firewalls are important because they provide a strong degree of protection from most forms of attack coming from the outside world. Additionally, in most cases, they can be effective with little or no configuration, and they can protect every machine on a local network.
A hardware firewall in a typical broadband router employs a technique called packet filtering, which examines the header of a packet to determine its source and destination addresses. This information is compared to a set of predefined and/or user-created rules that determine whether the packet is to be forwarded or dropped. A more advanced technique called Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI), looks at additional characteristics such as a packet's actual origin (i.e. did it come from the Internet or from the local network) and whether incoming traffic is a response to existing outgoing connections, like a request for a Web page.
But most hardware residential firewalls have an Achilles' heel in that they typically treat any kind of traffic traveling from the local network out to the Internet as safe, which can sometimes be a problem.
Consider this scenario: What would happen if you received an e-mail message or visited a website that contained a concealed program? Let's say this program was designed to install itself on your machine and then surreptitiously communicate with someone via the Internet — a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack zombie or a keystroke logger, for example? And trust me, this is by no means an unlikely scenario.
To most broadband hardware firewalls, the traffic generated by such programs would appear legitimate since it originated inside your network and would most likely be let through. This malevolent traffic might be blocked if the hardware firewall was configured to block outgoing traffic on the specific Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) port(s) the program was using, but given that there are over 65,000 possible ports and there's no way to know which ports a program of this nature might use, the odds of the right ones being blocked are slim.
Moreover, blocking too many ports would almost certainly adversely affect your ability to use some programs (many games, for instance). Also, some broadband router firewalls don't even provide the ability to restrict outgoing traffic, only incoming traffic.
    Advantages of Software Firewalls
Now consider what a software firewall might do in the aforementioned scenario. When you first set up a software firewall, you can specify which applications are allowed to communicate over the Internet from that PC. Programs that aren't explicitly allowed to do so are either blocked or else the user is prompted for confirmation before the traffic is allowed to pass. Therefore, it would likely intercept this kind of traffic before it left your computer.
Another potential scenario where a software firewall would be useful is in the case of an e-mail worm with its own e-mail sever, like the recent "SoBig" worm. Its built-in mail server could attempt to send mail on the valid Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port (25), which would probably pass through the router because of its trusted origin.
On the other hand, a software firewall could be configured to only allow Microsoft Outlook to use port 25 (assuming Outlook is your e-mail client). Any attempt by another application to use the port would be dropped, or blocked pending user confirmation. For that matter, the application's attempt to use any port would be blocked if the firewall was configured that way.
By comparison, a hardware firewall that had the ability to filter outgoing traffic might allow you to block most kinds of traffic from a particular PC, but it wouldn't be able to flag you and alert you to repeated attempts to infiltrate your computer.
One obvious downside to software firewalls is that they can only protect the machine they're installed on, so if you have multiple computers (which many small offices do), you need to buy, install, and configure a software firewall separately on each machine. This can get expensive and can be difficult to manage if you have a lot of computers.
But the fact of the matter is that software firewalls generally offer the best measure of protection against certain types of situations like Trojan programs or e-mail worms. Speaking of which, a firewall isn't the only protection method available to you. Whether you end up using a software firewall or a hardware firewall, you should always supplement it with anti-virus software.
A good anti-virus package is just as important as a firewall, and I would seriously suggest that you invest in a good one (I'm partial to both Norton and McAfee myself). However, keeping your virus definitions updated is far more important than which program you use. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. Making sure your definitions are current is absolutely critical to maintaining your protection. Many Anti-virus programs today can be configured to automatically update themselves, so you have no excuse for not maintaining them.
The bottom line is that with any home-office broadband connection, a hardware firewall should be considered a bare minimum, and supplementing it with a software firewall on one or more computers (and don't forget anti-virus software) is almost always a good idea.

