Keywords and naming photos

I know this has been asked before but I'm still searching for a solution.
My fiancee and I are both photographers and we take thousands of photos for our business and I'm still trying to find the best workflow to minimise work and time wasted.
At the moment after a shoot we download our photos to a folder, appropriately named, on the desktop of our i-Books.
Then we import the photos to i-Photo and then the photos in the folder on the desktop are copied over to external hard drives and the original folder on the desktop is deleted.
Thus far we now have photos in i-Photos and back-ups safe and sound on external hard drives.
The problem arises with naming and keywording photos in the back-up folders and i-Photo. We use multiple libraries using iPhoto Buddy, but I think our problem would be the same even if we used i-Photo to create multiple libraries.
Here, at last I hear you say, is the problem. How do we name and keyword the photos just once without having to re-name or re-keyword anytime/everytime we move a photo from one place to another?
Most files for other things in our business I can sync without problems but photos are causing a lot of wasted time due to having keep re-naming and keywording photos in different locations.
Any ideas, thoughts etc greatly appreciated.

John
How do we name and keyword the photos just once without having to re-name or re-keyword anytime/everytime we move a photo from one place to another?
The naming first:
You copy the pics onto the Mac. Then import them into iPhoto. Title them in iPhoto then Select the pics and go File -> Export. In the export dialogue you can opt to name the exported files with the title you gave them in iPhoto. So, do this, then export them to your back up. Result, two set of pics, one job of naming.
Alternative: Name the pics using a bulk file renamer like File List before importing them into iPhoto - same result.
As to keyword, do you want to write them as exif data? Have a look at this website
http://highearthorbit.com/289/
which uses an AppleScript and a command line tool to achieve this.
Old Toad also has a tutorial on using iView Media Pro in conjunction with iPhoto.
Is there a particular reason why you're keeping the back up entirely separate from iPhoto? Why not just copy the iPhoto Library Folder to an external and keep it up to date with an incremental back up tool like DejaVu ?

  • Lost my Keywords and edited photos?

Hi, I got a new computer! Yeah for me. My photos were stored on an external hard drive that I used to access the pics, keywords, etc. on the old PC because the hard drive on the laptop was too small.
So, I got a new computer, large hard drive, re-installed lightroom and copied my DNG photos to the new HD on the new computer (PC, by the way) Alas no keywords and it also looks like the photos I edited are not there either.
Where did I go wrong? I still have the external hard drive. I am assuming that the pictures with the edits and keywords are still on the external HD. OK, I'm probably hoping about that one.
If yes, how would I determine that? And how do I copy them over with the keywords and previously edited pictures. I'm probably not the first person to have this experience. Thank you and I appreciate the help.

First thing to understand is that LR uses a catalog too keep track of everything. When you import pictures into LR it doesn't move or copy the original files, it just takes note of where they are. When you make any adjustments or edits to the pictures these changes are kept in the catalog, the original picture file is never changed. You have to 'export' a new copy of the picture with the changes applied if you want to see/use it outwith LR.
On your new PC, having installed LR it will have created a new catalog. You need to get the LR catalog file from the old laptop, copy it to the new PC and get LR to open it. You should see your pictures and your edits. LR will show a symbol top right of every picture because it has 'lost' the pictures, in that it thinks they are on the external drive and it's now gone.
Under the Library tab select 'Find missing photos' to re-make the links.
The LR catalog is called *.lrcat where the '*' depends on what you called it when you installed LR or the default name which is something like Lightroom.lrcat. Exaclty what directory it's in depends on a few things that can vary depending on choices made at install time.
    Good luck.

  • I used to give my photo's keywords. Most of the time I have several photo's for the same keyword and it was possible to select all those photo's and give them the keyword in one move. Since of few weeks I can't do that anymore and I find it very annoying.

Check, if you have the "Primary Only" option enabled. Then keywords will only be applied to the "Primary Image":
See:                  Keywords or ratings are applied only to one of the selected images - why?
Uncheck the little square button with the "1".

