Keywords don't import

OK - I have updated to iPhoto '08 - but I don't have any keywords showing up from my old library on the photos, and the keyword list from the old iPhoto is not there. When I import, the data file cannot be copied, obviously because they are not photo files. How do I get my huge 5 year photo library that is already on iPhoto 08 to have the keywords with them?

OK - I have done what you told me - exported the new to the desktop folders. Chose the old library when I started iPhoto. Said, after examining the library for a few moments that it was going to have to be updated. No other iPhoto would be able to read this after, and update may take several minutes depending on size of the library...... OK so I clicked update. Few moments later it said there was approximately 3 hours left, then 2 then 1 then it has gotten hung up and froze twice since then. Once at 54 minutes left and once at 55 minutes left if that has any bearing on the problem at all. This is what I ran into the first time around, so I tried importing them and all worked but the keywords. Any thoughts on this problem?
They are on my hard drive, not on an external drive, FYI. ANd I probably should have said 'hangs' and not crashes. It just sits there endlessly with 54/55 minutes left with the beach ball spinning around. When I open the force quit - it says that iPhoto is not responding.

Hi! Why is the version file smaller than the original file, although I didn't make changes in the file? And why is the keywords don't exporting with original files?

Wild guess: you're using the the wrong export settings. You'll need to tell us more before we can help you - like the export settings you're usng, the size and format of the originals etc.

  • Itunes 5014 don't import song from CD

I've just installed new itunes sw, and it don't import CD.
It imports only 9 seconds for track and then skip to the next...Why? Solutions?

Perhaps it depends on the CD, because no one of my colleague may read it on their PC. I don't have another one to prove it.
The CD has some extra-media contents...perhaps it is the problem.

  • Photos don't import

i tunes syncs my music correctly, imports cds, etc but MY PICTURES will not import, even though boxes are checked under PHOTOS.
    using latest itunes 8.1

You don't import photos into iTunes. iTunes is simply used to choose the folder or album on your computer that contains photos that you want to sync to your iPod.
Here's a simple "How To" on downloading and managing photos from a folder on your hard disk to an iPod:
1 Create a folder on your hard drive to hold the photos you want on your iPod. Call it iPod Photos for example
2 Drag the photos you want from your usual picture folder into the folder you just created
2 Open iTunes, select your iPod in the iTunes Source list.
3 Click the Photos tab and select “Synch photos from.”
4 Choose “Choose Folder” from the pop-up menu and select the iPod photos folder you created.
5 When you want to change what photos are on the iPod just add or remove the photos from the folder you have made and syncronise the the iPod

  • My clips don't import in order, how do I make them stay in order?

When I drag a large number of pictures into iMovie (to make a stop-motion video), the order gets all mixed up! How do I stop this from happening?

I have noticed that sometimes when I drag a number of photos into the timeline, the first one in the group gets put in a different spot, usually at the end. I don't know why it happens, and it doesn't seem to have a pattern of occurrence. I just have to check carefully to see where the first photo went. I think iMovie gets easily overloaded and so I don't import over about 60 photos at one time.

  • Invalid Keywords Added on Import

    Hi there
Lightroom keeps mysteriously adding keywords everytime I import a JPEG file from the hard drive. To be more specific, I import the Raw files, no problem. Export as a Tiff for photoshop, save the Tiff and create a JPEG web version in PS. Then, when I import the web version, Lightroom adds the same incorrect keywords.
Here is what I've tried to rectify the problem:
    1. I've ensured that the keywords box in the import dialog is completely empty and that no metadata template is selected.
    2. I've deleted all metadata templates.
    3. I've cleared all recent metadata and turned off keyword suggestions.
    4. To be sure, I've open the same file in photoshop before the lightroom import and checked that those keywords were not added,
I am using version 2.5, 16bit, PC version
I've searched through the forums, found similar issues but can't seem to find a solution for my problem.
    My Import Menu
    My Metadata Presets
Lightroom Keywords with all the Paris keywords mysteriously added.
The keywords of the exact same file in Photoshop

Have you tried inspecting the JPEG with Exiftool, or the like, before you import into LR to ensure there are no keywords in the metadata.
Sorry - just reread and you've already said you've inspected before import.

  • Older PSD and Tif files don't import

I know I have seen this on the forum, but I could not find it. I am importing all of my archives into Aperture. Some older PSD and Tiff files (pre 2000) just don't import. No warning. Just missing files. This is a bit scary as I can't go through all of the folders 1 by 1 to see what is missing. Is this a known bug....any work arounds. Thanks
    mac book, Dual 2gig G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Maybe. But, frankly, Aperture is not a PSD archiving and workflow appliation. It is a photographic workflow application. Adobe, by nature of having written Photoshop, probably has better support for old Photoshop formats than does Apple.
If you really need to import 40,000 PSD files into something, I would suggest Aperture is not the best tool for you. You want an asset manager or something that specializes in archiving/search. Aperture's raison d'etre is RAW photos, you know, that come from a camera.

  • Network sharing - keywords don;t work

    Hi,
Has anyone found a way to get keywords working on the client machine for network-shared albums?
    Cheers,
    b.

