Keywords attached to Metadata as well?

Aloha everyone,
I am fed up with iPhoto- it's all good if I was a high school student taking 30 pictures of friends a month, but I do events and things and I usually take over 3,000 in hours.. most end up being deleted but still I have a huge library.
I would like to switch to Aperature, but one thing I need answered is wether changes and catagorizing that is done in Aperture will be added to each file's metadata and not just stored on a single "reference" file, which can be corrupted and worse, makes it very hard to impossible to move to other programs in the future.
Does anyone know if keywords, date changes, and such, is added to the Metadata of the actual pictures?

The data is not added to the image unless you export it.

• 2 identical sets of photos in LR4, one set shows as missing but has all keywords attached; photos not missing are missing keywords

I had to move photos and LR4 catalog from one external storage to another. I now have two identical sets of photos in the catalog but one full set is shown as missing. Easy enough to delete these but they have all my hours and hours of work on keywords attached to them. The other set of photos, the one that actually exists on the drive, has no keywords attached. I gotta have those keywords! Is there a way that won't take the rest of my life to get photos and keywords connected again?

Thanks for helping!
Your suggestion didn't work, but it did get me tinkering around and led me to a solution that's not necessarily quick but definitely easier than re-entering all the keywords.
I was smart enough to not have deleted the photos from the thumb drive they were first saved on, so I plugged it back in. Then I went to the folders list in LR and deleted the existing, missing-keyword photos, folder by folder. Then I just dragged the images from the original drive to the the new one. Well, I'm still doing it to 1500 photos but it's working and it saves me lots of work. So thank you for helping me think of the problem and its solution in a different way. I appreciate your time.

• Searching For Keywords embedded in metadata tags of PDF files

We have a large number of Adobe Acrobat PDF files that were converted from paper documents a number of years ago that we would like to store in OCS Content Services. They were bitmap imaged, so they are not OCR-readable.
We had already embedded keywords in the metadata tag fields associated with the PDF file, but the Ultrasearch Engine in OCS does not appear to "see" them. Is there anyway to tune Ultrasearch so that it can search these fields?
Thanks!
Mark

it calls for me to print out the line that the keyword is on. Is there an easy way to change what i already have to implement that or should i start from scratch again?Well, I haven't taken the time to read all your code to see exactly what you are doing, but it does look a little to complicated to me. I think I would simply read one line at a time from the file and search that line for keywords. This [url http://javaalmanac.com/egs/java.io/ReadLinesFromFile.html]link shows the general structure.

• LR2 Question syncing keywords and/or Metadata.

I am shooting RAW and import the files into my catalog as DNG.
After adding keywords and changing metadata to all the DNG files I would like to apply those changes back to my original RAW files.
Can I do that easily? Maybe adding XMP files to the same directories as the original RAW files?
Once I have the RAW files tagged with the same keywords and metadata I plan to archive them and delete from my disk.
Thank you,

For your first question - You can select the folder containing the files then use the Save Metadata command from Folder panel context menu (see attached screen shot). Alternatively, you can select the actual files then use Save Metadata to file command (Ctrl/Cmd+S). This latter method is much slower.
For you second question - not using your current workflow. That said, if you changed your workflow slightly it's possible. To do it you ned to import your raw files without converting to DNG. Next, you apply keywords, metadata, etc. then use method described above for saving back to file (this creates the XMP sidecars). Now select all of the images in Grid view and convert the raw files to DNG (Convert to DNG from Library menu).
The final step would be to archive the raws plus XMP sidecars, this will need to be done outside of Lightroom.

• How can i NOT include top level keyword in the metadata of an image?

Hello,
I want to know how can i NOT include top level keyword in the metadata of an image. I know there is an option for not applying a keyword to an exported image, but is there an option for not applying the top level keyword to the actual image?
I have organized my geographical (by location) keywords like this:
Places
USA
New York
Miami
Spain.
If i add geographical keywords to all my images, all my images will have the keyword "Places", i dont think that it have any sence to have all your images with one keyword. How can i fix this? Any sugestion? i will appreciate it a lot any help or information that you could give me.
Excuse my english, i know it is not good. I hope that you could understand me.
Thanks,
Marcelo :)