  • Importing photos from ZoomBrowser into iPhoto without losing keywords and star ratings

I have been using Canon's ZoomBrowser EX on my Windows Vista laptop. I have just bought a MacBook Air running Lion. I would like to import all of my photos to iPhoto, but when I do this I lose all of the keywords and star ratings I have associated with my many photos. Is there any way to import the photos into iPhoto while retaining the keywords and star ratings so that I can use them in iPhoto? Doing this manually would be impractical due to the large number of photos involved.
    Thanks.
    - Charlie

    Keywords:
Iphoto can certainly import them if they are written to the correct fields of the standard metadata. They key question is can your Windows app write them to the files?
    Ratings
There's no real way to share ratings via standard metadata, but if you can write the keywods, then you can quickly tag the pics with simple keywords (1star, 2star) and when imported to iPhoto recreate your rating system.
So, the question is really about your existing software and what it can do.

  • Read/write keywords using applescript and iMagine Photo

Does anyone know if applescript & iMagine Photo are capable of reading/writing to the IPTC keywords?
I can't seem to figure it out. I use
    {exif type:info, exif unicode:gImageInfoText}}
to modify description ({exif type:info, exif unicode:gImageInfoText}) field of the IPTC data but can't understand how to write to the keywords field.
Does anyone know to simply read the keywords form the IPTC data?
    Thanks.
    Pedro

You could install [ExifTool|http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool>, and then use “do shell script” commands such as in the following examples:
    *do shell script "exiftool -keywords=AppleScript -keywords=\"iMagine Photo\" -keywords=IPTC ~/Desktop/myPicture.jpg"*
    --> " 1 image files updated"
*do shell script "exiftool -keywords ~/Desktop/myPicture.jpg"*
--> "Keywords : AppleScript, iMagine Photo, IPTC"

  • Newbie Question: Importing (from PC) and Organizing Photos in iPhoto

    Hi everyone,
I am currently a PC user and am contemplating buying an iMac, and I'm trying to determine if iPhoto will meet my needs for photo importing and organization.
I currently have around 20-30 gigs of digital photos and am using Windows Photo Gallery (for Windows Vista) to view/organize/import them.
The directories are organized by the photo date taken in the format "yyyy-mm-dd" .
Some of these directories are appended with an event name if applicable, i.e. "2011-12-25_Christmas Party" while others will only have the date, i.e. "2011-12-20"
My photos are named according to date/time taken so that a file listing will display the photos in chronologic order. Again, some of these will be appended with an event name or other descriptive label. So, many photos will look like this: "yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss" while others will look like this: "yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss_event name"
A possible complicating factor in all of this is that some of the photos were taken with a camera where the time/date was not set properly, or with cameras whose date/times were set for a different time zone. I adjusted this within Windows Photo Gallery, but I am not sure if it permanently changed the date/time in the photo file's properties... I've seen some evidence that it may not have. I did make sure that the file name was named according to the correct date/time in every case, however.
Now, here are my questions about using iPhoto:
    1) When I initially import my photos into iPhoto, will iPhoto recognize (or is there a way to make it recognize) each separate directory as a separate event based on the directory in which it is found?
    2) If I copy photos into iPhoto library, will it respect and preserve my directory structure wherein photos are separated by date taken? If not, then is it practical to still use iPhoto without copying the files into its library (by keeping them organized as subdirectories in a directory elsewhere and having iPhoto setup to automatically display photos in that directory)?
    3) If I use iPhoto to import pictures from a digital camera, can I control how it sorts those pictures into directories by making it name the directories in yyyy-mm-dd format? This is what Windows does and I find that format very convenient for organizing and viewing photo files, especially those that I have not yet tagged.
    4) Again, if I use iPhoto to import pictures from a digital camera, can I control the naming convention so that photos are named according to date&time taken (i.e. yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss ), or at least according to just date taken (i.e. yyyy-mm-dd) as well as appended with event names?
    5) Will I be able to edit photo properties, such as date taken, within iPhoto if I discover that a photo is incorrectly organized?
    Thanks in advance,
    JB