    Hi buckster,
    Nope, keywords don't work either.
Basically, the sharing is just to view. If you want to work with anything from the sharing computer, you have to drag the images to your library in the source column.

  • Keywords won't import when importing Projects

Hopefully someone can help me with this mystery. I use Aperture on two machines. My iMac is my master, and my MacBook is my field computer. I recently added keywords to about 10,000 photos while sitting in a hotel room for a few days. When I got home, I exported all the affected projects from my MacBook and then subsequently imported them into my iMac. However, none of the keywords showed up! In an effort to troubleshoot, I again exported a single project from my MacBook, then imported that project into the same computer. But, again, the keywords didn't show up in the imported photos. In further troubleshooting, I tried exporting/importing a single photo (versus a project), and the keywords showed up just fine. So it appears this issue is only with importing/exporting projects, not individual photos...
In further troubleshooting, I viewed the file called 'Version-1.apversion' in the Aperture Library both prior to and after export as well as after import. As expected, the keyword info appeared in the pre- and post- export versions of the file, but it didn't appear in the post-import version:
    <key>keywords</key>
    <array>
    <string>Alyssa Family People</string>
    <string>Alyssa's Friends Friends People</string>
    </array>
I can post the entire contents of the file if that helps you diagnose my problem, but the files are essentially the same (other than the date and ID info). Anyone have the key to this riddle?? I'd really rather not export/import all the photos individually!

Upon further troubleshooting, this problem only appears to affect my keywords. All other IPTC/EXIF data imports properly (for instance: headline, byline, event name, city, country, etc.).
I analyzed the package files associated with the images immediately prior to and after project export, and for the most part they are identical, which seems to indicate the project export functionality is working properly. However, it for some reason drops off the associated keywords during project import (file|import|project), so it appears my problem is at this step?? Thanks!!

  • LR 4.2: "Don't import suspected duplicates" fails repeatedly

After import from CF card, then next import with "don't import suspected duplicates'' checked, failed many times. You must close and reopen the import window, repeating the operation (one or two times) to make it work properly.

Yep.  And I agree it needs to be better.  You might want to add a feature request at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum
At the risk of necroing a thread, I want to disagree that "it needs to be better" if that translates to "ignores files with small differences in the filename but otherwise the same." From the standpoint of file management, we never, ever want software thinking about this too much. I have encountered multiple situations where i was able to recover from a corrupt file precisely because the software was extremely strict on what it considered to be a duplicate. Put differently, it does not hurt us to have two copies of an important photo, while it can be devastating to have no copies—or one corrupted copy—of an important photo. When importing hundreds or thousands of shots, we absolutely want Lightroom insisting that filename, sixe, and capture date/time be identicial to be considered a duplicate. Otherwise, we want these sorts of decisions left to us. After all, there is a reason that file is different, and it could well be that an atuomated process elsewhere failed and two copies of photo allows us to choose what was the correct image to retain.
Again, sorry for the necro, but I felt this needed to be said.

My iTunes was working fine, all my CDs would import fully and quickly. Now they are importing slowly and when the CDs get to the last track they don't import and the CD drive just keeps spinning without doing anything! How can I fix this?
I don't want to have to restart or reinstall my iTunes again as I'll have to redo all my playlists etc

Likely that CD then. Check visually for damage, blemishes, etc., not that there's anything you can really do about those other than return the CD.
The drive sits there and spins because it is trying to re-read the CD.  iTunes has error correction which is contributing to all this re-reading, I believe, and you may be able to disable that in preferences if you aren't picky about the result.
You can also try other rippers such as Max or XLD.  I know those have configurable error correction.  I like XLD but it is slightly tricky to use until you find that for some reason the author has put all settings under preferences, not just the set once and forget ones.

  • LIghtroom and Bridge Keywords don't match

I use PhotoMechanic (with the stationary pad setup) to ingest NEF images, then convert them DNG with DNG Converter. I add keywords using PhotoMechanic, Bridge and Expression media and Edit using PS to create web versions.
I'm trying to use LR 1.3 and starting to import them all.
When I look at the keywords in LR 1.3 the DNG are all the same, however the JPG in LR 1.3 are different from the other three (PhotoMechanic, Bridge, Expression Media). I've read metadata from the files in LR 1.3 and there is no change to the jpg.
It looks like LR 1.3 does not extract metadata from JPG the same way as Bridge does.
    Any ideas why?

There are a lot of profiles for Raw-images but much less for JPG images.
Lr will display only those lens profiles that apply for the file format in question. So when you have a JPG image the profiles for Raw images will not be displayed in Lr, and vice versa.
If you don't have the correct lens profile in you list you have to download it.
For this you need the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader.
And for this program you need Adobe Air.
Download both programs from Adobe's website - they are free of charge.
Then install Adobe Air first, and when that is installed, install the Lens Profile Downloader.
Once it is installed just open it, it is self-explanatory and will display all available lens profiles once you have selected your camera and lens makes.

  • All Keywords don't show up in Photoshop List?

