Keyword HUD Slow Slow Slow

Three days into Aperture so far, and so good. Very intuitive and easy to use. The import list function in the Keyword HUD is a huge timesaver.
However, when I imported a list of North American birds, the HUD takes forever (well, 13 seconds, anyway) to toggle it open. What, if anything, can be done to speed it up (besides adding more memory)?
Thanks for the help!

It's easy to add your own keywords to the keyboard shortcuts, if that's what you want to do.
Otherwise there are a couple areas you can type them and have them automatically added. Or you can do batch change to add them to a group of photos. This also works with autocomplete.
But you'd probably need to read 3 pages of the manual :-P

  • Keyword hud questions

    Hi there everyone,
I have a couple of questions regarding the keyword hud:
Somehow my "stock categories" entry has moved as a sub-entry for another keyword. I have tried to just drag it out back to its rightful spot but it only seems to want to become a sub-entry for the keywords around it and not become its own main keyword again. How do I put it back in place?
Is it possible to create multiple customised keyword huds for each Project. My main keyword hud already seems to becoming unmanagable with so many words and categories and it is slowing down my work flow having to scroll through the long list and keep opening sub key words etc.
When I first started using the keywords feature I thought it was great and very easy and fast, but the more words I add the more ungainly it becomes.
There are many different keywords that I do not need for specific projects so slimming down the keywords available for each project would speed up my workflow dramatically I think.
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Justin

Had a similar issue & It took me a while to figure this one out - but it's quite simple really!
To put the Stock category back to the root level simply drag it onto an empty area at the bottom of the list - ie so no other category is highlighted - and then release the mouse button. The category should then move back. If it doesn't, or goes into another sub-cat, then you'd still got a category highlighted somewhere.
You can't create customised Keyword HUDs, but you can use the Keyword Presets in the control bar (Press Shift-D to hide/unhide them, press D to Hide/Unhide the control bar itself). You can create different sets of keywords and then use the alt-1 through alt-0 to add then. Check the manual for a bit more detail (Chptr 10, pg213).

  • Can't drag keywords to top level in the keyword HUD

After having imported my iPhoto library into Aperture 3, I found the keyword HUD cluttered with all of my 300+ keywords, many of which were duplicated. No idea why that is, but anyway. Some of them now live on top level, some on second floor under the main keyword "iPhoto", some of them are duplicates, some are not. That's the situation.
So I want to (a) drag some of them to first level, (b) build my own hierarchy, and (c) consolidate those duplicates that are alloted on separate levels. Now I find myself in trouble. Technically, I can drag any second level keyword from one to another first level keyword, but then they remain always on second floor. I find no way to move it to *first level* in the HUD.
I know that this can be done when the keyword HUD is almost empty. In that case, I drag it to the bottom of the list, see a white border pop up around the HUD, and let go. Simple. But not when the HUDs filled up to the brim?
    Am I missing something?

OK ... but you're gonna groan. This is, btw, a long-standing bug (but still an excellent question).
Use the search field to search for the keyword you want to move.
Take advantage of the now empty space in the Keyword HUD to move the keyword.
    Clear the search field.
Note that if you set up a well-organized hierarchical keyword list (which seems to be your goal), you can use the other work-around, which is to collapse all levels of the outline.
You might find these remarks on merging duplicates helpful:

  • Keyword used per Keyword HUD, but not on any image per filtered search?

On the keyword HUD I try to delete a keyword and get the warning that the keyword is used by two versions, so I don't delete it.
I then go to a smart album showing all library photos and attempt to search for images having that keyword and nothing else (also don't have 'stack picks only' checked). This finds nothing!
How can this be? I even searched the trash and nothing there either that matches the keyword that supposedly exists on two versions.
    Regards, Strathglass

    Guys,
Before you chalk it up as a bug, check your keyword HUD for the same keyword appearing in different parts of your keyword hierarchy.
I had a situation occur where I exported some keyworded raws as jpegs to create a pano. When I reimported the resulting pano done in PSE 6, the keywords came back across into Aperture, but at the top level of the keyword hierarchy. For example:
    (1) Aperture keyword was animals/reptiles/snakes/Venomous
    (2) On re-import, I ended up with keywords of animals, reptiles, snakes, and venomous in the top level of the keyword structure.
Result = same keyword but in different locations in the hierachy. Confusion!
This also happens when you import photos that were keyworded in an external app, but I'm not sure of the extent of the occurrence.

  • Aperture 3 - keywords HUD multiple copies of all keywords???

    Hi
On my macbook pro somehow I have managed to get 3 copies of all my keywords in the keyword HUD.
Is there anyway of resetting the file back to default?
I've tried deleting the .plist files keywords.plist and keywordsets.plist but when I reopen Aperture the HUD file is still the same?
    Thanks
    Catherine

Can you not highlight all the duplicates and click the delete button.
Hold down the Apple key select the duplicates and click the delete button.