Explicitly excluding a keyword only applies when "exporting". Unfortunately, there's currently no way to stop the keyword being written to the file when "Save Metadata to File" command is used. The natural reaction of users to this difference is to suggest that it is stupid. Nevertheless, there are good reasons why the difference exists:
1. "Export" creates a new file whereas "Save Metadata to File" writes the metadata back into the existing file.
2. There are very good reasons why certain keywords should not be written to file, and the example given in the OP is one. Saving metadata to file is more often used as means of backing up important image related metadata, independently of the catalog or allowing the metadata to be visible in other aplications. It would be rare that such a file would be shared with a third party, so the reason for not including certain keywords is less obvious. Actually, not including it can result in no end of confusion and grief. For example, if the top level (or any keyword) was excluded during the save metadata process then the other keywords would be orphaned when image is imported back into the catalog (e.g. buiding a new catalog).
The development team are aware of the need, in some circumstances, to exclude certain keywords when save metadata command is used. How and when the issue is resolved, without adding even more confusion/complexity, is some way off.

• Keyword not supported: 'metadata'.

Hi,
I created my ADO.NET model based on an SQL Server DB (Created using Entity Framework).
The connection string is (Created automatically with the ADO.NET model)
<add name="ConnectivityAccessDBEntities" connectionString="metadata=res://*/ConnectivityAccessDBModel.csdl|res://*/ConnectivityAccessDBModel.ssdl|res://*/ConnectivityAccessDBModel.msl;provider=System.Data.SqlClient;provider connection string="data source=hvmwe;initial catalog=ConnectivityAccessDB;user id=*****;password=****;MultipleActiveResultSets=True;App=EntityFramework"" providerName="System.Data.EntityClient" />
But unfortunately, when running my application, I get the following error message:
Keyword not supported: 'metadata'.
I don't understand what is wrong with this connection string.
I tried to replace the """ with "'" but that doesn't help
Please I need help
Regards,
Nadeem Bader

Hello Nadeem,
With your provided connection string, I created a test demo, however, it could work fine with this connection string. So I think the string should be ok, for helping you looking into this case, please provide information as:
Which version of Entity Framework are you using?
Which API are you using, the DbContext or ObjectContext?
Do you have even modified the generated code? If have, I suggest that you do not do that, just to do a simple test as below to check if this works:
using (db_testEntities db=new db_testEntities())
var result = db.Orders.ToList();
And please share some related code with us which would help narrow down this issue.
I am also wondering if it is an environment issue, please have a try to create a solution and create a new project with Entity Framework. Or using a new machine to create it to see if works.
Regards.

• Appending Keywords and other metadata to the masterfile

I can't find an answer to the question:
How do I append Keywords and other metadata I added in Aperture to the masterfile without exporting?
I need that to import all that metadata of the masterfiles in a Portfolio database.

I guess you will need a new copy of the RAW to import into Portfoilio. That's really the only way to get Aperture to make the XMP file that contains the keywords. There is a program called Annoture which can convert Aperture metadata into metadata for the program iView Media Pro. No one has made a program to get metadata directly into Portfolio. Aperture wpn't "embed" the keywords in a RAW file because it will not alter the original. Maybe someday Aperture will create DNG files.

• How do I batch the file name (without extention) into the keyword in the metadata

I am trying to use a keyword into sets of images, each of the images on the set contains in the file name what I want for keyword and an extension.
Example,
File names:
WD111_main
WD111_01
WD111_02
I want all of them to have on the metadata just WD111.
help?!?!

You will need to do this with a text field and a Javascript that executes on open.

• Is there a way to automatically save my keywords to the metadata?

I'm coming from Lightroom, and it does it all automatically.

What do you mean with "save keywords to metadata"?
In Aperture - most of the time - saving any edits is not necessary. Conceptually Aperture is more like a database or an asset management system than like a document editor. Any changes to metadata tags like keywords are stored immediately. While working with Aperture you are changing images (items in Aperture), not image files. You change a keyword or any other part of the metadata and that change applies to the version of the image you are editing.
When you export an image all your edits are computed to create an image file and you can choose to have the IPICT-Metadata added to the exported image file.
For changes to the IPICT tags (and keywords are part of the IPICT content) you can decide to write them directly to the master image file, either with import presets, when batch changing mutiple images, or with the menu entry
Metadata -> Write IPICT Metadata to Master
But usually you are not supposed to access the master files using the Finder, it is safer to export them from Aperture, if you need them outside Aperture, and then you can add the IPICT tags on export by setting the flag.

