Keyword behavior -- flaw or feature?

The hierarchical keywords in Aperture are nice. There are some behaviors that I have noted and I wonder if this is by design (intellegent) or an oversight.
First: In the Filter or Smart Album HUD you can select items by keyword. If you have nested keywords then the hierarchy will appear in parentheses, for example Dog(Mammal). I have noticed that this only works if your nesting hierarchy is two levels deep. Once you nest deeper than that the parentheses disappear and you see just the subordinate keyword--in this case "Dog". I am guessing this is by design? A long chain of nested keywords might mess up the presentation.
Second: When a keyword is first applied to an image then made a subordinate keyword by moving the keyword in the HUD the higher level keywords don't get assigned to the image. Example I apply the keyword "Dog" to an image then move the "Dog" keyword to become subordinate to "Mammal". The keyword "Mammal" is not applied to my image. If I reapply the keyword "Dog" after it is a subordinate keyword then all the parent keywords are applied to the image at the same time and I can search on those by using the "Find text in image" entry fields.

Odd, as I seem to see at least teh direct parent keyword even if that keyword is three levels deep.

I think that is more by design, think of that Keyword HUD as not a link to keywords in your images but a place to store master keys until they are used - so changing structure of keywords has no effect on any exiting images until you re-apply keywords.
The reason I think this is by design is it removes the ability to make vast mistakes very quickly, instead you have to go through an extra stage or two. I think they are afraid some people might change the leywords all around (or remove them to clear the list) not realizing they might be altering how a lot of images are tagged.

I think I use too many blogging / bookmarking tools. I wish there were a behavior like del.icio.us / ma.gnolia.com where the keywords were user-defined on the fly and auto-completed. For example, in a text box I could type "out" and it would suggest "outdoors" from my previously-used keywords. Also, I could type "ferrari" and it would not find that as a previously used keyword, and add it to the pool of keywords automatically when I save.
I want to be able to enter keywords as a stream of consciousness function. As it is now, I spend a ludicrous amount of time searching for the keyword I want in the keyword controls (not to mention switching categories). That little "Add Keyword" box does not function anything like I would expect it to, and it's breaking my heart. The search in the keywords HUD is helpful, but it still requires me to take my hands away from the keyboard, grab the stupid mouse, and drag the keyword to the photo.
Please, please, please can I get a smart textbox for keywords?!

Yes, yes you can. I'm using Aperture 2, but I believe you could do the same in Aperture 1.5. First, turn on the "Control bar" ad then turn on the "Keyword Controls" through the "Window" menu. There is a selection of 8 keyword buttons that are also assigned to hotkeys. Then there is a menu, and finally, (in the upper right in Ap 2) a text box. In that text box you can type the start of a keyword, and Aperture will suggest all keywords which match from a drop-down style menu. If your keywords are not locked, you can also enter new keywords using the same text box.
The unfortunate thing about that text box is that it takes focus away from the browser, and you cannot then navigate with the arrow keys until you click on your photo again.

New paste/import path behavior, bug or feature?

My workflow has been either copy and pasting paths from Illustrator to solids in After Effects, or converting vector layers in After Effects to shape layers. Now it seems something has changed in CC and CC 2014 and I'm getting something that looks like the paths were expanded.. so I can't use the stroke effect to do the old "draw the lines on" animation.
Also, it seems inconsistent, like it worked as usual on the first path I brought in, but for the rest of this project, it's been a problem.
Anyone know anything about this?

Feature request: better keyword management tool

I'm re-organizing my keywords and I think that LR needs some work in keyword management and DAM features.
I miss something like separate keyword management tool which would have two keyword lists, which would work a bit like spatial file management in Os X finder.
Easily manage keyword hierarchy. For example: browse list and and be able to easily select keywords (now it's OK) and drag and drop them to under a new keyword (almost ok, but sometimes cumbersome, if one wants to move keyword which is/are at the bottom of the long keyword list to keyword which is at the top of the list).

Dang near impossible once you have a lot of keywords. A work-around for me has been to filter keywords first to reduce the number of keywords in the list, then do the drag 'n drop. At a minimum, a change to scroll the list when you're searching for a drop target at a variable rate that depends on mouse position, or even something simple like slowing it down when the alt key is pressed.
+1 vote - better keyword management.
Something else that may help you in the mean time: KeywordConsolidator.