Here's the thing: You've put a lot of time developing a system of managing files. iPhoto is all about Photos. So, frankly. forget your current system and use iPhoto. it has more powerful and more varied tools for managing your snaps.
There's a conceptual leap to be made with apps like iPhoto. The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
All of your queries are about files and filenames and file storage. They're all pretty much moot if you use iPhoto. If you use iPhoto it becomes the "go-to" app for all your photos. Everything you need to do with the photos can be done via iPhoto or with iPhoto.
When I initially import my photos into iPhoto, will iPhoto recognize (or is there a way to make it recognize) each separate directory as a separate event based on the directory in which it is found?
Yes, but...  Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken. You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.
Albums are a much more varied and powerful organising tool.
    2) If I copy photos into iPhoto library, will it respect and preserve my directory structure wherein photos are separated by date taken?
Well forget about "directories", you're talking Events, Album and Folders now. But yes, you can define Events (or Albums) based on date. However, given that iPhoto can sort on date, can search on date and date ranges and can generate Smart Albums based on date (say, All the Photos from 2010, only the photos from June 2010 or just the photos fron June 10, 2010, or even the photos from May 12 2009 to July 11 2010) how the fies are organised on the disk is of little concern. You never access them via the HD anyway.
If not, then is it practical to still use iPhoto without copying the files into its library (by keeping them organized as subdirectories in a directory elsewhere and having iPhoto setup to automatically display photos in that directory)?
Yes you can do this. It's called a Referenced Library. I don't recommend it - especially for a new Mac user - and it adds nothing except complexity to the process. It has no extra capability. It's just dumb file storage. For more on this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
    3) If I use iPhoto to import pictures from a digital camera, can I control how it sorts those pictures into directories by making it name the directories in yyyy-mm-dd format?
    No.
This is what Windows does and I find that format very convenient for organizing and viewing photo files, especially those that I have not yet tagged.
There are various tools in iPhoto that will allow you to find photos that you have not yet tagged or organised.
Again, if I use iPhoto to import pictures from a digital camera, can I control the naming convention so that photos are named according to date&time taken (i.e. yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss ), or at least according to just date taken (i.e. yyyy-mm-dd) as well as appended with event names?
You can add titles to photos, yes. But as the date and time of the photo are already in the Exif, using those in the name of the photo is a bit redundant.
Will I be able to edit photo properties, such as date taken, within iPhoto if I discover that a photo is incorrectly organized?
    Yes.
It's a bit to take in I know, and I always suggest to people that the best thing is to create a library on their Mac, import a couple of hndred pics and explore what it does (and doesn't), and see if it works for you.
iPhoto uses a lot of virtualisation. Photos are stored in the Library. (Events are just one of two possible views of the Library). Albums reference photos in the Library. So a shot can be in any number of albums and use no extra disk space. Keywording is also very powerful. Here’s a stock answer I use for folks when wondering what iPhoto can do:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
Finally, all of this can be exported from iPhoto should you decide to migrate to a different app or different OS in a year or two.

  • IPhoto 6 unusably slow (starting with keywords and then the rest o product)

As I've mentioned in a post in another thread, I upgraded to iPhoto 6 a few weeks ago. From the moment of upgrade, anything associated with the keyword function (applying, searching, even scrolling the keyword box) is painfully slow--60 seconds to 3+ minutes at a time (that's the average--I've had waits of 90 seconds to apply 1 keyword to 1 photo and 8 minutes to apply 1 keyword to 27 photos). Since that last post, I've also discovered that the longer I try to use the product, the slower EVERYTHING in the product gets (other than scrolling the library).
I use iPhoto as a database, not an image editor. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, the types of things I'm trying to do include:
    * apply one keyword to 30 photos
    * click on one photo after having assigned a keyword to a different subset of photos
    * scroll down one page in the keyword box
    * select 4 photos
    * scroll one page in the main iPhoto view of photos
    * search by keyword
I've re-installed, re-built, and re-started. I can also say that the longer I try to use iPhoto 6 in one session, the worse the performance gets. Yesterday morning I had to keyword 150 photos from a party and forced myself to use iPhoto so they could be searched with another set of pictures already in iPhoto. It took me OVER 1 HOUR to assign an average of 6 keywords to each photo with selections averaging 10-15 photos at a time. I am not exaggerating--I timed it (63 minutes). For the record, no other applications were running: iPhoto was flying solo (I thought running alone might help performance, but it didn't. I'm no software programmer but I have a lot of experience with computers and whatever is tying iPhoto's resources into a knot seems to be between iPhoto and iPhoto or iPhoto and the OS.)
Also, the longer I used the product, the fewer "actions" it saw. So, for example, at the beginning I could click 3 keywords on the same keyword pane view and all 3 would apply to the selected photos (with a still dismal response, but at least I was getting 3 assignments for each response). By the end, only 1 assignment would be "seen" at a time even if 3 were clicked (and the other 2 would be translated into some random actions as iPhoto would scroll the keyword pane and assign a random keyword--not necessarily on the same side or the same position on the screen of the keywords I had actually clicked). The result? The functional response time tripled.
The product is not only much worse than iPhoto 5, it's unusably slow. Sadly, I've already upgraded. So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me:
    1) Is there any way to know officially if Apple is addressing this specific problem? I know other people are experiencing this and thought there would be a fix from Apple by now, but nothing.
    2) Is there any way to bail out of iPhoto 6 and go back to iPhoto 5? I know there's no official path, but (A) is there any unofficial path and (B) what would I lose?
    3) Since iPhoto 6 is the only iLife product I use, I feel especially ripped-off. What I'd really like to do is get a refund and pursue a different solution. Any thoughts there?