• Will adding keywords or other metadata changes to jpeg cause file to be compressed?

Hi, I've been searching on this for hours and not finding a definitive answer.
Will adding/modifying keywords or metadata (ok if this is two seperate questions)
cause a jpeg file to be compressed again while the changes are saved to disk?
thanks for any assistance,
William

Thanks for the reply. I am somewhat clearer on exporting and I understand the non-destructive changes concept for LR.
Maybe a better question would be " Does Lightroom recompress a jpeg when writing to the XMP space in the file?" please correct me if "XMP space" is not he correct term for where keywords are stored.

• Importing keywords - missing in Metadata

I want to import a plug-in list of Keywords into Ligtroom 4. However - as described in Lightroom Help - in Library under Metadata, I do not see the option for "Importing Keywords." I do see Keywording and Keywrod List, but there does not appear to be anywhere here to add an entire list with heirarchy levels. What am I missing?

• Keywords the only metadata fully supported ??

As far as I can tell from reading the manual, the only type of metadata that is fully supported, in the sense of having handy tools to organise, add and edit the information, is keywords.
In other words there is no way to add, say "Amsterdam" to the IPTC Locatin field of a group of images, or to save the combination "Europe + Holland + Amsterdam" as a "frequently used combination" to add to single or multiple files.
Is that correct? Or have I misunderstood? Does Aperture assume that users will only be adding info via "Keywords"?

Metadata>Batch Change... and lift-n-stampt are the two main ways of applying metadata to multiple files.
Metadata presets were just introduced in 1.5 and fit your "frequently used combination". Manually edit the metadata for an image, then click on the 'cog' button (top right of the info panel) and choose "Save as Preset...". That metadata can now be added to (or replace entirely) another image in the future.
But no, there's no equivalent to the Keywords HUD.

• How can I expand the path of keywords in the metadata inspector?

In the metadata view I see the keywords at the leaf level, but I want to see the full path in order to delete one of multiple keywords of the same name (at leaf level).
To better explain: Let's say there are two leafs "other"; if both are applied to a single version then they appear as one "other" in the inspector. If I delete the only "other" in the inspector then it deletes both types, not just the one. Obviously something is keeping track of the difference, because when I delete the keyword of type1's "other", it complains that a version has it. Yet, when I delete it, the type 2's "other" remains in the inspector's keyword list.
In a nutshell: I simply want to delete a keyword for a given path, whether it be from the inspector or some other method. Besides, it would be nice to see which "other" it is in the inspector. Surely there is a preference I missed.

You can't (afaik).
Aperture's implementation of Keywording in general, and hierarchical Keywords in particular, would benefit from a rather complete rewrite.
I strongly suggest renaming your keywords so that you have NO identical Keywords at different levels of your Keyword hierarchy. (Perhaps "OtherPerson", "OtherFlower".)
If you do this before deleting any Keywords, the "same name different Keyword" problem will disappear, both for applying Keywords and for deleting Keywords. Renaming Keywords is live -- if you rename one in the Keywords HUD, it will be renamed for every Image to which it is assigned.
Note that the Keyword Rule in the Filter HUD will show you a more complete path when needed. You should be able to filter for Keywords by path if two Keywords of the same name are present in the container being filtered.
(This is from memory -- I can't check right now.)

• How can i print an email without the attached pictures printing as well?

I am trying to print an email that has pictures attached. I do not need the pictures to be printed.
The pictures are showing in the body of the email.
When I try to print it scales down the text to make two of the pictures fit on the first page.
How do I change this so I can print the text separately?

If the sender embedded the image instead of attaching it then you could try selecting only the text before printing That should print without the images. Thunderbird will only prints what is selected unless there is nothing selected. Then it prints all. You can test this with Print Preview.
If the image is truly an attachment, then go to the menu bar and select View and uncheck Display Attachments Inline.
No menu bar? Press the alt key.

• Are keywords and other metadata in web galleries Google-searchable

I am currently creating my first website and wish to use one of the website templates in LR 2.6.
My question is, will Google-etc search engines 'see' my keywords and image titles during their searches?
I hope someone can help.
Thank you

Not by google, yet, but by other methods.
.Jeffreys Exif viewer will read it and there are other web based image search engines that do. Only time before google does likewise I would guess.
This is a usful link to how to add google analytics to LR web sites
