Keyword list problem

Hi all, i seem to have too many key words, I can no longer scroll right down to the end of the list. I have just load lr3 beta and its the same, has anyone else had this problem or am I missing something here.
can anyone assist on this please.???

I have a related problem - while I can see all my keywords, when I
scroll down past a large number of them (I'm guessing around 2,048?) the entries no longer respond to the mouse hovering over them or right-clicking to get a context menu.
I can get around the problem by filtering and then using the filtered list to get the context menu and the little arrow to appear when hovering the mouse over the entry.
I use Lightroom to tag each photo from races, marathons, triathlons, and so on, with the bib number for each athlete.  Many times there are more than 2,000 athletes in these events.

  • Keyword list problem: "No photos match the filter"

    LR4.1 64-bit Windows 7
I have  relatively small (1k), and completely flat (non-hierarchical) keyword list.
for a small number of keywords, I have the following problem:
If I open Library, witht the centre panel in Grid View, then select Keyword List from the RHS panel, and select one these "problem" keywords, On the rhs of the screen it shows a number, indicating the number of images to which this keyword is attached.
I then click the arrow next to the number to display the images with this keyword.
the library filter opens in the centre panel of the screen area, dropping down the Keyword filter and correctly highlighting the selected keyword; however against this, the keyword show 0 matches and the message "No photos match the filter" is displayed.
If I right-click on the keyword in the Keyword List  and select delete, the message is displayed that the keyword will be deleted from n photos
Thus I don't  know if there are photos with the keyword which are just not being displayed, or whether there are a number of "phantom" keywords which are not associated with any images.
It may be that I am lacking understanding of some aspect of LR functionality; or that somehow there is an indexing problem within my LR catalogue.
thanks in advance for any help and advice

Thanks, I've been having this trouble in my catalog since LR3, problem is still there in LR4.3.
I used your suggestion to show the offending photos in a smart collection and could finally see the photos to fix all the keywords that way.
Most of mine have come from duplicate keywords that I accidentally created - I have a hierarchy of keywords and some have appearedin two places. So I have been trying to delete the old unwanted ones but have not been able to see the photos when using the filter or the keyword arrow.
My solution was to rename every one of the old dud keywords with a suffix of "XXX" - this also helps me to not use those old keywords again. Then I made a smart collection that simply searches for all keywords containing "XXX". From the collection, I go through the photos and replace the old keywords with the new corrected one. Once the filter shows the count of the number of photos down to 0 as it should be, I can finally delete that old keyword!
I am keeping this new collection (called "XXX Keywords to fix") for when it happens later... This sure sounds like a bug that Adobe needs to sort out.

  • Bug with Lightroom 4? - Big problem in the keyword list!!

    Hello guys,
I am Rafael Rojas, a nature and landscape photographer. This is my first post, trigered by a quite bothering problem I am having with my LR...So hello everybody!
I upgraded to LR 4 a week ago. Today I realized many of the keywords I have installed in Lightroom do not appear on the keyword list (basically all keywords after the letter S). Moreover, half of the keywords which appear on the list are not editable: that is, I cannot assign them to the selected image (by clicking on the left box), or I cannot double click them or right click them to get the Edit panel. All the rest of keywords (those which appear on the list on top), can be edited and there is no problem.
When I export the keywords as a .txt file (in metadata, export keywords) I can see that all the keywords are there. When I try to write some of them on the box LR recognize them and adds them automatically. However, I just cannot see them on my keyword list or just cannot edit them.
The reason I want to edit the keywords is because many of them got desactivated while upgrading (something more people have reported). Right now, I cannot send my images to my stock galleries, since many of my important keywords are not active, and I just cannot edit them...
    Can you help me please?
    thanks so much!!
    rafael