Keywords imported but don't show up with photos

I am not getting keywords to show up with imported photos. i've done a lot of searching on this and other forums to try to figure out what is different about my situation but to no avail. here's what I've deduced though:
the keywords will import if I deselect “Copy the items to the iPhoto Library”. But if I leave the default box checked", I will not get keywords associated with the photos.
(the rest of my discussion deals with a library where the imported photos ARE copied to the library)
Interestingly, the keywords ARE imported into iPhoto (if one looks at the keyword list); they just aren't attached to the photos (i.e. clicking <Get Info> shows no keywords, as opposed to them being there but just not showing up on the screen with the image). Most (but not all) of my imported photos show up in iPhoto without any keywords attached. Most Events are all-or-nothing; i.e. all the photos of the event either have keywords or don’t. At least one Event is a mix. I cannot make any sense as to why some do, as the ones that do will be part of an event that all the other photo's don't show the keywords; additionally, neither the ones with nor the ones without keywords share any common feature or change (e.g. edited, rotated, file type, keyword/tag name, etc.).
I'm a pretty basic user when it comes to photos (but with a fair amount of common sense and computer knowledge); not trying to do anything fancy here. I don't know much about photography, so I'm not manipulating photo settings on my camera and am not (purposefully/knowingly) manipulating the metadata directly from the file. So, I'm baffled as to why my system would be acting differently than any other "out of the box" iMac.
In case it matters:
-- the photos being imported originated from a Windows-based PC and tagged by Adobe Photoshop Elements. I have the same problem regardless of whether I export them (using Photoshop) to a file on the iMac or directly import them over the network from the PC using iPhoto.
-- (Using iPhoto Library Manager) I created another iPhoto library to see if the same thing would happen with photos imported to a different library -- same problem. (BTW, I checked the new library's Keywords BEFORE I imported to make sure the keyword "library" wasn't somehow replicated from the previous library.)
-- In one of your forum discussions, you said that these “copies” would be in the “Originals” folder within the iPhoto package, right? If so, then they are the same size as the files being imported minus a few KBs, presumably due to the lack of associated keywords.
I assume that these "copied" files are suppose to retain their keyword/tag info. Any ideas why they aren't and/or what I can do about it? I tried rebuilding the database too but that didn't do any good. I'm figuring on trying to reimport everything again, but I fear I'll get the same result.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First try the simple fix: delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Launch iPhoto and see if the keywords show up. If not, then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

Lightroom Keeps Losing My Keywords

I use Lightroom 1.2 and CS3. This is my workflow:
1) I import my images from a CF cards to a directory on hard drive.
2) Open Bridge to sort and white balance my images.
3) Open Lightroom to assign keywords to all the images. The keywords are the one feature that I REALLY like about Lightroom.
4) Sometime later (another day) I go back into Bridge/CS3 and do some editting with ACR.
5) When I go to Lightroom, it detects that metadata has changed. The images have that rectangular icon.
6) When I click on the icon I get this dialog:
"The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and
another application. How should Lightroom synchronize this data?"
with the following three options:
Import Settings from Disk
Cancel
Overwrite Settings
So if I choose to import the settings from disk (to pick up the Bridge/CS2 edits), Lightroom removes the keywords that I have previously assigned.
Now that is REALLY DUMB. So are we talking metadata or keywords. They are kept separate in the panels and should be kept separate during this process.
I don't know if this is related to the XMP Performance Issue or not. If I uncheck auto-write XMP Lightroom flies and gives this message.
If I check the auto-write option (isn't this supposed to fix this?), my machine grinds almost to a halt. It is so slow that I don't know whether this dialog even appears. I don't even see the icon.
Just to make matters worse, I don't know how many images have no keywords assigned. Now that would be a really great feature for the keyword search.
My computer is a dual processor PowerMac G5 with 3.5Gb RAM with 127Gb free space on the catalog's disk and 11,000 images.

The problem in your workflow is that second step of editing the previously edited images that were keyworded back in Camera Raw...why would you do that? Lightroom has all the controls that Camera Raw has (except a point curve editor). At some point you'll really need to decide where you're going to do you main editing and stick with it. Either that or you're gonna go nutz trying to keep the metadata correctly updated and yes, ALL the metadata gets updated when you see that warning and go ahead and update...it's doing exactly what you told it to do...in spite of the fact that's not what you really want as there is no way to separate settings from keywords or other metadata.

