Keywording and the endless spinning ball of death

Hi- I'm using 1.0 on a g4 ibook.
I enter keywords, hit either tab or return when finished, and lightroom hangs up. For a long time.
Lightroom is otherwise fast and smooth on my computer.
Any help would be appreciated.
Don

When I had my iBook 800 w/ 640Mb Ram I had no problem keywording and I tend to runn a number of apps together.

  • IPhoto 08 and the merciless spinning ball

Ever since I upgraded to Leopard (I have had iLife 08 for a while) I have had a lot of trouble with iPhoto 08 "hanging" when I try to open it. It hangs and runs the ball forever; then it might open, but if I click on a photo, the ball is back for another long period of time. Also, when I try to load photos from our camera (which used to happen in a matter of seconds), I have to wait another "forever" for iPhoto to open, plus a long time for it to download the pics. What is up with that???

    gleter:
It might be a permissions issue. launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library and select the option to repair permissions.
If that doesn't help try running iRepair on your iPhoto LIbrary package as follows:
1 - download iRepair and launch.
2 - click on the lock and enter your admin password
3 - click on the Select button and navigate to and select the iPhoto library.
5 - set the owner to your short admin name with read, write and execute privileges.
6 - set group to staff or the current group with read, write and execute privileges
7 - set others to read only
6 - click on the Apply button.
It may work better or not.
What may be of more importance is the amount of free space on your boot drive. Post back with that number and we'll go from there.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I have Mac OS X 10.5.8. Suddenly, my browsers and other apps have drastically slowed and the swod, spinning wheel of death, appears routinely. Have unplugged power and restarted, and for a moment, it is better. But swod returns quickly. What gives?

When I do most anything with the mouse, swod appears. Typing this right now is going fine, but any app, sometimes any movement by the mouse bri;ngs on the swod. This happened rather suddenly. Right now the typing is somewhat sluggish, my keyboard strokes being a bit ahead of what appears on screen. Any suggestions?

You may get a reply here but it's best to post a question in the column that it naturally belongs to ... in this case Power Macs.
All the same, have you recently reviewed your free space / memory levels.   You need 10GB free space to operate comfortably

  • MacBook Pro 13 and the Spinning Ball of Death. How to fix it?

I bought my macbook pro last year and after several months, (summer 2010) i faced an isight problem. I went to info-quest, where they fix computers here in Athens,Greece and charged me 458 euros. Fortunately, I had the warranty and paid nothing. Till then I was really satisfied with my mac. However, recently i faced another problem with it. Yesterday, my mac became so slow and i get the spinning ball of death. I can't do anything right now, for instance, if i want to shut it down, i have to wait for a long period of time til it shuts down and my mac becomes so unresponsive. To sum up, everything i do, scroll down, scroll up, click the x button, the spinning beachball of death reappears. I really hope there is a solution for this problem.

Any number of things may factor into the appearance of a spinning ball of death, but it basically comes down to an operation or command that is stalled.
First, your quick fix: when you experience a SBOD, click on an empty patch of screen so you can access the pulldown Apple menu. Scroll down to Force Quit; approve of the Force quit, and enter. The command or operation will be aborted, and you'll be able to use your MBP again.
Second, the next time it happens, take note of which application is stalled when you navigate to Force Quit. It will be noted in red, and show as inactive. Now, you know which application is causing you the problem. It may be that the application is faulty, or you have too many windows open at the same time, or there's a conflict of some sort.
Respond to this post so we can fix this once and for all!

  • FCPX and spinning ball of death

Ever since I "up"  graded to Mavericks, FCPX has struggled, my whole computer slowed down drastically so much that I had to take it
to the genius bar.   Five "geniuses"  tried to figure out what was wrong for SIX HOURS!
Continually assuring me this was not usual.   Yeah, right.  Across the internet the spinning ball of death with FCPX and Mavericks is pretty well known.
The only solution they offered was to wipe my drive.  After six hours and NO other solutions, I conceded to the murder of my computer, backing it up, of course.
FCPX seemed to work temporarily after that, but as soon I got into serious editing it went right back to taunting me with endless rainbow balls spiraling whenever I needed to simply look at a clip! Or event!
    It worked FINE before Mavericks!!!!!!!
    I regret the upgrade...
I hope you fix this because jobs are on the line here....  And sleep is necessary for an editor to do her job.

Could not agree more. Trying to prepare DVDs of dance student evidence for assessment of final grades. Needing to select material from various clips all in same event to illustrate key points for each student (a perfectly reasonable editing task). ALL clips have been optimised and all copied into the library. Almost every time I need to preview a new clip (i.e. skim from one clip into another) I get the beach ball and have to wait minutes.
I tried raising this as a bug (I am a developer) and got brushed off with the "not enough information" reply, because I cannot find any of these problems reported in the system logs.
Everything was working really, really well before Mavericks and 10.1 - I think someone re-wrote things for the new MacPro but broke it for iMac users. Not a good way of persuading me to buy a Mac Pro, by the way.