In Bridge I import a text file that has all my keywords to a Master Folder where all the other subfolders have pictures files. In PS-CS6.0 when I want to add key words in file info I type the first letter and the keywords with that letter show up in a list and then I choose the correct word.  However some letters don't produce a list or only produce a partial list. If the keyword doesn't show up I have to go to my text file and copy the keyword and paste it into the file info.
    why?

Before i start, let me just say that I never post replies in forums...but this one just vexes me beyond belief.
I have been a mac user since my first year of Graphic design, way back in 1995.  I have a first gen ipad, I also have an older imac (2006) with Tiger installed for an os which i owned before the iPad.  Now, when I first got the ipad, and plugged it into my mac, i had no problems with it.  It showed up, i could transfer, sync, back up, whatever i had to do.  Since then, and for a while now, i cannot.... i dunno if it was because of software updates, or whatever, but now, iTunes doesn't read my ipad....***?  It used to?  Why all of a sudden does it not work anymore?....Ohhh wait, now i know....I have to upgrade to iTunes to at least 10.1.whatever.......and to do that, i have to upgrade my os to at least snow leopard.  But, i cannot upgrade to snow leopard, because for all intents and purposes,  it doesn't exist anymore.
So now, when anyone posts problems with their iOS devices, your response should be "plug it into a PC"....because it works.

  • Lighttable View mode, Keyword Sets for Import

    1. I'd be nice if we could have some sort of "Lighttable View" mode for the Library module. It would be similar to the Survey Mode, but you can move the photos around on the screen and sort or group them to your liking. E.g., after photographing a demo you could put the shots of the masses in one corner, photos of the police in another etc., the pictures still being double-clickable of course. This way choosing your keepers would become easier I think. It would be nice if Lightroom saved the arrangement, too.
    2. I'd like to see Keyword sets for the Import dialog. E.g. every weekend I need the set "soccer, men's, 2009/2010, AAA league". To have presets like this would make it even easier to work with Lightroom

    Right
    1)
As a professional photographer I need a lighttable as there is one in "Apple´s Aperture".
We need a possibility to arrange photos easily and quiclkly and set a aperture to some of thenm right at the shooting set, to demonstrate the
client how the different photos/locations could be arranged and how they could match together later in the magazine etc.
This is not a toy feature. Apple understood, that it is a feature we need to have to brainstorm
right at the set or at home. And this feature sometimes creates right at the set new ideas or prevent
    failures.
So please Adobe, let there be a "real lighttable" in the next Lightroom version.
Humans just don´t think in grid mode.

  • Why do keyword synonyms get imported as separate keywords?

Hello, and sorry if this question has been asked before (it's my first time in the forums, and I find them rather user-unfriendly).
I'm currently trying to understand keywords & keyword hierarchies.
I have successfully created several keywords that include sub-keywords and synonyms, for example, the top keyword "Location" includes the sub-keyword "Europe", and for that I have entered the synonym "Europa" (German translation for "Europe").
Now, I apply the keyword "Europe" to an image, export the image, and add the exported image to my catalog. And now Lightroom automatically adds "Europa" as a separate keyword to my keyword list. This defeats the whole purpose of keyword hierarchies, since my keyword list will soon be cluttered again, and all the help sites I've browsed so far speak of uncluttered keyword lists.
So, my suspicion is that I'm doing something wrong. But I am lost... can anybody help?
I have checked the option "Write Keywords as Lightroom Hierarchy" when exporting - I thought this would mean that my exported image will contain the same keyword hierarchy and thus there shouldn't be any new keywords added to my list when adding that exported file to my catalog. But it doesn't seem to work...
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot!

    Cornelia-I wrote:
    Come on, Brett,
That is no solution to Simone's problems!
She wants the full LR capability of keyword hierarchies plus synonyms on any level. This should work if you export out of LR and back in. Especially if you share such a photo with a different person.
Does your answer mean that LR is incapable of doing that?  That the feature of synonyms just does not work, because LR cannot mark an exported keyword as synonym of another?
Leaving aside the awkward question of WHY one would immediately re-import an exported image - synonyms are intended to work within a given Catalog despite not being present as actual keywords on an image.
So it is not necessary to physically include synonyms either outgoing or incoming, in order for these to operate correctly while you are in the Catalog concerned. Just like Collections, synonyms and keyword nesting are properties of a Catalog; not of an image.
Any image which has a particular real keyword, "hooks into" any associated synonym behaviour automatically - and any hierarchy behaviour also.
Including these "virtual" keywords as REAL keywords on export, means that they ACt as real keywords. For example, these are no longer synonyms, they are now full keywords in their own right - so they will now show in the keywords list.
If you don't require synonyms or implied-hierarchy to be seen OUTSIDE Lightroom then - simply - don't include this in your output.
If you want to pass images on to someone else in a way that maintains all the same full Catalog functions that you have locally; you can select them and Export as Catalog. Or you can provide them with a template Catalog which already contains this structure. When they import your new image with its actual keywords, all the related virtual synonyms and hierarchy will already be there, for them to hook into.