    Well, 64 bits.
And yes, it seems when I erase one keyword, the list "shows" one more below...so it seems the problem is related to a certain limit in number.
That would be still a problem I could live with, the big problem tough is that many of the keywords got "deactivated" alone by Lightroom (see problem here described http://www.backyardsilver.com/2012/02/strange-behavior-with-capitalized-keywords/) and that means I NEED to edit some keywords which are really important and which are not active. Otherwise, when I export the images those keywords are not embedded...
    Any thoughts?
    Rafa

  • In Keyword List panel, need to support quotes for AND'ing multi-word keyword searches

As far as I know (and read around), there's no way to search multi-word keywords in the keywords list panel using the "Filter Keywords" box. i.e. If I want to search for the "Great Blue Heron" keyword in a large animal keywords list I have, Lightroom will OR the three words instead of AND'ing them like Aperture does more intuitively. Adding quotes like "Great Blue Heron" doesn't work either. Again this is to filter a large keyword lists through the "Filter Keywords" box in the Keywords List panel.
Am I missing something? Is it possible to AND multi-word keywords?
    Thanks.

    Rob,
as far as I know spaces are also contained and allowed in controlled vocabularies (e.g. for the "official" names of animals 'little panda' for example and plants). I'm using spaces for names very often. As a prof. photographer I need to write captions for all of my images before sending them to my agency with WHEN/WHAT/WHERE/WHO etc. So when shooting persons very often or regular (e.g. politicians or athletes) I started years ago to create keywords and hierarchies for them. So it is much easier and more comfortable to assign them later.
Please check out PhotoMechanic or IMatch. These progs doesn't have any problems with spaces in keywords and keyword searches...
BTW: when using a space in a search I expect that the default behaviour of such a space is a locical AND.

  • Keyword List Cleanup

What is the best way to reorder my failed keyword strategy: In the past I have, for example, entered persons' names as standalone keywords, but now wish the name keywords were child keywords of People. Dragging Mary Smith to People does not retroactively assign the Mary Smith > People heirarchy to the images currently bearing Mark Smith, and the dragging is tedious because my keyword list is so huge.
Is there some means of selecting a keyword and making sit inside of another keyword: Make Mary Smith sit inside of People? We can do the opposite with control click of course, meaning create a keyword inside of a selected keyword, but not the reverse near as I can discern.
    Many thanks,
    John-

    Zyboo,
I tested my keyword hierarchy on a subset of my main catalog before I effectively used it. I exported "representative" photographs from my main catalog (I took about 5% of the photographs) into a test catalog and applied my keyword hierarchy to that test catalog. I then started keywording all the photographs therein, noting where my hierarchy was wrong or needed improving (keywords I hadn't included, keywords I had put at the wrong place in the hierarchy, branches that needed merging - these were the most common problems I encountered). I then updated my Excel file, zapped the test catalog, created a new one with other, different "representative" photographs from my main catalog, and started again. In total I did this four times before I applied the resulting keyword hierarchy to my main catalog. Tedious, but well worth it. Key in this process is to select different "representative" photographs each time.
    Hope this helps.

  • CS4 Bridge short term memory "keyword list"

    Greetings ,
I have a Mac G4 2002 with CS4 11.0.1 and I went through all my photos in one three day period and made keywords for the relevant image selections. I love the way it works. ..... BUT !  if I turn off the machine and later come back and open bridge to quick select my photo criteria for editing, my keyword list defaulted to the bridge example list that came with the system. I looked in Preferences and did not find a selection that seemed relevant.
I hope I am just being stupid, missing something simple like "Save As,  keyword list under name ....?" The keywords are still associated with the picture files. I can get back all of the keywords by spending a few hours and clicking one by one on every image in storage. The list eventually builds itself up to it previous glory. But shut down and you get to do it all over again.
    Thanks for your assistance !