  • How do you fix the spinning ball of death?

I have a Macbook Pro 13 mid 2009. It passes the Apple Hardware Test with no errors/problems. Every time I run the disk utility, I get permission errors. I fix them and they come back again. I did a clean install of OS X 10.8.4, but the problem is still there. Could it be a bad hard drive cable? bad hard drive? memory? If so, how do you test this since it passed the Apple Hardware Test?

I jumped the gun. The spinning ball of death is back. Here is the console dump for when the problem occurred.

  • Media browser should open a folder, but stucks, and giving an endless spinning ball

media browser should open a folder, but stucks, and giving an endless spinning ball. How can I reset at startup Pages?

What have you got in the folder?
It may simply be large and numerous, with possibly graphics that need to be converted like .eps, .ai, .bmp etc and it takes time to open, particularly if you don't have enough memory on a slow machine.

  • Power went out and now spinning ball of death

This morning the power went out while I had been working in InDesign and Illustrator. I came in and saved the project before the back up power went out but did not get the Mac powered off completely before the back up stopped. When the power came back on, I restarted the mac and Indesign, and my project is now constantly getting the spinning ball of death; I can't even recover it anymore in Indesign (I can open the file, but the recovery was lost). ALL other programs are fine. Just indesign.
I went to look for help online and found a recommendation to turn everything off, unplug mac, let it rest then hold the power button down and replug the power then power the mac back on, and now my fan is running at super high speed and I still am having huge problems with InDesign. 1) can you tell me how to get the fan back to the way it was and 2) what do I do about spinny rainbow ball in Indesign.
    HELP!!!!!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
For the fans issue, first reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If it doesn't work, it's possible that the computer has a hardware problem.
Apart from that, it's possible that your hard disk got damaged because of the power outage. To check if it's OK, open Disk Utility (it's in /Applications/Utilities), choose "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and verify the disk. If it shows a problem, start in OS X Recovery (hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting), open Disk Utility and repair the Macintosh HD partition. If it couldn't be repaired, the hard disk has to be replaced

  • CANNOT GET RID OF THE SPINNING BALL OF DEATH

CANNOT GET RID OF THE SPINNING BALL OF DEATH.  TRIED MANY FORUMS AND NOTHING FROM APPLE, WHO DO NOT SEEM TO CARE!

Its actually the spinning ball of cool your jets while I am doing something -- Apple used to use a picture of a wrist watch - which was a better way of saying it.
I get the beach ball when starting up Photoshop - and in same when going into functions that are in VM or not open because I don't use them that much.
Other than that - you haven't stated what the problem is.

i hate to drive on Unix code. Apple expect to make that easily friendly use .
The Simple Apple way would be to do an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
Then perhaps reinstalling other APPs if needed.

  • Recovery with InDesign6 and spinning ball of death

This morning the power went out while I had been working in InDesign and  Illustrator.
I came in and saved the project before the back up power  went out but did not get the Mac powered off completely before the back  up power stopped. When the power came back on, I restarted the mac and  Indesign, and my project is now constantly getting the spinning ball of  death; I can't even open the file even though it says it was saved. ALL other programs are fine. Just problems with indesign.
I have reset the SMC and did a disc check on the hard drive and the disc utility said everything was fine.
PLEASE HELP! I am freaking out about my project!!
    Thanks.

No. Placing pages will not help.
Try exporting a file that will open to .idml (see Remove minor corruption by exporting). I suspect, though that tehre may be program damage from the crash. Have you verified that you can create a new file and add pages?
If the .idml doesn't work, the next thing to try, if the new file is editable, is to creat a new file the same size as the one with a problem, then rename Master A to something you are not using in the problem file. Open the Paragraph Styles panel and from the flyout menu choose Load Paragraph Styles and choose the problem file as the source. Import the Basic Paragraph style and tell ID to use the incoming style.
Next, go back to the problem file and select all the pages in the Pages panel and opent the panel flyout menu. Choose Move Pages... and for the target pick your new file. Put the pages BEFORE page 1 so they don't switch sides.
In the new file, delet the last page which is now an extra, and see how it works.

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

    Hello,
For thwe last weeks my macbook has been stalling and the beachball spins endlessly. Is this a hardrive issue? What should I do?
    Thanks for help.

Did you try repairing the disk permissions under Disk Utility?
If that doesn't help I would recommend you backup your files and do a fresh install of Snow Leopard (meaning you have to boot the Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility to format the hard drive before proceeding).