    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Old Toad
Since I last wrote I have:
    * Rebuilt the directories with Disk Warrior. The problems I had were 30+ overlaps between iPhoto images and iTunes song files.
This got rid of the 8 minute responses, but performance was still unusably appalling.
    * I cleaned out the user caches with OnyX.
    No change in iPhoto performance.
    * I reinstalled iPhoto. (Because of the overlaps I also tried to reinstall iTunes but it doesn't have an obvious path for that. Given the number of hours I've already burned on this Apple problem I didn't have the fight in me for another one).
    No change.
    * Per another post in this forum I emptied iPhoto trash, then per Old Toad I rebuilt the iPhoto library with the first 3 options.
Noticeable improvement, but the performance is still dreadful.
    * Did a re-install and archive of OS X (per a friend's suggestion) and downloaded all the system updates anew.
    No improvement.
So after rebuilding my system from the directories up, re-installing iPhoto, and rebuilding the iPhoto library I'm "back to" 30 second to 3+ minute waits for everything when the Photo Info pane is active. For example, it takes 30-90 second waits for tasks such as:
    * changing a tab in the Photo Info pane
    * trying to scroll the Keywords tab of the Photo Info pane
    * assign 1 keyword to 1 photo
It takes 2-3+ minute waits for tasks such as:
    * scrolling the main window (one click in the scroll bar--not dragging) when the Photo Info pane is open
    * assigning 1 keyword to 36 photos
    * closing the Photo Info pane (AFTER however many minutes it took for the final commit i did before trying to exit)
    My observations:
    * When the ball is spinning on the screen, iPhoto doesn't "remember" what I do as other applications do, although the Keywords pane will occasionally scroll backward or forward--apparently randomly--in response to a single click anywhere in iPhoto. (And I'm not one of those people who bangs on the keyboard constantly when the computer is busy: I'm talking about a click that might get in before the ball starts spinning on the screen.)
    * The first "click" after opening the Photo Info Pane (either the Keywords tab or the first keyword box) is always "free"--no problem with excessively long waits. The second click after after a "free" click always has the burdensome wait times. Occasionally, though, in the first 3-5 clicks in the Photo Info pane the first click after what I'm assuming is a commit does not have the painful wait times. After those first 3-5 clicks, though, every click gets this excessive wait.
    * It seems odd to me how consistent the minimum wait is: right around 30 seconds. The click is either "free"--i.e. no perceptible wait time (or a reasonably minimal wait, given the task at hand)--or it's 30+ seconds.
These response times really do make the product unusable for me. Does anyone:
    1) Have any other suggestions?
    2) Know how I can find out whether this problem is being pursued by Apple?
    3) Know of any path out of the product so I can put myself out of my misery?………

  • Bridge CS4 - I still can't move keywords for stock photos

    I'm on a Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.8, 4G RAM.
I buy a lot of stock photos. The stock photo companies have thoughtfully assigned a bunch of keywords to the photos, sometimes in other languages that I don't really speak. Photos.com is notorious for applying keywords that have nothing to do with the photo, as evidenced my my searches for certain keywords. I wish they'd all stop doing this.
When these photos are opened, their keywords appear under "Other Keywords." I can make the keyword permanent under "Other Keywords," but I am unable to drag the keyword(s) into the main keyword list in an effort to GET RID OF this "Other Keywords" list.
I was hoping this was addressed in Bridge CS4, but of course it wasn't...UNLESS...
someone here knows how to do it?