  • Keywords Deleted From Keyword HUD Randomly Reappear

I hope I'm just doing something wrong, and if so, that someone can point me in the right direction because this is driving me nuts.
I am trimming down the keywords available in the Keyword HUD so that only the ones that I use are listed.  I am deleting them from the "Stock categories" section and adding a few new ones that I need.  The problem is that some of the keywords that I remove mysteriously reappear in the list again.  Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello, Kirby.
Yes, this is in fact what I'd discovered to be the issue ... every time I opened the Keyword control bar, it would repoplulate the HUD with previously deleted keywords.  I had been under the impression that the HUD was the do-all end-all location for managing keywords.
I have since done exactly what you've suggested and simply nuked the existing button sets and created my own, and then cleaned out the existing, unneeded keywords and have started creating my own to assign to the button sets.
I do get some odd behavior still; Sometimes when I open the keyword command bar, the three buttons sets that I have (Shoe Box I, Shoe Box II, and Shoe Box Comics) do not show up, but instead there are three non-existent sets named after long-deleted sets and they contain no keywords.  To fix it, I have to go into the editing mode for button sets, and then exit back out.  Small things.
Thanks again for the prompt and accurate resolution to the problem!

  • Keyword HUD/Hierarchy

I have one big request for Aperture... In the Query HUD the keywords need to be displayed within a hierachical list just like they are in the keywords HUD, but with check boxes next to each keyword.
It does absolutely no good to have hierachical keywords if you can make selections based on each level of the hierarchy.
For example, within the Query HUD I would like to be able to narrow images down by location, so I would start with USA to see everything in the US, then I could select Colorado, to narrow down to state, then I could select Denver to narrow down to city, and even an address or landmark beyond that if I chose. But as is the only keyword I can select in the query HUD is the most specific, which as I said, completely defeats the point of having a hierarchical key word structure.
This would be a really simple fix, so I'm crossing my fingers for a 1.5.1 release.

I'm not sure if this is a 1.5.1 thing only or not, but you CAN select keywords at any level of the keyword hierarchy and they WILL filter as you expect them to. The only trick is getting the keywords to appear in the filter dialog to make this happen.
The missing piece is that you need to have at least one image in the project that is tagged with each higher level keyword you want to be able to filter on.

  • Keyword HUD Draging

I am unable to drag keywords from the Keyword HUD either to viewer or browser images or even within the Keyword HUD (change hierarchy). I have tried the S key. no luck. I have just downloaded a trial version 1.5.2. I have read the PDF Manual and watched the web video instruction. I am sure I am doing something wrong but I don't know what. I can delete and add keywords in the HUD but that's about it. I can use the batch feature to add keywords but i would rather drag them. Any ideas?

  • Keyword HUD has disappeared

Whilst using App 3 the Keyword HUD seems to have disappeared. The Window dropdown toggles between show and hide the HUD but is not visable. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Have you rebooted?  The HUD is likely lost on another "space" or otherwise off the screen.  Rebooting should bring back any lost windows.
Just the first thing to check.  Post back.

  • Keyword HUD do not coincide with Keyword filter

How many times a keyword is used is shown in keyword HUD, but sometimes it does´nt coicide with the real number of files I have tagged. When using the Keyword filter the number of files is different to the real number of tagged files.

  • Keyword HUD gone

I've just installed Aperture and installed my entire iphoto library - but after having applied about a hundred keywords or so from the Keywords HUD, the HUD has just vanished. First it froze, then I restarted Aperture, and now I can't find it anywhere, no matter what I do and even though I can both hide and show it from the menu. Help?

Well, well well, it's all been resolved, stupid me...

  • Matching projects to keyword HUD?

I've painstakingly created a hierarchy in the keyword HUD. Example:
    Nature
         Flora
              Trees
              Flowers
                   Mums
                   Tulips
         Fauna
              Animals
                  Dogs
                   Cats
                   Deer
         Insects
Birds and so on.  Now, I'd like to arrange my pics in projects, folders, smart albums whatever to match the keyword HUD. In the example that I've given, would this work?: Project is Nature, folders in that project are Flora and Fauna, Subfolders in Fauna are Animals, Insects, Birds?  If this doesn't make sense, how might I use Smart Albums to organize pictures within Projects and Folders? I feel so dense--ugh.
    thanks, Mike

    Mike,
I'd leave the projects as they are, grouped by locations, events, shoots, as you took them, but group the smart albums according to your keyword hierarchy.
I'd create a folder "Nature", inside two folders "Flora" and "Fauna".
Create nested folders for all your your subcategories, and inside these folders smart albums for the corresponding keyword. Set the source of the smart rule to "Library" for the smart album.

  • Removing prev added keywords from main Query HUD

Can anybody help with this ....
I've been keywording a back-catalogue in Aperture over the last 2-3 days, mostly with a dedicated keywords I've prepared in the Keyword HUD, but also some misc ones. I can see that every keyword I've used to-date is logged in the Keyword section of the main library Query HUD, and it's packed with them.
Does anybody know how I can selectively remove applied keywords from the Query HUD list (not the Keyword HUD)?
    (Hope that makes sense!!)

I see this as a bug and I've reported it as such.
If you start a Query HUD from a folder or project and then look at the keywords, it only shows keywords that exist among pictures within that folder or project.
If you start a Query HUD from "Library", however, it shows every single keyword ever entered, even if you are no longer using the keyword. This clutters up the HUD big time.