Yes, I do shut my computer down the correct way by going to the apple menu first and using the shut down menu function, more anal than that I close the applications that are open first prior to going to the apple menu.
Thank you for the purge cache suggestions.
I did purge once the cache files and it made no change in behavior.
    On your suggestion :
A:   [ I proceeded by opening some photo folders and clicked on some images so that the list could build up again some ( I only did a few folders ).
Then I closed out of out of the application and the shut down. On booting back the OS and opening the application the list had still shrunk. ]
I then repeated "A" and but on bringing the application back up I used the "Option" key hold down so that I could purge Preference files. Shrunk again!
I tried the "purge cache for folder" option, and then Repeated "A" and the result was the same, shrunken list.
I did learn that I did not need to shut down the computer to loose the keyword list however, it goes away with just the closing of the application option.
I also learned that the list is not completely lost now, it defaults to a shorter list of my own words (at least now it does). That default shrunken list is consistent the last two times on re-starting the application.
I am wondering now if there had been some error made in how a list could be put together. Like did I screw up with hierarchy protocol somehow, or should we restrict our naming to a only a two tier system instead of using a three tier system?
From Bridge the suggestion keywords (ie: Mathew, New York, Paris) don't come up anymore. I don't have those images, but interestingly enough, I don't see those names coming up anymore.
Earlier I did try weeks ago to reload the Photoshop CS4 package onto my computer hoping that would solve this problem. One thing I did not do at that time was use "FIND" to search out where relative preference files might lay and then dump those in the trash prior to re-install. I don't know, maybe I have no option but to try that again but by dumping the preferences prior to install.
Since we did just try the "option key" on start of application, does this fully do the same thing?
    Thanks again for your suggestions!

  • Keyword list is missing

My whole keyword list is missing in Lightroom 2. The keyword sets are there. I am using Win Vista. Has anyone else had this problem?

The keyword list is there and it shows over 4000 photos in Places but not any of the many sub-terms in Places. It only shows church which I put in this morning. If I click on a photo, it shows 3 different keywords for that photo under Keyword Tags but only the category Places in the Keyword List (I had many other categories). I am pretty sure the whole list was there yesterday.

  • Keyword list is truncated about 1/2 way through alphabet

My keyword list (LR 3.4.1) in the Library is truncated about 1/2 through it.  I can only see into the P section of the alphabet.  My keyword list is flat, not hierarchical..  From what I read this is either a feature OR a BUG since at least version 1.x.
Is there a solution to this BUG yet?  If so what?

Lightroom has a limitation of showing only something like 1603 keywords in the keywords list. Appearantly this is a Windows limitation, or a lack of LR dealing with a Windows limitation.
If you see something like 1603 keywords, this is what your problem is. As a workaround, I suggest a very simple alphabetical hierarchy. Create a keyword  called "A". Then select all the keywords that start with A and drag them  into the new A keyword. Repeat for B-Z. Then double-click each of the  letter keywords, and uncheck "Include on Export".

  • Strange Keyword List Filtering Behavior

When I filter down for a word and want to see its sub-word and maybe add another one I click on it and reset the filter. And after that I can browse down until white line of selection where I stop and discover what words I have inside selected word and add another one if I need. It worked this way in LR2 but now selection of a word in filtering mode doesn't save when I reset a filter! But selection is not filtering! Why you've made this change???
Update: I just got why Adobe made this change. Because now I don't need to expand word branches to see the end of it with requested word—LR3 temporarily expand the branches when you search for a word. BUT if you select a word of TEMPORARY expanded branch—the selection won't be saved after filter reseting!
So, we can use the following workaround: If you expand all keyword listing down to the end white line selection will be saved after filter reseting.
But the best solution I see here is to give a possibility to see sub-words of filtered word even if they don't have requested word—just make them gray for example (but save a possibility to edit them).
Flickr plug-in and better watermarking (which doesn't work for my demands) are reasons why I wanted to upgrade but this is a second keyword list change which I don't like! You can check for another change in LR3 Keyword List behavior here http://forums.adobe.com/message/2908024#2908024 Because of it I need to have keyword list with all synonyms opened in text editor to search before adding another unnecessary word which I already have in synonyms. If you have CV with big branches and a lot of synonyms—this is a problem. Please fix!