YES Terence!  Thank you. Exporting allowed me to move my photos from iPhoto into the Burn Folder on my desktop.   But that doesn't explain why I'm having to go that route now.   Have I done something (accidentally changed some setting) on my computer that will not allow me to just click and drag anymore?   I really liked the convenience of the click and drag option.
I don't have the time tonight to export and burn a lot of CD/DVDs.  I'll try that tomorrow and make sure my photos are moving properly.  I also need to export photos to my external hard drive to make sure that route is working.
Wouldn't you know that my Apple Care Plan runs out this Wednesday?!  I need to make sure everything is working properly before that expires.
Thank you so much for your help.   I really, really appreciate it.

  • Problem Importing Keywords with jpg photos into Library

I am a new and enthusiastic LR user working to migrate from iMatch, where I have kept my ~80,000 photos organized for the last several years. However, my last roadblock to being able to do that is the import of keyword information (or as iMatch calls them, Categories). Obviously it's critical that these transfer across seemlessly as they represent untold number of hours in sorting and managing the database.
The situation: Via an iMatch script I can successfully write the associated categories, including hierarchy, into an IPTC field of my choosing that is then included with the jpg file itself. I have done this into the "Keywords" field, with various combinations of special characters and/or spaces to denote hierarchy relationships or separate keywords.
Upon LR import: LR recognizes the presence of the keywords and pulls them into the metadata, but refuses to see them as anything except part of one continuous hierarchy.
Example: A picture in iMatch has two Categories associated with it, both of which are organized under a parent-->child hierarchy:
    Trips --> Switzerland2006 and Special --> Family --> Daughter
When written via script into the IPTC Keyword field of the jpg file, it looks like this: Trips.Switzerland2006; Special.Family.Daughter
(note -- I can make the semicolon separating the keywords anything, such as a comma, space, etc. I have tried all.)
When imported into LR, it ends up looking like this under the left panel Keyword Tags area: Trips --> Switzerland2006; Special --> Family --> Daughter
In the righthand panel under "Keyword Tags", I only see "Daughter" as this is at the bottom of the single stack hierarchy that was interpreted.
In other words: I have found no possible way for LR to recognize that there is in fact MORE THAN ONE keyword coming in, rather than always a single hierarchy stack or very long words with spaces, semicolons, whatever included in between.
I have tried every setting under Preferences-->File Handling, but those only give me options about when to tell LR to recognize a hierarchy step, not about what character to see as a separation between keywords themselves.
Final note: If I first open one of my picture files in Adobe Bridge and look at the IPTC field Keyword there, it looks perfect. And if I go into that field and mess around a bit -- add a space, take away a space -- with in the end no change, then resave the file, THEN bring into LR, it works fine! I believe what is happening in this case is that Bridge is correctly interpreting the Keyword data from the file, but then is writing it into an XMP area that I can't see. LR must then read the XMP area in preference over the IPTC are upon import.... But -- if Bridge can read the original IPTC line correctly, why not Lightroom?!
Bottom line question: What format or special character or special trick must be used for multiple keywords in the IPTC Keyword field so that Lightroom will correctly recognize the multiple keywords upon import?
    Thank you!
    JMC

Do those keyword hierarchies show up properly in Vista Photo Gallery? I have the LR Edit/Preferences/File Handling configured to treat "/" (which is what Vista Photo Gallery uses) as a keyword separator and LR recognizes the hierarchical keywords.
As I understand it, Vista reads both XMP and IIM/IPTC Headers, but will write only to XMP. I forced Photo Gallery to convert my keywords to XMP by adding a global keyword and then deleting it later. Then I used drag and drop to recreate the hierarchies. It works for me.