Unusably slow initialization, keyword filtering

I primarily use iphoto as my video source, as I shoot a lot of video with my panasonic point and shoot camera (it does hd video, and very good vga).
imovie 11, literally takes 5 minutes to start. I have a macbook pro, 2.8ghz, previous model, with the nice fast graphics card..
this is crazy! I can understand thumbnail generation taking 5 minutes, but this is 5 minutes:
EVERY time I start iMovie,
EVERY time I filter keywords, rendering the people feature utterly useless, as going from a people filter, to the whole library is 5 minutes..
Isn't it about time apple improved the iphoto video integration? How about having ranges of video by date, instead of the entire iphoto library? Many of us have way over 100gb iphoto libraries now, and many of us have a vast amount of video in iphoto.
I truly hope the apple engineers consider this common use case and come up with an update to fix this problem. iMovie is pretty much dead for me now since iLife11 upgrade

Do you have a lot of Movie files in iPhoto? If so I would get them out of there for now. I am not sure why but it slows down iMovie a LOT if you have tons in there. I have not had the issues you speak of at all with keywording. Have you deleted your plist and caches?
I am not super familiar with iPhoto but I have smartlist built in to Aperture that has all the photos separated out by date which iMovie recognizes.
iPhoto came out with an upgrade last night. Have you loaded it?

Keywords only sometimes come over into iPhoto?

I'm running Aperture on a Macbook Pro. I import my photos from camera, rate them, keyword them, and create versions of the best. Then, I go to iPhoto and import versions that are potentially printable or at least worthy of flickr upload. I use the 'Show Aperture Library' option and drag the photos I want into iPhoto.
I'm totally confused by the keyword behavior though. It seems to randomly decide that some photos don't deserve to have their keywords imported. I took a series of photos today and had 5 to import into iPhoto. All had basically the same set of keywords and were imported and edited using the same basic work flow. The keywords came through fine on all but one image. I trashed it and re-imported it over and over again. I trashed the Aperture version and re-created it and then re-imported it. Still no keyword. I'm befuddled.

Macbook Pro and Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8) Win XP dual boot

The keywords for all my photos are embedded in the IPTC:keywords field using Adobe Bridge (which also embeds the keywords in the XMP-dc:subject and XMP-lr:hierarchicalsubject fields as well). This has been my modus operandi through several versions of iLife now with no problems until now.
I again just tried importing a photo both ways (copying and not copying to library), and the photo that was not copied to the iPhoto library does not display the keywords, but the copied photo does. I did this experiment with a fresh, clean iPhoto '09 library, so I know it can't be corruption from an updated '08 library.
What’s odd is that all other metadat imports, for example, the GPS metadata. iPhoto had no problem parsing those fields, or any of the camera data fields. In light of that, I’m fairly certain that this isn’t any sort of permissions issue either on the photo itself or the volume it’s stored on; plus, I’m pretty finicky about my metadata (using a combination of exiftool, Google Earth, GeoTagger, and Bridge), so I’m pretty sure my metadata is in order and not corrupt.
Did you guys really have no problem when you duplicated this issue? Hmm... odd. Any suggestions?

Missing Waveform Monitors - New Install, Most Recent Premiere CC 2014

Hi,
I recently downloaded and installed Premiere Pro CC and related apps with a cloud subscription on a new Mac Pro tower. I connected by working RAIDs and opened a PPro project originated on my previous edit system, an iMac. Right away I noticed some strange behavior and key features missing when I went to color correct my footage.
With the desired timeline active in the "Editing" workspace, I used the keyboard shortcut (I also tried this with the dropdown menu) and switched the workspace to color correction. Rather than the timeline activated in the "editing" workspace, a completely different timeline in the project appeared in the "color correction" space. This occurred multiple times with seemingly every timeline, but the one I desired to correct activating in the "color correction" space.
Also, the waveform monitors are absent from both the reference and program viewer menus. I can't seem to the find them anywhere. This leaves me feeling a bit crazy, as I was operating in the most current PPro CC version on the iMac just yesterday and everything was in its place.
Thoughts on what is going on here?

Thank you for all of the feedback. I have tried un-installing and re-installing twice now. Once using the cleaner tool and once without. Neither has remedied the problem. I was sure to check "Remove Preferences" when performing the un-install, but when I opened a new project after the re-installation, PPro opened in the "Color Correction" workspace rather than opening in the standard editing workspace and still no scopes.
Other ideas?
I found this thread, which isn't boosting my confidence in a healthy Premiere / Mac Pro relationship, but I have seen no mention of the missing scopes issue I am experiencing. And really I haven't progressed to the point of attempting an export or render. As you well know, scopes are vital, and there's no point exporting if I can't properly polish a product.

Now heres the things i have already tried.
1)Reinstalling After Effects repeatedly.