  • Just moved to ISP PLUSNET and now loading web pages is dead slow

Just moved to ISP PLUSNET and now loading web pages is dead slow.
Like loading google will sometimes take 30 seconds to 1 minute but it used to load in a fraction of a second on my previous ISP.
Sometimes a new URL will take over a minute so I hit Stop Loading This Page and then try again and sometimes it might load instantly, or if not, it might continue to just drag on again.
It's so frustrating it's like being back on dial-up connection - but worse.
It feels like PLUSNET have put something on my Mac to slow it down.
PLUSNET has a restriction on how much I can use per month, which my previous ISP did not have, but according to PLUSNET's usage checker I am nowhere near the max, ie, I am allowed 10GB per month but the checker is showing I have used less than 100 MB so far this month.
I wonder if the PLUSNET usage checker is slowing down my usage coz it's really noticeable that it has only started to run slow since I moved to PLUSNET.
When I run a broadband speed check it always shows the feed coming in at around 5500 kbps or so which should be OK.
PLUSNET told me to go through their test page and I got to the part where it says install a Virus checker and an Adware checker but I'm not sure which ones to use coz I heard some of those checkers are themselves plants that infect you with a virus or keystroke logger.
Also I have Block Pop UP Windows running on Safari but yesterday a window popped up so that blocker seems to have been compromised somehow.
I have 17GB available on my HD of a total of 38GB.
Can anyone help me with this problem please?

(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl. If you are running Snow Leopard, run Safari in 32 bit not 64 bit.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
    More useful information here:
    http://guides.macrumors.com/SpeedupSafari
Less likely, but possible, is that the slowness is caused by a Trojan such as the one called 'DNSChanger' or 'OSZ.RSPlug', which can alter the DNS settings of your network connection. This particular Trojan can be inadvertently installed if you have come across certain Quicktime movies where got a window stating that you have to download and install a particular codec in order to see the video.
If you have agreed to that installation, your system can be infected and your DNS settings altered, which results in your system using the wrong DNS servers, which can slow web surfing to a crawl.
This can be fixed by downloading and running a freeware utility called DNSChanger Removal Tool which you can download from here:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33696
Once you have run that utility you have to re-boot your Mac, then reset Safari, and re-enter your DNS settings in System Preferences/Network.

AHHHHHH, I see. It is a monitoring/keystroke logger application that my dad has installed on all of our macs. It is not so much for me as it is for the younger ones, but I do not have the password to that and cannot do anything about it.
~Bee, I believe you have helped me before with a similar issue pertaining to MY MacBook Pro. Something to do with Saft and Cosmopod. I refered to that same thread and it has made safari stop crashing, but I am unable to view or download safari extensions. This is the previous thread that you helped me on (different user - my personal apple account)

  • Installing/updating software always generates error message

Every time I update or install software I receive the error message "software failed to install." As soon as I click the message to close it, another message pops up telling me that the software did install. This has been going on for several months and is consistent. I don't notice any other problem with my computer, but I find it quite disconcerting. It makes me wonder if I have something like a keystroke logger running in the background, but I am not savvy enough to know how to determine whether this is the case.
Should I be worried about this?

    For a start try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Format and Clean install

I have a virus which I suspect is a keystroke logger. I cannot isolate it and want to do a complete wipe and format and re-install XP professional. (Since the unit was new I have always had occasional freeze-ups, etc.,  which I would also hope to correct with the latest version of software.)  Unfortunately when I purchased my A31 new from IBM, no Windows XP discs were provided. Now the Lenovo web site says that only questions and inquiries are accepted from users who are under warranty. Is there no other solution than to go out and buy a new XP Professional (or Vista?) software package?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Welcome to the forum!
Does your A31 still have the orginal recovery partition intact? If so, you can do a clean restore from there.
What COA do you have on your machine? It is perfectly legit to get a burned copy of the original IBM disks for the OS that your machine has the COA for.
    Let us know.
    Cheers,
    George

  • A total operations story

Hello, is there in OS X Tiger a way to register a story of everything I do (run applications, copy, move and delete files and other objects, install applications, etc...) with date, time and a small description of the operations?
I'm thinking about something like the Photoshop story register.
If not, is there a freeware utility somewhere?
    Thanks.

    Hi, drywood.
The closest thing that comes to mind is to use a keystroke logger, such as Spector for Mac OS or TypeAgent. Spector offers features beyond keystroke logging, but is more expensive.
You can investigate other possible solutions by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.
    Good luck!