  • Updating/sharing keywords and metadata in Lightroom 4

I will be using an intern to help add keywords & metadata to an extremely large group of photos in Lightroom 4.
The intern will have their own workstation so we'll be passing files back and forth.
I need to add their work to mine, keeping all of the keyword/metadata work tied to the virtual photos which already have some work done to them (some keywords, metatdata and photo enhancements already in place on some photos).
    step-by-step appreciated
What is the best way to do this?
    I'm still learning LR myself.
    suggestions welcomed!
    thank you

Lightroom is not a multi-user application, and so you can, via tedious manipulation of files, achieve the result you want, but I should also note that make one mistake, and you potentially have a real mess on your hands.
The best solution (in my opinion) is to put the catalog file and all photos on a server that you can both access. The drawback to doing this is that only one person can be working with a specific Lightroom catalog at a time. And given my usual advice to use only one catalog, this may not meet your needs.
If that's not a good solution, then the intern can create her own temporary catalog of the portion of the photos to be worked on today, add keywords and other metadata, and then pass the catalog file to you to merge with your main catalog using the command File->Import from another catalog.
As another alternative, if the only task the intern will carry out is adding keywords and other metadata, there are many freeware solutions that your intern can use for this, and then when she is done in a particular folder, you can in Lightroom select all the photos in that folder, and then read the metadata from the photo files. For Windows, two such freeware programs are GeoSetter and ExifToolGUI.

  • Adding keywords and description to filename

I've built myself an online gallery system to let my clients view and purchase their photos online.  To streamline my workflow, the script that imports my photos and resizes them for web display will also parse the file name to pull out a description and tags (keywords).  So I went in and added descriptions and keywords to a few test images and went to save them out to try running through the script, but when trying to save from Camera Raw neither keywords nor description were available to add to the jpg file name.  I figured I could get around this by simply using Bridge to rename the NEF files using the keywords and description, then I could just have CR save the jpgs using the current filename, but even Bridge doesn't seem to be able to access this metadata (and this would add addition time to the process anyway).
I know I can work around this by simply batch renaming the sets of files that I would otherwise add this metadata to, and creating the file names manually before export, but that would add a fair amount of time into the process and eliminates me being able to use keywords in Bridge.  I work two jobs right now and anything I can do to my workflow to shave precious minutes off of it is huge to me.
So I guess my questions are:
    1) Is it possible to get keywords and the description into my filenames (without spending more time than this process was designed to save)?
    2) If not, what's the point of having that metadata?
    3) Is this functionality available in a newer version of PS?
I'm using Photoshop CS3 and the format my final JPG files need to have is: "[4 digit sequence number]_[Description]_[comma delimited keyword list].jpg"
Thanks for reading, and hopefully helping.

Sorry about that, was too early in the morning when i posted that. No, you can't use Batch Rename to add keywords to files, i was thinking about metadata in general. The point of keywords is that you can search images for keywords and you can also use the Filter panel to show only images that contain certain keywords.
If you want Bridge to have this functionality then i suggest that you make a feature request here: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish

  • Applying keywords to multiple photos

seems like an easy request, right? applying a keyword to multiple photos...
I've got the keyword HUD open. I've read the help files, the manual, seems rather straight forward to me. Select the pictures, drag over the word, should be applied to all selected.
Problem is, I can't get that to happen.
For example, I have a project. Under the project is a folder. I want to apply the same keyword to all 5 star pics in that folder. I use the view to display all 5 star pics. Then I select all, white box appears around them all indicating they are selected.
But here's my crunch. Even though I selected them all, really only one picture at a time is affected, as if there is a primary selection pic within the total selected pics. I've changed views, not sure how to actually affect a change to all selected.
It is as if the selection is a display function, but there is only one picture at a time actually selected for a change to be applied.
How in the world does one do something so simple as select all, drag the keyword over to all selected, and see them all tagged? Seems so simple...but I can't make this happen.
    Thanks

I agree: The help and discussions here are very valuable. Thanks for all the tips, very useful.
For what it's worth -- I don't know why -- but one new Library I started just would not accept any Keywords at all: None. I'd click on the list I made in the Control Bar: Nothing would happen.
BUT when going to another Library Keywords worked fine (much to my relief).
This happen just after importing a photo from IPhoto that I had, for the first time, put keywords on it in iPhoto. Any connection, I don't know.
BUT After going back and forth to other Libraries a few times, it started working perfectly.
    !? -- I think Aperture is great!

  • How can I import keywords and albums from iphoto 5?

I have new imac with iPhoto 7.1. I'd like to import the keywords and albums along with the pics from my old imac and iphoto 5. Photos import, but not tags or albums. Any suggestions?

    Roy
The trick is not to import, but to update.
Copy the library from the old mac to the new one, then hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and point iPhoto at this old one and it will update it to a v7 library, including albums and keywords.
If you already have a new library on your new machine, then use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them or to move the pics from the older to the newer.