    HI William...
Hopefully just a corrupted preference file.
    Locate this file. com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences.
Drag that .plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, boot from the SL disk and check the hard drive for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
    Check available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.*

  • Bridge CS5 ate my keyword list.

Actually, this has happened twice now within about three days.  Fortunately, I export my keyword CV list almost every time I update it,  so I'm not really losing much other than time, but it's annoying as it's  happened more than once.  My first instinct is to run a virus check and/or reinstall Bridge, but I wanted to see if anyone else was facing this problem, too.
    Win 7, 64-bit, Bridge ver 4.0.3.9.
    -Greg

And the weird thing is that it doesn't happen between a shut-down and restart of the program, it just happens spontaneously, out of the blue.  (Or so it seems.)
I checked the directory folder you suggested and everything looks good there.
I've just taken to exporting the keyword list every time I enter a new keyword.  That way, I can always reinstall immediately.
Maybe I'll submit this as a tech issue to Adobe....

  • Keyword list too long

since iphoto version 8.0.2 up to the current version 9.1.5 I have one problem: my keyword list is too long. so clicking on "search" and then on "keyword" opens a list of four collumns and way too much rows for my display. so all keywords beginning with "a" until "k" are not visible and subsequently not choosable for search.
how can I search the first part of my keywords from "a" to "k" when the list is too long to be completely displayed?
PS: in the first iphoto-versions I bypassed the problem by using "keyword-manager" (bullstorm.se) but since the newest version, it is no longer compatible...

    You can't, unfortunately.
IPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
Of course, you can still search using Smart Albums.

  • Keyword list errors

My keywords were part of my import from Elements into LR2.  Some where in the process I developed some keyword errors.
I have one keyword that shows 59 photos in the keyword list, a sub category with 5 photos and a sub-sub category with 2 photos.  All categories and subs have the same name.  When I use the Library filter I can find only 49 photos.  When I click on the arrow to the right of any of the keywords 49 photos are shown, not the 59 /5/2 listed.
How can I correct this problem?

This is a long-standing bug in LR on Windows -- the Keyword List pane is limited to showing about 1600 keywords.  A workaround is to introduce more hierarchy into your keywords and keep most of the parent keywords collapsed.
You could submit a bug report to the new Adobe feedback site:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/products/photoshop_family_photoshop_lightro om
(There may already be a bug report there on this topic, but I couldn't find it.  It's perfectly ok, and preferrable, to submit a new one and let Adobe merge it with an existing one if they can find it.)

  • Shortcut to close Keywording List

Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut to close and open the Keywording list in the Library? I very often go from Keywords to Metadata and back and need to close and open the Keywords because the list is too long to scroll. I can't find seem to find this on the keyboard shortcuts list and using the Solo Mode only solves a part of the problem. Thanks for any help.

Actually this works throughout all Lightroom panels: count how many there are and use ctrl plus its number to toggle it open/closed or just bring it into scrolling focus.
    Works in develop module, too.
The right hand panels are adressed by ctrl, the left-hand panels by ctrl+shift.

  • LR 3 Keyword list issues

Hello, i'm running LR 3.2 on win 7 64 bit.  The key word list shows up but ALL the key words after the word "teepee" in my list are "dead."  I mean, the words are there, but when i try to click on them they dont respond by bringing up the images associated with that key word.     I have bout 140k images in LR and the key word list is rather long, i'm not sure how long or how to tell how many key words there are, but none of them "work" after the word "teepee."
Does anyone have an explanation for this, and can you provide a recommended solution?
    Thank you,
    Tony Bynum

Thanks 99 for your reply.  I'm sure i dont understand it however.  My key words are just that, key words.   I am likely guilty of doing something wrong, but your explanation leaves me still without any means of identifying my problems and no way to fix them . . .
Again, I likely have done something that has caused this but i'm not sure what. . .  I also know only that i have a keyword list, I dont know anything about a hierarchy . . .
Anyone else care to help explain this or point me in the correct direction?
    Thank you,
    Tony