  • Deleting keywords in filter HUD

I have many keywords in my aperture filter HUD that I want to delete -- like typos and keywords I no longer use. I know how to delete them from the keyword HUD, but I can't figure out how to delete them from the filter HUD that pops up when I try to create a smart album. Can anyone tell me how to delete keywords from the filter HUD? Also I have duplicate keywords from importing from iphoto, so the filter HUD will list as separate keywords: soccer (iPhoto) and soccer. I would like to have just one keyword for soccer.
    Thanks for the help.

Thanks, but my Mac doesn't have a backspace key and delete doesn't work. Is there something else I should be pressing?
William was referring to the Keyword HUD (and on my MBP, "{fn}+{delete}" equals backspace). There is a "Delete Keyword" button in the tool-strip located in the bottom border of the Keyword HUD.
Kirby, I understand that your suggestion will help me get the right keywords in the right places, but how can I delete keywords in the filter hub?
This is not how Aperture works. Use the Keywords HUD to manage Keywords. The Filter HUD dynamically shows Keywords. You cannot add, delete, move, or in any way administer Keywords from the Filter HUD.
Even if there are no photos to which that keyword is assigned it still appears in the filter HUD -- I have used smart albums to find all photos assigned to a keyword and deleted the keyword from each one so there are no photos that have that keyword, but it still appears in the filter HUD.
    1. Make sure you aren't filtering your view in any other way. Be sure to flush your entire trashway (rejected, Aperture Trash, system Trash).
    2. Sometimes Aperture takes several moments to catch up on changes. You can force a re-filter by selecting another Keyword, then re-selecting the one you want. I don't know if this forces a refresh of the Keywords in the Filter HUD. You might have to make another selection in the Library tab of the Inspector, then return to your previous selection and re-pop-up the Filter HUD.
    3. If you want to remove all instances of a Keyword, delete it from the Keyword HUD. There is no reason to hunt it down and remove it from every Version to which it is applied.
    4. Regularly, and especially if you migrated photos from iPhoto, you will end up with two Keywords with the same name (they are located at different levels of the Keyword hierarchy. Use the Keyword HUD to merge them (by dragging and dropping). "Dog", "Animals>Dog", and "Animals>Domesticated>Four-legged>Household>Dog" are each distinct Keywords to Aperture.

  • Some Adventures With Keywords

I like many features of the Keyword system supplied with Aperture very much. But there are a few things which have been a little frustrating.
    * The way the autocompletion feature works in the "Add Keyword" field in the Control Bar makes it too easy to misenter a keyword. You type your keyword, hit "Enter", and--oops--you've entered something you didn't mean to enter.
    * Keywords entered in the HUD sometimes capitalize themselves when you don't want this. I haven't been able to determine why this happens, but I can't really understand why I would ever want the program to capitalize a word I didn't capitalize myself. Sometimes this is really frustrating--if I already have a keyword in the HUD, like "lake", and try to enter a phrase like "Kabetogama Lake" in the Control Bar field, Aperture simply won't let me make the "l" in lake uppercase no matter what I try.
    * When you apply a keyword via the Control Bar field, if it doesn't exist in the Keyword HUD Aperture automatically it. Many times I do not want this, and there ought to be a preference to allow turning this off.
    * The "keyword checkbox" interface of the Search HUD does not scale very well. As long as the pictures selected only contain a dozen or two unique keywords, this is fine, but when there are many all of the checkboxes and keywords overwhelm the HUD. Also, the HUD for some reason cannot be made wide enough to show long keywords after each checkbox, no matter how wide the screen on which it is displayed is.
    * In my library, the search HUD shows multiple checkbox items with the identical keyword. Interestingly, selecting one or the other provides different results from the search. However, entering the phrase in the "Quick Search" field does return the correct picture subset. Perhaps rebuilding the library would help with this problem.
    * I thought that the point of the hierarchical structure of the Keywords HUD would make it automatic to enter mutiple keywords which were related. For example, if I have a keyword of "tree" with a subcategory of "oak" I thought you would automatically get "tree" when you applied "oak" to a picture or pictures. Unless I'm missing something there is no way to do this. May a modifier key held down while dragging a keyword to a picture could add the parent keyword(s) as well.
Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Here is another issue with keywords.
Why is a search using a single keyword so slow? On my PowerBook, a search of a relatively small library--1500 images--takes in the neighborhood of 17-20 seconds. How can it take this long? A similar search of my full library (about 7000 images) using Portfolio 7 is virtually instantaneous. The graphics card surely can't be blamed for this one. This is, after all, the company which highlights their Spotlight technology...
Two other nits. First, it's not clear when the search is complete. There's no progress bar or other indication of completion, so sometimes when you do a search, a group of pictures appear and you think it's done, but suddenly more images appear. Then you wait a while until you feel certain it must be done.
Secondly, when a search is finished and the subset of images which were found is displayed, there's no indication that it's not the entire project or libarary, particularly when the Search HUD is dismissed. For example, it just says "104 images displayed", rather than "104 of 1500 images displayed" or something like that. It ought to be very obvious that you are not viewing the entire container of images.