6)changed by screen resolution.
7)closed down anti-virus programs
8)Tried various ways of importing files, like drag and drop
9)tried importing different files.
10)Restarting my computer after attempting the all above^
I have also been to the general specialist website already thank you very much.
Edit: Now i have also tried uninstalling quick time and all of the video codec packs on my computer, this also didn't help (i did remember to restart afterwards)
Edit: Also, i started a new thread because nothing in any of the other threads on this same or similar errors was at all helpful to me.
edit3: i might also add that i have after effects 6.5 and it works just fine, though its much older.

Yes ebay has changed the site, Safari 2.0.4 is not fully supported
Firefox is your best bet, if you are going to use the site.
They had recently been downgrade 1.3.2 now they tout Firefox,it must be able to handle that very poor code.

How to make backward compatibility of windows phone 8.1 app for windows phone 7?

I developed windows phone 8.1 app which is in windows phone store. Now, i want to make this app compatible for windows 7 also. Is it possible, if yes then how?

It may be that you are using non-backward compatible capabilities in your Windows Phone 8.1 app(s).
Developers that want to develop for different OS's usually have platforms with the different OS's on them for developing applications so they work on each platform.
I suppose you developed for Windows phone 8.1 rather than Windows phone 7. Therefore your app runs on a different framework than a Windows phone 7 has as well as probably newer hardware with greater capabilities.
So you will probably need to purchase an older phone that came with Windows phone 7 in order to develop for. I couldn't find documentation like the last link below (App capabilities and hardware requirements for Windows Phone 8) for Windows phone 7
from Microsoft but maybe you can.

Editing icloud pages document on desktop, edits not showing up on icloud

I have a pages document on my icloud called "ABC123"
I am on my mac
I go to FINDER > iCLOUD > PAGES FOLDER
in the pages folder I see the document "ABC123"
I click ABC123
It opens in pages on my desktop (not in browser)
I make an edit and type: "***?"
I click save.
When I open ABC123 in the browser-version of pages, my "***?" edit is not there.
Why are my edits not syncing with the icloud version even though I opened it through my icloud folder? Everything is updated (software and pages and icloud acct).... can we just not use the desktop version to edit icloud documents?
In other words:
I ask because I'd like to collaborate with others, but I would like to use my desktop version. They can use the browser to edit. but.... my desktop edits aren't saving to the collaborative online version of ABC123

Yes, Pages and iCloud Drive can be used in the way you're describing. It sounds like you're seeing some unexpected behavior with this feature.
For troubleshooting, start with the tips in the "Documents on iCloud.com are not updated when changes are made on my iOS device or Mac" section of this article:

You may also want to close and re-open Pages and Safari, and test again.

I can't find my lost bookmarks or add new ones

I can't find my lost bookmarks having upgraded to Firefox 3.6 and when I try to add a bookmark I get a message that the server is busy. I have tried all the options under help.

AFAIK, Firefox doesn't need to contact a server for anything related to bookmarks, unless you have an addon that modifies standard Firefox behavior or adds features to Firefox.
I see by your UserAgent that you have the Google Toolbar extension installed, are you using the Google Bookmarks feature?
Maybe that is your problem, Google bookmarks attempting to "call home"?
What else do you have installed that might be causing that problem?
Open up Help > Troubleshooting Information and hit the '''Copy all to clipboard''', then paste that information into the '''''Post a Reply''''' box in this thread.
That will give us a listing of all you installed addons.

Positioning anchored graphic outside of table

I have a single-cell table with a small graphic that is anchored so that it is positioned to the left of the table and is particially in the margin area. The reason that the graphic can't be in a table cell is because it has to jut into the margin, past the text frame.
The table is inserted periodically throughout several documents. The lines of text in the table can vary -- sometimes it will have 1, 2, 3 lines of text in the cell.
I need to have the anchored graphic centered vertically to the left of the text in the cell -- the "y" distance for the anchored graphic varies according to the number of lines in the table cell. Is there a way to automatically center the graphic so that it doesn't need to be manually positioned for each table?

Make that frame the height of your cell and center its contents vertically. .. Oh wait, your row heights may be different, so you still have to resize the anchored frame. Anchor the frame into a cell that has its own contents vertically centered?
Perhaps there is an easier way. Re-reading from the top, you state "The reason that the graphic can't be in a table cell is because it has to jut into the margin, past the text frame." Well, a table can jut out into the margin at the right, if it is wider than the text frame -- a flaw/oversight/"feature" that has been put to good use for creating straddling headlines over two columns.
Let me put this question to you: what happens if you (a) insert a new column to the left of your table to put the graphic in, thus making the table too wide, and then (b) **Sanity Warning! Untested Claim Follows** set the paragraph of the table to right alignment?
